  • Goff’s 4 TD’s, Hutchinson’s 3 sacks lead Lions over Washington – Monday Morning Sports Update

NFL – National Football League – Week 2
    Last Night
Detroit Lions 36, Washington Commanders 27
Jacksonville Jaguars 24, Indianapolis Colts 0
Green Bay Packers 27, Chicago Bears 10

Lions 36, Commanders 27 – Goff throws 4 TD passes, Lions beat Commanders 36-27
Jared Goff threw two of his four touchdown passes to Amon-Ra St. Brown to lift the Detroit Lions to a 36-27 win over Washington. Aidan Hutchinson had three sacks in the first half to help the Lions lead 22-0 at halftime and Will Harris had an interception in the second half to stunt the Commanders as they rallied. Washington made adjustments to give Carson Wentz more time in the second half. Wentz took advantage and pulled his team within seven points with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Curtis Samuel, a 20-yard pass to Logan Thomas.

Jaguars 24, Colts 0 – Jags’ home win streak vs Colts reaches 8 with 24-0 shutout
Trevor Lawrence threw two touchdown passes to Christian Kirk, and Jacksonville dominated short-handed Indianapolis 24-0 on Sunday for its eighth consecutive home victory in the series. The Jaguars sacked Matt Ryan five times, intercepted three of his passes, held reigning NFL rushing champion Jonathan Taylor to 54 yards and notched their eighth shutout in franchise history. The past three have come against Indianapolis, which hasn’t won in Jacksonville since 2014. This one was never in doubt.

Packers 27, Bears 10 – Rodgers, Packers lean on Jones, take care of Bears 27-10
Aaron Jones rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown and caught a scoring pass from Aaron Rodgers, who continued his domination of the Chicago Bears by leading the Green Bay Packers to a 27-10 victory. Green Bay bounced back from a season-opening 23-7 loss at Minnesota and beat the Bears for a seventh straight time, matching its second-longest win streak in the 205-game history of the NFL’s oldest rivalry. The Packers built a 24-7 halftime lead by dominating the second period, then made a goal-line stand in the fourth quarter to thwart a Bears comeback attempt. Rodgers went 19 of 25 for 234 yards and two touchdowns.

Jiménez finished with three hits and three RBIs, and Gavin Sheets had two hits and two RBIs. The White Sox are trying to catch the AL Central-leading Guardians, but they are running out of time. Yan Gomes homered and drove in a season-high three runs for the Cubs, who trailed 4-0 after two innings.

NCAAFB – Washington moves in; Penn State, Oregon move up
Washington made its season debut in The Associated Press college football at No. 18 and Penn State and Oregon moved into the top 15 after all three had decisive nonconference victories. A weekend filled with blowouts by highly ranked teams kept the top 10 almost unchanged. No. 1 Georgia picked up six more first-place votes in the AP Top 25. The Bulldogs are up to 59 first-place votes and 1,569 points. No. 2 Alabama received three first-place votes and No. 3 Ohio State got one. Penn State jumped eight spots to No. 14 after routing Auburn and Oregon moved up 10 to No. 15 after beating BYU. Washington beat previously ranked Michigan State to earn a ranking for the first time since the 2021 preseason poll.

NCAAFB – Arizona State fires Edwards following loss to Eastern Michigan
Arizona State fired football coach Herm Edwards in his fifth season following an ugly home loss to Eastern Michigan and a lingering NCAA investigation into illegal recruiting practices. Arizona State athletic director Ray Anderson announced the decision on Sunday, a day after the Sun Devils lost 30-21 to Eastern Michigan as heavy favorites. Edwards went 46-26 at Arizona State, including 1-2 this season.

NCAAFB – Big Ten – Nebraska fires defensive coach 1 week after ousting Frost
A week after Nebraska fired head coach Scott Frost, the team’s defensive coordinator is out. Interim head coach Mickey Joseph said Sunday that defensive coordinator Erik Chinander was fired a day after Nebraska gave up 580 yards and 49 points in a lopsided loss to No. 6 Oklahoma. Chinander had led Nebraska’s defense since Frost took over the team in 2018, but his unit floundered this year as the Cornhuskers fell to 1-3. A week before the 49-14 loss to Oklahoma, Nebraska gave up 642 yards in a 45-42 upset by Georgia Southern that preceded Frost’s firing. Special teams coordinator Bill Busch was promoted to defensive coordinator.

NASCAR – NASCAR faces more questions about new car after Bristol bash
At least a dozen of the playoff drivers had some sort of problem with NASCAR’s new Next Gen car Saturday night at Bristol. The spec car that has leveled the playing field was exposed for myriad durability issues that have followed it in its entire debut season. The Ford camp suffered a rash of blown tires, Toyota was plagued by power steering failures, drivers racing for the win were knocked from contention for any number of mechanical gremlins and passing was a most difficult task. Now NASCAR is facing an entire new set of questions about its new car.

White Sox 8, Guardians 2 – White Sox pound 5 homers, rock Central-leading Guardians 8-2
Elvis Andrus hit one of Chicago’s five home runs off rookie Hunter Gaddis and the White Sox cut into Cleveland’s lead in the AL Central with an 8-2 win. Andrus connected in the fifth inning off Gaddis, who became the first Cleveland pitcher to allow five homers in a game since Luis Tiant in 1969. On Wednesday, Andrus raised some eyebrows by saying he expected the first-place Guardians “to crumble the closer we get.” Chicago trimmed Cleveland’s lead to three. Gavin Sheets started Chicago’s homer barrage with a two-run shot in the second. The Guardians had their winning streak stopped at six.

NCAAFB – Sputtering offense could put Notre Dame’s goals in peril
Notre Dame’s 0-2 start and subsequent fall out of the AP Top 25 has created anger within the program. The Fighting Irish are hoping their new quarterback can help them dig out of this early-season hole. Drew Pyne is expected to replace the injured Tyler Buchner on Saturday against California. But what would help Notre Dame most is if Pyne can provide a jump-start to a sputtering offense that has put the team’s biggest goals in peril.

NCAAFB – J.J. McCarthy will get the start again for Michigan
No. 4 Michigan hosts Connecticut on Saturday, when the J.J. McCarthy era will officially begin. Coach Jim Harbaugh named the sophomore the starter, making Big Ten championship-winning quarterback Cade McNamara a backup. The situation reminds Harbaugh of what he went through with the San Francisco 49ers. A year after Alex Smith led San Francisco to the NFC championship game, he was replaced by Colin Kaepernick. The Huskies will start freshman quarterback Zion Turner at Michigan Stadium.

Tennis – Federer, Serena retire; tennis moves on to Alcaraz, Swiatek
The timing of it all hardly could be more symbolic: All within a span of two weeks, Serena Williams plays what is believed to be her last match at age 40, Roger Federer announces he’ll be retiring at 41, Iga Swiatek wins her third Grand Slam title at 21, and Carlos Alcaraz gets his first at 19. After so much handwringing in recent years about what would become of tennis once transcendent superstars such as Williams and Federer leave the game, the sport does seem to be in good hands as it prepares to move on. Federer said Thursday he will exit after the Laver Cup next week. Williams lost in the third round of the U.S. Open on Sept. 2.

WNBA – Griner, Whelan families to meet Biden amid US-Russia talks
President Joe Biden plans to meet at the White House on Friday with the families of WNBA star Brittney Griner and Michigan corporate security executive Paul Whelan, both of whom remain jailed in Russia. The meetings are to be the first in-person encounter between Biden and the families and come amid sustained but so far unsuccessful efforts by the administration to secure the two Americans’ release. The administration said in July that it had made a “substantial proposal” to get them home, but Russia has not yet settled on a deal with the U.S.

NHL – NHL, players remain committed to hosting Feb. 2024 World Cup
The NHL and players remain committed to hosting a World Cup of Hockey in February 2024 even as they work through some unexpected logistical challenges. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, the Players’ Association’s Mathieu Schneider and staffs are working daily to attempt to overcome hurdles related to staging part of the tournament in Europe. The plan is to have eight teams involved in the first international tournament featuring the top players in the world since the World Cup in 2016. The league has not participated in the past two Olympics. A decision has not yet been made about what to do about Russia amid the country’s war in Ukraine.

Judge asked to approve fund for U-Michigan doc’s victims
Attorneys are asking a judge to approve creation of a settlement fund for sexual-assault victims of a University of Michigan sports doctor, a key step in a $490 million deal with more than 1,000 people. The settlement between the school and victims of the late Dr. Robert Anderson was announced in January, but there’s been no public activity. A request was filed this week under seal in Detroit federal court. It seeks the establishment of a “survivors settlement fund” and the appointment of someone to oversee the fund. Attorney Richard Schulte says he can’t comment on the filing. But he says “more concrete news” will come soon. Anderson died in 2008 after working at the university for nearly 40 years.

Olympics – IOC committee visits sites for 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles
The International Olympic Committee’s coordination commission made its first in-person visit to Los Angeles to inspect proposed venues for the 2028 Games. The group met with local organizing officials over three days. LA28 organizing committee Chairman Casey Wasserman says the city is “well-positioned for an exceptional event.” The Los Angeles Games will host 10,000 athletes, while another 5,000 will compete in the Paralympics.

Astros 2, Tigers 1 – Javier leads Astros over Tigers 2-1 for 7-game season sweep
Cristian Javier allowed two hits in six shutout innings, and the Houston Astros beat Detroit 2-1 for a seven-game season sweep of the Tigers. Javier struck out eight and walked none, winning for the third time in four decisions. Ryan Pressly pitched a one-hit ninth for his 28th save in 32 chances, finishing a four-hitter. The AL-best Astros are losing in on their sixth straight postseason appearance. Last-place Detroit is on the verge of its first 90-loss season since 2019.

Rockies 3, White Sox 0 – Freeland outduels Cease, Rockies blank White Sox 3-0
Kyle Freeland outdueled Dylan Cease and put a dent in a push by the Chicago White Sox for a playoff spot, pitching 6 2/3 shutout innings as the Colorado Rockies earned a 3-0 victory. The White Sox fell four games behind AL Central-leading Cleveland with 19 games remaining. Chicago travels to Cleveland for a makeup game Thursday, and the teams return to Chicago for a three-game series starting Sept. 20. Freeland frustrated a Chicago lineup that was 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position. He worked around seven hits and three walks, striking out five. Freeland has posted a 2.17 ERA over his last four starts. Chicago fell to 20-9 in games started by Cease.

Cubs 6, Mets 3 – Peterson tagged early, Mets fall to Cubs 6-3 and get swept
David Peterson got only one out and the slumping New York Mets fell behind early in a 6-3 loss that completed a three-game sweep by the Chicago Cubs. The NL East leaders lost their fifth consecutive home game and dropped to 5-7 in a 16-game stretch against Washington, Pittsburgh, Miami and Chicago — all more than 20 games under .500 this season. New York remained a half-game ahead of the Braves in the division race after they lost in San Francisco earlier. Pete Alonso and Tomás Nido homered for the Mets, who scored six runs in the series and got swept for the fourth time this year.

NFL – Bears hope improvement on offense continues in Green Bay
The Chicago Bears hope the improvement their offense showed in the second half of their season-opening win carries over to their game at rival Green Bay this week. Chicago started to click in the second half against San Francisco and pulled out a surprising 19-10 win in coach Matt Eberflus’ debut. The Bears finished with 204 yards after managing just 68 in the first two quarters. But there were sparks in the second half that they hope can propel them forward.

NFL – NFL on Prime Video latest foray by leagues into streaming
The NFL is set to make its debut with a streaming service on Thursday night. Amazon Prime Video will show the Los Angeles Chargers’ game against the Kansas City Chiefs. It’s the highest-profile of a series of deals between sports leagues and streaming services. NHL games will be shown on both ESPN+ and Hulu. Major League Baseball has deals with Apple TV+ and Peacock. Industry experts say viewers are becoming more comfortable with streaming games and advances in technology have made it seamless.

NFL – More than 121 million watched NFL games on opening weekend
More than 121 million fans watched a telecast of an NFL game during the league’s opening week, a 5% increase over last season. The league and Nielsen say the average viewership for all games was 18.5 million. That’s the NFL’s best opening weekend in six years and up 3% from last year. NBC had the two highest-viewed games. Tampa Bay’s 19-3 win over Dallas Sunday night averaged 24.5 million and last Thursday’s opening game, in which Buffalo routed the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams 31-10, attracted 21.3 million.

A’ja Wilson has the Las Vegas Aces one victory away from the franchise’s first WNBA championship. She has been dominant on both ends of the court for the Aces, becoming the first player in WNBA history to have over 20 points and 10 rebounds in five consecutive playoff games. Las Vegas leads the best-of-five series 2-0, and Game 3 against the Sun is Thursday night in Connecticut.

NCAAFB – FBS ADs urge college football reform, but not NCAA breakaway
The athletic directors who lead the schools that play major college football want the sport to continue be governed by the NCAA. But only if that governance can be streamlined. LEAD1, an association of Bowl Subdivision ADs, convened 105 of its 131 members for a meeting in Washington that focused mostly on how best to govern major college football. There has been some momentum in the past year to seriously explore breaking FBS away from the NCAA and creating another structure to run the biggest revenue-generator in college sports. For now, though, the preference is for reform within the current structure.

NCAAFB – Oklahoma games versus SEC’s Georgia, Tennessee postponed
Oklahoma’s regular-season games against Southeastern Conference teams will have to wait until the Sooners are officially a member. The SEC says it has instructed Georgia and Tennessee to postpone home-and-home games scheduled for the next two seasons. The second meetings with both teams were scheduled for after Oklahoma and Texas leave the Big 12 and start playing in the SEC in 2025. Georgia was set to visit Oklahoma in 2023. The Sooners were scheduled for a game at Tennessee in 2024. They’ll replace the Georgia games with SMU.

Court revives lawsuits against Ohio State over sex abuse
A federal appeals court is reviving unsettled lawsuits against Ohio State University over decades-old sexual abuse by the late team doctor Richard Strauss. A judge had dismissed most of the unsettled cases last year. The judge acknowledged it’s clear hundreds of young men were abused, but said the legal time limit for the claims had long passed. The plaintiffs argued the clock didn’t start until the allegations came to light in 2018. A three-judge panel of the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the judge’s decision Wednesday and sent the case back to district court for further proceedings.

Soccer – Nike releases US World Cup jerseys some criticize as bland
Nike released the United States’ World Cup jerseys Thursday, including a mostly white design for home matches that was criticized in advance by a pair of American players and some fans. The home jerseys have red and blue stripes on each sleeve. “We just as angry as y’all !!!” forward Tim Weah wrote last month after a version of the home jersey was posted online. “Tried to tell them” midfielder Weston McKennie wrote. The bright blue away jersey has an ice-dying technique somewhat akin to a tie-dye pattern.

Mom must pay $9K for telling daughter to hit sports opponent
A California mother must pay more than $9,000 in restitution and apologize to a teenage basketball player she told her daughter to hit during a youth basketball game in 2021. The woman’s daughter punched the rival player in the neck and she collapsed on the court following the attack that was recorded on cellphone video. Latira Shonty Hunt was criminally charged last year and an Orange County judge on Wednesday allowed Hunt to participate in a diversion program. Hunt’s lawyer says Hunt and her daughter took responsibility for their actions. An attorney for the teenage victim’s family did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

ECHL – Indianapolis suburb planning 8,500-seat sports arena
The Indianapolis suburb of Fishers is luring the Indy Fuel minor league hockey team to the city with a planned 8,500-seat arena. Officials announced Wednesday that the new arena would be a key part of a $550 million project planned by a developer for hotel, apartments, retail and office space along Interstate 69. The Indy Fuel, an affiliate of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks, has been playing its home games at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis since 2014. Plans call for the team to move to the new arena for the 2024-25 season. Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness says the building would be used to host other events such as concerts and high school sports.

MILB – Minor leaguers form union, 17 days after organizing began
More than 5,500 minor league baseball players have formed a union, completing a lightning-fast organization campaign that launched just 17 days earlier in an effort to boost annual salaries as low as $10,400. Martin Scheinman, the sport’s independent arbitrator, notified Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association that a majority of the 5,567 players in the minor league bargaining unit had signed union authorization cards since the drive started Aug. 28. He did not provide the sides a specific number. MLB had agreed Saturday that it would voluntarily accept a union if there was majority support.

  • Astros improve to 6-0 against Detroit – Wednesday Morning Sports Update

    MLB – Major League Baseball
    Last Night
Houston Astros 6, Detroit Tigers 3
Chicago Cubs 4, New York Mets 1
Chicago White Sox 4, Colorado Rockies 2

Astros 6, Tigers 3 – Astros’ Brown hurls 6 strong innings to beat hometown Tigers
Rookie Hunter Brown pitched six strong innings in his hometown and the Houston Astros beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3 on Tuesday. Yordan Alvarez homered and scored three times for the Astros, who are 6-0 against the Tigers this season. Brown allowed two runs. Brown made his second career start in front of a loud group of friends and family. He grew up in suburban Detroit and attended Wayne State, about a mile from Comerica Park. Ryan Pressly struck out the side in the ninth for his 27th save. Tigers starter Drew Hutchison allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings.

White Sox 4, Rockies 2 – Jiménez, Abreu homer as surging White Sox beat Rockies 4-2
Eloy Jiménez hit a three-run homer and Miguel Cairo directed the Chicago White Sox to another victory, topping the Colorado Rockies 4-2. Michael Kopech pitched five effective innings as Chicago remained three games back of AL Central-leading Cleveland, which rallied for a 3-1 win against the Los Angeles Angels. José Abreu also went deep, and Liam Hendriks handled the ninth for his 33rd save. The White Sox improved to 10-4 since Cairo moved from bench coach to acting manager after Tony La Russa stepped away to deal with a heart issue.

Cubs 4, Mets 1 – Mets come up empty for deGrom and lose to Cubs again, 4-1
Jacob deGrom was outpitched by journeyman Adrian Sampson, and the frustrated New York Mets mustered little offense again in a 4-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Ian Happ homered deep into the second deck on a 99 mph heater from deGrom, and No. 9 batter David Bote added his second home run of the season for the Cubs, who won the series opener 5-2 on Monday. One night later, the scuffling Mets squandered another potential chance to increase their slim NL East lead over Atlanta, which played later in San Francisco. New York is 5-6 in a 16-game stretch against Washington, Pittsburgh, Miami and Chicago — all four of those teams are more than 20 games under .500 this season. Pete Alonso homered late for the Mets.

    Today
    Houston (Javier 8-9) at Detroit (Wentz 1-1), 1:10 p.m.               WSJM/WCSY 12:50
Colorado (Freeland 8-9) at Chicago White Sox (Cease 14-6), 2:10 p.m.
    Chicago Cubs (Smyly 6-8) at N.Y. Mets (Peterson 7-4), 7:10 p.m.

MLB – Still no timetable for La Russa’s return to White Sox dugout
The White Sox say manager Tony La Russa will watch the team’s home series against Colorado from a suite while he awaits clearance to return to the dugout. The 77-year-old La Russa is on the mend after leaving the White Sox on Aug. 30 to deal with a heart issue. La Russa rejoined the team in Oakland on Sunday and then flew home with the club for the two-game set against the Rockies. There is no timetable for the Hall of Famer when it comes to returning to the stress of in-game managing. Chicago begins a four-game trip on Thursday in Cleveland.

NFL – Preseason rest led to Week 1 rust for several top QBs
Preseason rest appeared to lead to a little bit of rust in Week 1 for several of the NFL’s top quarterbacks. More than one-third of the league’s Week 1 starting quarterbacks didn’t play a single snap in the preseason and most of those 11 QBs didn’t play anywhere close to their usual form. Whether the poor results were a result of rust or other factors isn’t clear but the poor results are. The only QBs to rest the entire preseason and end up on the winning side in Week 1 were Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins, Justin Herbert of the Chargers and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson.

NFL – Amazon Prime ready to kick off ‘Thursday Night Football’
Thursday night’s game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs on Prime Video kicks off an 11-year agreement between Amazon and the NFL and marks the first time the league has sold a package of games to a streaming service. Amazon won the rights to the prime-time package last March. It was originally supposed to begin in 2023, along with the rest of the league’s broadcasting contracts, but two months later it was announced that Amazon would take over the Thursday night package from Fox a year earlier.

Aces 85, Sun 71 – Aces beat Sun 85-71, take 2-0 series lead in WNBA Finals
A’ja Wilson had 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Las Vegas Aces to an 85-71 victory over the Connecticut Sun in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals. The Aces are now one victory away from the franchise’s first championship with Game 3 on Thursday in Connecticut. Las Vegas was swept in the 2008 Finals when the team was still in San Antonio. The Aces were also swept in 2020. Chelsea Gray added 21 for the Aces while Kelsey Plum rebounded from an awful Game 1 to score 20 points. Courtney Williams scored 18 points to lead Connecticut.

WNBA – Richardson visits Moscow as Griner, Whelan remain jailed
Bill Richardson, who has worked to secure the releases of WNBA star Brittney Griner and another jailed American, Paul Whelan, visited Moscow this week and held meetings with Russian leaders. That’s according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday night. Richardson is a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and a frequent emissary in hostage negotiations. American officials have continued to press Russia to release Griner, who was sentenced last month to nine years in prison in a drug possession case, and Whelan, a Michigan corporate security executive serving a 16-year sentence on espionage-related charges. The U.S. government regards both as wrongfully detained.

NBA/WNBA – Suns owner Sarver suspended 1 year, fined $10M after probe
The NBA suspended Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury owner Robert Sarver for one year and fined him $10 million after an investigation found that he had engaged in what the league called “workplace misconduct and organizational deficiencies.” The findings come nearly a year after the NBA asked a law firm to investigate allegations that Sarver had a history of racist, misogynistic and hostile incidents over his nearly two-decade tenure overseeing the franchise. The league said the results of the investigation were based on interviews with 320 individuals and more than 80,000 documents and other materials. Sarver apologized for “words and actions that offended our employees,” though he disagreed with some of the report’s findings.

NCAAFB – Big Ten – Joseph wants Nebraska head coaching job beyond this season
Mickey Joseph says he wants to be Nebraska’s next head football coach and not just on an interim basis for the next nine games. Joseph met with the media for the first time since taking over for the fired Scott Frost. Joseph says when he accepted the interim position, he did it thinking it would be an opportunity to work toward becoming the permanent head coach. Joseph’s audition starts Saturday with a home game against former conference rival and sixth-ranked Oklahoma.

NHL – Blackhawks D Jake McCabe sidelined by spine surgery
Blackhawks defenseman Jake McCabe will miss the start of the season after he had cervical spine surgery. Team physician Michael Terry says McCabe is expected to return in 10 to 12 weeks. There was no word on when exactly McCabe had the surgery. Forward prospect Jalen Luypen also will miss the start of the season because of a left rotator cuff injury. The team says he is expected to return in 14 to 18 weeks.

NHL – Quebec politicos: New Habs captain Suzuki must learn French
Several of Quebec’s major party leaders say new Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki needs to learn French. The Canadiens announced the appointment of the 23-year-old Ontario native as the team’s captain earlier this week. He has played for Montreal the past three seasons. Liberal Leader Dominique Anglade told reporters it would be a good thing if Suzuki learned French. Parti Québécois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon described Suzuki as a “very good choice” for captain but added that it is important for the Habs captain to learn French.

Golf – PGA/LIV – New PGA Tour season starts in California, LIV to Chicago
After two weeks of an offseason, the PGA Tour is ready for a new season. It starts with the Fortinet Championship in Napa, California. This will be the 10th and final year of a wraparound season. Max Homa is the defending champion. He won twice last season and will be making his Presidents Cup debut next week. Hideki Matsuyama also is playing. LIV Golf resumes outside Chicago at Rich Harvest Farms. The LPGA Tour is in Oregon while Rory McIlroy makes his debut in the Italian Open at Marco Simone. That’s the site of next year’s Ryder Cup.

  • Tigers blanked again for club record 21st time – Tuesday Morning Sports Update

    MLB – Major League Baseball
    Last Night
Houston Astros 7, Detroit Tigers 0
Chicago Cubs 5, New York Mets 2
    White Sox were off

Astros 7, Tigers 0 – Valdez pitches 1st shutout, Astros blank Tigers 7-0
Framber Valdez pitched his first career shutout and the Houston Astros beat the Detroit Tigers 7-0. Valdez posted his 24th straight quality start, tying Jacob DeGrom in 2018 for the longest single-season streak. He gave up six hits and struck out eight with one walk. The Tigers were shut out for the second day in a row and club-record 21st time this season, tying them with the 1973 New York Yankees and 1976 Chicago White Sox for most by a team with a designated hitter. Jeremy Pena had three hits for the Astros and scored twice.

Cubs 5, Mets 2 – Cubs hound Bassitt, beat NL East-leading Mets 5-2
Chris Bassitt had his shortest start in three months, failing to get through the fourth inning as the NL East-leading New York Mets lost to the Chicago Cubs 5-2. The Mets had won each of Bassitt’s last eight starts, a span in which he had a 2.24 ERA. But the right-hander gave up five runs in 3 2/3 innings — his quickest exit since he lasted a season-low 3 1/3 innings against San Diego on July 8. Rafael Ortega and Zach McKinstry homered for the Cubs. The Mets stranded 10 runners — including seven over the first six innings against rookie Javier Assad, who allowed five hits in earning the first victory of his career.

    Tonight
    Houston (Brown 1-0) at Detroit (Hutchison 2-7), 6:40 p.m.        WSJM/WCSY 6:20
    Chicago Cubs (Sampson 1-5) at N.Y. Mets (deGrom 5-1), 7:10 p.m.
Colorado (Kuhl 6-8) at Chicago White Sox (Kopech 4-9), 8:10 p.m.

NFL – National Football League – Week 1
    Yesterday
Seattle Seahawks 17, Denver Broncos 16

Seahawks 17, Broncos 16 – Seahawks survive Wilson’s return, edge Broncos on missed FG
Geno Smith threw two first-half touchdown passes, Denver fumbled twice at the 1-yard line in the second half, and the Seahawks beat the Broncos 17-16 in Russell Wilson’s return to Seattle. Brandon McManus missed a 64-yard field goal attempt with 20 seconds left and the Seahawks escaped with another wild victory involving Wilson at quarterback. Except this time Wilson was the opponent and there will be plenty of questions about Denver coach Nathaniel Hackett’s late-game clock management and decisions in his first game. Denver faced fourth-and-5 at the Seattle 46 and had three timeouts left, but the Broncos ran significant time off the clock before Hackett called timeout and decided to have McManus try the long field goal.

NCAAFB – Notre Dame QB Buchner expected to miss season with injury
Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner is expected to miss the rest of the regular season with an injury to his nonthrowing shoulder that will need surgery. Fighting Irish coach Marcus Freeman says Buchner has a severe AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. Buchner was injured in the fourth quarter of Notre Dame’s surprising loss to Marshall on Saturday. Drew Pyne, who came off the bench after Buchner was hurt, was listed as the starter on Notre Dame’s depth chart of Saturday’s home game against California.

NCAAFB – Narduzzi mum on status of injured Pitt QBs Slovis, Patti
No. 23 Pittsburgh is dealing with uncertainty at quarterback as the Panthers prepare for a road trip to Western Michigan. Starter Kedon Slovis left last week’s overtime loss to Tennessee with an undisclosed injury. Backup Nick Patti injured his left leg early in the fourth quarter but had limited mobility. Head coach Pat Narduzzi offered no update on the status of either quarterback. Dartmouth transfer Derek Kyler and redshirt freshman Nate Yarnell have been competing to be third on the depth chart behind Slovis and Patti.

WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Finals (best of 5)
    Tonight
Connecticut Sun at Las Vegas Aces, 9:00 p.m.                             (LV leads 1-0)

WNBA – Sun beaming with confidence despite loss to Aces in Game 1
The Connecticut Sun might be down one game in the WNBA Finals after losing their first series opener of the postseason, but they haven’t lost confidence thanks to a stringent defensive effort in Game 1. The Sun did what they hoped to do in by holding the league’s No. 1 offense well below their season average. The top-seeded Las Vegas Aces averaged a league-best 90.4 points per game during the regular season and were scoring a playoff-best 92.3 per contest heading into the finals. Sunday, the Sun held Las Vegas to its lowest point total of the postseason in the 67-64 loss.

Tennis – Carlos Alcaraz: 19, US Open champ, No. 1, unique
Carlos Alcaraz is the U.S. Open champion and the No. 1-ranked player in men’s tennis at age 19. And he is exhausted. He tells The Associated Press on Monday that he is not quite sure how he managed to play and win so many tough and long matches in a row to earn his first Grand Slam title. He also says he considers himself a unique player who can hit a lot of different shots and never gives up on a ball. He grew up admiring Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer but is not interested in comparing himself to either.

NBA – Wolves reprimand Edwards for homophobic social media remark
The Minnesota Timberwolves have reprimanded star guard Anthony Edwards for homophobic comments he made on an Instagram video and later apologized for. Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly says the team is “disappointed in the language and actions” Edwards displayed in an Instagram video. Edwards made a disparaging, profane comment about a group of men on a sidewalk he recorded from a vehicle he was inside. Edwards deleted the post and apologized for his remark. Nikola Jokic, Kevin Durant, Rajon Rondo and Kobe Bryant are among players who’ve been disciplined by the NBA in the past for anti-gay language.

Soccer – US Soccer investigation into NWSL misconduct nearing end
U.S. Soccer says an investigation into alleged abuse and misconduct in the National Women’s Soccer League is expected to be completed by early October. The investigation led by former acting U.S. Attorney General Sally Yates was initiated last fall after North Carolina Courage coach Paul Riley was accused of sexual harassment and coercion by two former players. Riley was fired and league Commissioner Lisa Baird stepped down in the wake of the players’ claims. U.S. Soccer and the NWSL and its players union announced separate investigations.

Boston Marathon – Boston Marathon to welcome nonbinary athletes to 2023 race
Nonbinary athletes will be able to run in next year’s Boston Marathon without having to register as members of the men’s or women’s divisions. Race organizers announced the change on Monday as registration opened for the 127th running of the prestigious race next April 17. The Boston Athletic Association says it’s been working to expand opportunities for nonbinary people — not just for the marathon but for the BAA’s other events. It says nonbinary athletes can submit entry applications if they’ve completed a marathon as a nonbinary participant during the current qualifying window. Races around the U.S. increasingly are adding nonbinary divisions and offering equal prize money.

NASCAR – Hamlin chasing NASCAR driver’s title, owner’s championship
Denny Hamlin the driver finds himself in the most enviable of positions heading into Saturday night’s race at Bristol. His second-place run at Kansas Speedway over the weekend nearly ensured his spot in the next round of the playoffs. Denny Hamlin the owner? He’s feeling even better. The car he was chasing down in the waning laps of Sunday’s race happened to be the No. 45 driven by Bubba Wallace for 23XI Racing, which is owned by Hamlin and Hall of Fame basketball star Michael Jordan. The victory pushed the team into the next round in the race for the lesser-known owner’s championship.
