  • Dallas over Giants on MNF; Cubs, Sox and Tigers are off – Tuesday Morning Sports Update

NFL – National Football League – Week 3
    Last Night
Dallas Cowboys 23, New York Giants 16

Cowboys 23, Giants 16 – Lamb’s 1-handed TD catch gives Dallas 23-16 win over Giants
CeeDee Lamb made a one-handed touchdown catch with 8:30 to play to cap a go-ahead drive, and the Dallas Cowboys beat the New York Giants 23-16. Ezekiel Elliott scored on a 1-yard run to ignite a comeback from a seven-point deficit and Brett Maher kicked three field goals as the Cowboys beat the Giants for the 10th time in 11 games. Cooper Rush threw for 210 yards and a 1-yard TD in winning his second straight start. Saquon Barkley scored on a 36-yard touchdown run and Graham Gano added three field goals for the Giants.

NFL – NFL ends Pro Bowl; skills competitions, flag game instead
The NFL is replacing the Pro Bowl with weeklong skills competitions and a flag football game. The new event will be renamed “The Pro Bowl Games” and will feature AFC and NFC players showcasing their football and non-football skills in challenges over several days. The 2023 Games will be held in Las Vegas, and the flag football game at Allegiant Stadium is Sunday, Feb. 5. Peyton Manning and his Omaha Productions company will help shape programming and promote the event’s content throughout the week. Manning, a 14-time Pro Bowl pick during his Hall of Fame career, will provide his perspective, and will also be a part of the coaching staff for flag game.

NFL – Browns’ Garrett injured in one-car accident, status unknown
Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett remains under hospital care after being involved in a one-car accident following practice. The team says Garrett did not suffer life-threatening injuries but provided no further details on his condition. His agent said Garrett has remained alert and responsive while getting medical attention. The Ohio State Highway Patrol says it responded to a rollover crash around 3 p.m. Troopers found a gray Porsche 911 Turbo S on the right side of the road with rollover damage. The highway patrol said Garrett and a unidentified female passenger were both transported to a hospital. The crash is still under investigation. Garrett was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

NFL – Bucs relocating to Miami area due to potential impact of Ian
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will relocate football operations to the Miami area in preparation for next weekend’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs ahead of the potential impact of Hurricane Ian on Florida’s Gulf Coast. The Buccaneers announced Monday night that the team will leave Tampa on Tuesday and relocate in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The Buccaneers are expected to practice at the Miami Dolphins’ training complex in Miami Gardens, Florida, starting on Wednesday and continue through this week’s preparations, if necessary.

Covid/Sports – Canada won’t require masks on planes, drops vaccine mandate
The Canadian government will no longer require people to wear masks on planes. Government officials also confirmed Canada is dropping the vaccine requirement for people entering the country at the end of the month. Canada, like the United States, requires foreign nationals to be vaccinated when entering the country. No change in the mandate is expected in the U.S. in the near term. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has agreed to let a cabinet order enforcing mandatory COVID-19 vaccination requirements at the border expire Sept. 30. Transport Canada is also removing travel requirements and as of October 1 people won’t have to wear masks on trains and planes.

NBA – Pistons guard Cade Cunningham bulked up for 2nd NBA season
Cade Cunningham packed on about 10 pounds of muscle in his first NBA offseason, hoping the added weight will help him lift his game and the Detroit Pistons to another level. The 6-foot-6 guard validated Detroit’s decision to draft him No. 1 overall last year. He averaged 17.4 points to lead all rookies, ranked second among first-year players with 5.6 assists a game and grabbed 5.5 rebounds after overcoming an ankle injury that slowed the start of his career. He and the rest of the Pistons are back for camp, eager to improve on last year’s finish.

NBA – Bulls set sights higher, look to build on run to playoffs
The Chicago Bulls have their sights set higher after making the playoffs for the first time since 2017. They led the Eastern Conference for a big portion of the season with DeMar DeRozan playing at an MVP level. The Bulls were knocked out in the first round by Milwaukee. Chicago returns with its core group of players intact. The Bulls will be without point guard Lonzo Ball for at least 4-6 weeks after left knee surgery.

NBA – Turner heads into another season with Pacers, trade talk
Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner has grown accustomed to the trade talk. He saw two-time All-Star Domantas Sabonis and Caris LeVert dealt away in February. He saw guard Malcolm Brogdon sent to Boston over the summer. So it’s no surprise to Turner that he’s at the center of trade rumors yet again as the longest-tenured Pacers player enters the final season of his contract. But Turner doesn’t seem to mind. For now, the 26-year-old still suits up for the team that drafted him and as long he stays in town, Turner intends to play winning basketball.

NCAAFB – Texas Tech fined for field storming when Texas player shoved
Texas Tech was fined $50,000 and reprimanded by the Big 12 Conference because fans stormed the field following an overtime victory against rival Texas. A video of the celebration shows one of those fans shoving a Longhorns player. Texas Tech posted on social media a still shot from the video asking for help in identifying that fan. Texas senior edge rusher Ovie Oghoufo was shoved from behind by one fan running onto the field Saturday after the Red Raiders won 37-34. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian says Oghoufo showed great poise and composure in what could have turned into an ugly situation.

NCAAFB – Ga Tech fires Geoff Collins in 4th season with 10-28 mark
Geoff Collins is out as Georgia Tech’s football coach. Collins was fired in the midst of his fourth season after failing to make headway with a brash plan to turn the Yellow Jackets into a national powerhouse through branding and promoting Atlanta’s big-city culture. Collins was dumped two days after a 27-10 loss to Central Florida left him with a record of 10-28. Collins finished his tenure with a winning percentage of just .263 — the lowest of 13 full-time coaches in the school’s history. Georgia Tech also fired athletic director Todd Stansbury.

NASCAR – AP Exclusive: Jimmie Johnson to retire from full-time racing
Seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson tells The Associated Press that he is retiring from full-time racing and will turn his focus toward spending time with family. He figures his future schedule will include no more than 10 bucket-list events. The 47-year-old says he has no idea what his racing schedule will look like, or whether he’ll run any IndyCar races next season. He wants to do the 24 Hours of Le Mans with NASCAR and Hendrick Motorsports, and has interest in “The Double” of the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. But he also wants to travel with his family and perhaps spend a year living abroad.

  • Tigers sweep White Sox giving AL Central title to Cleveland – Monday Morning Sports Update

NFL – National Football League – Week 3
    Yesterday
Minnesota Vikings 28, Detroit Lions 24
Chicago Bears 23, Houston Texas 20
Indianapolis Colts 20, Kansas City Chiefs 17

    Vikings 28, Lions 24 – Vikings rally past Lions 28-24 on Osborn’s last-minute TD
Kirk Cousins connected with a wide-open K.J. Osborn for the go-ahead, 28-yard touchdown with 45 seconds remaining, and the Minnesota Vikings rallied to beat the Detroit Lions 28-24. Osborn blew by former Vikings cornerback Mike Hughes on a corner route to snag the in-stride pass and cruise across the goal line to give Minnesota the lead for the first time. The Vikings then didn’t let Jared Goff and the Lions cross midfield. Dalvin Cook rushed for 96 yards and a score before leaving with a shoulder injury for the Vikings, who fell behind 14-0 and 24-14.

Bears 23, Texans 20 – Smith INT sets up game-ending FG as Bears beat Texans 23-20
Roquan Smith set up Cairo Santos’ game-ending field goal when he intercepted Davis Mills deep in Houston territory, and the Chicago Bears beat former coach Lovie Smith and the Texans 23-20. Khalil Herbert ran for a career-high 157 yards and two touchdowns. The Texans had third-and-1 at their 26 when defensive tackle Angelo Blackson tipped a pass intended for Rex Burkhead. Smith, who missed practice all week because of a hip injury, intercepted it at the 30 and returned it to the 12. Chicago had Herbert run, then downed the ball twice before Santos nailed a 30-yarder as time expired.

Colts 20, Chiefs 17 – Ryan drives Colts to 1st win with 20-17 comeback vs Chiefs
Matt Ryan threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to rookie Jelani Woods with 24 seconds left to give the Indianapolis Colts a 20-17 comeback victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Ryan earned his first win with the Colts in their home opener by throwing for two scores, both to Woods. Indy sealed it with a late interception — Patrick Mahomes’ first of the season as the Chiefs fell to 2-1. Mahomes lost for only the third time in September despite leading almost the entire second half. Ryan won it with a brilliant 16-play, 76-yard drive that was aided by a personal foul call on Chris Jones following a third-down sack.

    Last Night
Detroit Tigers 4, Chicago White Sox 1
Chicago Cubs 8, Pittsburgh Pirates 3

Tigers 4, White Sox 1 – Chisox eliminated in AL Central, 6th loss in row; Tigers win
Dylan Cease pitched six scoreless innings, but the White Sox bullpen got tagged and Chicago was eliminated in the AL Central with a 4-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Jonathan Schoop hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth and Chicago’s sixth straight loss clinched the division for Cleveland. The Guardians held a big lead in the ninth inning of their game at Texas when the clinching became official. The White Sox, who won the AL Central last season in their first year under manager Tony La Russa, slipped to 76-77. La Russa hasn’t run the team since last August because of a medical issue, and Miguel Cairo has been the acting manager.

Cubs 8, Pirates 3 – Wisdom hits 25th homer, Cubs pull away from Pirates 8-3
Patrick Wisdom hit a three-run homer and Adrian Sampson tossed six efficient innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-3. Wisdom took the first pitch he saw from Pittsburgh reliever Manny Bañuelos and sent it into the Pirates bullpen well behind the center-field wall with two outs in the fifth for his 25th home run of the season. Wisdom is the fourth third baseman in Cubs history to reach the 25 home run-plateau at least twice. Sampson allowed one run to improve to 2-1 with a 1.55 ERA this month. Bryan Reynolds homered for Pittsburgh, which has lost 9 of 10.

    NCAAFB – College Football – Week 4
    Saturday
    (4) Michigan 34, Maryland 27
    (14) Penn State 33, Central Michigan 14

    Minnesota 34, Michigan State 7
San Jose State 34, Western Michigan 6

NCAAFB – Vols, Wolfpack join top 10; Florida State returns
Tennessee and North Carolina State have broken into the top 10 of The Associated Press college football poll. Florida State is back in the rankings for the first time in four years. Georgia remained No. 1 and received 55 of 63 first-place votes in the Top 25. No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Michigan and No. 5 Clemson all held their places. Oklahoma’s upset loss to Kansas State created room for teams to move up, like No. 6 Southern California and No. 7 Kentucky. Tennessee moved up three to No. 8. Oklahoma State remained at nine and North Carolina State jumped to No. 10.

NCAAFB – MSU maybe having second thoughts about Tucker’s deal
Michigan State blew up the market for college football coaches last season by giving Mel Tucker a massive 10-year contract as the Spartans charged out to a 9-1 start in his second campaign. It was a bit puzzling at the time. After the Spartans were run over for the second straight week to fall to 4-3 in their last seven games, the 10-year megadeal is looking even more questionable. The coach-as-savior mentality is rampant in college football and it is causing desperate schools to make costly decisions, fraught with risk.

Golf – Spieth goes 5-0 as Americans rule Presidents Cup again
The Presidents Cup stays with the Americans, just like it always does. The Americans finished off a five-point victory. Jordan Spieth capped off a perfect week at Quail Hollow by going 5-0. His match helped set the tone for the Americans. The International team already was depleted by players who defected to Saudi-funded LIV Golf and were not eligible. It still showed plenty of fight. It just doesn’t have a cup to show for it. The Americans won for the ninth straight time, and their only loss was in 1998 since the matches began in 1994.

Golf – Champions – Flesch wins PGA Tour Champions event at Pebble Beach
Steve Flesch birdied the 18th hole at Pebble Beach to win the Pure Insurance Championship for his second PGA Tour Champions victory of the season. Flesch birdied the first four holes and five on the front nine in a strong start, then stalled on the back. But he got the only birdie he needed on the par-5 finishing hole for a one-stroke victory over Ernie Els, Steven Alker and Paul Stankowski. Flesch closed with a 4-under 68 for a three-round total of 11-under 205 and earned $330,000. The 55-year-old won the Mitsubishi Electric Classic in May.

NASCAR – Reddick wins NASCAR playoff race in long, tiring Texas day
Tyler Reddick opened the round of 12 in NASCAR’s playoff with a victory at Texas. His win comes a week after being one of the first four Cup drivers knocked out of title contention. No contender won any of the first three races of the playoffs, a first in any round in this postseason format. The trend continued with the eliminated Reddick leading 53 of the final 54 laps on a long race day that went into the night. There were a track-record 17 cautions, a record 36 lead changes, a 56-minute red flag for lightning and multiple tire issues leading to crashes.

NASCAR – Tumultuous, tiring start to NASCAR’s round of 12 at Texas
The 334 laps at Texas Motor Speedway provided quite a tumultuous start to the NASCAR playoff round of 12. There were a lot of tire issues that contributed to a track-record 16 cautions. There was also a 56-minute red flag for lightning, and a record 36 lead changes among 19 drivers. Chase Elliott entered as the points leader, and was ahead in the race around the midway part when he had hard contact and a fiery finish. Playoff contender Christopher Bell also got knocked out after a tire issue. And there were some bumping between William Byron and Denny Hamlin.

Brown 29, Steelers 17 – Brissett, Browns rebound from collapse, beat Steelers 29-17
Jacoby Brissett threw two touchdown passes, Nick Chubb ran for a score and the Cleveland Browns bounced back from their epic meltdown four days earlier to beat the rival Pittsburgh Steelers 29-17. The Browns built a nine-point lead early in the fourth on Chubb’s 1-yard run and then held on for dear life. On Sunday, Cleveland blew a 13-point lead in the final two minutes and lost by a point to the New York Jets. The Steelers pulled within 23-17 on Chris Boswell’s 34-yard field goal with 1:48 left but couldn’t recover an onside kick. The Browns concluded the game with a meaningless defensive touchdown.

NFL – Bears’ Smith misses second straight practice with hip injury
Chicago Bears star linebacker Roquan Smith missed his second consecutive practice because of a hip injury, leaving his status for Sunday’s game in question. The Bears are scheduled to host former coach Lovie Smith and the Houston Texans. Smith has played every snap this season. Defensive coordinator Alan Williams said before practice he expected him to be ready to play “as far as I know.” Smith missed the preseason after he opted to “hold-in” with contract extension talks at a standstill.

NFL – Smith returns to Soldier Field as Texans seek win over Bears
Lovie Smith makes another return to Soldier Field, and the Houston Texans try to pick up their first win when they visit the Chicago Bears. Smith led the Bears to an 81-63 record and a Super Bowl appearance from 2004-12. He is 0-2 against Chicago, with losses coaching Tampa Bay in 2014 at Soldier Field and 2015 at Raymond James Stadium. The Bears have not gotten their passing game going. Justin Fields has attempted a league-low 28 passes. His 15 completions are tied for 31st among qualifiers. Chicago has by far the fewest yards passing at 153 yards.

NCAAFB – Utah student charged for terrorism threat over football game
A University of Utah student was arrested on suspicion of making terrorist threats after police said she threatened to detonate a nuclear reactor if the school’s football team failed to win a game last Saturday. Charging documents filed in Salt Lake City on Wednesday allege that the student posted threats before Utah’s game against San Diego State University on Saturday. The University of Utah said Thursday that the student admitted to posting the threat and told investigators that it was meant as a joke. Utah defeated San Diego State in Saturday’s game, 35-7.

NBA – AP source: Jazz trade Bogdanovic to Detroit for Olynyk, Lee
The revamping of the Utah roster continued Thursday with the Jazz agreeing to send forward Bojan Bogdanovic to the Detroit Pistons for forward Kelly Olynyk and guard Saben Lee, according to a person with knowledge of the trade. The person confirmed the trade Thursday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because not all details had been completed. That prevented the deal from being announced by either team. The Jazz now have traded all but one of their primary starters from last season.

NBA – Celtics suspend coach Ime Udoka for 2022-23 season
The Boston Celtics have suspended coach Ime Udoka for the 2022-23 season. The move takes effect immediately and with no guarantee he will be back with the franchise. The Celtics said Thursday night that Udoka was suspended for “violations of team policies.” Earlier Thursday, two people with knowledge of the matter said Udoka was being sanctioned because of an improper relationship with a member of the organization. Those people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team did not reveal that detail publicly.

NHL – Kane, Toews have no plans to leave the Blackhawks — yet
Chicago Blackhawks stars Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews haven’t started making plans to leave the only NHL team they’ve ever played for. The franchise’s marquee names said they aren’t even thinking about it as rebuilding Blackhawks opened training camp Thursday. The 33-year-old Kane and 34-year-old Toews are in the final years of eight-year, $84 million contracts with no movement clauses. Both will become free agents at the end of the 2022-23 season, unless they consent to a trade to another team before then.

Golf – Newcomers Young, Homa help US take Presidents Cup lead
Cameron Young didn’t flinch in his first Presidents Cup. Neither did Max Homa. They are among the new blood on the United States team and they made the most of their opportunities in alternate-shot play, earning points to help the Americans take a 4-1 lead over the International team at Quail Hollow. Young buried a 25-foot birdie putt on the par-4 17th hole as he and Collin Morikawa closed out Tom Kim and K.H. Lee 2-and-1. Homa and Tony Finau won a tight match by making par on the 18th hole after Mito Pereira hooked his drive into the trees.

    MLB – Major League Baseball
    Last Night
Baltimore Orioles 8, Detroit Tigers 1
Cleveland Guardians 8, Chicago White Sox 2
Chicago Cubs 4, Miami Marlins 2

Orioles 8, Tigers 1 – Lyles throws complete game as Orioles beat Tigers 8-1
Jordan Lyles threw the second complete game of his career, Kyle Stowers homered and drove in three runs, and the Baltimore Orioles avoided their first-ever season sweep by the Detroit Tigers with an 8-1 victory. Rookie Gunnar Henderson and two hits and an RBI for the Orioles, who snapped a nine-game losing streak to Detroit dating to last season. Baltimore moved within four games of Seattle for the AL’s third and final wild card. Lyles allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts and no walks, throwing 94 pitches. His previous complete game occurred on Sept. 30, 2012, for Houston against Milwaukee.

Guardians 8, White Sox 2 – Kwan, McKenzie pace Guardians to 8-2 victory over White Sox
Steven Kwan homered among his three hits and Triston McKenzie struck out 13 as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Chicago White Sox 8-2 to move closer to their first American League Central title since 2018. Kwan had hits in each of his first three at-bats, capped by his fifth homer of the season off Lance Lynn (7-6) on the first pitch of the fourth inning. The Guardians (82-67) have won seven of their last eight games while reducing their magic number for winning the division to seven. Cleveland is assured of winning the division in the event of finishing in a tie for first with Chicago. McKenzie (11-11) gave up two runs and six hits while matching his career high with eight innings.

Cubs 4, Marlins 2 – Happ’s sacrifice fly caps 3-run rally, Cubs beat Marlins 4-3
Ian Happ hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth and the Chicago Cubs rallied to beat the Miami Marlins 4-3. Patrick Wisdom hit his 23rd homer for the Cubs. Down 3-1, the Cubs scored three in the eighth without a hit against Marlins relievers Steven Okert and Dylan Floro. Keegan Thompson (10-5) pitched three scoreless innings of relief. Activated from the injured list earlier Wednesday, Thompson allowed one hit and struck out six. For the second consecutive night, Marlins reliever Steven Okert got the loss after unable to hold a lead in the eighth. It was the Marlins’ 37th one-run loss, matching the club record set in 1993.

NFL – Fields clarifies remarks, says he didn’t mean to offend fans
Chicago quarterback Justin Fields took time to clarify comments he made following the loss to the Green Bay Packers. He says he did not mean to come off as dismissive of Bears fans. Fields drew some criticism on social media for saying after the game the loss “hurts more in the locker room” and that fans “aren’t putting in any work.” Fields said Wednesday he meant fans weren’t putting in the work “regarding the game on Sunday.” He also said he was “frustrated” and didn’t even want to conduct his mandatory postgame news conference.

NFL – Colts scrambling to find quick fix for stagnant offense
The Indianapolis Colts’ offense is built around Matt Ryan and Jonathan Taylor. Ryan was the league’s MVP in 2016. Taylor is the defending rushing champ. And yet two weeks into the season, the Colts have the league’s lowest-scoring offense at 10 points per game. Even worse: Patrick Mahomes and the high-octane Kansas City Chiefs are coming to town Sunday. Ryan, Taylor and coach Frank Reich are scrambling to find solutions so they can avoid remaining winless.

NCAAFB – Irish looking for offense to take advantage of Tar Heels ‘D’
Notre Dame’s choppy offense finally found smoother sailing last weekend. First-year coach Marcus Freeman wants to see the unit go full steam ahead at North Carolina. The Fighting Irish struggled under starting quarterback Tyler Buchner before he went down with a season-ending injury after Week 2. And Drew Pyne, Buchner’s replacement, finished strong in Notre Dame’s first win. But while the Irish offense ranks among the worst in the FBS, the same is true of the North Carolina defense. The Tar Heels tried to fix their problems during the bye week, but Freeman knows Notre Dame needs the offense to pull its weight Saturday.

NBA – Bulls’ Lonzo Ball to have knee surgery, miss start of season
Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball is scheduled to have surgery on his left knee next week for the second time in less than a year and figures to miss the start of the season. The Bulls said Ball will undergo an arthroscopic debridement Wednesday in Los Angeles. He will be re-evaluated in four to six weeks. Ball played a major role in Chicago’s resurgence last year after being acquired from New Orleans in a sign-and-trade deal. He was limited to 35 games and did not play after Jan. 14. Ball had surgery for a torn meniscus two weeks later.

NBA/WNBA – Suspended Sarver says he’s decided to sell Suns, Mercury
Robert Sarver says he has started the process of selling the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury, a move that comes only eight days after he was suspended by the NBA over workplace misconduct including racist speech and hostile behavior toward employees. Sarver made the announcement Wednesday, saying selling “is the best course of action.” He has owned the teams since 2004, when he purchased it for about $400 million. He is not the lone owner, but the primary one. Forbes recently estimated the value of the Suns at $1.8 billion.

WNBA – Griner’s absence from World Cup weighing on US teammates
Brittney Griner’s absence is weighing on the minds of her USA Basketball teammates, who are trying to fill the void created by her absence as they prepare for the FIBA World Cup that begins Thursday in Australia. The Americans are expected to win without the 6-foot-8 Griner, but replacing her spirit and impact on and off the court is a challenging task. The team is keeping her in their thoughts by having no one wear her No. 15. For years, the Americans wore jersey numbers 4-15. In the World Cup they will use 4-14 and No. 16. Brionna Jones will be wearing No. 16.

NHL – Training camps open around NHL after another short offseason
Training camps open around the NHL this week less than 90 days since Colorado won the Stanley Cup. Players are used to the short summers by now after the pandemic squeezed the past two offseasons. But this is the return to the normal calendar of meaningful hockey from October through mid-June. A full camp for teams with new coaches and those who took over last season also has its benefits.

Nassar – Ex-coach’s Nassar-related conviction will not be reinstated
The Michigan Supreme Court won’t reinstate the conviction of a former Michigan State University gymnastics coach who was accused of lying to investigators about campus sports doctor Larry Nassar. The state’s highest court declined to take an appeal from the attorney general’s office. Prosecutors had widened their investigation beyond Nassar, who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing athletes, mostly female gymnasts. But prosecutors now have lost two high-profile cases. Kathie Klages was sentenced to 90 days in jail for lying to police about what she knew about Nassar back in 1997. But the Michigan Court of Appeals in December threw out her conviction and said her statements in a 2018 interview with were not crucial.

  • Critical loss for White Sox, now 5 back of Cleveland – Wednesday Morning Sports Update

    MLB – Major League Baseball
    Last Night
Detroit Tigers 3, Baltimore Orioles 2
Cleveland Guardians 10, Chicago White Sox 7 – 11 Innings
Chicago Cubs 2, Miami Marlins 1

Tigers 3, Orioles 2 – Wentz sharp for Tigers in 3-2 victory over Baltimore
Joey Wentz took a shutout into the sixth inning and Akil Baddoo and Kerry Carpenter homered to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the fading Baltimore Orioles. Wentz allowed two hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. It was the third time in five big league starts that the rookie has held the opposition scoreless. Baddoo’s 448-foot home run in the third opened the scoring, bringing home two runs. Carpenter added a solo shot in the seventh. Rookie standout Gunnar Henderson hit a two-run homer in the seventh for Baltimore’s first runs of the series. The Tigers routed the Orioles 11-0 the previous night.

Guardians 10, White Sox 7 – F/11 – Straw leads Guardians to 10-7 win over White Sox in 11
Myles Straw had a tiebreaking two-run double in Cleveland’s five-run 11th inning, and the Guardians beat the Chicago White Sox 10-7 to move closer to the American League Central title. The Guardians won for the 12th time in 16 extra-inning games this season and expanded their lead to five games over the White Sox. Straw got his go-ahead hit off Jake Diekman (5-4), and Steven Kwan followed with his fourth hit — an RBI single — to score Straw. Kwan scored on Jose Ramirez’s sacrifice fly, and a throwing error by Chicago catcher Seby Zavala allowed Amed Rosario to score with another run. Emmanuel Clase (3-4) earned the win after his fourth blown save in 40 chances in the 10th.

Cubs 2, Marlins 1 – Bote drives in both runs, Cubs edge Marlins 2-1
David Bote hit a tying home run in the seventh inning, then added a sacrifice fly in the eighth that lifted the Chicago Cubs over the Miami Marlins 2-1. Esteban Quiroz got the first two hits of his major league career and P.J. Higgins also had two hits for the Cubs, who snapped a three-game losing skid. The 30-year-old Quiroz was promoted from Triple-A Saturday. Chicago loaded the bases with no outs without a hit in the eighth against reliever Steven Okert. Michael Hermosillo was hit by a pitch and Zach McKinstry reached on a sacrifice bunt when catcher Jacob Stallings threw late to second. Quiroz had a bunt single and Bote hit a go-ahead flyball.

COVID-19/Sports – Official: Canada likely to drop vaccine requirement to enter
An official familiar with the matter says Canada will likely drop the vaccine requirement for people who enter Canada by the end of September. Canada is similar to the United States in that it requires non-citizens to be vaccinated when entering the country. It is not immediately known whether the U.S. will make a similar move by Sept. 30. The official says that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau needs to give final sign off on the decision but that the government will likely be dropping the requirement as well ending random COVID testing at airports. Filling out information in the unpopular ArriveCan app will also no longer be required.

LLWS – Family sues Little League over bunk bed fall, head injury
A Utah boy who suffered a serious head injury after falling from a bunk bed during last month’s Little League World Series has returned home from the hospital, and his family is suing the league and the company that made the bed. The family’s lawyer said Tuesday that 12-year-old Easton Oliverson has undergone three brain operations and is now experiencing seizures. He said the boy fell in his sleep on Aug. 15. The lawsuit accuses Little League International and Savoy Contract Furniture of Williamsport of negligence for using or selling bunk beds without safety railings. A Little League spokesperson declined comment, and the furnituremaker did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

NFL – Bills CB Dane Jackson avoids major injury, out of hospital
Buffalo Bills cornerback Dane Jackson was released from the hospital after tests revealed he sustained no major injury to his neck or spinal cord when he was struck by a teammate. The Bills also revealed Tuesday that safety Micah Hyde was sent to the hospital for tests after he was carted off the field with his own neck injury later in Monday night’s win over Tennessee. Hyde is also out of the hospital. Jackson’s injury was considered to be more serious. He was driven off the field in an ambulance. Later Tuesday, he was back at the Bills’ facility for treatment..

NFL – Sunday, Monday football games fight for ratings supremacy
As often happens, NBC’s ‘Sunday Night Football’ game won the week’s rating competition, but the Chicago-Green Bay game had a tough battle with the revamped “Monday Night Football” game. That game, between Denver and Seattle, was seen by nearly 10.3 million on ABC and another 8 million people when it was simulcast on ESPN. CBS’ “60 Minutes” was the most popular non-football game on TV, with its season debut featuring an interview with President Joe Biden reaching 10.2 million people. During a week when broadcast networks mostly had one last week of reruns in preparation for starting the fall TV season, NBC’s summer hit “America’s Got Talent” had its swan song.

NFL – Fan arrested for allegedly throwing bottle at Browns owner
A fan was arrested for allegedly throwing a plastic water bottle and hitting Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam during the closing moments of Sunday’s 31-30 home loss to the New York Jets. Cleveland police say 51-year-old Jeffrey Miller of Rocky River was charged with assault, disorderly conduct and failure to comply. Miller was spotted by video surveillance throwing the bottle and was followed with cameras. After the Jets took the lead, a video showed Haslam walking toward the tunnel in FirstEnergy Stadium when he was struck by the projectile. A person familiar with Browns’ decision says the team intends to ban Miller from the stadium.

NHL – AP source: MacKinnon signs 8-year deal, highest paid in NHL
The Colorado Avalanche are making Nathan MacKinnon the highest-paid player in the NHL’s salary cap era. The 27-year-old signed an eight-year contract that is worth $100.8 million, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the team did not announce terms of the contract. His new $12.6 million salary cap hit that goes into effect at the start of the 2023-24 season surpasses Connor McDavid’s $12.5 million as the highest in the league.

NHL – Longtime NHL defenseman Zdeno Chara, 45, retires as a Bruin
Zdeno Chara has announced his retirement after playing 24 NHL seasons and captaining the Boston Bruins to the Stanley Cup in 2011. The 6-foot-9 defenseman from Slovakia is calling it a career at age 45. He returned to Boston to make that announcement two years after splitting with the Bruins following 14 seasons. Chara won the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman in 2009 and also spent time with the New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals. He’s a candidate for the Hockey Hall of Fame based not only on his consistency through 1,880 regular-season games but also his stature in the game from Slovakia to North America.

Golf – US guarding against overconfidence in Presidents Cup
The Americans are big favorites in the Presidents Cup. And it might be a matter of protecting against overconfidence. Captain Davis Love III doesn’t see that as an issue. He mentions all the winning photos of past U.S. teams and how this group wants to be in the next picture. Loves says this 12-man squad doesn’t have a record because it has never played together. International captain Trevor Immelman looks forward to what he sees as an uphill battle. He lost a lot of players to LIV Golf. But he likes the 12 who have rallied around the underdog label.

Tennis – Roger Federer to discuss his retirement on Wednesday
Roger Federer’s farewell news conference will come before what he has said will be the last competitive tennis event of his career. Federer will meet with the media Wednesday to discuss walking away from the game at age 41 after 20 Grand Slam titles. Federer is in London and has been practicing at the arena that will host the indoor hard-court matches for the Laver Cup. The event founded by his management team begins Friday with the fifth edition of its Team Europe vs. Team World format. The main rivals whose careers overlapped with Federer’s also are participating: Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

  • Tigers hire new GM, then shutout Baltimore – Tuesday Morning Sports Update

MLB – Tigers hire Giants GM Harris to oversee baseball operations
Scott Harris was hired as the Detroit Tigers’ president of baseball operations, leaving the San Francisco Giants after three years as general manager. The 36-year-old Harris takes over for general manager Al Avila, fired on Aug. 10. The Tigers went 404-573 under Avila, who failed to take the team to the postseason during seven seasons overseeing baseball operations. Detroit started the season with high expectations but entered Monday night’s game against Baltimore last in the AL Central at 55-91.

    Tigers 11, Orioles 0 – Alexander loses no-hit bid in 7th as Tigers beat O’s 11-0
Tyler Alexander held Baltimore hitless until the seventh inning, Riley Greene and Ryan Kreidler had three RBIs apiece and the Detroit Tigers stalled the Orioles’ playoff push with an 11-0 victory. The loss on Monday night dropped Baltimore five games behind Seattle in the race for the last of three AL wild-card spots. Both teams have 16 games left, and the Mariners own the tiebreaker advantage for winning the season series. Alexander permitted only baserunners over the first six innings, both on walks, before Ryan Mountcastle led off the seventh by lofting a single in front of Greene in center field. Anthony Santander followed with another single, but both runners were stranded.

Marlins 10, Cubs 3 – De La Cruz hits grand slam, Marlins beat Cubs 10-3
Bryan De La Cruz hit a grand slam in the third inning and the Miami Marlins beat the Chicago Cubs 10-3. Rookie Charles Leblanc and Jon Berti also went deep while Miguel Rojas had three hits for the Marlins. Berti also singled twice and stole two bases, giving him an NL-leading 36. Miami starter Edward Cabrera threw five innings of three-run ball. The rookie right-hander gave up three hits, walked three, struck out four and hit two batters. De La Cruz hit an opposite-field drive to right-center off Cubs starter Wade Miley, who allowed seven runs, three of them earned, in three-plus innings.

Buffalo Bills 41, Tennessee Titans 7
Philadelphia Eagles 24, Minnesota Vikings 7

Bills 41, Titans 7 – Diggs scores 3 TDs for Bills in 41-7 rout of Titans
Josh Allen threw four touchdown passes, including three to Stefon Diggs, and the Buffalo Bills rolled past Derrick Henry and the Tennessee Titans 41-7 in their home opener. The Bills followed a season-opening 31-10 rout of the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams by throttling an opponent that has been their nemesis in each of the past two seasons. Fullback Reggie Gilliam and linebacker Matt Milano, with a 43-yard interception return, also scored touchdowns for Buffalo. Buffalo’s defense limited Tennessee to 182 yards of offense and 12 first downs, while registering two sacks and forcing four turnovers. The Titans fell to 0-2 for the first time since 2012.

Eagles 24, Vikings 7 – Hurts, so good! Eagles QB dominant in 24-7 win over Vikings
Jalen Hurts threw for 333 yards and a touchdown and he ran for 57 yards and two more scores to lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a 24-7 win over the Minnesota Vikings. Hurts had 301 total yards in the first half in the breakout game of his young career. The Eagles led 24-7 at halftime. Cornerback Darius Slay had two interceptions in the second half. The Eagles improved to 2-0. The Vikings are 1-1. Kirk Cousins and top target Justin Jefferson struggled for Minnesota.

WNBA – WNBA players skipping Russia, choosing other places to play
Top WNBA players are finding other places to compete this winter, not wanting to go back to Russia after the arrest and conviction of Brittney Griner on drug possession charges and the country’s invasion of Ukraine. Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones are going to Turkey. Courtney Vandersloot is headed to Hungary. All three were part of the same Russian super team as Griner. That club won five EuroLeague titles in the past eight seasons and has been dominant for nearly two decades with former greats DeLisha Milton Jones and Diana Taurasi playing there. Nearly a dozen WNBA players competed in Russia last winter and none of them are heading back this year.

NCAAMBKB – College hoops player Emoni Bates charged with 2 felonies
College basketball player Emoni Bates has been charged with two felonies related to the discovery of a gun during a traffic stop near Ann Arbor, Michigan. Bates transferred to Eastern Michigan after one season at Memphis. Authorities say Bates was pulled over after failing to stop at an intersection Sunday night. Bates was released Monday. Defense attorney Steve Haney says the vehicle and the gun didn’t belong to Bates. Bates averaged nearly 10 points a game last season as a freshman at Memphis. He missed much of the season with a back injury. Bates will return to court on Oct. 6.
