Eagles 38, Lions 35 – Jalen Hurts, Eagles too much for Lions in opener 38-35
Jalen Hurts accounted for 333 yards and a touchdown and A.J. Brown had a career-high-tying 155 yards receiving in his Philadelphia debut, helping the Eagles hold on for a 38-35 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. The Eagles scored 24 points in the second quarter and had a 17-point lead in the fourth that was cut to three when Jared Goff threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to DJ Chark with 3:51 left. Philadelphia sealed the win with Miles Sanders’ 24-yard run on third down and Hurts’ sneak that converted a fourth down on the final possession.
Bears 19, 49ers 10 – Fields throws 2 TDs, Bears top 49ers 19-10 in Eberflus debut
Justin Fields threw for two second-half touchdowns, Eddie Jackson set up a TD with an interception and the Chicago Bears gave Matt Eberflus a win in his head coaching debut, beating the San Francisco 49ers 19-10 on a rain-soaked afternoon. Fields shook off a rough first half, throwing a 51-yard TD to Dante Pettis in the third quarter and connecting with Equanimeous St. Brown for an 18-yarder early in the fourth to put Chicago on top 13-10. Jackson then picked off Trey Lance near midfield for his first interception since 2019 and returned the ball to the 21. That led to a 6-yard touchdown run by Khalil Herbert, making it 19-10. Heavy rain flooded the area and drenched the new Bermuda grass installed this week.
Colts 20, Texans 20 – OT – TIE – Ryan, Colts rally but stall in OT for 20-20 tie with Texans
Matt Ryan rallied Indianapolis in the fourth quarter to force overtime against the Houston Texans in his Colts debut, but neither team could score on two overtime possessions each and the game ended in a 20-20 tie. The Texans led 20-3 entering the fourth quarter in coach Lovie Smith’s debut, but Ryan led three successive scoring drives, culminating with his 15-yard touchdown pass to Michael Pittman with 1:54 remaining. The Colts got within field goal range in overtime, but Rodrigo Blankenship missed a 42-yard try with 2 minutes left. Ryan threw for 352 yards with an interception and a lost fumble.

NFL – Lions lament another season-opening rally that falls short
The Detroit Lions began their 2021 season by rallying to turn a potential blowout into a close loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Detroit did much the same on Sunday, falling behind 38-21 to the Philadelphia Eagles before scoring two late touchdowns and losing 38-35. Coach Dan Campbell says his team can be encouraged by the fact it didn’t play well but only lost by three points. Two of Detroit’s biggest mistakes were personal fouls that extended Philadelphia touchdown drives. Quarterback Jared Goff struggled to connect with his receivers until the later stages of the game.
NFL – Bears penalized for using towel on soggy field before FG try
The Chicago Bears were hung out to dry by their own towel during their season opener against the San Francisco 49ers. Trenton Gill was whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct after the rookie holder used a towel to dry off a small area of the field ahead of a potential field goal try late in the second quarter. The 15-yard penalty moved Chicago out of Cairo Santos’ range, leading to Gill’s punt. It rained for much of the morning in Chicago, soaking Soldier Field. There were splashes of water almost every time a player went to the turf.

NCAAFB – AP Top 25: UGA reclaims No. 1
Georgia has reclaimed the top spot in The Associated Press college football poll and Oklahoma State, Kentucky and Arkansas moved into the top 10 after an upset-filled weekend. The defending national champion Bulldogs started the season at No. 3 in the AP Top 25. It took them two weeks to get back to where they spent most of last year. Georgia received 53 of 63 first-place votes. No. 2 Alabama, which needed a late field goal to hold off Texas, received nine first-place votes and No. 3 Ohio State got one. No. 4 Michigan and No. 5 Clemson held their places. Oklahoma moved up a spot to No. 6. And Southern California jumped three places to No. 7. Notre Dame tumbled out all the way from No. 8 to snap a streak of 80 straight poll appearances.
NCAAFB – Nebraska fires Frost; AD says 16-31 ‘not acceptable’
Nebraska has fired football coach Scott Frost after a 1-2 start to the season. The situation was so dire that athletic director Trev Alberts made the move only three weeks before Frost’s contract buyout would have been cut in half. The Cornhuskers lost 45-42 to Georgia Southern as a three-touchdown favorite at home on Saturday night. Frost was 16-31 three games into his fifth season. Associate head coach Mickey Joseph was named interim coach for the rest of the season. Alberts said there was no attempt to negotiate a lower buyout and that Frost would receive the $15 million owed to him.

Ramón Laureano hit a two-run homer and Vimael Machin hit a two-run double in the decisive fifth inning to back Cole Irvin’s second straight winning decision, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago White Sox 10-3 to snap a five-game losing streak. Defending AL Central champion Chicago had a four-game winning streak end with just the club’s third loss in 12 games as it chases first-place Cleveland in the division race down the September stretch.
Giants 4, Cubs 2 – Estrada, Flores homer in late innings, Giants beat Cubs 4-2
Thairo Estrada homered in the seventh, Wilmer Flores connected in the eighth and the San Francisco Giants held on to beat the Chicago Cubs 4-2. MLB – Chisox manager La Russa has pacemaker; return date uncertain
Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa says he’s on the mend after having a pacemaker inserted for his heart. He says he’s uncertain when he’ll return to manage the team. La Russa has been away from the White Sox since Aug. 30. He rejoined the club on Sunday in Oakland to celebrate the A’s retiring Dave Stewart’s No. 34 jersey. La Russa managed Stewart and was part of the tribute, but was not managing the White Sox in their game against the Athletics. La Russa shared specifics of the procedure with The Associated Press after discussing his health before Chicago’s series finale against the Athletics. He is grateful to have had what he considered a relatively “simple” heart issue. The Hall of Fame manager turns 78 next month.
MLB – George W. Bush part of MLB’s 9/11 anniversary tribute
Former President George W. Bush took part in a first ball ceremony in Texas, Aaron Judge put on special cleats at Yankee Stadium and the New York Mets wore first responder caps as Major League Baseball paused to remember the 9/11 attacks. There were moments of silence, remembrances and tributes at ballparks all across America on Sunday on the 21st anniversary of 9/11. Bush, who was president on the day of the attacks, was at Globe Life Field as the Rangers played Toronto. Bush famously delivered a perfect strike before Game 3 of the 2001 World Series at Yankee Stadium between the Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks weeks after New York City’s twin towers fell.

Aces 67, Sun 64 – Wilson’s double-double leads Aces to 67-64 win over Sun
A’ja Wilson had 24 points and 11 rebounds and the Las Vegas Aces defeated the Connecticut Sun 67-64 on Sunday in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals The Aces staved off a late run by the Sun, who erased a seven-point deficit with 1:24 left when Alyssa Thomas hit back-to-back shots to pull Connecticut within three. But DeWanna Bonner’s desperation 3-point attempt to tie the game fell short as time expired. Chelsea Gray finished with 21 points for Las Vegas, while Jackie Young chipped in 11 as the franchise won their first WNBA Finals game in franchise history. They had been swept in 2008 when the team was in San Antonio and lost in three games in 2020. Thomas led Connecticut with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Tennis – US Open – Carlos Alcaraz wins US Open for 1st Slam title, top ranking
Carlos Alcaraz has defeated Casper Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3 in the U.S. Open final to earn his first Grand Slam title at age 19 and become the youngest man to move up to No. 1 in the rankings. Alcaraz is a Spaniard who was appearing in his eighth major tournament and second at Flushing Meadows. He only briefly showed any signs of fatigue Sunday after having to get through three consecutive five-setters to reach the title match. Ruud is a 23-year-old from Norway who is now 0-2 in Slam finals. He was the runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the French Open in June.
Golf – PGA – Harrington wins in St. Louis for 3rd PGA Tour Champions win
Padraig Harrington has won for the third time this year on the PGA Tour Champions. The Irishman had seven birdies in his closing round of 68. He needed them to offset a few mistakes he made at the Ascension Charity Classic. Harrington won by one shot over Y.E. Yang. Steve Stricker started the final round one shot behind. He was tied with Harrington when both made birdie on the fifth hole. But Stricker made nothing but pars the rest of the way and finished third. Harrington has closed the gap on Steven Alker in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.
Golf – LPGA – Ewing’s 5 straight birdies leads to LPGA win in Cincinnati
Ally Ewing hadn’t finished in the top 10 all year on the LPGA Tour. She changed that by winning the Kroger Queen City Championship. Ewing made five straight birdies on the back nine. That carried her to a 65 and a one-shot victory over Xiyu Lin of China. Ewing now has one win in each of her last three seasons on the LPGA Tour. Lin is still looking for her first victory. She made Ewing work for it. Lin made an 18-foot birdie putt on the last hole for a 65. Ewing had to make par from short of the green.

Jonathan India hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the ninth inning, and the Cincinnati Reds rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Chicago was ahead 3-2 when Alejo Lopez’s liner off Mark Leiter Jr. slipped between rookie right fielder Seiya Suzuki and center fielder Rafael Ortega. The ball rolled to the wall for a triple, allowing Nick Senzel to score from first to tie it. Lopez trotted home on when India lined a single to left, his third hit of the game. Suzuki doubled and scored in the sixth and put Chicago in front with a solo shot in the eighth. Alexis Diaz got five outs for the win. Ian Gibaut worked around a hit in the ninth for his first save.

Cease (14-6) reached 206 strikeouts for the year, becoming the seventh White Sox pitcher with multiple 200-strikeout seasons. NFL – Bears say they’d need assistance to complete stadium complex
The Chicago Bears say they will need taxpayer assistance if they are going to construct an enclosed suburban stadium that could host Super Bowls, Final Fours and College Football Playoff games and anchor a surrounding entertainment and residential complex. Chairman George McCaskey said the team would not seek public funding to build the stadium itself if the Bears complete the purchase of a 326-acre site in Arlington Heights, Illinois, and decide to move from Soldier Field. But they would need help to complete the rest of a multibillion dollar project. The Bears envision restaurants, retail, office space, housing, a hotel, fitness center, new parks, ponds and open areas. McCaskey said the project could take more than 10 years to complete.

NCAAFB – Notre Dame coach Freeman ready for home debut vs Marshall
Irish coach Marcus Freeman is eager for No. 8 Notre Dame’s home opener on Saturday against Marshall. Yes, it gives the Fighting Irish a chance to rebound from last week’s season-opening loss at Ohio State. But it’s also a chance for Freeman to get his first career win in his home debut. The Thundering Herd come to town with one of the nation’s most prolific ground games. Marshall ran for more than 300 yards in last week’s rout of FCS foe Norfolk State. But they’ll face a much stiffer challenge against Notre Dame’s defense.
NCAAFB – CFP committee digs into feasibility of early expansion to 12
The College Football Playoff management committee gathered for 4 ½ hours at a hotel in the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. It was the conference commissioners first meeting since their bosses voted last week to expand the CFP from four to 12 teams. The goal is to sort through a myriad of issues and have a new format in place for the 2024 season. It’s unclear whether there is still time to accomplish that. First and foremost, they need to figure out where and when 11 playoff games can be played. Availability of venues and television time slots could ultimately determine whether early expansion is possible.
Tennis – US Open – Swiatek, Jabeur will meet in 1st US Open final for both
Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur will face each other in the U.S. Open women’s final. Tunisia’s Jabeur reached her second consecutive Grand Slam title match by beating Caroline Garcia 6-1, 6-3 at Flushing Meadows on Thursday night. The No. 5-seeded Jabeur was the runner-up at Wimbledon in July. She took full advantage of a shaky performance by first-time major semifinalist Garcia. The No. 1-ranked Swiatek grabbed the last four games to eliminate No. 6 Aryna Sabalenka 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the other semifinal. Poland’s Swiatek already owns two trophies from the French Open’s red clay but never had been past the fourth round on New York’s hard courts.
Tennis – US Open – Tiafoe offers hope for present and future of US men’s tennis
Frances Tiafoe calls his run to the U.S. Open semifinals ‘a Cinderella story.’ He is a 24-year-old from Maryland who took up tennis because his father was a janitor at a junior training center, a player who never won a match past the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament until now, who owns one career ATP title and a sub-.500 career record, and whose ranking ranged from 24 to 74 over the past two seasons. Tiafoe’s tale also is a significant step forward for American men’s tennis and could help grow the sport in the future, too. Tiafoe is the first man from the U.S. to reach the semifinals at Flushing Meadows in 16 years. And he could become the first Black man from the U.S. in a major final since MaliVai Washington was the runner-up at Wimbledon in more than a quarter-century ago.
Sports events in Britain called off following death of queen
Several sporting events in Britain have been called off as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96. Organizers of the BMW PGA Championship golf event reacted to the announcement of the queen’s death by immediately suspending play with many players still out on the course at Wentworth. Friday’s play in the second test between England and South Africa at the Oval will not take place and horse racing meetings in Britain were suspended on Thursday night and Friday. Fridays games in the English Football League will not take place.
Miller, Lamoureux twins elected to US Hockey Hall of Fame
Longtime NHL and former Michigan State goaltender Ryan Miller and Olympic gold medal-winning women’s hockey stars Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson and Monique Lamoureux-Morando headline the 2022 class of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. Three-time Paralympic gold medal-winning sled hockey goalie Steve Cash and late USA Hockey executive Jim Johannson were also elected. Miller backstopped the U.S. to the final of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and has the most NHL victories of any American-born goalie. The Lamoureux twins helped the U.S. beat Canada for gold at the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang with Lamoureux-Davidson scoring the shootout winner. Johannson was general manager of the men’s team that year before dying unexpectedly at age 53 a few weeks before the start of the tournament.
NASCAR – Kyle Busch still seeking on-track success, job for 2023
It didn’t seem much could still go wrong this year for Kyle Busch until his engine blew with 22 laps remaining in NASCAR’s opening playoff race. Busch had dominated at Darlington Raceway and led a race-high 155 laps for what should have been a much needed victory. He’s had a crummy season and the 10-race playoff stretch is probably the final days of his career with Joe Gibbs Racing. Instead of a victory that would have automatically advanced him into the second round, Busch finished 30th and remained 11th in the playoff standings. Even worse, he has no idea when he’ll have a job secured for 2023.

Tigers 5, Angels 4 – Ohtani, Trout homer again, but Tigers rally past Angels 5-4
Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout homered in the same game for the eighth time this season during the Los Angeles Angels’ 5-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Rookies Kerry Carpenter and Ryan Kreidler hit back-to-back homers in the ninth inning for Detroit off Jose Quijada. Eric Haase went 5 for 5 with a homer and two doubles in the majors’ 12th five-hit game of the season, and former No. 1 overall draft pick Spencer Torkelson hit his first homer since July 3. Trout homered in the fifth and Ohtani homered in the seventh, but the Angels’ bullpen blew the win.
White Sox 9, Mariners 6 – White Sox take advantage of Mariners’ miscues for 9-6 win
Eloy Jiménez drove in three runs with a homer and double, Chicago took advantage of three errors, and the White Sox rallied to beat the Seattle Mariners 9-6. The White Sox took two of three in the series and stayed on the heels of Cleveland and Minnesota in the crowded AL Central race. It looked early like it would be a series loss for the White Sox as Seattle starter Luis Castillo tied an American League record by striking out the first seven batters to start the game. But Castillo gave up Jiménez’s homer and couldn’t get through the sixth inning.
Reds 7, Cubs 1 – Aquino hits 2 home runs, Reds beat Cubs 7-1
Aristides Aquino hit two more home runs against the Cubs and helped the Cincinnati Reds pull away from Chicago 7-1. Mike Minor, pitching at Wrigley Field for the first time since 2014 with Atlanta, gave up 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings but just one run. The 34-year-old lefty is 3-0 in his last four starts after losing a career-worst eight straight decisions. The Cubs hit into three double plays and lost for the fourth time in five games. Aquino has hit 12 homers in 84 career at-bats against the Cubs.

MLB – Major League Baseball Players Association joins AFL-CIO
The Major League Baseball Players Association is joining the AFL-CIO. Executive director Tony Clark made the announcement alongside AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler at the National Press Club in Washington. The move comes as the MLBPA is attempting to unionize minor leaguers and in the aftermath of a nearly 100-day lockout that delayed the start of the season. Shuler called it an incredible moment for the labor movement. Clark says baseball players want to strengthen their organization by supporting minor leaguers and becoming part of the AFL-CIO.

NFL – Fields hopes offseason work leads to jump for him, Bears
Quarterback Justin Fields is embracing his leadership role with the Chicago Bears. And he hopes the work he and his teammates put in during the offseason leads to a big payoff for a team that struggled last season. The Bears host San Francisco in the season opener this week and all eyes will be on Fields. He comes into his second season trying to convince new general manager Ryan Poles and first-year coach Matt Eberflus he is the right person to solidify a position that has haunted the team for a big part of their history. A strong showing against a dominant defense that helped lead San Francisco to the NFC championship game last season would be a good way to start.
NFL – Soldier Field gets new grass for Bears’ opener against 49ers
The Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers will be playing on new turf when they open the season at Soldier Field. Bermuda grass was installed this week at the lakefront stadium instead of the stadium’s traditional Kentucky bluegrass. The Bears hope that leads to fewer issues with a surface that has long been a source of frustration for their own players and coaches as well as opponents. Coach Matt Eberflus had input in the switch and welcomes the change.

Seattle forward Breanna Stewart was second, garnering 23 first-place votes and finishing 32 points behind Wilson, who had 478 points. Wilson also won the award in 2020 and is the seventh player to win the award more than once. The award was announced one day after Wilson helped the Aces reach the WNBA Finals by knocking out Stewart and the Storm. Wilson also earned Defensive Player of the Year honors this year.
NCAAFB – No. 14 Michigan State aiming for consistency against Akron
No. 14 Michigan State, missing two key players on defense, is aiming for consistency against Akron after an uneven, season-opening win over Western Michigan. Spartans coach Mel Tucker said his team is super motivated and has a lot to prove on the field Saturday. The Zips are coming off an overtime victory over St. Francis of Pennsylvania. They are looking to start out 2-0 for the first time since 2018, which is the last time they beat a Power Five team at Northwestern. This is the first matchup between the schools since 1914.
NCAAFB – Beat-up Buchner ready to show Irish what he learned in loss
Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner started with a flurry last weekend. Then he followed the script. The sophomore impressed first-year coach Marcus Freeman with a poised performance in a season-opening 21-10 loss at No. 2 Ohio State. On Saturday, in a less daunting matchup against Marshall, Buchner will get to show everyone what he learned from his first big test. And Freeman believes big things are on the horizon for the former prep star from Southern California.
Tennis – US Open – Tiafoe 1st US man in US Open semifinals since Roddick in ’06
Frances Tiafoe has become the first American man to reach the U.S. Open semifinals since 2006. The 24-year-old Tiafoe beat Andrey Rublev 7-6 (3), 7-6 (0), 6-4 on Wednesday while being backed by a boisterous partisan crowd in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Tiafoe is seeded No. 22 and his first career semifinal at any Grand Slam tournament will come Friday against No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz or No. 11 Jannik Sinner. Tiafoe played aggressive tennis and used 18 aces along with strong net play to oust No. 9 Rublev, a Russian who dropped to 0-6 in major quarterfinals. No. 1 Iga Swiatek and No. 6 Aryna Sabalenka reached the women’s semifinals.
NHL – Canadiens sign Dach to 4-year, $13.45 million deal
Kirby Dach has agreed to a four-year, $13.45 million contract with the Montreal Canadiens. The 21-year-old center, who was a restricted free agent, had 26 points (nine goals, 17 assists) in 70 games with the Chicago Blackhawks last season. In a corresponding move to get under the NHL’s offseason salary cap, Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes told reporters star goaltender Carey Price would be put on long-term injured reserve. The 35-year-old played just five games last season because of a knee injury after leading Montreal to a berth in the 2021 Stanley Cup Final.
NASCAR – NASCAR calls car fires ‘unacceptable’ after Harvick inferno
NASCAR is investigating a spate of car fires that left one championship contender fuming after his Ford erupted into an inferno during the opening playoff race. Kevin Harvick lashed out at NASCAR and the new Next Gen car after it inexplicably caught fire in the playoff opener at Darlington Raceway. The car fire dropped Harvick to last in the 16-driver playoff field. Headed into Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway, NASCAR has ordered some safety changes as it attempts to address the fires. A NASCAR official said “it’s unacceptable for the cars to catch on fire."

Taylor Ward scored the tying run moments earlier on a throwing error to the plate by shortstop Javier Baez, who had singled home Kody Clemens with the Tigers’ go-ahead run in the top of the 10th. MLB – MLB asked to voluntarily accept minor league union
The Major League Baseball Players Association is asking MLB management to voluntarily accept the union as the bargaining agent for minor leaguers. The union’s deputy executive director sent a letter to MLB claiming a majority of minor leaguers signed authorization cards. The MLBPA launched the minor league unionization drive on Aug. 28. Players with minor league contracts earn as little as $400 weekly during the six-month season. They would become their own bargaining unit within the MLBPA.

The Aces won the best-of-five series 3-1, all the games tense, pressure-packed and filled with spectacular shot-making. The Aces ended up making more, most notably Gray, who made five of six shots down the stretch and scored 12 of the final 20 points for the Aces. It will be the third Finals appearance in franchise history for Las Vegas.
NCAAFB – Georgia moves up to No. 2, passing Ohio State
Georgia moved up to No. 2 in the first Associated Press college football poll of the regular season. The Bulldogs passed Ohio State after the defending national champions dominated their opener. Alabama remained No. 1 in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank, receiving 44 of 63 first-place votes. The Bulldogs narrowed the gap on the Crimson Tide after beating Oregon 49-3. Georgia received 17 first-place votes. Ohio State slipped to No. 3 and received two first-place votes. Michigan moved up four spots to No. 4. Clemson dropped one place to No. 5. Florida debuted at No. 12 after its thrilling victory at home against Utah. The Utes slipped six spots to No. 13 after the loss. Oregon’s loss to Georgia sent the Ducks all the way out of the rankings.
NCAAFB – LSU addressing a slew of miscues after Kelly’s debut
LSU has emerged from Brian Kelly’s coaching debut trying to address a slew of miscues which proved costly in a narrow loss to Florida State. Kelly says receiver Kayshon Boutte is the least of his offense’s concerns despite making just two catches for 20 yards without scoring. He says Boutte has high standards and was unhappy during the game. But Kelly asserts Boutte will have “great games” this season. Kelly cites blocking and special teams among areas needing improvement after LSU struggled to run the ball, muffed two punts and had two kicks blocked. But Kelly says LSU also showed grit and character while nearly erasing a late two-touchdown deficit. The Tigers host Southern on Saturday.
NCAAFB – Big Ten – Big Ten punters just keep turning up from down under
Half of the Big Ten’s 14 teams this season have a punter produced by Prokick Australia. The development academy down under has been supplying major college football programs with game-ready special teamers at a remarkable rate. Purdue’s Jack Ansell, Minnesota’s Mark Crawford, Rutgers’ Adam Korsak, Ohio State’s Jesse Mirco, Illinois’ Hugh Robertson and Iowa’s Tory Taylor are all from Australia. Indiana’s James Evans is a New Zealander. Prokick has landed full scholarships for 190 players and counting. It was founded in 2007 by Nathan Chapman after a brief experience in the NFL.
NFL – Bears release renderings for enclosed suburban stadium
The Chicago Bears plan to build an enclosed suburban stadium that could host Super Bowls, College Football Playoff games and Final Fours. The Bears released conceptual illustrations of the proposed stadium and entertainment complex that would be built on the site of a former horse racing track in Arlington Heights, Illinois. The Bears say the project could include restaurants, office space, a hotel, fitness center, new parks and open areas. They also say they would seek no public funding for the stadium if the sale of the property is completed and if they decide to move there. But they would seek taxpayer assistance for the rest of the project.
NFL – NFL features record-tying 10 new head coaches
There will be a new look on the sideline in Week 1 of the NFL season with a record-tying 10 new head coaches across the league. The overhaul of nearly one-third of the league matches the previous high last reached 2006. The new crop includes five retreads looking to bounce back after getting fired from their last head-coaching job and five first-time coaches. They take over varying situations with Tampa Bay’s Todd Bowles and Las Vegas’ Josh McDaniels taking over 2021 playoff teams in their second chances, while others like Chicago’s Matt Eberflus and Brian Daboll of the Giants in rebuilding situations.
Golf – PGA/LIV – Horschel, Rahm unhappy at LIV golfers playing at Wentworth
Golfers from the Saudi-backed breakaway series have faced strong criticism for choosing to play the BMW PGA Championship on the European tour this week. The main targets of the criticism were those LIV Golf players who are in the field at Wentworth because of their ranking in the top 60 and are seemingly chasing ranking points not currently available on the breakaway tour. Billy Horschel is the defending champion from the United States and called the players in question “hypocrites.” Jon Rahm accused them of displaying double standards.
Tennis – US Open – Khachanov stops Kyrgios in 5 sets; faces Ruud in semifinals
Karen Khachanov has advanced to the first Grand Slam semifinal of his career by edging Nick Kyrgios 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-4 at the U.S. Open. Kyrgios could not quite follow up his victory over defending champion Daniil Medvedev. The match began Tuesday night and concluded after midnight on Wednesday at a rowdy Arthur Ashe Stadium. The No. 27-seeded Khachanov will face No. 5 Casper Ruud on Friday for a berth in the championship match.
Tennis – US Open – Garcia, 28, tops Gauff, 18, at US Open for 1st Slam semi
Caroline Garcia has beaten 18-year-old American Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-4 at the U.S. Open to reach her first Grand Slam semifinal at age 28. The 17th-seeded Garcia had lost both of her two previous matches against the 12th-seeded Gauff but was the better player in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday night. The Frenchwoman stretched her winning streak to 13 matches and solidified her status as someone playing as well as anyone in women’s tennis at the moment. Garcia has not dropped a set at Flushing Meadows this year. She finished last year ranked 74th but is projected to rise into the top 10 next week. Garcia will face Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur next.
USA Soccer – U.S. Soccer, players formally sign equal pay agreements
Representatives for the men’s and women’s U.S. national teams signed their historic collective bargaining agreements with U.S. Soccer, formally closing a long and acrimonious fight over equal pay. The federation announced in May that it had struck separate agreements with the players’ unions on contracts that run through 2028. A signing ceremony was held following the women’s friendly match against Nigeria at Audi Field in Washington D.C., with U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh among those on hand. The new contracts include identical pay structures for appearances and tournament victories, revenue sharing and equitable distribution of World Cup prize money.
Olympics – Tokyo Olympics sponsorship scandal widens with more arrests
Bribery allegations against a former Tokyo Olympics organizing committee member are widening as Japanese prosecutors “re-arrested” Haruyuki Takahashi in a case involving suspected payments from a publisher which became a sponsor for the Games. The latest allegations center on 76 million yen — about $540,000 — Takahashi received from publishing company Kadokawa, according to Tokyo District prosecutors. Two Kadokawa officials have been arrested for allegedly paying bribes. Takahashi has been in detention since he was arrested last month for receiving bribes from clothing manufacturer Aoki Holdings. He was also formally charged Tuesday with receiving bribes from Aoki. Three Aoki officials were also charged.

Angels 10, Tigers 0 – Ohtani, Trout power Angels to 10-0 win over Tigers
Shohei Ohtani had his sixth multi-homer game of the season, Mike Trout also went deep and José Suarez threw three-hit ball over seven innings as the Los Angeles Angels routed the skidding Detroit Tigers 10-0. Luis Rengifo had a career-high four hits and drove in a run for the Angels, who had their second-biggest offensive performance of the season with 16 hits. It is the seventh time this season Ohtani and Trout have homered in the same game. Trout’s solo shot to left field in the fifth off Tyler Alexander was his 30th homer of the season, marking the seventh time in his 12-year career he has reached that plateau.
White Sox 3, Mariners 2 – Lynn dominates as White Sox snap M’s streak with 3-2 win
Lance Lynn mowed through Seattle striking out a season-high 11, Elvis Andrus hit a two-run home run, and the Chicago White Sox snapped the Mariners’ seven-game win streak with a 3-2 win. Lynn retired the final 17 batters he faced in a dominant outing against a Seattle lineup that looked sleepy following a long Sunday in Cleveland and an early-morning arrival back in the Pacific Northwest. Lynn didn’t allow a base runner after Abraham Toro’s bloop RBI single in the second inning that right fielder Andrew Vaughn appeared to lose briefly in the sun. The 11 strikeouts were one off his career high. Seattle starter Marco Gonzales threw seven strong innings but allowed two home runs.

NCAAFB – No. 15 Michigan State loses Snow for season, Henderson indefinitely
Michigan State linebacker Darius Snow is out for the season and safety Xavier Henderson will be sidelined indefinitely after both were injured when the 15th-ranked Spartans beat Western Michigan in their season opener. Coach Mel Tucker made the announcements on Monday. Snow and Henderson had their right legs wrapped with protective braces Saturday night when Michigan State beat the Broncos 35-13. Snow and Henderson were two of the team’s top players on defense and losing them will hurt its chances of improving what the worst FBS team against the pass last season. The Spartans host Akron on Saturday.
NCAAFB – Harbaugh hopes players get a revenue share from 12-team CFP
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh hopes players get a cut of the revenue generated by an expanded College Football Playoff. The plan to expand the CFP from four teams was approved Friday, and the new-look tournament will begin as soon as 2024 and as late as 2026. The 11 university leaders who make up CFP’s Board of Managers approved the original 12-team proposal in a unanimous vote that was necessary to pursue early expansion. Six of the highest-ranked conference champions and six at-large, selection-committee selections will earn a spot in the new playoff format.
Tennis – US Open – Tiafoe ends Nadal’s 22-match Slam streak in US Open 4th Rd
Frances Tiafoe has ended Rafael Nadal’s 22-match winning streak at Grand Slam tournaments by beating the 22-time major champion 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the U.S. Open’s fourth round. Tiafoe is a 24-year-old from Maryland who is seeded 22nd at Flushing Meadows and reached the second major quarterfinal of his career. He is the youngest American man to get that far at the U.S. Open since Andy Roddick in 2006. This surprise came a day after Nick Kyrgios eliminated No. 1 seed and defending champion Daniil Medvedev. That makes this the first U.S. Open without either of the top two seeded men reaching the quarterfinals since 2000.
Tennis – US Open – No. 3 Alcaraz beats Cilic in 5-set match | US Open updates
It’s going to be a U.S. Open quarterfinals matchup of two rising stars when third-seeded Carlos Alcaraz plays No. 11-seed Jannik Sinner. The 19-year-old Alcaraz was the last to advance in one of the longest nights ever at the Open with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over 2014 U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Alcaraz dropped to his knees when he won the grueling match that lasted nearly four hours and ended around 2:25 a.m. Alcaraz was already the youngest man to reach the fourth round in consecutive U.S. Open since Pete Sampras in 1989 and ’90.
NFL – Bears’ Eberflus appreciates moment with opener at hand
Matt Eberflus can appreciate the moment. He’s a first-time head coach trying to turn around a founding NFL franchise, and the next big step comes this week when the Chicago Bears host the San Francisco 49ers in the season opener. Eberflus says it’s “always special when you do something for the first time” and is “part of your story that you’re writing.” The Bears hired general manager Ryan Poles and Eberflus to replace the fired Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy after going 6-11 and missing the playoffs for the ninth time in 11 years.
NFL – NFL returning to London for international combine in October
The NFL is holding an international combine in London for the second consecutive year. Forty-four athletes will be selected to participate in the combine in front of NFL evaluators at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Oct. 3-4. Instead of team scouts, the NFL that evaluates the players and selects a handful to train in the United States for three months, after which final choices are made to allocate players to NFL teams for the 2023 season. And then, they still need to win a spot on the team roster. It will be the fourth international combine after one in Australia in 2018, another in Germany in 2019 and London last year.
NASCAR – NASCAR’s wild regular season rolls over into playoffs
If NASCAR’s playoff opener at Darlington Raceway was any indication, the postseason is going to be a wild one. Erik Jones became the first non-playoff driver to win NASCAR’s opening playoff race. Several top seeds expected to compete like Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch were out of contention at the end. Elliott was the top playoff seed and hit the wall early. Harvick’s car caught fire and he went from ninth in points to 16th on the brink of elimination. Defending series champ Larson was several laps down before finishing 12th.
