Yankees 4, Tigers 2 – Cole gets career-low 5 outs, pen leads Yanks over Tigers 4-2
Gerrit Cole lasted a career-low 1 2/3 innings, and Clarke Schmidt combined with four relievers to pitch three-hit shutout ball and lead the New York Yankees over the Detroit Tigers 4-2 in a series opener. Cole matched his career high of five walks and allowed two runs and one hit, throwing just 37 of 68 pitches for strikes. Starting the third season of a $324 million, nine-year contract, the 31-year-old right-hander has a 6.35 ERA in three starts and has pitched into the sixth inning just once. Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera singled off Cole leading off the second, his 2,996th hit.

White Sox at Guardians, PPD – White Sox, Guardians postponed again, doubleheader Wednesday
For the second straight day, the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians have been postponed by inclement weather and unplayable conditions. The game will be made up as part of a traditional doubleheader Wednesday, starting at 2:10 p.m. Monday’s postponement will be played as part of a doubleheader on July 12.

Rays 6, Cubs 5 – Franco homers in Wrigley debut, Rays beat Cubs 6-5
Wander Franco hit his first homer of the season, a two-run drive to left-center in the third inning, and the Tampa Bay Rays held on to beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5. Cubs rookie Seiya Suzuki drew three walks but his nine-game hitting streak came to an end. That left him tied with Akinori Iwamura for the longest hitting streak by a Japanese-born player to start a career. Playing at Wrigley Field for the first time, Franco finished 3-for-5, including the homer that put the Rays ahead 3-0. Tampa Bay reliever Josh Fleming got the win. Andrew Kittredge retired the final 6 batters for his 2nd save.

Jakub Vrana had two goals, including the tiebreaking score in the third period, to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Red Wings beat Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy for the first time in 14 career games. Lucas Raymond and Oskar Sundqvist also scored for Detroit. Thomas Greiss stopped 38 shots. Lightning captain Steven Stamkos finished with three assists. He tied Marty St. Louis for the franchise record for career points at 953. Ross Colton scored twice and Nikita Kucherov added his 19th of the season for Tampa Bay. Vasilevskiy finished with 27 saves.

NFL – Tirico, Collinsworth and Stark to do ‘Sunday Night Football’
NBC Sports revealed its new “Sunday Night Football” announcing team with analyst Cris Collinsworth returning and being joined by Mike Tirico in the booth and Melissa Stark on the sidelines. The network said the crew will work for the first time at the Hall of Fame game on Aug. 4 between Jacksonville and Las Vegas. Tirico, who has been with NBC since 2016, is replacing Al Michaels calling play by play. Michaels was hired by Amazon to handle its Thursday night games. Stark replaces Michele Tafoya. Collinsworth is returning for a 14th season on Sunday night.

NFL – Justin Fields and the Bears are learning the Eberflus way
Since Matt Eberflus took over as coach of the Chicago Bears, second-year quarterback Justin Fields and his teammates are adjusting to a new way of doing things. Working at a three-day minicamp on Tuesday, Fields is changing his footwork and getting the ball out faster under new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. Eberflus and defensive assistants have taken the Bears back to a 4-3 defensive approach after the team played a 3-4 front for seven seasons. Defensive players also are getting used to playing without veteran linebacker Khalil Mack, who was traded.

NCAAFB – With expansion on hold, College Football Playoff settles in
As college football tries to navigate unprecedented upheaval, the status quo holds with the College Football Playoff that crowns its national champion. CFP executive director Bill Hancock says he does not believe major changes are coming any time soon after a proposal to expand to a 12-team playoff was abandoned in February. He expects the playoff will keep its four-team format through the end of its current contract.

NCAAWBKB – NCAA sanctions Ohio State women’s hoops, 2 other programs
Ohio State’s athletics department has been given four years probation and hit with other sanctions as a result of self-reported recruiting and policy violations in three women’s sports, including basketball. The other violations, as outlined in a report issued by the NCAA’s Division I Committee on Infractions, were in the women’s fencing and golf programs between 2015 and 2019. The university had self-reported the violations, and in December 2020 imposed a postseason ban for all three sports in 2020-21.

Tennis – 5-time Grand Slam champ Maria Sharapova says she is pregnant
Maria Sharapova says she is pregnant. The five-time Grand Slam tennis champion retired from the sport in February 2020. She delivered the pregnancy news via a social media post on Tuesday — her 35th birthday. She announced her engagement to Alexander Gilkes in December 2020.

MILB – Minor league game time cut 20 minutes with pitch clocks
Minor league games averaged 2 hours, 39 minutes in the first three days with a pitch clock, down 20 minutes from the prior average this season. Major League Baseball says the 132 games with a clock averaged 5.11 runs and 15.9 hits, close to the average of 5.13 runs and 16.1 hits for the 335 games without a clock. Time between pitches during a plate appearance was cut from 21.5 seconds to 19.7 seconds, and time between batters was lowered from 43 seconds to 39.7.

Cubs 4, Rays 2 – Suzuki extends hitting streak to 9, Cubs beat cold Rays 4-2
Seiya Suzuki extended his hitting streak to nine games, tying Akinori Iwamura for the longest by a Japanese-born player at the start of a major league career, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 on a cold night. Suzuki singled to left leading off the fourth inning, matching the mark that Iwamura set with the Rays in 2007 and tying Andy Pafko’s record for a Cubs player at the start of his career, set in 1943. Suzuki was thrown out by left fielder Randy Arozarena trying to stretch his hit to a double.

White Sox at Guardians, PPD – White Sox-Guardians postponed by inclement weather
The game between the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians scheduled for Monday night was called about five hours before the scheduled 6:10 p.m. first pitch after rain and snow showers fell most of the day and temps dropped into the 30s. The teams will play a split doubleheader on July 12.

MLB – Former Cubs ace Jake Arrieta says he’s retiring
Jake Arrieta, a key pitcher on the Chicago Cubs’ 2016 World Series championship team, has decided to retire. Arrieta made the announcement during a Barstool Sports podcast. The 36-year-old Arrieta went 5-14 with a 7.39 ERA in 24 starts for the Cubs and San Diego Padres last season. He finishes his career with a 115-93 record and 3.98 ERA in 285 games, including 279 starts, over 12 years in the majors. Arrieta won the NL Cy Young Award with Chicago in 2015 and helped the Cubs win the 2016 World Series for their first championship since 1908.

NBA – Healthy Lopez gives Bucks major size advantage against Bulls
The silver lining to the back injury that sidelined Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez for most of the season is that it made him fresher for the playoffs. The 7-footer is healthy now and eager to help the Bucks defend their title. He’s already shown he can cause problems on both ends of the floor for the Chicago Bulls, the Bucks’ first-round opponent. Lopez scored 18 points and played a season-high 32 minutes in Sunday’s 93-86 Game 1 victory. He also was a big part of a defense that held Chicago to the lowest point total of any Bucks opponent all season.

NCAAHKY – Hobey Baker winner gets 6-month ban for prohibited substance
Minnesota State goaltender and Hobey Baker Award winner Dryden McKay has been given a six-month ban for an anti-doping violation after leading the Mavericks to the Frozen Four national championship game. The suspension was announced Monday by the United States Anti-Doping Agency. McKay was tested by the agency as an alternate for Team USA’s Olympic hockey roster. A supplement he took to help protect him from COVID-19 was the source of the positive test. Minnesota State said in a statement that McKay had a mandatory provisional suspension that was lifted following a hearing in early February. McKay said in a social media post that he accepted the suspension so that he can be ready for professional hockey in the fall.

Johnny Gaudreau, Dillon Dube and Blake Coleman scored in the first period, and the Calgary Flames beat the lowly Chicago Blackhawks 5-2. Jacob Markstrom made 22 saves as playoff-bound Calgary won for the seventh time in eight games. Gaudreau and Oliver Kylington tacked on long empty-netters for the Pacific Division leaders in the final 1:32. Chicago lost for the 10th time in 11 games. Tyler Johnson and Alec Regula scored, and Kevin Lankinen made 30 stops.

NHL – Red Wings’ Larkin has core muscle surgery, out 8-10 weeks
Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin has undergone core muscle surgery, ending his second season as the team’s captain earlier than hoped. The Red Wings say his recovery is expected to last eight to 10 weeks. The 25-year-old Larkin leads the Red Wings with 31 goals and 69 points in 71 games. Detroit has not earned a spot in the playoffs since 2016 when Larkin was a rookie and its run of 25 straight postseasons ended. Larkin has 358 career points over seven seasons with the Red Wings. Detroit drafted him No. 15 overall in 2014 draft.

NFL – Browns speak to NFL on ‘tanking’ claims made by former coach
The Cleveland Browns have spoken to an NFL investigator looking into claims by former coach Hue Jackson, who said the team intentionally lost games in 2016 and 2017.  Jackson, now coaching at Grambling State, indicated in a series of posts on social media that the Browns paid him bonuses incentivizing him to lose. Jackson later softened those claims. The Browns went 1-15 in 2016 and 0-16 in 2017 under Jackson. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed the league engaged former SEC chair Mary Jo White to look into Jackson’s allegations. The team said it welcomed the chance to address Jackson’s claims.

NFL – Commanders send letter to FTC denying financial impropriety
The NFL’s Washington Commanders denied several allegations of financial impropriety in a letter written to the Federal Trade Commission. The 105-page letter including testimony, emails and other documents comes as a response to the U.S. House Oversight and Reform Committee asking the FTC to look into the team’s business practices. The letter signed by Jordan W. Siev from the law firm Reed Smith denies the Commanders at any point withheld ticket revenue from visiting teams and the league or kept fans from getting refundable ticket deposits back. The letter also takes aim at the motives of former VP of sales and customer service Jason Friedman, whose testimony against the team framed the committee’s recommendation.

Running – Olympic champ Jepchirchir wins 50th women’s Boston Marathon
Reigning Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Boston Marathon women’s division by winning a see-saw sprint down Boylston Street. Evans Chebet of Kenya won the men’s division as the race returned to its traditional Patriots’ Day spot in the schedule for the first time since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. More than 28,000 runners returned to the streets from Hopkinton to Copley Square six months after a smaller and socially distanced event that was the only fall race in its 126-year history.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 27 points and 16 rebounds and the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks recovered after blowing a 16-point lead to beat the Chicago Bulls 93-86 in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series Sunday. Jrue Holiday sank a go-ahead 3-pointer with 5:03 left as part of an 8-0 run that gave the Bucks an 85-78 edge. The Bulls got the margin down to one but could never regain the lead. Zach LaVine missed a potential tying 3-pointer from nearly 30 feet away with 29.7 seconds left.  Nicola Vucevic had 24 points to lead Chicago.  Game 2 is Wednesday.

Randy Arozarena doubled twice and finished with three hits as the Tampa Bay Rays topped the Chicago White Sox 9-3 to stop a four-game slide. Manuel Margot also had three hits for the Rays, including a double. Kevin Kiermaier and Francisco Mejia each drove in two runs. Wander Franco added an RBI double as Tampa Bay pulled away with a four-run eighth inning. Margot, Kiermaier and Yandy Diaz had RBIs in a four-run first when the Rays jumped on shaky Chicago starter Vince Velasquez without hitting the ball hard.

Cubs 6, Rockies 4 – Suzuki homers to extend hot start, Cubs beat Rockies 6-4
Seiya Suzuki hit his fourth home run, extending an impressive start to his major league career, and the Chicago Cubs defeated the Colorado Rockies 6-4. Willson Contreras also went deep for the Cubs. Nick Madrigal had three hits and Nico Hoerner drove in two runs. Suzuki is batting .400 and has hit safely in eight straight games with an at-bat. The outfielder from Japan has reached base in all nine games to begin his Cubs career. Rowan Wick won in relief and David Robertson earned his third save. Ryan McMahon homered for the Rockies. The Cubs roughed up Colorado starter Austin Gomber for five runs — four earned — in 4 1/3 innings.

Panthers 6, Red Wings 1 – Panthers’ win streak reaches 10 games with 6-1 rout of Wings
Anton Lundell scored twice and the Florida Panthers extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 6-1 rout of the Detroit Red Wings. Anthony Duclair, Sam Reinhart, Maxim Mamin and Gustav Forsling also scored for the Panthers, who tied a franchise mark with their 22nd road win of the season. Spencer Knight made 33 saves. Pius Suter scored and Alex Nedeljkovic had 33 saves for the Red Wings, who have allowed six or more goals for the 14th time this season.

NHL – Blackhawk player’s celebrity golden retriever dies
Chicago Blackhawks center Dylan Strome’s golden retriever that became a celebrity in its own right — complete with more than 20,000 Instagram followers — has died. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that 2-year-old Wrigley died on Friday at the the age of two years old after developing sepsis following surgery. Strome credits Wrigley for helping him and his family get through the quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic and the ups and downs of his hockey career.

NASCAR – Kyle Busch steals Bristol win as Reddick and Briscoe crash
Kyle Busch slipped past the spinning cars of Tyler Reddick and Chase Briscoe to steal his first Cup win of the season Sunday night on slick, wet, dirt-covered Bristol Motor Speedway. Reddick was chasing the first Cup win of his career but lapped traffic allowed Briscoe to close in on Reddick. Briscoe timed his move for the win for the third turn of the final lap, when Briscoe tried to slide his way past Reddick on the inside. The move backfired and both cars spun out of control and Busch, who was running third, simply skirted through for his first win.

Golf – PGA – Spieth wins in SC
Jordan Spieth used a marvelous approach shot on the first playoff hole to beat Patrick Cantlay and win the PGA’s RBC Heritage. Spieth hit a 56-foot shot from a greenside bunker to 7 inches of the cup. He won his 13th PGA Tour title and second straight on Easter Sunday after taking the Valero Texas Open a year ago to end a four-year drought. Playing four groups ahead of Cantlay, Spieth birdied Harbour Town’s par-4 18th lighthouse hole in regulation, holing a 10-footer for a 5-under 66 and 13-under 271 total.

NCAAMBKB – Emoni Bates leaving Memphis for transfer portal after 1 year
Emoni Bates has announced he’s entering the transfer portal after one season at Memphis. Bates announced his decision Saturday on his Instagram account. He thanked Memphis coach Penny Hardaway and the rest of his coaching staff for giving him a chance to be a Tiger. The 6-foot-9 forward has been called a generational talent and projected as the No. 1 overall pick when he becomes eligible for the NBA draft after he turns 19 in 2023. He reclassified to the class of 2021 last August and joined former AAU teammate Jalen Duren at Memphis.  Bates went to high school at Lincoln High School in Ypsilanti before attending Ypsilanti Prep his senior year.

Running – Perfect spring weather greets Boston Marathon’s April return
The Boston Marathon is back in the spring, where it belongs. Six months after the only fall race in the event’s 125-year history, the world’s most prestigious marathon returns to its traditional Patriots’ Day slot in the calendar. More than 28,000 runners have signed up for Monday’s 26.2-mile slog. Among them are 11 former champions and what could be the fastest field ever. The forecast calls for temperatures in the 50s with no rain, and only the possibility of a slight headwind late in the afternoon for the stragglers.

USA Football takes a major step in coaching accreditation
USA Football has taken another major step in coaching accreditation on the youth level, having its educational programs certified by the U.S. Center for Coaching Excellence. The governing body for the sport in this country joins track and field as the only such organizations with USCCE accreditation. Since 2013, more than 900,000 USA Football youth coaching certifications have been completed. That figure includes youth coaches who have completed the certification more than once during the past 10 years. USA Football, a member of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, trains and certifies more tackle and flag football coaches than any organization in the United States.

Victor Reyes and Austin Meadows had RBI singles in the seventh inning, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2. With the game tied 2-2, pinch-hitter Eric Haase hit the first of three straight two-out singles off reliever Jake Brentz, followed by Reyes and Meadows. Miguel Cabrera had three of the Tigers’ nine hits, leaving him six shy of 3,000 for his career. All of Detroit’s hits were singles. Joe Jimenez pitched a scoreless sixth, one of four Tigers relievers who combined to allow only one walk among the final 13 Kansas City batters. Gregory Soto worked the ninth for his second save.

Mariners 5, White Sox 1 – Popups become adventures as Mariners beat White Sox 5-1
Jared Kelenic hit a two-run homer off the right-field foul pole in the second inning, and the Seattle Mariners stopped a four-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on a windy Thursday when popups became adventures. Chicago scored in the fifth after Adam Engel’s two-out popup was blown from the middle of the infield into foul territory behind third base. Engel reached second when his popup to the first-base side kicked off the mitt of catcher Cal Raleigh for an error. Jake Burger followed with a popup that fell for an RBI single.

Cubs 5, Rockies 2 – Suzuki extends hit streak to 6, Cubs down Bryant, Rox 5-2
Seiya Suzuki stayed hot with an RBI double in a three-run first inning, Frank Schwindel homered and drove in two, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Colorado Rockies 5-2. Suzuki extended his hitting streak to six games since joining the majors from Japan and drove in his 10th run when the Cubs collected five straight hits against Kyle Freeland. Kris Bryant went 2 for 5 as the Rockies had their four-game winning streak snapped in the opener of Bryant’s second series against his former team. Bryant was traded by the Cubs to San Francisco last season and signed with the Rockies after the lockout.

Alex Nedeljkovic had 46 saves in a sharp performance against his former team, helping the Detroit Red Wings beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-0 on Thursday night. Moritz Seider, Adam Erne and Filip Zadina scored for Detroit. The Red Wings were recently eliminated from the postseason chase for the sixth straight year, but managed to push past the Metropolitan Division-leading Hurricanes despite being outplayed much of the way. Nedeljkovic had a strong run for the Hurricanes last season but the team traded him to Detroit in July and opted to reshape their goaltender position by bringing in Antti Raanta and Frederik Andersen. Nedeljkovic had his third shutout of the season.

Blackhawks 5, Sharks 4 – SO – Blackhawks top Sharks 5-4 in SO to end 8-game slide
Alex DeBrincat scored the lone goal in the shootout after having three assists in regulation and the Chicago Blackhawks snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over the San Jose Sharks. Jaycob Megna scored with 3:25 left in the third to tie it at 4 and send it to overtime. Patrick Kane scored his 24th goal and added two assists for Chicago. Dylan Strome notched his career-high 21st goal and had an assist and Taylor Raddysh and Calvin de Haan scored. Meier scored his team-leading 32nd goal for the Sharks, who have lost eight in a row. Scott Reedy and Rudolfs Balcers also scored for San Jose.

NFL – Lions sign former Ravens safety DeShon Elliott
The Detroit Lions have signed safety DeShon Elliott to a one-year contract. Detroit announced the move Thursday, potentially adding a starter in the secondary. The Lions are hoping Elliott’s injuries are behind him. He missed 10 games last season with a torn biceps’pectoral injury and also missed his entire rookie year in 2018 with the Baltimore Ravens. Elliott started in all 16 games during the 2020 season and all six he played in last year. He has 106 career tackles, including 3 1/2 sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception. Baltimore drafted the former Texas standout in the sixth round four years ago.

USFL – New USFL hoping to succeed where other spring leagues failed
The USFL kicks off Saturday night in Birmingham, Alabama, when the New Jersey Generals face the Birmingham Stallions. Fox and NBC Sports will each carry 22 games, including Saturday’s opener. It’s the first time since the 2007 regular-season finale between the New England Patriots and New York Giants that a game will air on more than one broadcast network. Fox Sports owns the USFL and is making a $150 million investment over three years. The only similarity between the USFL of the 1980s and this one is the team names.

NCAAFB – Michigan State searching for Walker replacements this spring
Michigan State leaned on Kenneth Walker III a lot during its turnaround season, handing him the ball 22 times a game with a much success. This spring and in the fall someone else will need to run the ball for the Spartans because Walker skipped his senior season to enter the NFL draft. The top candidates for the role may be a mystery until the season starts Sept. 2 against Western Michigan. The lack of healthy offensive linemen has led coach Mel Tucker choosing to have a practice instead of a game Saturday at Spartan Stadium.

This week’s Mid-West Family Player of the Week is Connor Shooks, a senior from Our Lady of the Lake High School.

In the first golf match of the season, Connor shot a 43 at Lake Michigan Hills to earn individual medalist honors as he defeated the rest of the field by 8 strokes. In the process, Connor helped lead the Lakers to a 2nd place team finish in the BCS Conference White Division Jamboree.

Last season, as a junior, Connor was co-individual medalist honors in the BCS White Division, earning him 1st Team All-Conference Honors.

Off of the course, Connor is involved with the First Tee, which is a youth development organization introducing the game of golf and its inherent values to young people, Knights of the Holy Temple, and Student Council.

In the classroom, Connor carries an impressive 4.08 GPA.

Though not fully decided on which university to attend next fall, Connor says that he has list narrowed down to Loyola University of Chicago, University of Notre Dame, and the University of Michigan.

Jackie Bradley, Kiké Hernández and Rafael Devers hit consecutive RBI doubles in the fourth inning to chase former teammate Eduardo Rodriguez and the Boston Red Sox held on to beat the Detroit Tigers 9-7 Wednesday and win the three-game series. Boston went into the fifth inning ahead 7-1 and led by 9-2 after batting in the seventh and had a two-run lead going into the final inning. Hansel Robles got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth by getting Jonathan Schoop to pop up on the infield and retired the side in order in the ninth, earning the save.

White Sox 6, Mariners 4 – Anderson helps White Sox beat Mariners for 4th straight win
Tim Anderson homered and drove in three runs in the rain, leading the banged-up Chicago White Sox to a 6-4 victory over Robbie Ray and the Seattle Mariners. Eloy Jiménez and Luis Robert also connected, helping Chicago to its fourth straight win since its dramatic loss at Detroit on opening day. Ray was charged with six runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings in his first loss with his new team. He won the AL Cy Young Award last year with Toronto and agreed to a $115 million, five-year contract with Seattle in November.

Pirates 6, Cubs 2 – Gamel 3-run homer, Hayes’ 4 hits lift Pirates over Cubs 6-2
Ben Gamel hit a three-run homer in the first inning, Ke’Bryan Hayes went 4 for 4 a day after getting a big contract and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 for a two-game series split. Kevin Newman hit a two-run triple in the third for the Pirates, who went 3 for 7 with runners in scoring position, a day after going 0 for 10. Seiya Suzuki was 1 for 3 with an RBI single in the fourth. He is 6 for 20 (.400) with three homers and nine RBIs in six games.

MLB – White Sox RHP Lance Lynn feeling good after knee surgery
Chicago White Sox right-hander Lance Lynn thinks he is ahead of schedule in his recovery from right knee surgery. Lynn was pulled from his final start of spring training with right knee discomfort — one of a series of injuries for the reigning AL Central champions already this season. Lynn went 11-6 with a 2.69 ERA in 28 starts last season in his first year in Chicago. Lynn provided an update on his recovery before Chicago’s game against Seattle.

NHL – Blackhawks, F Reese Johnson agree to 2-year extension
The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to a two-year contract extension with forward Reese Johnson. The deal runs through the 2023-24 season with an $800,000 salary-cap hit. The 23-year-old Johnson has one goal and five assists in 28 games this season. He made his NHL debut for Chicago last year.

NCAAHKY – BC coach Jerry York retires; most NCAA hockey wins ever
Boston College hockey coach Jerry York said Wednesday that he is retiring. The Hockey Hall of Famer has won five NCAA championships and the most games in college hockey history. The 76-year-old York told his coaches and players that it seemed to be the right time after 28 years in Chestnut Hill and 50 in coaching overall. He said he is ready to spend more time traveling with his wife, Bobbie, and watch his grandchildren’s hockey, lacrosse, and soccer games. York led Bowling Green to the 1984 NCAA title and then four more at BC. His 1,123 victories are the most ever.

NCAAFB – Fire at Camp Randall Stadium renovation injures one person
A fire broke out Wednesday morning during a renovation project at Camp Randall Stadium, causing one worker to get taken to the hospital with injuries. Madison Fire Department officials said paramedics treated and transported one person to a hospital with “serious injuries.” The name of the injured person wasn’t released. Wisconsin athletic officials said the fire involved roofing solvent material and occurred during construction. Wisconsin’s home football stadium is undergoing a renovation of its south end zone.

NCAAFB – Saban: Current state of college football not ‘sustainable’
Alabama coach Nick Saban is concerned about the current state of college football. He recently told The Associated Press "I don’t think what we’re doing right now is a sustainable model.” The new era of college athletics sees players having more opportunities to earn money than ever before and more power to determine where they play. Saban says if college athletes are going to be paid, he would like Alabama to provide the same amount to everyone on his team while supporting their ability to earn as much as they can in endorsement and sponsorship deals after they get to college.

NFL – Mayfield: Browns ‘disrespected,’ deceived him about future
Baker Mayfield feels the Cleveland Browns deceived him about their offseason plans, which resulted in them trading for Deshaun Watson. Speaking on a podcast, Mayfield, whose tumultuous four-year run as Cleveland’s quarterback essentially ended when the team acquired Watson in a stunning deal last month with Houston, said the team was not upfront with him. Mayfield said he feels “disrespected 100 percent” because the team told him one thing and did another. Mayfield struggled while playing most of last season with a shoulder injury. He’s currently on Cleveland’s roster as the Browns try to work out a trade.

Olympics – Allyson Felix says she’s retiring after 2022 track season
Allyson Felix, who closed the Tokyo Games last year with more Olympic medals than any U.S. track and field athlete in history, says she will retire after the 2022 season. At age 35, Felix won a bronze medal in the 400 meters last summer in Tokyo, then followed it up with a gold medal in the 4×400 relay. Those were her 10th and 11th Olympic medals, which helped her pass Carl Lewis in the U.S. record book. In an Instagram post, Felix says her final season won’t be so much about the numbers on the clock as enjoying the moment with her fans.

Garrett Whitlock (1-0) pitched four hitless innings for the win. Hirokazu Sawamura also got two outs in hitless relief of starter Rich Hill, who allowed three runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings. Boston, which has not been above .500, improved to 2-3.

White Sox 3, Mariners 2 – Robert’s tiebreaking homer leads White Sox over Mariners 3-2
Luis Robert hit his first home run of the season, a tiebreaking drive in the sixth inning that led the White Sox over the Seattle Mariners 3-2 in their home opener and extended their winning streak to three. Robert homered off Matt Brash (0-1), a 23-year-old right-hander making his major league debut. Seattle lost its third straight after starting with two wins. Seattle was 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position, getting an RBI single from Jesse Winker with two outs in the ninth off Liam Hendriks, who struck out Mitch Haniger on three pitches for his first save.

Cubs 2, Pirates 1 – Seiya Suzuki’s 2 homers lift Cubs to 2-1 win over Pirates
Seiya Suzuki homered twice, Drew Smyly pitched five scoreless innings and the Chicago Cubs beat Pittsburgh 2-1, spoiling the Pirates’ home opener. Suzuki connected for leadoff shots in the fifth and seventh. One of the top players in Japan, Suzuki signed an $85 million, five-year contract with the Cubs last month. Smyly permitted three hits and walked none in his Cubs debut. The left-hander agreed to a one-year contract last month.

Drake Batherson snapped a tie in the second period, and Anton Forsberg made 24 saves. Stützle’s goals were both empty-netters, one with 1:05 left and another with 14 seconds remaining. The 20-year-old forward also picked up his 30th assist on Batherson’s 15th goal of the season. Tyler Bertuzzi scored for Detroit, and Thomas Greiss made 28 stops.

Blake Lizotte scored twice, Phillip Danault had a goal and an assist and the Los Angeles Kings snapped a three-game skid with a 5-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. Trevor Moore and Jordan Spence also scored for Los Angeles. Jonathan Quick finished with 18 saves. Taylor Raddysh and Patrick Kanes scored for the Blackhawks, who dropped their eighth straight game (0-6-2). Collin Delia made 31 saves.

NCAAHKY – Danton Cole is out as Michigan State hockey coach
Danton Cole won’t return as Michigan State hockey coach. Athletic director Alan Haller says the team needs a “fresh start” after a 12-23-1 season. The Spartans lost 15 of their last 16 games. Cole’s record over five seasons was 58-101-12. Cole was coach for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program before returning to MSU in 2017. Cole played on MSU’s 1986 national championship team. He and Don McSween share the school record for most games played, 180. Haller says Cole “put his heart” into his job as coach.

Hockey – AP source: Women’s hockey talks between rivals break down
The Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association has decided to break off talks with the rival Premier Hockey Federation. Representatives from the PWHPA and PHF met in March at the request of the NHL. The NHL had hoped the discussions would thaw relations between the sides and get them to work together to unify the sport. The PHWPA is headlined by U.S. and Canadian national team players. It has long opposed uniting with the PHF back to the days it was known as the National Women’s Hockey League.

NFL – Congress tells FTC Commanders may have broken financial laws
The U.S. House Oversight Committee sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission saying it found evidence the NFL’s Washington Commanders engaged in potentially unlawful financial conduct. The committee says the team withheld ticket revenue from visiting teams and refundable ticket deposits from season-ticket holders. The committee said emails, documents and statements made by former employees indicate team executives and owner Dan Snyder engaged in “a troubling, long-running, and potentially unlawful pattern of financial conduct.” The NFL says it is engaging a former SEC chair to review the most serious allegations.

Golf – Tiger Woods’ return to Masters a winner for TV networks
Tiger Woods fell short of his goal of winning the Masters golf tournament in his stunning return from serious injuries suffered in an auto accident, but he was a winner for the television networks who followed the event. The Nielsen company said CBS’ coverage of the final round averaged nearly 10.2 million viewers — the most for any golf telecast since 2019, when Woods last won the coveted green jacket. ESPN’s coverage of the first two round scored its best numbers since 2018. ESPN’s peak moment for viewership came just as Woods was finishing up his second round.

FIFA – FIFA warned court of World Cup chaos if Russia played
FIFA successfully argued to sport’s highest court that letting Russia try to qualify for the World Cup risked doing “irreparable and chaotic” harm to the competition. The legal debate between FIFA and Russia’s soccer federation was published by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. It explained why a CAS judge denied an urgent Russian request last month to freeze a FIFA ban on its teams. The interim ruling in Russia’s appeal was made on March 18 pending a full appeal hearing. That is likely due at CAS in the weeks ahead when Russian soccer will challenge FIFA again.
