Malaki Branham scored 22 points and No. 23 Ohio State snapped a two-game losing streak with an 80-69 win over Michigan State. Branham scored 15 of his points in the second half and finished 9 of 16 from the floor. The Buckeyes made their first five shots in the opening 2:47 and sped to a 13-0 lead. Michigan State rallied and closed within two points with just over eight minutes left in the first half. Gabe Brown led Michigan State with 13 points and Marcus Bingham Jr. added 11.

Keegan Murray scored 15 of his 23 points in the first half to help No. 24 Iowa build a big lead, and the streaking Hawkeyes went on to beat Michigan 82-71. The Hawkeyes led 47-30 at halftime and coasted to their fifth straight victory and eighth win in nine games. The Wolverines are the only team to beat Iowa since mid-February. Michigan had no shot to win the rematch because it simply could not slow down Iowa’s dynamic and balanced offense.

MLB, union meet for 1 1/2 hours, discuss next step in talks

Deputy Commissioner Dan Halem and chief union negotiator Bruce Meyer met for 1 1/2 hours and discussed the major issues in the stalled talks to reach a deal that would end Major League Baseball’s lockout. Union general counsel Ian Penny and MLB Executive Vice President Morgan Sword also participated in the session. The players’ association executive board was to held a conference call later in the day. There was no known decision on the timing of the next negotiating session. Baseball’s ninth work stoppage was in its 92nd day, the sport’s first labor conflict since 1995 to cause canceled games.

Alex DeBrincat scored 2:23 into overtime, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat Duncan Keith and the Edmonton Oilers 4-3. Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist for Chicago, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 29 saves. Dominik Kubalik and Sam Lafferty also scored. With Edmonton star Leon Draisaitl in the penalty box for tripping Caleb Jones in overtime, Kane set up DeBrincat for the winning one-timer. It was DeBrincat’s 30th goal of the season. It was Keith’s first game back in Chicago since he was traded to Edmonton in July. The 38-year-old defenseman won three Stanley Cup titles during 16 seasons with the Blackhawks.

MLB – Fans chant 'We want baseball!' but won't get it anytime soon

As Rob Manfred stood behind a podium in the left-field corner of Roger Dean Stadium, fans chanted at the baseball commissioner from outside the spring training home of the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals: “We want baseball!” they yelled. They won’t get it anytime soon. Owners and players were unable to agree on a labor contract to replace the collective bargaining agreement that expired Dec. 1. So Manfred followed through with his threat and canceled the first two series for each of the 30 major league teams. The announcement cut each club’s schedule from 162 games to likely 156 at most.

NHL – Russian NHL players mostly staying silent; EA Sports removes Russia

Most Russian players in the National Hockey League have remained silent about their country's invasion of Ukraine. That is intentional based on the potential repercussions for them and their families back home. Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin is among the very few hockey players from Russia who have publicly weighed in on the situation. Ovechkin has long had a strong connection to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He nonetheless made a plea for peace when asked about the war. The Russian parliament is considering making it a crime to spread what the government considers fake news about military efforts in Ukraine.  Video game publisher EA Sports announced it would remove Russian clubs and the national team from its hugely popular FIFA series, and would remove the Russia and Belarus hockey teams from its NHL series.

NHL – Quebec allows Canadiens to return to full capacity March 12

The Montreal Canadiens will be allowed to have full capacity at the Bell Centre sooner than expected. Quebec’s government had earmarked March 14 as the return to 100% capacity in venues across the province, but the timeline was moved up Wednesday. That means the Canadiens will be allowed to fill their arena to capacity when they host the Seattle Kraken on March 12. It will be the first time Montreal has had a capacity crowd in three months. Proof of vaccination will no longer be required for fans attending games. Fans will, however, still be required to wear face coverings at all times while not eating or drinking.

Caleb Houstan added 16 points for Michigan (16-12, 10-8 Big Ten). The Wolverines moved into a three-way tie with the Michigan State and Rutgers for sixth in the conference standings - a game behind No. 23 Ohio State and No. 24 Iowa, which are tied for fourth. The top-four seeds earn a double-bye into the quarterfinals of next week’s Big Ten Tournament. Gabe Brown led Michigan State (19-10, 10-8) with 12 points and Tyson Walker scored 11. The Wolverines were without coach Juwan Howard, who served the 3rd of a 5-game suspension.

Raymond’s 16th goal of the season came on a rebound of a Tyler Bertuzzi shot. Carter Rowney, Michael Rasmussen and Dylan Larkin scored in regulation for Detroit, which had lost its last two games. Alex Nedeljkovic made 27 saves for the Red Wings. Sebastian Aho, Jesper Fast and Jordan Staal scored for the Hurricanes, while Antti Raanta stopped 38 shots.

NHL – Chicago Blackhawks drop interim tag for GM Kyle Davidson

The Chicago Blackhawks have hired Kyle Davidson as general manager, dropping his interim tag instead of going outside the floundering franchise for new leadership. Davidson has been with the Blackhawks since he joined the organization as a hockey operations intern in 2010. The 33-year-old from Sudbury, Ontario, also has worked as a video analyst, hockey operations manager and assistant GM. Davidson was elevated to the interim job after Stan Bowman resigned in October in the wake of a report by an outside law firm that found the organization mishandled allegations that an assistant coach sexually assaulted a player in 2010.

The game marked the return of Magic guard Markelle Fultz, who tore his left ACL almost 14 months ago. Fultz had 10 points and six assists in 16 minutes, leaving the game with the Magic up by 16 points in the middle of the fourth quarter.

NCAAMBKB – Gonzaga, Arizona remain atop poll amid big changes

The top six — and seven of the top 10 — teams in the AP Top 25 lost on the same day last week, both records. The single day of chaos led to some big changes in this week’s poll — everywhere but at the top.  Gonzaga and Arizona remained the top two teams in the poll released Monday, holding steady despite both losing their most recent games. The Zags received 43 first-place votes from a 61-person media panel after being a unanimous pick last week.  No. 3 Baylor had four first-place votes and No. 4 Duke picked up 11. Auburn rounded out the top five.

MLB – MLB labor talks go past midnight amid opening day deadline

Locked-out players and Major League Baseball engaged in a series of intense meetings that stretched into early Tuesday morning as they attempted to forge the path to a labor deal before management’s deadline for salvaging opening day on March 31. In talks that began Monday, the sides met for a 12th time in a session that started after 1 a.m. on Tuesday as the lockout reached its 90th day. They made progress toward an agreement but remained very far apart on key issues. After months of talks in fits and starts, the sides shifted into possible deal-making mode.

MLB – Jeter leaves Marlins

Derek Jeter announced a surprise departure from the Miami Marlins after 4 1/2 mostly unsuccessful years that didn’t come remotely close to matching his success as a player for the New York Yankees.  Jeter became CEO of the Marlins in September 2017 when Bruce Sherman bought the team from Jeffrey Loria. A five-time World Series champion during a playing career spent entirely with the Yankees from 1995-2014, Jeter was elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame in 2020. Miami went 218-327 during his four seasons at the helm, finishing with a winning record only once at 31-29 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
