NFL Draft – Lions take Hutchinson at No. 2, trade up to take Williams
The Detroit Lions have selected Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson with the No. 2 pick, addressing a desperate need with a hometown star. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound edge rusher was a sack-master for the Wolverines whose consistency and relentlessness helped lead them to their first College Football Playoff. Detroit also traded up to take Alabama receiver Jameson Williams at No. 12 overall. Hutchinson was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy this past season for the Wolverines.

NFL Draft – 9 trades shake up 1st round
Two more prominent wide receivers switched teams with Tennessee’s A.J. Brown and Baltimore’s Marquise Brown getting swapped during a dizzying stretch of the NFL draft. The Ravens traded Marquise Brown and the 100th overall pick to Arizona for the 23rd pick in the draft. Then the Titans dealt A.J. Brown to Philadelphia for the 18th and 101st picks. In all, 17 of the 23 picks made between Nos. 7 and 29 in the draft were made by teams that acquired them in trades. Eleven of those picks changed hands in the nine trades made during draft.

NFL Draft – Defense 1st, then offense, with receivers a focal point
In an NFL draft focused early on stoppers, it was the goers — wide receivers — who stole the spotlight Thursday night. Not simply prospects, either. Yes, the first five selections came on the defensive side of the ball, including edge rushers Travon Walker of national champion Georgia to Jacksonville and Aidan Hutchinson of Michigan to Detroit at Nos. 1 and 2. It was the first time in 31 years that no player on offense went in the opening five picks. So, naturally, the next five choices were on offense. And those kept coming: right through No. 12. And the theme throughout the first 20 picks was to get guys who could catch the ball — including Philadelphia acquiring standout A.J. Brown from the Titans, and Arizona getting veteran Marquise Brown from the Ravens.

NFL Draft – Bengals get Michigan DB Daxton Hill with 31st pick
The Cincinnati Bengals selected Michigan defensive back Daxton Hill with the 31st pick of the draft. The Bengals passed up some other enticing defensive players to get someone they expect to contribute right away in their secondary. The 6-foot, 191-pound Hill mostly played safety but also some slot cornerback at Michigan. Coach Zac Taylor says he could fit in at safety or nickel in the Bengals defense.

NBA – DeRozan, Bulls looking to build on breakthrough season
DeMar DeRozan wants to build on a standout season and help the Chicago Bulls make the next jump after taking a big step forward. He gets the sense from management they’ll try to do it with their core remaining intact. The Bulls no doubt made huge strides following a massive overhaul that began when Arturas Karnisovas was hired out of Denver’s front office in two years ago to lead their basketball operation. Chicago went 46-36 in coach Billy Donovan’s second season and made the playoffs for the first time since 2017. They were eliminated in the 1st round by Milwaukee, 4-1.

NHL – Blackhawks hire longtime Cubs exec Greenberg as associate GM
The Chicago Blackhawks have completed their leadership team by hiring longtime Chicago Cubs executive Jeff Greenberg as associate general manager under new GM Kyle Davidson. The Blackhawks said Greenberg will be responsible for “overseeing the strategic systems and processes that will fuel” the team’s hockey operations. He will “establish and optimize a modern, continually evolving approach using systems, technology, data and talent.” Greenberg’s start date is May 9. He rounds out what the team called the “core brain trust.” The Blackhawks brought back longtime executive Norm Maciver as an associate GM to oversee the scouting operation last month after a stint as director of player personnel for the Seattle Kraken.

Twins 7, Tigers 1 – Correa gets 3 hits; Twins top Tigers to go 6-0 in homestand
Carlos Correa broke out of a slump with three hits and three RBIs and the Minnesota Twins completed a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers with a 7-1 victory on Thursday. Gio Urshela, Trevor Larnach, and Gilbert Celestino each had two hits for the Twins. Minnesota has won seven straight and finished off a 6-0 homestand that also included a sweep of the White Sox. Correa entered the game on an 0-for-10 skid that had dropped his batting average to .167. He came through with a two-run double in the fifth, an RBI single in the sixth and another single in the eighth.

Royals 5, White Sox 2 – F/10 – Royals take down White Sox 5-2 after 3-run 10th
Rookie Kyle Isbel hit a two-run single in Kansas City’s three-run 10th inning, and the Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2. Whit Merrifield scored the go-ahead run in the 10th when White Sox catcher Reese McGuire was charged with a passed ball with the bases loaded and two out. Isbel, who was promoted from Triple-A Omaha before the game, got his hit off left-hander Aaron Bummer. Chicago was held to three hits through the first seven innings, but tied it in the eighth. Royals starter Brad Keller induced 12 groundball outs and didn’t throw more than 15 pitches in any of his seven innings.

Braves 5, Cubs 1 – Acuña returns, Wright dominant again, Braves beat Cubs 5-1
Ronald Acuña Jr. went 1 for 5 with two stolen bases in his return to the Braves lineup, but it was Kyle Wright who claimed a starring role, pitching three-hit ball over a career-high seven innings to give Atlanta a 5-1 win over the Cubs. The struggling Braves took two of three from Chicago for their first series win of the season. Wright improved to 3-0, striking out eight while walking four. Austin Riley and Dansby Swanson hit solo homers off former Braves pitcher Drew Smyly. Adam Duvall provided some insurance with a two-run shot against Ethan Roberts in the eighth.

WNBA – Chicago to host WNBA All-Star Game for first time
Chicago will host the WNBA All-Star Game for the first time, the league announced. The game will coincide with two major youth girls’ basketball tournaments being played in Chicago the weekend of July 10. The league will host a two-day “WNBA Live” event that weekend. On July 9, the two All-Star teams will have practice indoors with participants from the Nike Nationals tournament in attendance. Later that day, the annual 3-point contest and skills challenge will also take place. The All-Star Game will played a day later.

NCAABSB – Police: Paint in Kansas team’s water; 2 juveniles suspected
Police in the central Kansas town of Lindsborg announced two boys are suspected of being involved in the contamination of a water cooler used by the Kansas Wesleyan baseball team during a doubleheader at Bethany College last weekend. Both schools contacted police to file a report about a foreign substance found in Kansas Wesleyan’s water. Police did not say how it connected the juveniles to the tainted water and said no one associated with either college was responsible for tampering with the water cooler. The substance mixed into the water was paint used to put lines on the field.

Golf – Tiger Woods heads to Southern Hill for PGA practice round
Tiger Woods is at Southern Hill three weeks before the start of the PGA Championship. It’s the first step toward deciding whether his right leg that was badly damaged in a February 2021 car accident can allow him to compete in another major. Woods made a positive return from the crash at the Masters earlier this month. He made the cut for the 22nd straight time. He tired on the weekend and finished 47th out of 52 players. Golf Channel says the head pro at Southern Hills caddied for him on Thursday. Tulsa TV station KOTV showed an overhead shot of Woods putting. He was wearing a black sleeve on his right leg.

Girls hockey programs show promise in nontraditional markets
The NHL playoffs will take place next week in Dallas, Tampa, Nashville, Raleigh and Washington, D.C., where girls hockey has expanded immensely over the past decade. But participation in those nontraditional markets still lags far behind hockey hotbeds like Massachusetts, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. The 3,177 female players aged 18 and younger registered by USA Hockey in Texas, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia combined is still fewer than in Wisconsin alone. The number of girls playing in those southern and mid-Atlantic locations is up more than 71% from 2011 to 2021. NHL teams, USA Hockey and others are working on getting more exposure, education and ice time to improve those numbers.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 33 points and nine rebounds and the defending NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks routed the Chicago Bulls 116-100 on Wednesday night to finish off the first-round series in five games. The third-seeded Bucks advanced to face second-seeded Boston in the Eastern Conference semifinals, with Game 1 on Sunday in Boston. The Celtics swept Brooklyn. After splitting the first two games, the Bucks won the last three by an average margin of 23.3 points. They won those three games without Khris Middleton, the All-Star who sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during the fourth quarter of Game 2. Patrick Williams scored 23 points for Chicago.

Joe Ryan threw seven innings of one-hit ball and Max Kepler stayed hot with a pair of home runs as the streaking Minnesota Twins defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-0. Ryan Jeffers homered, doubled and drove in three runs for the Twins, who won their sixth game in a row. Michael Pineda took the loss for Detroit. He gave up four runs, including all three Twins homers, in five innings against his former team. Ryan was dominant from the start, holding the Tigers hitless until Miguel Cabrera laced a single in the fourth. The right-hander walked just one batter and struck out nine, two shy of his career high. He extended his scoreless streak to 17 2/3 innings and lowered his ERA to 1.17.

White Sox 7, Royals 3 – Vaughn homers as White Sox stop slide by topping Royals 7-3
Andrew Vaughn hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the seventh inning, and the Chicago White Sox stopped an eight-game slide with a 7-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals. The winning rally for the White Sox started when Danny Mendick and Tim Anderson hit consecutive two-out singles off Collin Snider. Scott Barlow then came in, and Vaughn drove his first pitch into the home bullpen in left. The White Sox added another run in the eighth when Leury García scampered home on Reese McGuire’s double-play grounder.

Cubs 6, Braves 3 – F/10 – Contreras, Wisdom come through in 10th, Cubs beat Braves 6-3
Willson Contreras gave Chicago the lead with a run-scoring double in the 10th inning, Patrick Wisdom followed with a two-run homer, and the Cubs beat the Atlanta Braves 6-3. Contreras lined his double to the left field wall off Tyler Matzek to drive in automatic runner Ian Happ. After Frank Schwindel struck out, Wisdom launched a drive into the left-center seats for his third homer of the season. The Cubs recovered after right-hander Mychal Givens blew a 3-1 lead in the eighth. Dansby Swanson tied the game with a two-out, two-run single to right. David Robertson relieved Givens and got the win.

Blackhawks 4, Golden Knights 3 – SO – Johnson scores in SO, Blackhawks beat Golden Knights 4-3
Tyler Johnson scored in the seventh round of the shootout, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat Vegas 4-3, eliminating the Golden Knights from the playoff race. Johnson scored on a wrist shot seconds before Dallas, which needed a point to eliminate Vegas regardless, went into overtime at home against Arizona. Johnson’s goal was the only one in 14 attempts in the tiebreaker. Taylor Raddysh had two goals and Caleb Jones also scored for the Blackhawks, who won their second straight. Kevin Lankinen stopped 37 shots. Michael Amadio, Alec Martinez and Max Pacioretty scored for Vegas, and Chandler Stephenson had three assists. Logan Thompson also had 37 saves.

NFL Draft – Top of NFL draft could lack skill position players
This year’s NFL draft has the chance to be unlike any other in recent years with a possible long wait before any of the players who throw, catch or run with the ball coming off the board. There has never been a draft that didn’t have a quarterback, receiver, running back or tight end taken in the top 10 picks in the history of the NFL. A player from those positions going in the top five in all but one of the past 24 drafts. That could change this year with few projections showing skill position players going in the first handful of picks.

NFL Draft – Amid uncertainty, prospects display confidence
Very little is certain heading into an NFL draft. Not that the prospects on hand seem to care. There’s a level of confidence that, for them, Thursday night’s first round is a sure thing. All of the 20 men on hand for a Play 60 event Wednesday with local youths and Commissioner Roger Goodell believe they have shown the goods to be a high first-rounder. Even the very first pick, which for the second straight year Jacksonville owns. Most likely that will be Aidan Hutchinson of Michigan or Travon Walker of Georgia, both elite pass rushers.

CFL – CFL moving hashmarks closer to center of field
The Canadian Football League is moving its hashmarks closer to the center of the field and will allow teams to take the ball at the 40-yard line instead of the 35 following a field goal or single under a series of rules changes recently approved by the board of governors. Horse Racing – Hearing officer recommends 2-year NYRA ban for Bob Baffert
A retired New York State Supreme Court Justice has recommended a two-year suspension for trainer Bob Baffert for repeated medication violations after a New York Racing Association hearing. Hearing officer O. Peter Sherwood revealed his recommendation in a 50-page report released Wednesday. Baffert’s camp and NYRA have two weeks to offer rebuttals before a three-person panel makes a final decision on the Triple Crown-winning trainer’s status. A suspension in New York until July 2024 would be the result if the panel takes up Sherwood’s full recommendation. Churchill Downs has banned Baffert from entering horses in the Kentucky Derby this year and next.

NCAA – As college sports evolve, what will be NCAA president’s job?
The NCAA is looking for a new president. Mark Emmert will step down from the job no later than June 2023. Observers say the NCAA should first decide what they want the function of the NCAA to be. The organization is making sweeping changes and handing more power to conferences and schools. Finding someone to lead amid all that turmoil is a challenge. Still, some involved in college sports still believe it will be necessary to have leadership at the top with a comprehensive vision for an organization that still emphasizes the importance of education.

CHL – Russian, Belarusian players ineligible for draft
The Canadian Hockey League said Wednesday that Russian and Belarusian players will be ineligible for selection in its July 1 import draft because of the war in Ukraine. The CHL is the umbrella organization for the three major junior hockey leagues — the Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The ban does not include players currently on CHL protected lists. Last June at the most recent import draft, 16 players from Russia and 11 from Belarus were selected. Russian and Belarusian teams have been banned by the International Ice Hockey Federation from all events at all levels.

WNBA – Will a Russian prisoner exchange impact Griner?
Brittney Griner remains detained in Russia and it’s unclear how an unexpected prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia that freed marine veteran Trevor Reed will affect the status of the WNBA star. Griner has been detained in Russia since mid-February. The deal announced by both countries involving Reed, an American imprisoned for nearly three years, would have been a notable diplomatic maneuver even in times of peace. It was all the more surprising because it was done as Russia’s war with Ukraine has driven relations with the U.S. to their lowest point in decades. Griner is a two-time Olympic gold medalist who was arrested in Russia for allegedly possessing a cannabis derivative legal in much of the world. The offense can mean up to 10 years in prison.

NBAGL – NBA G-League – Grand Rapids Deltaplex closing in July
The home of the Grand Rapids Gold, the NBA G-League affiliate of the Denver Nuggets will be closing.  The DeltaPlex in Walker, just north of Grand Rapids will close it doors on July 31st of this year.   The DeltaPlex opened in the 1950’s at Stadium Arena, and was home to two International Hockey League teams, the Grand Rapids Rockets in the 1950’s and the Grand Rapids Owls in the 1970’s.  More recently the DeltaPlex still holds concerts, has been home two NBA G-League teams and was the host for the MHSAA’s competitive cheerleading state finals.  The facility became obsolete in the mid 1990’s when the new Van Andel Arena opened downtown.  The team say that they are working with the city to see if a move to Van Andel could be done.  The Gold just completed their first year as affiliate of the Denver Nuggets, prior to that, the DeltaPlex was home to the Grand Rapids Drive, the affiliate of the Detroit Pistons.

Detroit catcher Eric Haase made a throwing error on a botched rundown, capping a chaotic play that gave the Minnesota Twins two runs for a 5-4 win over the Tigers. Miguel Sanó had the final hit for the Twins — and his ill-advised baserunning wound up helping them win their fifth in a row. The Twins trailed 4-3 when Detroit closer Gregory Soto walked Trevor Larnach and Gio Urshela to start the inning. With one out, Sanó hit a line drive that glanced off right fielder Robbie Grossman’s glove and rolled to the wall for a rocket of a single. Larnach was held up at third base, but Sanó kept running toward second and Twins runners seemed trapped. But Haase throw soared over third baseman Jeimer Candelario’s head and two runs scored.

Royals 6, White Sox 0 – Lynch shines as Royals blank slumping White Sox 6-0
Daniel Lynch pitched six crisp innings and the Kansas City Royals handed the Chicago White Sox their eighth straight loss with a 6-0 victory. Bobby Witt Jr. had two hits and Carlos Santana drove in two runs, helping Kansas City stop a four-game slide. The Royals were outscored 22-12 in a sweep at Seattle over the weekend. Lynch allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked two. The White Sox issued 11 walks and committed two more errors, running their major league-leading total to 20. It’s the longest losing streak for Chicago since it dropped eight in a row in June 2018.

Braves 3, Cubs 1 – Demeritte, Fried lead Braves to needed win, 3-1 over Cubs
Travis Demeritte hit his first big league homer in nearly three years and made a sliding catch to back another strong outing by Max Fried. That gave the Atlanta Braves a much-needed 3-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The reigning World Series champions won for only the third time in their last eight games. The Cubs have now lost six of seven. Fried pitched four-hit ball over six innings. His only big mistake was a changeup that Ian Happ took deep leading off the third. Demeritte broke up a 1-1 tie in the fifth with a homer into the Chop House restaurant off Marcus Stroman.

MLB – White Sox OF Eloy Jiménez has surgery to repair torn tendon
Chicago White Sox outfielder Eloy Jiménez has undergone surgery to repair a torn hamstring tendon behind his right knee. The White Sox expect Jiménez to return in six to eight weeks. Jiménez got hurt during Saturday’s 9-2 loss at Minnesota when he stretched for first base while running out a grounder to third. The 25-year-old slugger stumbled after the play and his right knee appeared to lock up. Jiménez’s injury is similar to the one that sidelined White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal for almost two months last season.

NCAA – NCAA President Mark Emmert stepping down no later than 2023
NCAA President Mark Emmert is stepping down after 12 years on the job. NCAA Board of Governors Chairman John DeGioia announced the move and said it was by mutual agreement. Emmert will continue to serve in his role until a new president is selected and in place or until June 30, 2023. Emmert was appointed to the job in April 2010. He had led the University of Washington and LSU prior to taking over at the NCAA. The job has changed radically since then.

Golf – The Open – Record crowd of nearly 300K expected for Open at St. Andrews
The British Open had a modest return of fans last year because of the pandemic. Now it’s full capacity and the R&A expects a record turnout for St. Andrews this summer. Organizers anticipate 290,000 spectators at the Old Course. That would smash the record of 239,000 at St. Andrews in 2000 when Tiger Woods completed the career Grand Slam. Woods will be back at St. Andrews for the sixth time.

The Chicago Bulls might have to get by without Zach LaVine when they try to avoid playoff elimination by the Milwaukee Bucks. The two-time All-Star is in the NBA’s health and safety protocols. The Bucks lead the first-round series 3-1 and will try to wrap up the series in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. Coach Billy Donovan says LaVine wasn’t feeling great.He is in the health and safety protocols for the third time in a year. He tested positive for the coronavirus last April and again in December.

NHL – Customs seizes counterfeit 1936 Red Wings’ Stanley Cup rings
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has seized 10 counterfeit Stanley Cup rings for the 1936 Detroit Red Wings championship team due to trademark violations. Customs officers at the Port of Champlain facility in New York found the rings valued at $15,000 earlier this month after examining a shipment. CBP said the shipment violated the intellectual property rights of the Red Wings’ trademark. The 1936 Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Cup Final.

NFL – Lions exercise 5th-year option on tight end T.J. Hockenson
The Detroit Lions have exercised their fifth-year option on tight end T.J. Hockenson. A first-round pick in 2019 out of Iowa, Hockenson has 160 receptions for 1,673 yards and 12 touchdowns in his three seasons. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2020.

NFL – Bears GM Ryan Poles interested in acquiring more draft picks
With so many roster holes heading into his first NFL draft, Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles is looking closely for trade partners so the team can acquire more picks. The Bears have six picks and none in the first or fourth rounds. Poles doesn’t necessarily view it as a situation where he’s pressured to find a receiver or offensive lineman in a particular spot to help quarterback Justin Fields. But he is looking to elevate the team overall. Poles likens what he has done with the roster so far to what he and his wife see on home-improvement shows on television.

NFL – Fountains, scubas, slot machines, Ferris wheel and NFL draft
NFL draft night on Thursday will include prospects walking a red carpet above the Bellagio fountains, a theater built specifically for the proceedings where they hope to hear their names called early, and the aura of gambling everywhere. It’s a different look for a league that long shunned any association with betting. There’s no question this draft has the flavor of Sin City. The league seems very pleased about that. The draft will also spotlight the league’s partnership with casino company Caesars Entertainment.
         
IIHF – Russia removed as host of 2023 worlds in men’s ice hockey
Russia has been removed as host of the 2023 world championship in men’s ice hockey. The tournament was to be played in Vladimir Putin’s home city St. Petersburg. The International Ice Hockey Federation cites “concern for the safety and well-being of all participating players, officials, media, and fans” for the decision. It was the latest blow to Russia in its favored winter sports in the fallout from the country’s war on Ukraine. Ice hockey’s decision comes one day after Russia’s signature annual international figure skating competition was pulled.

Tennis – Djokovic can play at Wimbledon; no vaccination required
The All England Club says Novak Djokovic will be allowed to defend his title at Wimbledon despite not being vaccinated against COVID-19 because the shots are not required to enter Britain. Djokovic is a 34-year-old from Serbia who is ranked No. 1. He missed the Australian Open in January after being deported from that country because he had not received the vaccination against the illness caused by the coronavirus. Wimbledon starts on June 27. All England Club Chief Executive Sally Bolton said during Tuesday’s annual briefing that vaccination will not be a condition of entry for players to compete at the Grand Slam tournament this year.

Tennis – Wimbledon defends ‘agonizing decision’ to ban Russians
All England Club officials are defending the decision to bar players from Russia and Belarus from Wimbledon this year because of the invasion of Ukraine. Club Chief Executive Sally Bolton says there is a responsibility to limit the possibility of Russians’ success at Wimbledon being used as a propaganda tool by that country. Reigning U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev is among the prominent players affected by the ban. Medvedev recently reached No. 1 in the rankings and is currently No. 2. After Russia attacked Ukraine in February — with help from Belarus — tennis players from Russia and Belarus were able to continue competing but as “neutral” athletes not formally representing their nations.

Horse Racing – 2nd horse in 2 days dies in training at Santa Anita
A filly has died after suffering a training injury at Santa Anita in what is the track’s second such death in two days and fifth this year. According to the California Horse Racing Board, the 4-year-old filly named Cayton Kid suffered a musculoskeletal injury at the Arcadia track. A 3-year-old filly named Magnolia suffered the same type of training injury Monday and was euthanized. Of the five deaths at Santa Anita this year, four happened during training and one during a race. That’s down sharply from the 42 horse deaths at the track in 2019, which prompted a slew of rules changes.

NCAAMBKB – Michigan’s Diabate enters draft, Dickinson staying in school
Michigan freshman Moussa Diabate is entering the NBA draft. The 6-foot-11 forward announced his plans on Monday, a day after standout center Hunter Dickinson decided to return for his junior season. Diabate started 26 of 32 games for the Wolverines, averaging nine points and six rebounds. He was born in Paris and played high school basketball in Florida. Diabate has until June 1 to withdraw from the draft. The 7-1 Dickinson averaged 18.6 points and 8.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks a game last season, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors.

Miguel Cabrera reached the 3,000-hit mark on a weekend afternoon in front of an adoring crowd at his home ballpark in Detroit. It was a moment worthy of the milestone. It could also be the last time it happens for a while. In an era of high strikeout totals and low batting averages, there aren’t any other players who seem likely to reach 3,000 hits any time soon. In fact, the first few weeks of this season are a reminder of how current trends in baseball could affect which milestones remain in reach for the game’s top players.

NBA – Bulls’ Caruso in concussion protocol ahead of Bucks’ Game 5
Chicago Bulls guard Alex Caruso is in the NBA’s concussion protocol and is questionable for Game 5 of the first-round playoff series at Milwaukee. Caruso took an inadvertent hit to the face from the Bucks’ Jevon Carter while trying to get around a pick late in the second quarter on Sunday. He exited with a bloody nose. The Bucks lead 3-1 and will try to wrap up the series at home on Wednesday night. Milwaukee won the past two games in Chicago by a combined 54 points.

NFL – Virginia to probe Washington Commanders dealings
Virginia’s attorney general has launched an inquiry into the Washington Commanders following allegations of financial improprieties raised by a congressional committee. Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares disclosed his office’s investigation in a letter to a team lawyer. The House Committee on Oversight and Reform disclosed earlier this month that it found evidence the team engaged in deceptive business practices for more than a decade. The Commanders have been in talks with Virginia lawmakers about a deal to build a new stadium.

NCAAFB – Big Ten’s best defenses come out of spring in rebuild mode
Coordinator changes and heavy player personnel losses made it a spring of uncertainty for the top Big Ten defenses. Start with Wisconsin. The Badgers have been in the national top five in total defense three straight years. They must replace eight of their top 10 tacklers. Penn State has a new coordinator in Manny Diaz. The former Miami coach must fill spots of as many as six players who could be drafted. Defending conference champion Michigan must replace seven starters. Ohio State also is retooling its defense after it got exposed against Oregon and in a 42-27 loss to Michigan.

Golf – PGA – Mickelson signs up for PGA events, ask to play in Saudi-funded tournament
Phil Mickelson has signed up for the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open. His manager also asked the PGA Tour for permission to play in a Saudi-funded golf tournament outside London.  It was the first word from the Mickelson camp since Feb. 22, when Mickelson apologized for explosive remarks in a book excerpt by Alan Shipnuck in which he disparaged the Saudis behind Greg Norman’s attempt at a rival league and said he wanted leverage against the “obnoxious greed” of the PGA Tour.

NCAABSB – N Dakota St still waits for home game after 36 in a row away
The North Dakota State baseball team has never experienced anything like this year The Bison have played their first 36 games on the road or at neutral sites because of an unusually wet and cold spring in Fargo. That number is heading toward 39 after Monday’s announcement the home opener Tuesday has been canceled. The Bison have logged almost 22,000 miles while playing games in seven different states. They are 23-13 overall and lead the Summit League at 11-4. NDSU coach Tyler Oakes says the Bison don’t get the credit they deserve for being 10 games over .500.

NCAABSB – Kansas college looking into alleged water cooler tampering
Bethany College officials are investigating an allegation that someone associated with its baseball program intentionally contaminated the water cooler used by the opposing team.  Kansas Wesleyan athletic director Steve Wilson said a foreign substance was discovered in the cooler during a doubleheader Sunday. He said it is common practice for the home team, Bethany in this case, to provide water for the visitor. Wilson declined further comment, including whether any players, coaches or support staff drank the water or became ill.

The defending NBA champions led by 22 early in the third quarter and steadied themselves after a push by Chicago. They’ll try to wrap up the series in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. A day after getting his 3,000th hit, Tigers star Miguel Cabrera didn’t play. He got three hits in a doubleheader split Saturday, raising his career hit total to 3,002. Charlie Blackmon had four hits, scored twice and drove in two runs for Colorado. Chad Kuhl again pitched well for his new team, allowing one run and four hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out four and has a 1.10 ERA in three starts for the Rockies.

Twins 6, White Sox 4 – F/10 – Buxton’s 2nd HR, 469-foot shot, lifts Twins over ChiSox 6-4
Byron Buxton hit his second homer of the game, a 469-foot, three-run drive that overcame a 10th-inning deficit and lifted the Minnesota Twins over Chicago 6-4 andsent the White Sox to their seventh straight loss. Buxton hit a two-run, opposite-field homer to right in the seventh against Aaron Bummer that tied the score 3-3. After Yasmani Grandal’s RBI single in the 10th off Joe Smith (1-0), Liam Hendriks (0-2) walked José Godoy with one out in the bottom half and Buxton drove a fastball into the left-field second deck for the longest game-ending home run since MLB Statcast starting tracking in 2015.

Pirates 4, Cubs 3 – Peters shines as Pittsburgh Pirates beat Chicago Cubs 4-3
Dillon Peters keyed a solid performance by Pittsburgh’s bullpen and Kevin Newman had two hits to help the Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3. Peters pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of JT Brubaker and allowed one hit while running his season-opening scoreless streak to 10 1/3 innings over five appearances. Chicago lost for the fifth time in six games overall — even the day after it collected 23 hits during a historic romp. Ian Happ hit his 1st homer of the season for the Cubs.

MLB – White Sox put Eloy Jiménez on 10-day IL; likely out longer
The Chicago White Sox have placed outfielder Eloy Jiménez on the 10-day inured list with a right hamstring strain. The injury is expected to cause him to miss six to eight weeks. He is scheduled to have an extensive exam Monday in Chicago, with an update provided Tuesday when the White Sox open a seven-game homestand. Jiménez is hitting .222 with a home run and seven RBIs in 11 games this season. A ruptured left pectoral tendon limited him to 55 games last season.  Chicago now has eight players on the injured list.

MLB – Cubs RHP Alec Mills feeling good after rehab start
Whenever Alec Mills makes it back to the Chicago Cubs, he plans to be ready for whatever manager David Ross needs from him. Mills is rehabbing a low back strain that landed him on the 10-day injured list on opening day. The veteran right-hander pitched three innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, allowing three runs and eight hits.

Alex Nedeljkovic had 17 saves, Oskar Sundqvist and Tyler Bertuzzi each had a goal and assist and the Detroit Red Wings beat the New Jersey Devils 3-0. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Red Wings and came a day after they were blown out by the Pittsburgh Penguins 7-2. Sundqvist scored in the first period and Bertuzzi and Michael Rasmussen added late empty-net goals. New Jersey goaltender Andrew Hammond made 21 saves as the Devils lost their seventh straight game at home.

NASCAR – Sneaky Chastain gets Talladega win
Ross Chastain took the lead near the checkered flag at Talladega Superspeedway to steal his second career NASCAR Cup Series victory.  Chastain simply stayed in line over the final few laps as leader Erik Jones and reigning Cup champion Kyle Larson fought for the win. Larson made his attempt on the final lap and Jones moved for the defensive block.  Chastain just pointed his Chevrolet straight, slipped past the leaders and won for the second time in five races. Austin Dillon finished second for Richard Childress Racing in a 1-2 sweep for Chevrolet. Kyle Busch was third, followed by Larson and Martin Truex Jr.

Golf – PGA – Cantlay-Schauffele complete record win
Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele held off Sam Burns and Billy Horschel by two strokes in a record-setting, wire-to-wire victory in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Cantlay and Schauffele closed with an even-par-72 in the alternate-shot final round to finish at 29-under 259. That broke the tournament mark set by Kevin Kisner-Scott Brown and Jonas Blixt-Cameron Smith in 2017, the first year the event was played as a team event. Cantlay and Schauffele opened with a record 59 in best-ball play Thursday, and began Sunday at 29 under after shattering the 54-hole record of 23 under.

Golf – Champions – Parel gets playoff win
Scott Parel parred the first playoff hole to capture the ClubCorp Classic, his second PGA Tour Champions title. Parel two-putted for birdie on the par-5 18th hole for a 6-under 65 and won a three-man playoff over Steven Alker and Gene Sauers, who both went into the hazard on the closing hole and failed to make par.  Sauers birdied his last two holes in regulation for a 63.

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone went from Scrooge to Santa Claus in the eyes of Tigers fans on Thursday in Detroit.  Boone elected to intentionally walk Miguel Cabrera in the eighth inning, denying the Tigers designated hitter of a chance for his 3,000th career hit. The decision came with two runners on, two out and the Tigers clinging to a 1-0 lead. One batter later, Austin Meadows blooped a two-run double to put Detroit ahead by three in a 3-0 shutout of New York.
Former Yankee Michael Pineda picked up his first win as a Tiger, yielding three hits over five innings. Robbie Grossman doubled home Detroit’s first run off hard-luck loser David Mongomery, who allowed just two other hits while becoming the first Yankee to throw six innings this year.

Guardians 3, White Sox 0 – Naylor, Plesac lead Guardians to sweep of White Sox 6-3
Josh Naylor had two hits and two RBIs, continuing his comeback from a devastating leg injury and helping the Cleveland Guardians complete a series sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 6-3 victory. Cleveland took both games of a doubleheader on Wednesday against Chicago, which has lost four straight. Naylor hit an RBI single in the fifth and a run-scoring double in the seventh. He was activated Friday after suffering multiple fractures in his right leg during an outfield collision last June.

Pittsburgh starter Bryse Wilson allowed Rafael Ortega’s leadoff single in the first, then walked three straight batters. Jonathan Villar added a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead, and Seiya Suzuki had an RBI groundout in the second for a 3-0 edge. Vogelbach homered in the third, and Tsutsugo’s double made it 4-3 Pirates in the fifth.

Miguel Cabrera tries again for his 3,000th career hit when the Detroit Tigers take on Colorado at Comerica Park on Friday night. The 39-year-old star needs one more hit to become the 33rd major leaguer to reach the milestone and the first from Venezuela to do it. Cabrera is set to face a fellow Venezuelan, Rockies pitcher Antonio Senzatela, in the series opener. Cabrera went 0 for 3, striking out twice, and stayed at 2,999 hits in a 3-0 win over the Yankees on Thursday. He drew an intentional walk in the eighth inning, prompting loud booing and chanting from Detroit fans.

NBA – Bucks’ Middleton out at least 2 weeks with knee injury
Milwaukee Bucks forward Khris Middleton is expected to miss at least two weeks after injuring his left knee Wednesday night in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series with the Chicago Bulls. The Bucks announced Thursday night that the three-time All-Star had undergone an MRI earlier that day and that they would offer their next status update on him in “approximately two weeks.” That likely knocks him out at least for the rest of the Bucks-Bulls series. Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said after he Bucks’ 114-110 loss Wednesday that Middleton had a sprained medial collateral ligament.

Kings 4, Blackhawks 1 – Kings defeat Blackhawks 4-1, move closer to a playoff spot
Phillip Danault scored for the fifth straight game and the Los Angeles Kings moved closer to wrapping up a playoff spot with a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. Danault opened the scoring in the first period with his 26th goal of the season. He is the first Kings player since Marián Gáborík in 2014 to have a goal in five straight games. Anze Kopitar, Andreas Athanasiou and Trevor Moore also scored for Los Angeles, which has won four of its last five. The Kings are five points ahead of Vegas for third place in the Pacific Division. Patrick Kane scored for Chicago, which has lost nine of its last 11. It was the 430th career goal for Kane, which moves him past Bill Guerin into sixth among U.S.-born skaters in NHL history.

Golf – Cantlay-Schauffele team leads in Louisiana
Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele are the first-round leaders at the Zurich Classic near New Orleans.  Cantlay holed a 25-foot eagle putt early and chipped in from 40 feet for birdie late. Schauffele contributed six birdies of his own, and their three straight birdies to close gave them a 13-under 59 in fourballs.  It set a tournament record since the Zurich Classic switched to team play in 2017, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup partners were willing to claim a piece of golf’s magic number. They had a one-shot lead over the team of Matthew NeSmith and Taylor Moore.

Boxing – Tyson punch on plane leads to investigation
Authorities have begun an investigation after former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson was recorded on video punching a fellow passenger on board a plane at San Francisco International Airport. The video was first shared by TMZ and shows Tyson leaning over the back of his seat repeatedly striking the unidentified man in the head, drawing blood. Prior to the physical altercation, the man is seen on the video standing over Tyson’s seat, waving his arms and talking animatedly while the former boxer sits quietly.

NASSAR – 13 Nassar victims seeking $130M from FBI over bungled probe
Thirteen sexual assault victims are seeking $10 million each from the FBI. They claim a bungled investigation by federal agents led to more abuse by the sports doctor. It’s an effort to make the government responsible for assaults that occurred after 2015. The Justice Department’s inspector general concluded last year that the FBI made fundamental errors when it became aware of allegations against Dr. Larry Nassar. He was a Michigan State University sports doctor as well as a doctor at USA Gymnastics.

FIFA – FedEx Field in Maryland drops out as 2026 World Cup site
FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, has dropped out of bidding to host games at the 2026 World Cup, and the Washington area has merged its campaign with Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium. The joint bid would have a fan festival on the District of Columbia’s National Mall. Seventeen U.S. stadiums in 16 areas remain in the bidding for the World Cup, and three cities each in Canada and Mexico are bidding. The bid plan envisioned 16 total sites across the three nations, and FIFA targeted mid-June for announcing site selections.

NFL – Pro Football Hall of Fame expands opportunities for seniors
Senior candidates will have more opportunities to be selected for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the next three years. The hall’s Board of Trustees has approved several changes to the bylaws governing the selection of Hall of Fame enshrinees. In the past, only one player who no longer was in the modern-era category could be voted into the shrine annually. But for the 2023-2025 classes, a maximum of three per year could be chosen by the selection committee. A deep backlog of senior candidates led to the revision.

NFL – Texas woman drops lawsuit claiming Jerry Jones is her father
A 25-year-old Texas woman who sued Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, alleging he is her biological father, has dropped her lawsuit. The Dallas Morning News reports that Alexandra Davis said in court papers filed Wednesday that she now wants genetic testing to verify her claim. Jones’ attorneys had asked in court filings that the suit be dismissed but did not address the paternity claim. The lawsuit alleged that Jones had a relationship with Davis’ mother, Cynthia Davis, who was working as a ticket counter agent for American Airlines in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the time. Alexandra Davis was born in 1996.

JUCO – Multiple players suspended after JUCO pitcher levels batter
The North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference has handed out a long list of suspensions after a pitcher leveled a batter after giving up a home run. Weatherford College pitcher Owen Woodward was suspended four games for the tackle. North Central Texas College hitter Josh Phillips was suspended two games because he was ejected for taunting. Online video showed Phillips rounding third and Woodward charging off the mound and smashing into him. Players from both teams charged onto the field. Weatherford officials have said Woodward could be expelled for his hit.

José Ramírez hit his second grand slam of the season in an 11-1 win, then had an RBI double in a 2-1 victory as the Cleveland Guardians swept a doubleheader from the Chicago White Sox. Ramírez, who signed a seven-year, $141 million contract last week, leads the majors with 20 RBIs. The Guardians earned their initial home wins under their new name.

Francisco Mejia homered and drove in three runs to help the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Chicago Cubs 8-2 in a game that was called after 5 1/2 innings due to rain. First pitch was moved up 70 minutes because rain was forecast for later on a chilly evening. The game was then delayed in the middle of the sixth inning when the rain intensified. It was called about an hour later. Cubs rookie Seiya Suzuki walked in the fifth to reach base for the 12th straight game at the start of his career, breaking a team record held by two players — Art Williams in 1902 and Tony Taylor in 1958.

NHL – Red Wings Zamboni driver, a fan favorite, sues over firing
A popular Zamboni driver for the Detroit Red Wings says he was dismissed for urinating in a drain. Al Sobotka filed a discrimination lawsuit this week against Olympia Entertainment, two months after he was fired. Sobotka worked for the Red Wings for 51 years. His lawyer says the 68-year-old Sobotka has a health condition that causes him to frequently urinate. Sobotka couldn’t get to a restroom so he urinated in a drain that carries ice runoff from the Zamboni machines at Little Caesars Arena. Someone saw him and apparently reported it in February. Sobotka says he was “heartbroken” over his firing. There was no immediate comment from Olympia Entertainment.

NCAABKB – Big Ten basketball tournaments to make stop in Minneapolis
The Big Ten basketball tournaments are coming to Minneapolis. The conference says the women’s tournament will be held at Target Center in 2023 and 2024. The men’s tournament will be played there in 2024. All 14 teams are automatic entrants in both events. Chicago will host the men’s tournament next year to make up for 2021 when the event was shifted to Indianapolis due to COVID-19 restrictions. Minneapolis will be the fifth different host on the men’s side. The women’s tournament will move out of Indianapolis for the first time since 2015.

NCAAMBKB – Wright resigns as Villanova coach, Neptune takes over
Jay Wright shocked college basketball Wednesday night with his immediate resignation at Villanova, the Big East program he led to two national championships and four Final Fours in a Hall of Fame career. The 60-year-old Wright guided Villanova to titles in 2016 and 2018 and just led the Wildcats to the Final Four, where they lost to national champion Kansas. He went 520-197 in 21 seasons at the school and 642-282 overall, also coaching Hofstra from 1994–2001. Kyle Neptune, who served on the Villanova coaching staff before accepting the head coaching position at Fordham in 2021, returned to replace Wright. Wright will remain at Villanova and stay involved in fundraising, advising, education and more.

WNBA – 2 months after Griner’s arrest, mystery surrounds her case
WNBA All-Star and two-time Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner is easily the most prominent American citizen known to be jailed by a foreign government. Yet as a crucial hearing approaches next month in Russia, the case against Griner remains shrouded in mystery. Little clarity has come from Russian prosecutors since she was detained in February. Only measured public statements have come from the U.S. government as it seeks more information about the circumstances of her detention. An otherwise mundane drug case features storylines of race and gender, professional athletics, geopolitics and international criminal justice.

Tennis – Wimbledon bans players from Russia, Belarus over Ukraine war
Russian and Belarusian tennis players have been banned from competing at this year’s Wimbledon tournament because of the war in Ukraine. The All England Club’s move makes the grass-court Grand Slam tournament in southwest London the first top-level tennis event to bar players from Russia and Belarus. Among those affected are second-ranked Daniil Medvedev. He won last year’s U.S. Open and was this year’s Australian Open runner-up. He was briefly ranked No. 1 in the world this year. Another player affected is Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. Azarenka is a two-time Australian Open champion and also a former No. 1.

NFL – Haskins apparently ran out of gas before being fatally hit
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins apparently ran out of gas and was returning to his vehicle when he was fatally struck by a dump truck earlier this month in Florida. The Florida Highway Patrol released a recording Wednesday of a 911 call Haskins’ wife Kalabrya (Gondrezick) made to the agency shortly after the April 9 accident. Calling from Pittsburgh and unaware of the accident, she told the dispatcher that Haskins had called her to say he had run out of gas and would call her back. When the former Ohio State star didn’t and she couldn’t reach him, she called 911. The accident report released Wednesday says witnesses told investigators Haskins was trying to cross the highway when he went into the path of the dump truck. The truck knocked him into the path of a car, which also struck him.
