Jordan Jensen sat down with Taylor Misel, head coach of the St. Joe wrestling program, to discuss the historic season that led to Misel winning the Division 2 Coach of the Year award.

This season, to put it lightly, was a historic season for St. Joe wrestling. Some of the numerous school records that were broken include:

-Elite Eight finish at team state

-Team Academic All-Sate Honors

-Most individual state qualifiers (8)

-First freshman all-state wrestler: Landon Thomas

-First female state qualifier: Maya Milletics

Coyotes 9, Red Wings 2 – Schmaltz's 4 points help Coyotes waltz past Red Wings, 9-2

Nick Schmaltz followed his franchise-record seven-point game with two goals and two assists as the Arizona Coyotes overwhelmed the Detroit Red Wings 9-2 on Tuesday. Schmaltz had two goals and five assists in an 8-5 victory over Ottawa on Saturday. His 11 points in two games is also a franchise record. Jakob Chychrun and Nick Ritchie each had two goals and an assist for the Coyotes, who have won three straight for the first time this season. Jakub Vrana scored in his season debut for the Red Wings. Robby Fabbri also had a goal and Alex Nedeljkovic made 20 saves before being pulled.

Blackhawks 8, Ducks 3 – Kane, Strome shine as Blackhawks pound Ducks 8-3

Patrick Kane had a goal and five primary assists for a career-high six points, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the banged-up Anaheim Ducks 8-3. Dylan Strome had three goals and an assist and Alex DeBrincat finished with a goal and three assists. Jonathan Toews, Brandon Hagel and Ryan Carpenter also scored as the Blackhawks turned a fast start into their third win in nine games. Anaheim opened a five-game trip with its sixth consecutive loss to Chicago. Trevor Zegras scored a power-play goal for Anaheim, and Jakob Silfverberg and Adam Henrique also scored.

Sixers 121, Bulls 106 – Embiid has 43 points, 14 rebounds; 76ers thump Bulls 121-106

Joel Embiid had 43 points and 14 rebounds, and the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Chicago Bulls 121-106 in a showdown between two of the Eastern Conference’s top teams headed in opposite directions. James Harden added 16 points and 14 assists, and Tyrese Maxey added 17 points for the 76ers, who have won six of seven and stayed perfect with Harden in the lineup. Embiid, the league’s leading scorer, made 15 of 27 field goals and 12 of 16 free throws. Embiid scored at least 40 points for the 10th time this season while upping his season average to 29.7 points per contest.

NFL – Aaron Rodgers says he will remain with Packers next season

Aaron Rodgers is planning to come back to the Green Bay Packers for an 18th season, a move that keeps the reigning MVP quarterback off the trade market and answers the question that had dominated NFL offseason discussions. NFL Network reported that the 38-year-old Rodgers had agreed to a four-year, $200 million contract that includes $153 million in guaranteed money. Rodgers said any reports of the contract terms are not accurate and that he has not signed a deal yet. His decision comes nearly a month after he won his second straight MVP award. The four-time MVP quarterback has spent his entire career in Green Bay.

NFL – Seahawks agree to trade Russell Wilson to Denver

Two people familiar with the negotiations tell The Associated Press that the Seattle Seahawks have agreed to trade star quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a package of draft picks and players. Wilson is a nine-time Pro Bowler who had just one losing season in Seattle. That was last year when he fractured the middle finger of his throwing hand. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade can not become official until March 16.

This week's Mid-West Family Player of the Week is Elise DeWeerd, a senior from St.Joseph Michigan Lutheran High School and member of the girls varsity basketball team.

In last weeks district championship game against River Valley, Elise led the Titans with 11 points, including 1 3-pointer, grabbed 3 rebounds and steals as well to help lead the Titans to back-to-back district championships.

Elise is known for many things on the court, but a few things stand out the most; she is incredibly accurate from behind the arc, as just 2 weeks ago she drained 4 3-pointers in ML's 38-6 win over New Buffalo, she plays a very aggressive and swarming defense, and always seems to be even-keeled no matter the situation.

After graduation this spring, Elise plans to attend Calvin College to study Graphic Design.

Elise and the Titans play in the Regional semi-final game against Gobles on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:00 PM at Martin High School, you can listen to that game live on 94.9 WJSM.

Cade Cunningham had 28 points and 10 assists, lifting the Detroit Pistons to a 113-110 overtime win over the Atlanta Hawks. Jerami Grant scored 23 and reserve Marvin Bagley had 19 points for the Pistons, who have won a season-high three straight and six of their last eight games. Atlanta’s Bogdan Bogdanovic had 22 points before fouling out late in regulation and Trae Young had 14 points and 12 assists. The playoff-hopeful Hawks had chances to win late in regulation and to extend the game to another overtime.

NCAAMBKB – Michigan's Juwan Howard returns, has meetings with players

Juwan Howard has resumed his role as Michigan’s basketball coach after serving a five-game suspension for hitting a Wisconsin assistant in the head. Howard met individually with each player Monday. The Wolverines are on the NCAA Tournament bubble with a 17-13 record overall and 11-9 mark in the Big Ten. Michigan closed the regular season with a win over then-No. 23 Ohio State on the road Sunday. Howard will be back on the sideline Thursday in Indianapolis, leading the eighth-seeded Wolverines against ninth-seeded Indiana in the conference tournament quarterfinals.

NCAAMBKB – Gonzaga remains atop AP Top 25; Tennessee cracks top 10

Gonzaga, Arizona and reigning national champion Baylor remained atop The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll. Monday's poll also saw Tennessee crack the top 10 and North Carolina return to the poll at No. 25. Mark Few’s Bulldogs claimed 52 of 61 first-place votes to hold the No. 1 ranking for the fourth straight week and eighth time this season going back to the preseason poll. Tennessee jumped into a tie for No. 9 for its first top-10 appearance this year. Colorado State joined UNC as the week's new additions. Ohio State and Alabama fell out from last week's poll.

NCAAMBKB – WMU Head Coach Clayton Bates steps down

Western Michigan University Head Coach Clayton Bates has officially stepped down as head coach of the Broncos men's basketball team.  Bates went 13-39 in his two seasons as Western’s head coach, during which the Broncos went 8-28 in the Mid-American Conference.  The Broncos finished last in the MAC this past season and did not qualify for the MAC Tournament.

NHL – NHL suspends agreement with Russia-based KHL

The NHL has suspended its dealings with the Russia-based KHL. The NHL told its teams to cease contact with KHL counterparts and Russia-based agents as part of the suspension of the memorandum of understanding between the leagues. The move could make it more difficult for NHL teams to sign players from the KHL. They can continue to communicate with North American agents certified by the NHL Players' Association.

Lakeshore has a long, storied history of excellence when it comes to wrestling, and this year was no different.

Over the weekend, Zam Thompson, Aaron Lucio, and Micah Hanau each brought home 1st place in their respected weight class.

Zam, a senior at Lakeshore, competed in the 145lb. weight class, and won his first state title.

Micah, also a senior at Lakeshore, competed in the 152lb. weight class, and won his second state title (2020).

Aaron, just a junior at Lakeshore, competed in the 135lb weight class, won his first state title and finished off an undefeated season after finishing 2nd in the state in 2021, and 3rd in 2020.
