Capitals 2, Red Wings 0 – Fucale posts shutout in NHL debut, Capitals blank Red Wings

Zach Fucale became the first goaltender in Capitals history to post a shutout in his NHL debut, stopping 21 shots as Washington beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-0. Dmitry Orlov and Lars Eller scored 10 seconds apart in the first period as the Capitals ended Detroit’s three-game win streak. The 26-year-old Fucale was picked by Montreal in the second round of the 2013 draft. He was 3-0-2 this season for Hershey before the Capitals called him up this week from the minors.

Dolphins 22, Ravens 10 – A stunner: Miami wins 2nd straight, tops Ravens 22-10

Xavien Howard forced a fumble and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown, Tua Tagovailoa came off the bench and capped his night with a 1-yard sneak for a score with 2:19 left and the Miami Dolphins stunned the Baltimore Ravens 22-10 on Thursday night. Tagovailoa threw for 158 yards. He relieved Jacoby Brissett, who passed for 156 yards before needing to depart in the third quarter with an injured right knee. Baltimore’s streak of 51 consecutive regular-season games with at least 14 points came to an end.

NFL – Steelers not getting ahead of themselves against 0-8 Lions

The Pittsburgh Steelers say they're taking nothing for granted when they face winless Detroit. The Steelers are riding a four-game winning streak following a 1-3 start that has thrust them into contention in the AFC North. Despite his team's surge, Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says the Steelers know they have a long way to go. Detroit is the NFL's last winless team at 0-8. The Lions are hopeful veteran left tackle Taylor Decker can make his 2021 debut. Decker missed the first two months of the season due to a finger injury. The Lions are seeking their first win in Pittsburgh since 1955.

NFL – Superman II: Panthers bring QB Cam Newton back home

Cam Newton is returning to the franchise that drafted him No. 1 overall in 2011.  The team signed Newton to a one-year contract after starter Sam Darnold suffered an incomplete fracture of his shoulder blade in last week’s 24-6 loss to the New England Patriots. Panthers coach Matt Rhule said P.J. Walker will start on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Matt Barkley, signed off the Tennessee Titans practice squad, is slated to be his backup. Newton passed his physical exam and his playing status for this week will depend on how quickly he picks up the team's offense. He's expected to compete for a starting job beginning next week.’

NFL – Beckham joins Rams

Odell Beckham Jr. has agreed to a one-year deal with the Rams. The Browns released Beckham on Monday midway through his third season in Cleveland. Beckham elected to join NFL yards passing leader Matthew Stafford in one of the league’s most productive passing offenses.

NFL – Ruggs lawyers: Witness says firefighting slow in fatal crash

Henry Ruggs’ lawyers are telling a judge they found a witness who says firefighters were slow to extinguish a vehicle fire sparked by a deadly crash that authorities blame on the former Raiders wide receiver. Prosecutors allege Ruggs was driving drunk at speeds up to 156 mph before the crash in Las Vegas, killing another driver. The Raiders immediately released Ruggs, who’s under house arrest with strict conditions.

This week's Mid-West Family Player of the Week is Arie Hackett, a senior at Bridgman High School.

Arie just finished an amazing senior Cross Country season where she finished 1st in both the River Valley and Kalamazoo Christian Invites, and finished 2nd at the Regional Cross Country Meet.

At the MHSAA State Tournament, Arie placed 64th individually and helped the team to an 18th place finish.

Arie was recognized for her great season by being named first team all-conference, all-region, and academic all-state.

For as how amazing an athlete Arie is, you can argue that she actually shine's brightest in the classroom where she carries a 4.08 GPA, is a member of the Bridgman DECA Club, and is a part of the peer mentoring program, where she helps teach Special-Ed students Algebra-2.

On top of Cross Country, Arie is also a member of the Bridgman Varsity Basketball and Softball teams.

Next year, Arie will continue both her education and softball career at Indiana Wesleyan University where she plans to study Secondary Education.

#6 Michigan 88, Buffalo 76 – Dickinson-led No. 6 Michigan beats Buffalo 88-76 in opener

Hunter Dickinson had 27 points to help No. 6 Michigan open with an 88-76 win over Buffalo on Wednesday night. The Wolverines started strong in their season opener, leading by as much as 21 points in the first half and going ahead 51-36 at halftime. But Michigan came out flat in the second half, allowing Buffalo to cut the deficit to five points with five-plus minutes left. Caleb Houstan helped Michigan pull away, making a 3-pointer to give the Wolverines a 15-point lead late in the game. Buffalo’s Jeenathan Williams scored a career-high 32 points.

WMU 76, Hope 58 – Norman Jr. scores 23 to lead W. Michigan over Hope 76-58

Lamar Norman Jr. had a career-high 23 points as Western Michigan topped Hope College 76-58 in a season opener. Markeese Hastings had 10 rebounds for Western Michigan.  Jeff Bikus had 13 points to lead NCAA Division III Hope College.

Jerami Grant scored a season-high 35 points to help the Detroit Pistons beat the Houston Rockets 112-104 on Wednesday night in a matchup of two of the worst teams in the NBA. Grant shot 12 of 23 from the field, including 4 of 9 from 3-point range. Detroit improved to 2-8, and Houston dropped to 1-10. The meeting was the first between the top two picks in the July draft. Cade Cunningham, Detroit’s choice as the No. 1 pick, had 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting. Houston’s Jalen Green, the No. 2 pick, had 23 points on 8-of-20 shooting.

Bulls 117, Mavericks 107 – Ball, LaVine lead Bulls past Mavericks 117-107

Zach LaVine scored 23 points and Lonzo Ball made seven of Chicago’s 15 3-pointers, helping the Bulls top the Dallas Mavericks 117-107. Five players scored in double figures for Chicago during its second straight victory. Nikola Vucevic had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and DeMar DeRozan finished with 17 points. Dallas had won three straight and four of five overall, but it couldn’t keep up with LaVine and the Bulls in the second half. Kristaps Porzingis had 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Mavericks, and Luka Doncic finished with 20 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.

Nuggets 101, Pacers 98 – Barton scores 30, Nuggets beat Pacers 101-98 without Jokic

Will Barton scored a season-high 30 points, helping to make up for the absence of suspended star Nikola Jokic as the Denver Nuggets hung on to beat the Indiana Pacers 101-98. Zeke Nnaji added 19 points and Jeff Green and Bones Hyland had 12 apiece for the Nuggets, who have won four straight and six of seven. Malcolm Brogdon had 25 points to lead the Pacers. Domantas Sabonis added 20 points and 19 rebounds.

NHL – Blackhawks F Hagel to miss 2 weeks with shoulder injury

Chicago Blackhawks forward Brandon Hagel is expected to miss two weeks with a left shoulder injury. Hagel got hurt in the third period of Sunday night’s 2-1 overtime victory against Nashville. The Blackhawks also assigned defenseman Wyatt Kalynuk to Rockford of the AHL. Kalynuk likely is working on his conditioning after being sidelined by a right ankle sprain.

Ochai Agbaji scored a career-high 29 points and No. 3 Kansas beat Michigan State 87-74 at the Champions Classic on the opening night of college basketball. Remy Martin added 15 points and David McCormack had 10 for the Jayhawks, who returned four starters from last season’s squad that lost to USC in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks were missing forward Jalen Wilson, who was suspended last week for the first three regular season games after he was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving last month. A.J. Hoggard scored 17 points and Julius Marble added 13 for the Spartans.

Mizzou 78, CMU 68 – Missouri pulls away late to beat Central Michigan 78-68

Javon Pickett scored 18 points and led five in double figures as Missouri pulled away late to beat Central Michigan 78-68 in the season opener for both teams. Jermaine Jackson Jr. had 19 points and five assists to lead Central Michigan. It was the debut for Chippewas’ coach Tony Barbee, who spent the previous 7 seasons on Kentucky's staff.

Trayce Jackson-Davis scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Xavier Johnson added 14 points to lead Indiana past Eastern Michigan 68-62. Mike Woodson won his first game as the Hoosiers new coach. Noah Farrakhan had 18 points and three 3-pointers to lead Eastern Michigan in coach Stan Heath’s debut.

WMU 45, Akron 40 – Western Michigan rallies late, tops Akron 45-40

Sean Tyler scored three touchdowns — one receiving, one rushing and the final one on a 96-yard kickoff return — and Kaleb Elleby threw two touchdown passes, including a 45-yarder to Corey Crooms with a minute left to play, to help Western Michigan escape with a 45-40 victory over Akron. Tyler’s kickoff-return TD put the Broncos up 31-17 in the third quarter and Elleby added a 1-yard TD run to make it 38-24 with 13:39 remaining in the game. Akron rallied to take a 40-38 lead on Zach Gibson’s 11-yard TD pass to Konata Mumpfield, a 24-yard, pick-6 by defensive lineman Zach Morton and a 39-yard field goal by Cory Smigel with 2:22 left to play. Eleby needed just six plays to deliver the game-winning toss to Crooms.

Ohio 34, EMU 26 – Rourke's 3 TD passes, strong ground game lead Ohio past EMU

Kurtis Rourke threw three touchdown passes, Ohio gained 265 yards on the ground, and the Bobcats defeated Eastern Michigan 34-26. Ben Bryant of Eastern Michigan completed 41 of 57 passes for 354 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

NCAAFB – Ohio St moves into CFP position; Cincinnati 5th in rankings

No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 Ohio State and No. 5 Cincinnati all moved up one spot behind No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Alabama in the second College Football Playoff rankings. Two Southeastern Conference teams sat atop the ranking for a second straight week, but after Michigan State lost last weekend at least one spot in the top four was certain to change. The committee simply bumped up the Ducks, Buckeyes and Bearcats and dropped Michigan State to No. 7 behind No. 6 Michigan.

Steelers 29, Bears 27 – Boswell's late field goal lifts Steelers past Bears 29-27

Chris Boswell's 40-yard field goal with 26 seconds left lifted the Pittsburgh Steelers past the Chicago Bears 29-27. The Steelers needed the late rally after Chicago scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to take the lead. Pittsburgh improved to 5-3. The Steelers have won 20 straight home games on “Monday Night Football.” Pittsburgh appeared to have the game well in hand before a fumbled punt return led to a Bears touchdown. Justin Fields then hit Darnell Mooney to put the Bears ahead with 1:46 to play. Ben Roethlisberger responded with the 50th game-winning drive of his 18-year career.

NFL – Odell Beckham Jr. waived by Browns, can be claimed

Odell Beckham Jr. is up for grabs. The challenging wide receiver was formally waived by the Cleveland Browns and can now be taken by any NFL team that wants him at a $7.25 million price tag for the rest of this season. Beckham essentially forced his exit last week from the Browns, who traded for him 2 ½ years ago but reached a point where they wanted out of the relationship as badly as he did. The 29-year-old Beckham can be claimed on waivers. The winless Detroit Lions get first crack at the three-time Pro Bowler.  Beckham has said he would only report to a team that is in contention of going to the playoffs.

Bulls 118, Nets 95 – Bulls pull away in 4th, win 118-95 to snap Nets' 5-game run

DeMar DeRozan scored 28 points, Zach LaVine added 24 and the Chicago Bulls used a 42-point fourth quarter to pull away for a 118-95 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. Rookie Ayo Dosumnu had 15 points and played a key role in the late rally as Chicago snapped a two-game losing streak. Kevin Durant, who entered as the NBA’s leading scorer with a 28.6 average, had 38 points but Brooklyn had its five-game winning streak snapped. LaMarcus Aldridge added 19. The Nets had played Sunday in Toronto and appeared to run out of gas late.

Nebraska is bringing back coach Scott Frost in 2022 under a restructured contract that cuts his salary from $5 million to $4 million. The Cornhuskers are 15-27 in four years under Frost and his future has been the subject of speculation. The Huskers are 3-7 this season and last in the Big Ten West. Frost announced he has fired offensive coordinator Matt Lubick, offensive line coach Greg Austin, running backs coach Ryan Held and quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco.

Red Wings 5, Golden Knights 2 – Suter, Bertuzzi lead Red Wings to 5-2 win over Vegas

Pius Suter and Tyler Bertuzzi each had a goal and an assist, and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Vegas Golden Knights 5-2. Robby Fabbri, Lucas Raymond and Vladislav Namestnikov also scored for the Red Wings. Sam Gagnerm, Filip Hronek and Nick Leddy each had two assists, and Thomas Greiss stopped 38 shots. Nicolas Roy had a goal and an assist, and Jonathan Marchessault also scored for the Golden Knights. Laurent Brossoit finished with 25 saves. After Roy gave Vegas the lead 3:48 into the game with his second of the season, Detroit scored the next four goals to take control.

Blackhawks 2, Predators 1 – DeBrincat scores in OT, Blackhawks win 2-1 in King's debut

Alex DeBrincat scored 37 seconds into overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 2-1 win over the Nashville Predators in Derek King’s NHL coaching debut. DeBrincat finished a 2-on-1 break and give-and-go to lift the Blackhawks to just their second win. After scoring, DeBrincat scooped the puck from the back of the net, presumably for King. King was promoted from the Blackhawks' top minor league club, Rockford of the AHL, to Chicago’s interim coach after Jeremy Colliton was fired on Saturday following a 1-9-2 start. Chicago’s Brandon Hagel and Nashville’s Alexandre Carrier scored 1:50 apart in the second period for the only goals in regulation.

NHL – King's fresh voice will try to right reeling Blackhawks

Derek King takes over as the interim coach of the reeling Chicago Blackhawks after Jeremy Colliton was fired on Saturday. King is charged with hitting the reset button after the team’s 1-9-2 start. The 54-year-old King has been the head coach at Rockford in the American Hockey League since 2018 following a productive 14-year NHL playing career that included 261 goals and 612 points with four teams.

NFL – Steelers look to keep Monday dominance going vs Bears

The Pittsburgh Steelers will try to push their home winning streak on Monday nights to 20 when they host Chicago. The Steelers haven't lost in Pittsburgh on Monday night since 1991. The Bears have won each of their last three meetings with the Steelers but come to Pittsburgh struggling. Chicago has dropped three consecutive games, all by double digits. The Steelers have won three in a row following a 1-3 start to climb out of last place in the AFC North.

Pacers 94, Kings 91 – Pacers hold off Kings for first win in Sacramento since 2018

Caris LeVert scored 22 points and the Indiana Pacers held on after blowing a 15-point lead, beating the Sacramento Kings 94-91. Domontas Sabonis had 17 points and 10 rebounds to help Indiana to its first win in Sacramento since 2018. T.J. McConnell added 17 points and Chris Duarte scored 15. Harrison Barnes scored 22 points for the Kings. De’Aaron Fox, Tyrese Haliburton and Buddy Hield scored 17 apiece.
