Rays 5, Tigers 2 – Rays beat Tigers 5-2, extend AL East lead to 8 1/2 games

Yandy Díaz hit a leadoff home run and Mike Zunino later connected, reliever Dietrich Enns pitched four solid innings and the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2. The Rays lead second place Boston and Toronto by 8 1/2 games. The fourth-place New York Yankees are nine back. Tampa Bay slugger Nelson Cruz left the game in the sixth with a bruised right forearm. He hit by a pitch on the arm during the first inning. Enns gave up one run and three hits as six Tampa Bay pitchers combined on a six-hitter.

Angels 9, White Sox 3 – Cobb’s 5 scoreless IP in return lead Angels over White Sox

Alex Cobb pitched five scoreless innings, Luis Rengifo and Jose Rojas hit home runs, and the Los Angeles Angels coasted to a 9-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. Cobb was activated from the 10-day injured list after suffering right wrist inflammation and allowed two hits in his first start since July 23. The Angels won their second consecutive game. The AL Central-leading White Sox lost for the fifth time in eight games. The White Sox have dropped six consecutive series against the Angels dating to 2016, and they’re 4-15 in their last 19 games against them.

Phillies 17, Cubs 8 – Harper homers, rallies Phils from 7 down in 17-8 win vs Cubs

Bryce Harper had three hits, drove a three-run homer and had four RBIs to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 17-8 win over the Chicago Cubs. Harper doubled to start a seven-run, game-tying rally in the fourth inning, brought in the go-ahead run in the sixth and sealed the win with a homer in the seventh. Each team scored seven runs in an inning. The Cubs took a 7-0 lead in the third inning against a pair of relievers in a bullpen game. Patrick Wisdom had a two-run double and Matt Duffy hit a three-run homer for the Cubs.

MLB – Seattle Mariners land All-Star Game earlier than expected

The Seattle Mariners were formally revealed as hosts of the 2023 Major League Baseball All-Star Game after ramping up a bid initially targeting 2024 or later. The announcement was made inside the Space Needle with Hall of Famers Ken Griffey Jr. and Edgar Martinez looking on. Seattle first hosted the game in 1979. Twenty-two years later it was back in 2001. And now, 22 years later, it'll be back again in 2023. The Mariners quickly kicked the bid process into gear when MLB asked earlier this year if 2023 was a possibility. The 2022 game will be at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Washington 30, Giants 29 – Late flag lifts WFT over Giants

Dustin Hopkins connected on his second attempt at a game-winning field goal to give Washington a 30-29 win over the New York Giants. Hopkins missed from 48 yards out as time expired, but the play was called back on an offside call on Giants defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence. Taylor Heinicke threw for 336 yards and two touchdowns for WFT, which is 1-1.

Tigers 4, Brewers 1 – Garneau, Tigers complete 2-game sweep of contending Brewers

Dustin Garneau homered and drove in two runs, rookie Matt Manning combined with the bullpen on a three-hitter and the Detroit Tigers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-1 to complete a two-game sweep. Milwaukee’s magic number to clinch the NL Central remained at five after they dropped a pair to the Tigers following a five-game winning streak. Garneau knocked in the go-ahead run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly. He lofted his fourth homer with two out in the seventh. Derek Hill, who drove in the lone run in Detroit’s 1-0, 11-inning victory over Milwaukee on Tuesday, supplied an RBI triple. Miguel Cabrera added a run-scoring double.

Phillies 6, Cubs 5 – Phillies win wild one on passed ball in 9th; top Cubs 6-5

Andrew Knapp scored on a passed ball in the ninth inning to bolster the Philadelphia Phillies’ tenuous playoff push with a 6-5 win over the Chicago Cubs. The Phillies bullpen blew it in the late innings. Robinson Chirinos hit a two-run homer off Jose Alvarado that tied it 4-all in the eighth. Matt Duffy hit a solo shot off Ian Kennedy in the ninth and tied it at 5. J.T. Realmuto led off the eighth inning with his 15th homer of the season in a topsy-turvy final two innings for a club clinging to playoff aspirations.

Angels 3, White Sox 2 – Marsh homers off Kopech in 8th, Angels top White Sox 3-2

Brandon Marsh hit a tiebreaking solo homer off Michael Kopech in the eighth inning, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2. Marsh drove a 101 mph, full-count fastball from Kopech over the wall in left-center for his second homer. Mike Mayers struck out the side in the seventh for the win. Steve Cishek worked out of a jam in the eighth before Raisel Iglesias finished for his 32nd save. Yoán Moncada homered for AL Central-leading Chicago, which had won three of four.

NFL – Dalton ready to meet former team when Bears host Bengals

Andy Dalton remembers how strange it felt playing against the Bengals. The fact the game was in Cincinnati made it that much more emotional for the veteran quarterback. Dalton goes against the Bengals for the second time in as many years when they visit the Chicago Bears on Sunday. And this one figures to be a little less emotional than when he faced them last season as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. The Bears are looking to bounce back from a season-opening, 34-14 loss to the Rams in Los Angeles. Dalton did little to quiet the calls for prized rookie Justin Fields in that one.

NFL – Fisher eager to move beyond Achilles injury, play for Colts

Eric Fisher's life changed almost as soon he felt the pain in his left foot during the AFC championship game. He agonized about his inability to play in the Super Bowl. After eight seasons in Kansas City, he was released in March as a cost-cutting move and spent the next two months uncertain about his future. In May, he finally signed with the Indianapolis Colts. And now, following nearly eight months of rehab, the two-time Pro Bowl left tackle appears to be nearing a return.  Fisher was the number one overall pick out of Central Michigan.

Tigers 1, Brewers 0 – F/11 – Hill hits game-winning double in 11th, Tigers beat Brewers

Derek Hill hit a leadoff RBI double in the 11th inning, giving the Detroit Tigers a 1-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers loaded the bases with one out against Bryan Garcia (2-1) in the 11th before Christian Yelich grounded into an inning-ending double play. Hill fell behind 0-2 while trying to bunt Victor Reyes to third, then lined Hunter Strickland’s next pitch into right-center for a game-winning double. The loss ended Milwaukee’s five-game win streak.

Cubs 6, Phillies 3 – Wisdom, Rivas homer as Cubs beat fading Phillies 6-3

Patrick Wisdom and Alfonso Rivas hit back-to-back homers for the Chicago Cubs in a 6-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies have lost six of seven games. Wilson Contreras led off the fifth inning with a single, Wisdom hit his 26th homer of the year, and Rivas followed with the first of his big league career. It was 3-1 on 12 pitches. Adrian Sampson gave up two runs in five innings for the win. The Phillies have not made the playoffs since 2011.

White Sox 9, Angels 3 – Sheets, White Sox beat Angels 9-3 in Maddon's Chicago return

Rookie Gavin Sheets hit a long three-run homer and had four RBIs in his first three-hit game, and the White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 9-3 in Joe Maddon’s first game back in Chicago. Sheets hit a go-ahead single in the second inning off Packy Naughton and made it 6-1 with a three-run homer in the third. He narrowly missed a second home run when he doubled to the right-field wall in the fifth. Maddon managed the Cubs for five years, leading them to a World Series title in 2016 that ended the team’s 108-year championship drought.

MLB – AP source: Seattle Mariners to host 2023 MLB All-Star Game

A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press that the Seattle Mariners will host baseball’s 2023 All-Star Game at T-Mobile Park. The team announced a news conference for Thursday at Seattle’s Space Needle with baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because the subject was not announced, said the subject was the 2023 All-Star Game. Seattle will host the All-Stars for the third time. The ballpark was the site of the American League’s 4-1 victory in 2001. The 1979 All-Star Game was at the old Kingdome.

MLB – White Sox reinstate Giolito, Anderson in flurry of moves

The AL-Central leading Chicago White Sox have reinstated right-hander Lucas Giolito and All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson from the 10-day injured list. Both were in the lineup for Tuesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Angels. Giolito was set to take the mound for the first time since Aug. 31, when he suffered a strained left hamstring against Pittsburgh. He’s 9-9 with a 3.69 ERA this season. Anderson is in the leadoff slot after being out since Aug. 28, also with a left hamstring strain.

MLB – Royals evaluate stadium options, downtown ballpark possible

The Kansas City Royals are evaluating options for once their lease expires at Kauffman Stadium. Owner John Sherman says a new downtown ballpark is a possibility. The Royals are tied to the 53-year-old stadium until 2031 under terms of a public-private partnership. The team must make a decision in the next couple of years to look elsewhere or press on with more renovations at Truman Sports Complex,

NFL – Lions CB Okudah has season-ending Achilles tendon injury

Detroit Lions cornerback Jeff Okudah has a season-ending Achilles tendon injury. The team made the announcement Monday. Okudah was hurt in the fourth quarter Sunday as the San Francisco 49ers held on to win 41-33 against the Lions. Detroit drafted the Ohio State star with the No. 3 overall pick last year and injuries limited him to nine games as a rookie. Okudah appeared to make improvements during training camp, but he had a rough game in Week 1.

NFL – Lions have a long list of fixes before facing Packers

The problem facing Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell isn’t finding things to fix. It is deciding where to start. The Lions trailed the San Francisco 49ers 31-10 at halftime and 41-17 with two minutes left before a late charge brought them within 41-33. Campbell said watching the game film didn’t make the game look much better than it had seemed in real time.

Raiders 34, Ravens 27 – OT – Raiders beat Ravens in OT

Derek Carr fired a 31-yard TD pass to Zay Jones in overtime to give the Las Vegas Raiders a 33-27 triumph over the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL season opener for both teams. Carr’s second TD pass of the game came after Carl Nassib’s strip sack of Lamar Jackson at the Ravens 27. The Raiders trailed 14-0 early, ending a 98-game, regular-season win streak for the Ravens when leading by at least 14 points dating to 2004.

NCAAFB – Michigan's Harbaugh renames drill, inspired to beat Ohio St

Jim Harbaugh seems to have his best running game in seven seasons at Michigan, rotating two speedy and powerful backs behind an offensive line that has been opening huge holes. In a 31-10 win over Washington, Michigan had 56 rushing carries for 343 yards and chose to throw just 15 times for 44 yards. Harbaugh says No. 25 Michigan will likely lean on its ground attack again against Northern Illinois on Saturday at home.

NCAAFB – Kelly has solutions for No. 12 Irish against visiting Purdue

No. 12 Notre Dame is trying to firm things up before a visit from Purdue this weekend. Both teams are 2-0, but the Fighting Irish have looked shaky at times. Notre Dame escaped Florida State with a 41-38 overtime victory to open the season. It had to rally for a 32-29 win at home over Toledo. Coach Brian Kelly says his staff is working on limiting big plays. Purdue coach Jeff Brohm says his team will have its hands full.

NCAAFB – USC fires Clay Helton 2 games into 7th season in charge

Southern California has fired football coach Clay Helton two games into his seventh season in charge. Athletic director Mike Bohn made the move two days after an embarrassing 42-28 home loss to Stanford. Helton went 46-24 during his improbable tenure in charge of the longtime West Coast college football powerhouse. Helton twice took over as USC’s interim head coach before getting the job on a permanent basis late in the 2015 season. Helton’s Trojans won one Pac-12 title and one Rose Bowl, but otherwise struggled to live up to the sky-high expectations at USC. He was 19-14 since the 2017 season.

NCAAFB – Arkansas fined after fans rush field following win vs Texas

The Southeastern Conference has fined Arkansas $100,000 after Razorbacks fans rushed the field following the win over Texas. The fans violated the league’s access to competition area policy that was adopted in 2004. Arkansas beat its former Southwest Conference for before a crowd of 74.531 — the ninth-largest in school history. It was the Razorbacks’ first win over Texas in Fayetteville since 1981. It’s a second offense for Arkansas, which also was fined following a win over LSU in 2014.
