Indians 4, Tigers 1 – Civale dominates Tigers again in 4-1 Cleveland victory

Aaron Civale dominated the Detroit Tigers again, taking a shutout into the ninth inning in the Cleveland Indians’ 4-1 victory. Civale improved to 6-0 with a 2.19 ERA in seven career starts against the Tigers, including three wins this season. He allowed one run, six hits and a walk in eight-plus innings. Civale started the ninth but left after Jeimer Candelario singled and Miguel Cabrera walked. James Karinchak allowed an RBI single to Jonathan Schoop and walked Akil Baddoo to load the bases with one out. Willi Castro took a called third strike and Eric Haase flew out to give Karinchak his sixth save.

White Sox 8, Cardinals 3 – Giolito, White Sox beat Flaherty, Cards 8-3 in HS reunion

Lucas Giolito beat Jack Flaherty in a major league matchup of former high school teammates, leading the Chicago White Sox to an 8-3 victory over the sloppy St. Louis Cardinals. Giolito pitched six innings of two-run ball in his second straight win, easily getting the better of a shaky Flaherty hurt by another poor defensive performance by the Cardinals. Flaherty lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his shortest outing of the season. The Harvard-Westlake reunion also had a little history behind the plate, with Joe West working a record 5,376th regular-season game, snapping a tie with Hall of Fame umpire Bill Klem.

Cubs 4, Pirates 3 – Pederson's 2 homers, Arrieta lead Cubs over Pirates 4-3

Joc Pederson hit two home runs, Jake Arrieta beat Pittsburgh for the third time this season and the Chicago Cubs defeated the Pirates 4-3. Pederson hit a solo shot in the third inning, and his two-run blast in the fifth tied it at 3. It was the 16th multihomer game of Pederson’s career, and he doubled his season homer total to four. Arrieta put the Cubs in a 3-0 hole after two innings but settled down to raise his record to 3-0 against Pittsburgh in 2021. He has a 15-6 lifetime record versus the Pirates.

Indians 6, Tigers 5 – Luplow's catch preserves Indians' 6-5 win over Tigers

Jordan Luplow made a diving catch on Eric Haase’s sinking liner to right field with the bases loaded, preserving a 6-5 victory for the Cleveland Indians over the Detroit Tigers. Luplow, who entered as a defensive replacement an inning earlier, made the catch look rather easy, but the ninth inning was anything but for closer Emmanuel Clase, who held on for his eighth save in nine chances. Spencer Turnbull allowed three runs in six innings for Detroit in his first game since pitching a no-hitter last week.

White Sox 5, Cardinals 1 – La Russa a winner vs old team, White Sox beat Cardinals 5-1

White Sox manager Tony La Russa wound up a winner in his first game against the team that ensured his Hall of Fame induction as Chicago beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-1 behind Lance Lynn’s arm and Andrew Vaughn’s bat. The victory ended a three-game skid for the AL Central leaders, who were swept by the New York Yankees after winning 10 of 13. The NL Central-leading Cardinals dropped their second straight. Lynn held the Cardinals hitless for 5 1/3 innings. Vaughn hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the sixth. After winning a World Series in Oakland, La Russa guided the Cardinals to two World Series championships, three pennants and nine postseason appearances from 1996-2011.

MLB – Joe West poised to break umpiring record with 5,376th game

Joe West is poised to break baseball’s umpiring record when the St. Louis Cardinals visit the Chicago White Sox. West is set to work home plate for his 5,376th regular-season game, snapping a tie with Hall of Famer Bill Klem. The colorful West, who turns 69 on Oct. 31, is perhaps the most famous umpire in major league history, known for his memorable run-ins with several players and managers over the years, to go along with at least one executive. He also fashions himself as a country music singer and songwriter, leading to the nicknames “Cowboy Joe” and “Country Joe.”

NBA – Pacers still evaluating Bjorkgren before making decision

The Indiana Pacers are standing pat — for now. After missing the NBA playoffs for the first time in six years, president of basketball operations Kevin Pritchard says he's still evaluating whether to bring back coach Nate Bjorkgren for a second season. Pritchard also says he'd rather not break up the roster and would prefer to see all those injured players get healthy for next season.

Golf – PGA Championship – Mickelson in record books with PGA Championship title

Phil Mickelson has become the oldest major champion by surviving a somewhat chaotic final round at the PGA Championship. The 50-year-old Mickelson squandered most of a five-stroke lead on the back nine before finishing two strokes ahead of Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen  at Kiawah Island. Mickelson closed with a 1-over 73 to finish 6 under for his sixth career major championship. Julius Boros was 48 when he won the 1968 PGA Championship in San Antonio. Boros held the distinction of oldest major champ for 53 years before Mickelson added to his legacy. Lefty also became the first player to win tournaments 30 years apart, and the 10th to win in three different decades. Koepka was 4 over on the par 5s when the game was still on and closed with a 74. Oosthuizen hit into the water as he was trying to make a final run and shot 73.

Royals 3, Tigers 2 – Santana's 2-run homer in 9th lifts Royals over Tigers 3-2

Carlos Santana belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Kansas City Royals a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Kansas City was held to three hits until the ninth, when Whit Merrifield led off with an infield single before Santana connected against Michael Fulmer. Kyle Zimmer struck out three in two hitless innings for the win. Royals manager Mike Matheny was ejected for the second time this season for arguing in the sixth. Detroit scored twice in the first against Kris Bubic, sparked by Robbie Grossman’s leadoff double. Jeimer Candelario and Ethan Haase each hit an RBI single.

Yankees 5, White Sox 4 – Judge walk-off walk lifts Yanks over Chisox, 6th win in row

Aaron Judge walked against Liam Hendriks with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to overcome Aroldis Chapman’s first blown save, and the New York Yankees extended their winning streak to six by beating the Chicago White Sox 5-4. Jameson Taillon completed a historic scoreless turn through the New York rotation. But pinch-hitter Andrew Vaughn sprinted around the bases after tying it at 4 with his opposite-field homer in the ninth. It was the first blown save by Chapman in 12 chances this year and the first earned run allowed by the closer.

Cubs 2, Cardinals 1 – F/10 – Baez's HR in 10th leads Cubs to 2-1 win over Cardinals

Jávier Báez hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning to break a scoreless tie and propel the Chicago Cubs to a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Baez hit the second pitch he saw from Alex Reyes 417 feet onto the center field batter’s eye for his 11th home run of the season. It was just the second earned run allowed by Reyes in 25 innings this season. Craig Kimbrel recorded four outs to improve Chicago’s record to 4-4 in extra inning contests. Adam Wainwright did not earn a decision despite allowing just one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts in eight innings.

Maggie Tidey of Lake Michigan Catholic High School Soccer is the WSJM Sports Berrien County Student Athlete of the Week for the week of May 9, 2021.

The Lakers played three matches in the week. Maggie started with four goals in a 4-0 win over New Buffalo. She then scored eight goals in an 8-0 win over Brandywine. She finished the week with one goal in a 3-2 win over Coloma. The 13 goals for the week gives her 38 on the season. It also gives her 102 career goals, which breaks a Lake Michigan Catholic school record.

Maggie is also a member of the Laker Basketball and Golf teams, Student Council, and Key Club. In the classroom, she graduates with a 3.7 grade point average.

Maggie is the daughter of Curtis and Katherine Tidey.

Another finalist for the week was Karly Klaer of St. Joe Track.

Erin Morgan of Marcellus High School Softball is our WSJM Sports Van Buren/Cass Student Athlete of the Week for the week of May 9, 2021.

In a doubleheader sweep of Howardsville Christian, Erin turned in a double, two home runs, five RBIs, and no errors in the field. Then in a doubleheader sweep of Bloomingdale, she had a double, a home run, and three RBIs, and no errors in the field. For the week, she wound up going a combined 11-16 at the plate with the eight RBIs.

Erin has earned Academic All-State honors in the past for softball. She is also a member of the Volleyball team, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and SADD. She is also the Co-Valedictorian of her class. She will be continuing here academic and softball careers at Aquinas College. In the classroom, she graduates with a 4.0 grade point average.

Erin is the daughter of Bob and Jody Morgan of Jones.

Other finalists for the week were Brett Clauser of Decatur Track and Kaleb Bodfish of South Haven Baseball.

Cubs 5, Nationals 2 – Ian Happ homers twice as Cubs beat Nationals 5-2

Ian Happ homered twice and drove in three runs, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 5-2. Happ put Chicago ahead to stay with a two-run shot in the third inning. He also led off the fifth with his sixth homer. It was Happ’s first multihomer game since Sept. 5 against St. Louis and No. 8 for his career. Josh Bell and Kyle Schwarber hit back-to-back homers for Washington in the first, but Joe Ross lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his second straight loss.

MLB – Cubs place OF Heyward on IL with left hamstring strain

The Chicago Cubs have placed outfielder Jason Heyward on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. Heyward left Wednesday night’s 4-3 loss to Washington in the fourth inning. He is batting .183 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 39 games. The Cubs also recalled outfielder Nick Martini from Triple-A Iowa before their 5-2 victory over the Nationals.

MLB – Hoyer disappointed with Cubs’ COVID-19 vaccination rate

Chicago Cubs executive Jed Hoyer is disappointed with the team’s COVID-19 vaccination rate, and he isn’t sure if it will ever reach Major League Baseball’s threshold for relaxing some of its coronavirus protocols. Despite the team’s vaccination advocacy and education program, the Cubs remain shy of 85% for their Tier 1 players and staff. Hoyer says “there’s a real competitive advantage” to the relaxation of MLB's COVID-19 rules.

Wizards 142, Pacers 115 – d Beal, Westbrook lead Wiz past Pacers 142-115 for East 8 seed

Russell Westbrook nearly had a triple-double and Bradley Beal scored 25 points in just 29 minutes to help the Washington Wizards reach the NBA playoffs as the Eastern Conference’s No. 8 seed by overwhelming the Indiana Pacers 142-115 in the play-in round. Washington led by as many as 38 points and advanced to face Joel Embiid and the No. 1 seed Philadelphia 76ers in the first round. It all marks quite a turnaround for coach Scott Brooks’ Washington team, which was 17-32 in early April. Indiana’s run of five consecutive playoff appearances ended in coach Nate Bjorkgren’s debut season.
