Brewers 3, Tigers 2 – F/10 – Brewers edge Tigers 3-2 in 10 innings for 5th straight win

Luis Urías hit a shot that bounced over the wall and brought home Omar Narváez with the winning run in the 10th inning as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Detroit Tigers 3-2. The Brewers won their fifth straight and snapped the Tigers’ three-game winning streak. The Tigers were starting a six-game road trip after posting their first home sweep of the New York Yankees since 2000. Willy Adames hit a two-run homer for the Brewers. Akil Baddoo had tying solo homer for the Tigers in the seventh.

White Sox 8, Indians 1/Indians 3, White Sox 1 – Ramírez homers, Indians beat Chisox to split 2nd DH in row

José Ramírez’s two-run homer and a solid start by reliever Cal Quantrill led Cleveland to a 3-1 win over the Chicago White Sox, giving the Indians their second straight split of seven-inning doubleheaders in two days. Ramírez connected for his 13th homer in the third inning off Jimmy Lambert to break a 1-1 tie. The Indians also split with Toronto on Sunday. In the first game, Adam Eaton’s two-run homer and José Abreu’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning sent the White Sox to an 8-6 win. Indians starter Triston McKenzie struck out a club record eight straight hitters, two short of the major league record.

Cubs 7, Padres 2 – Báez goes deep twice as Stewart, Cubs beat Padres 7-2

Javier Báez and Patrick Wisdom each homered twice, helping Kohl Stewart and the Chicago Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 7-2. Pressed into action after Trevor Williams had an appendectomy Sunday morning, Stewart pitched five innings of one-run ball in his first major league win since July 21, 2019, for Minnesota. Kris Bryant also went deep as Chicago won for the seventh time in eight games. San Diego dropped to 4-4 on its 10-game road trip. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit his 16th homer and Wil Myers drove in a run, but that was it for the Padres.

MLB – Cubs place RHP Williams on IL, recall Stewart to start

The Chicago Cubs have placed right-hander Trevor Williams on the 10-day injured list, adding another name to their long list of injured players. Williams was scheduled to start Monday against San Diego, but he had an appendectomy Sunday. Kohl Stewart was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to take Williams’ turn against the Padres. Despite a rash of injuries, the Cubs won 12 of 16 heading into the series with San Diego. Williams, Jason Heyward, Jake Marisnick, Nico Hoerner, Matt Duffy, Alec Mills and Justin Steele have gone on the IL since May 10.

Jamal Hailey of Berrien Springs High School Track is the WSJM Sports Berrien County Student Athlete of the Week for the week of May 16, 2021.

At the Division 2 Regionals, Jamal won the 100 Meter Dash with a time of :10.99, won the 200 Meter Dash with a time of :22.63, and ran a leg for the winning 400 Meter Relay team. Jamal is currently ranked 1st in the state in Division 2 in the 100 Meter Dash and 4th in the state in the 200 Meter Dash.

Jamal is also a member of the Berrien Springs Football and Basketball teams and has an interest in graphic design. In the classroom, he carries a 3.1 grade point average.

Jamal is the son of James and Someka Hailey of Benton Harbor.

Another finalist for the week was Lauren Koch of St. Joe Track.

Jonathan Holloway of Lawton High School Track is our WSJM Sports Van Buren/Cass Student Athlete of the Week for the week of May 16, 2021.

At the Division 3 Regional Championship Meet, Jonathon won the Individual Regional title in the 300 Meter Low Hurdles with a time of :42.16. He also placed 2nd in the 110 Meter High Hurdles with a time of :16.63. Jonathan also ran a leg for the winning 400 Meter Relay team and third place 800 Meter Relay team.

Jonathan is also a member of the Lawton Football and Basketball teams. In the classroom, he graduates with a 3.11 grade point average. After graduation, he’ll be attending Olivet College to continue his academic and football careers.

Other finalists for the week were Ellie Frost of South Haven Track, Gwen Grosvenor of Decatur Softball, and Erin Schneider of South Haven Softball.

Cubs 5, Pirates 3 – Wait what? Bizarre sequence helps Cubs top Pirates 5-3

The Chicago Cubs took advantage of some heads-up baserunning by Jose Baez to edge the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3. Baez got in a rundown between home and first after a routine grounder, buying time for Willson Contreras to score all the way from second. Baez reached second on the play then scored on a single by Ian Happ to help the Cubs win for the ninth time in 11 games. Gregory Polanco, Bryan Reynolds and Michael Perez homered for Pittsburgh. who lost 8 of 9.

Indians 5, Tigers 2 – Bieber allows 1 hit in 7 innings, Indians top Tigers 5-2

Shane Bieber struck out 12 in seven one-hit innings, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2. Bieber took a no-hitter into the seventh before Jonathan Schoop led off the bottom of that inning with a home run to left. The Cleveland right-hander then struck out three more hitters before leaving after 103 pitches. Eddie Rosario homered for the Indians, who helped Terry Francona to his 700th victory as Cleveland’s manager. Matthew Boyd allowed four runs and six hits in five innings for the Tigers, who have lost five of six.

White Sox 5, Orioles 1 – Cease, Mercedes lift White Sox over slumping Orioles 5-1

Dylan Cease struck out 10, Yermín Mercedes homered and drove in three, and the Chicago White Sox handed the Baltimore Orioles their 10th straight loss, 5-1. Cease threw a career-high 111 pitches and allowed one earned run over six innings. He stumbled following a 19-minute rain delay before first pitch, allowing a single and hitting a batter before retiring his next eight and 15 of the next 18. Baltimore’s Trey Mancini was hit by a pitch in the first inning and left with a bruised right elbow. X-rays were negative. The first baseman entered Thursday second in the majors with 42 RBIs a year after being diagnosed with colon cancer.

NBA – Knicks, 76ers ban fans for unruly behavior

The New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers each banned a fan and issued apologies for actions directed at opposing players during playoff games last night. The Knicks said they have barred a fan from Madison Square Garden for spitting on Atlanta guard Trae Young, and the Sixers banned the fan who threw popcorn on Washington guard Russell Westbrook. In addition, the Utah Jazz said three of their fans were banned indefinitely following a verbal altercation during last night’s win over Memphis.

Tigers 1, Indians 0 – Goodrum doubles, scores in 8th as Tigers beat Indians 1-0

Niko Goodrum doubled, advanced on Jake Rogers’ bunt and scored on Robbie Grossman’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians 1-0. Detroit starter Jose Urena gave up three hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings before exiting with a forearm injury in the middle of an at-bat. Michael Fulmer pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the win. Gregory Soto earned his his fifth save. Cal Quantrill gave up the game’s only run and allowed just two hits over three innings and took the loss.

Cardinals 4, White Sox 0 – Edman hits 2 HRs, Cards beat White Sox 4-0 to avoid sweep

Tommy Edman hit two home runs, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago White Sox 4-0 to avoid a three-game sweep. Edman connected against Carlos Rodón (5-2) in the third and Aaron Bummer in the eighth to make it 2-0. Edmundo Sosa added a two-run single in the ninth, and the NL Central-leading Cardinals came away with the win after losing four of five. John Gant (3-2) dodged bases-loaded jams in the first and third innings while pitching scoreless ball into the sixth. Manager Mike Shildt got ejected by third-base umpire Joe West in the seventh. The Cardinals also denied White Sox skipper Tony La Russa a sweep in his first series managing against St. Louis, the franchise the Hall of Famer guided to two World Series championships from 1996 to 2011.

Cubs 4, Pirates 1 – Trevor Williams pitches Cubs past Pirates 4-1

Trevor Williams pitched six innings and singled twice against his former team, helping the streaking Chicago Cubs top the stumbling Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1. Chicago won for the fifth time in six games and stayed a half-game back of NL Central-leading St. Louis. David Bote hit a two-run homer for the Cubs, and Kris Bryant had three hits and two RBIs. Williams permitted one run and three hits in his first win since April 17. Pittsburgh dropped its fifth straight game. Rookie Wil Crowe recorded just four outs.

Michigan Lutheran senior Jordan Ramirez is wrapping up his four year career as a multi-sport standout with the Titans.  Jordan has played a key roll for the Lutheran football, basketball, baseball, and soccer teams.

He recently signed his national letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic careers at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota.  He plans to play both football and baseball at Martin Luther.
