White Sox 4, Tigers 1 – Rodón takes no-hitter into 7th; White Sox sweep Tigers

Carlos Rodón took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and the Chicago White Sox completed a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers with a 4-1 win. Rodón was going for his second no-hitter of the season. He took a perfect game into the ninth inning against the Cleveland Indians on April 14, hitting a batter with one out before finishing the no-no. Eric Haase doubled with one out in the seventh on Sunday. Rodón finished the inning, allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out nine. Evan Marshall and Liam Hendriks completed the one-hitter, with Hendriks getting his AL-leading 17th save.

Cubs 2, Cardinals 0 – Davies sharp, Cubs beat Cardinals 2-0 for 3-game sweep

Zach Davies tossed two-hit ball into the seventh inning to outduel Carlos Martinez and the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 to complete a three-game sweep. The Cubs have won five straight and 15 of 20 to remain in a tie with the Milwaukee Brewers atop the NL Central. Chicago kept up its success at Wrigley Field, where it's won six in a row and nine of 10. The teams combined for only six hits, four by the Cubs. Anthony Rizzo went 1 for 4 and recorded the game’s only RBI. St. Louis has dropped three straight and 11 of 13 to fall one game below .500 at 32-33.

No. 9 hitter David LaManna hit a three-run home run to cap a four-run fourth inning, catapulting No. 10 overall seed Notre Dame to a 9-1 victory over No. 7 seed Mississippi State in the Starkville Super Regional, setting up a Monday showdown for a berth in the College World Series. The Bulldogs (44-16) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Rowdey Jordan tripled on the first pitch from Notre Dame starter Aidan Tyrell (5-1) and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tanner Allen on Tyrell’s second pitch, but that was it for Mississippi State.

Tennis – French Open – Djokovic rallies for his 2nd French Open title

Novak Djokovic has won his second French Open championship and his 19th Grand Slam title. Djokovic rallied past Stefanos Tsitsipas in a seesaw final at Roland Garros. The score was 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Djokovic also erased a two-set deficit to win in the fourth round, and has done it six times in his career. The 22-year-old Tsitsipas looked like the fresher player...

Tigers 8, Mariners 3 – Tigers rally early behind Schoop, beat Mariners 8-3

Jonathan Schoop homered and Isaac Paredes hit a go-ahead single as the Detroit Tigers rallied from a first-inning deficit and took advantage of three errors to beat the Seattle Mariners 8-3. Mitch Haniger put Seattle ahead against Tyler Alexander with the first of his two solo homers, but the Tigers rallied to take two of three from the Mariners, who have lost six of nine following a five-game winning streak. José Jiménez pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for his first win since last Aug. 26. Alex Lange threw the eighth and Gregory Soto pitched a perfect ninth to finish the six-hitter.

White Sox 5, Blue Jays 2 – Keuchel, Grandal lead White Sox past Blue Jays 5-2

Dallas Keuchel pitched six effective innings and Yasmani Grandal homered, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Led by Keuchel, Chicago closed out a 5-2 homestand and improved its AL Central lead to a season-high 4 1/2 games over idle Cleveland. Adam Engel also went deep, and reigning AL MVP José Abreu hit two RBI doubles. Marcus Semien and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. each drove in a run for Toronto, which lost for the fourth time in six games. Hyun Jin Ryu pitched six innings of three-run ball in his second straight loss.

MLB – White Sox 2B Madrigal sidelined by torn right hamstring

White Sox second baseman Nick Madrigal could miss the rest of the season after tearing his right hamstring, putting another key player on the team’s injured list. Madrigal was helped off the field after he tried to beat out a grounder in the seventh inning of Wednesday night’s 6-2 loss to Toronto. The No. 4 overall pick in the 2018 amateur draft had been rounding into form of late, batting .365 with two homers and 10 RBIs in his last 20 games. Manager Tony La Russa says the loss of Madrigal is a “big blow.”

MLB – Judge rejects effort to return MLB All-Star Game to Georgia

A Manhattan judge has rejected an attempt to force Major League Baseball to return next month's All-Star Game to Atlanta. U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Carponi ruled Thursday against a not-for-profit organization representing small businesses. The lawsuit filed May 31 alleged that Major League Baseball acted unconstitutionally when it moved the game from the Atlanta Braves stadium to Denver after Georgia Republicans enacted a restrictive new voting law. The rewrite of Georgia’s election rules followed former President Donald Trump’s repeated unproven claims of fraud after his presidential loss to President Joe Biden.

NBA – Bulls' White has shoulder surgery

Chicago Bulls guard Coby White has had surgery on his left shoulder after injuring it over the weekend. The team says White was hurt “while engaged in basketball activities away from the team” and will be reevaluated in four months. White averaged 15.1 points and 4.8 assists while starting 54 of the 69 games he played in last season.

Mariners 9, Tigers 6 – F/11 – Fraley's catch, single in 11th leads M's over Tigers 9-6

Jake Fraley made a game-saving catch in the ninth inning, then drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th to lead the Seattle Mariners over the Detroit Tigers 9-6. Fraley robbed Isaac Paredes of a game-ending homer with one out in the ninth, reaching well over the left-field fence to make the catch, then threw to first for an inning-ending double play. After both teams scored one run in the 10th, Fraley gave the Mariners a 5-4 lead with a one-out RBI single in the 11th.

Blue Jays 6, White Sox 2 – Grichuk homers, Blue Jays beat sloppy White Sox 6-2

Randal Grichuk hit a long home run and the Toronto Blue Jays took advantage of a season-high four errors by Chicago as well as a bases-loaded walk to beat the AL Central-leading White Sox 6-2. Grichuk hit a 451-foot drive leading off the second inning. Toronto rookie Alek Manoah threw five solid innings in his third major league start and the Blue Jays won despite another strong outing by Chicago’s Lance Lynn. The White Sox were sailing along with a 2-1 lead after Lynn struck out nine over seven innings. But a shaky bullpen and poor defense spoiled things for Chicago. Toronto scored three runs in the eighth and tacked on two more in the ninth.

Cubs 3, Padres 1 – Pederson, Arrieta lead Cubs to 3-1 win over Darvish, Padres

Joc Pederson and Sergio Alcantara homered, and Jake Arrieta threw five strong innings for the Chicago Cubs, who beat former teammate Yu Darvish and the San Diego Padres 3-1 to take two of three. The Cubs beat the Padres five times in six games in a 10-day stretch, including a three-game sweep at Wrigley Field last week. Darvish retired the first nine Cubs batters before Pederson hit a towering home run to right-center field leading off the fourth to tie the game at 1. Pederson mimicked Fernando Tatis Jr.’s stutter step as he approached third base on his trot. It was Pederson’s seventh.

MLB – Mets' Alonso claims MLB manipulating baseballs to harm FAs

New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso accused Major League Baseball of manipulating the baseballs to harm the earning potential for star free agents and players eligible for arbitration. Alonso’s comments came before New York’s game at Baltimore. He was responding to a question about the crackdown on sticky substances used by pitchers. Alonso's implied that the balls are friendlier to hitters in a year when a number of top pitchers are about to hit free agency, and vice versa.

MLB – White Sox return to 100% at Guaranteed Rate Field on June 25

The Chicago White Sox will return to 100% capacity at Guaranteed Rate Field starting with a June 25 game against Seattle. The announcement comes five days after the Chicago Cubs said they will move to 100% at Wrigley Field for their June 11 game against St. Louis. The White Sox say the June 25 game will be followed by postgame fireworks. Season ticket holders will return to their regular locations, and seating pods will be eliminated. More than half the 30 teams have announced returns to full capacity.

MLB – Baseball Hall delays induction to Sept 8. to allow crowd

Baseball’s Hall of Fame is moving this year’s induction ceremony for Derek Jeter, Larry Walker, Ted Simmons and the late Marvin Miller from July 25 to Sept. 8 so a crowd may attend as coronavirus restrictions ease. The ceremony will take place outdoors on the Hall’s lawn as a ticketed event with a limit on crowd size.

Tigers 5, Mariners 3 – Eric Haase homers in 1st and helps Tigers beat Mariners 5-3

Eric Haase hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the Detroit Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners 5-3. Matthew Boyd allowed an unearned run, six hits and a walk over six innings. Daniel Norris inherited the bases loaded with no outs in the eighth and limited Seattle to two runs. Jose Cisnero pitched the ninth for his second save. Marco Gonzales gave up four runs and five hits over four innings in his second start since coming back from a strained left forearm. The Tigers took advantage of Gonzales early, scoring four runs in two innings.

White Sox 6, Blue Jays 1 – Andrew Vaughn helps White Sox rally past Blue Jays 6-1

Andrew Vaughn homered in the seventh inning and delivered a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth, helping the Chicago White Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1. Shut out by Robbie Ray for most of the game, Chicago got on the board on Vaughn’s fifth homer and then broke it open with five runs in the eighth. After Vaughn made it 2-1 with a bases-loaded fly ball to deep center against Trent Thornton, Adam Eaton drove in Yermín Mercedes with a pinch-hit single. Leury García added a two-run triple, and Tim Anderson capped the rally with a sac fly.

Cubs 7, Padres 1 – Davies strong, Rizzo, Wisdom homer in Cubs' 7-1 win vs Pads

Zach Davies allowed just one hit in six scoreless innings, Anthony Rizzo homered and drove in four runs, and Patrick Wisdom went deep again for the Chicago Cubs as they defeated the San Diego Padres 7-1. Willson Contreras also homered for the Cubs, who have beaten the Padres four times in five games in a span of nine days. Chicago swept the Padres at Wrigley Field last week, when Wisdom homered three times, including twice in the first game. San Diego won the opener of this series 9-4 on Monday night. Wisdom has eight homers in 15 games.

NBA – Jokic takes MVP honors

Nikola Jokic wasn't highly regarded when he was taken in the NBA draft. He's now the league's reigning MVP. The Nuggets’ big man has been revealed as the NBA’s top player making him by far the lowest draft pick ever to win the award.  The Serbian product has become a dominant force since being selected 41st overall in the 2014 draft.  Jokic’s scoring average jumped from 19.9 points per game last season to 26.4. He tied his career high with 10.8 rebounds per game, and his average of 8.3 assists was just shy of Wilt Chamberlain’s all-time season average for a center.  Jokic was the runaway winner, getting 91 of the 101 first-place ballots cast

Padres 9, Cubs 4 – Machado, O’Grady power Padres past Cubs 9-4 in series opener

Manny Machado and Brian O’Grady each homered and had three RBIs to lead the San Diego Padres over the Chicago Cubs 9-4 in the opener of a three-game series between National League contenders. Machado hit a solo home run and two sacrifice flies. O’Grady had a two-run homer and an RBI single. Ryan Weathers lasted five innings for the win, giving up three runs and five hits. Chicago starter Adbert Alzolay left in the fourth with a blister on his right middle finger after walking leadoff batter Tommy Pham, who reached base four times.

NCAAMBB – Tom Izzo promotes Wojcik, hires 3 ex-Michigan State players

Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo has promoted Doug Wojcik to assistant coach to replace Dane Fife and hired three former Spartans Monday. Fife left the program in April to be the associate head coach at Indiana under Mike Woodson. Wojcik returned to Michigan State in 2018 to be Izzo's recruiting coordinator after a run as an assistant coach for the Spartans led to him being the head coach at Tulsa and College of Charleston. Mark Montgomery was hired as recruiting coordinator.  Austin Thornton is the team's video coordinator and Matt McQuaid is its director of basketball operations.

NCAAMBB – Former Michigan State basketball star charged with murder

A former captain of the Michigan State University basketball team has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a man in Detroit. Keith Appling is accused of killing 66-year-old Clyde Edmonds on May 22. The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says Appling and Edmonds had an argument over a gun. Appling has been in custody since his arrest on May 24. He played for Michigan State from 2010 to 2014. Appling also played basketball overseas and had two brief contracts with the NBA’s Orlando Magic.

IndyCar – Helio doesn't parlay Indy 500 win into seat at Detroit

Helio Castroneves is trying to get back into the IndyCar Series fulltime. He hoped his fourth win in the Indianapolis 500 would lead to more races. But it didn't payoff with a ride this weekend at the doubleheader at Detroit. Castroneves will instead debut Saturday night in Tony Stewart’s All-Star Superstar Racing Experience in Connecticut as previously scheduled. He still has five more IndyCar races on his calendar for Michael Shank Racing this season but the team did not expand those plans following his surprise victory.

White Sox 3, Tigers 0 – La Russa passes McGraw on wins list as White Sox beat Tigers

Tony La Russa moved into sole possession of second on baseball’s career manager wins list, snapping a tie with John McGraw by directing the Chicago White Sox to a 3-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers. It was win No. 2,764 for La Russa, who was hired by Chicago in October for his first managerial job since he led St. Louis to the World Series championship in 2011. Dylan Cease struck out 10 in seven sparkling innings for the White Sox, and Tim Anderson had two RBIs. The Tigers finished with five hits. They dropped three of four in the series.

Cubs 4, Giants 3 – Wisdom homers twice for Cubs, who avoid sweep with 4-3 win

Patrick Wisdom hit a pair of home runs and drove in three runs in helping the Chicago Cubs avoid a four-game sweep with a 4-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Wisdom has seven home runs in 13 games this season. He has a hit in nine of 11 games since his May 25 recalled from Triple-A Iowa. Kyle Hendricks won his fifth straight start, allowing three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out five. Craig Kimbrel struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 14th save.

NHL – Canada grants NHL cross-border travel exemption for playoffs

The NHL has received an exemption from Canadian health officials to allow cross-border travel for teams starting in the semifinal round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. When in Canada, teams will be required to stay in a bubble and be tested daily for COVID-19, similar to the tight restrictions that allowed the NHL to stage and complete its playoffs in two hub cities last year. Teams will be assigned designated hotels and have no interaction with the public. The exemption means the winner of the NHL’s West Division second-round playoff series between Colorado and Vegas will be allowed to travel to face the winner of the North Division second-round series between Winnipeg and Montreal.

NFL – Titans agree to deal with Falcons for Julio Jones

The Tennessee Titans have agreed to a deal with the Atlanta Falcons for seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones. The Falcons will receive the Titans’ second-round pick in 2022 and their fourth in 2023 with Atlanta sending Jones and a sixth-round pick in 2023 to Tennessee.

NASCAR – Larson wins again as Hendrick continues month of dominance

Kyle Larson beat teammate Chase Elliott in overtime at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday to win his second consecutive race. It continued a month of dominance for Hendrick Motorsports. Hendrick drivers have won four straight races dating to Alex Bowm...
