Bengals 34, Lions 11 – Joe Burrow throws 3 TDs as Bengals rout Lions 34-11
Joe Burrow tied a career high with three touchdown passes, helping the Cincinnati Bengals rout the Detroit Lions 34-11 Sunday. The Bengals already have four wins to equal last year’s total and to double their victories from 2019 during coach Zac Taylor’s debut season. Detroit is the NFL's only winless team. The Lions could not rally as they did in closely contested setbacks against San Francisco, Baltimore and Minnesota. They failed to score until Austin Seibert made a 35-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter.
Packers 24, Bears 14 – Rodgers throws 2 TDs, runs for 1 as Packers beat Bears 24-14
Aaron Rodgers threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, leading the Green Bay Packers to a 24-14 victory over the Chicago Bears. The Packers (5-1) beat the Bears (3-3) for the 20th time in 23 games counting the playoffs and improved to 22-5 with Rodgers as the starter against Chicago. They also prevented Chicago from tying them for the NFC North lead. Rodgers shook off a sluggish start, throwing a 1-yard touchdown to Allen Lazard in the second quarter and a 12-yarder to Aaron Jones in the third. Rodgers put the Bears away after Justin Fields threw a 5-yard touchdown to Darnell Mooney as he scored from the 6 to cap a 75-yard drive.
Colts 31, Texans 3 – Indianapolis gets in sync with 31-3 victory over Houston
Carson Wentz threw two touchdown passes and Jonathan Taylor ran for another score for the Colts in a 31-3 dismantling of the Texans. Wentz threw a 28-yard TD pass to Mo Alie-Cox for a advantage in 17-3 third-quarter. The Colts have followed an 1-3 start with consecutive wins, and Houston has dropped five in a row since a season-opening win.

Chicago scored the next nine points to take a two-point lead on Stefanie Dolson’s layup. She added another basket to make it 76-72 with 45.8 seconds left. Vandersloot then scored in the lane to seal the win setting off the celebration. As the final buzzer sounded, Parker sprinted to the corner of the court and hugged her family with tears in her eyes.

Tampa Bay rallied in the third period when Ross Colton, Nikita Kucherov and Alex Killorn scored in a four-minute span to make it 6-all. The defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers (5-1) lost another cornerback when three-time All-Pro Richard Sherman left in the first quarter with a hamstring injury but their depleted defense held on after Jalen Hurts rallied the Eagles from a 28-7 deficit.  Playing with an injured thumb, Brady came out firing. The 44-year-old, seven-time Super Bowl champion tossed TDs on Tampa’s first two drives while going 11 for 12 for 121 yards.

NFL – Bengals, Lions aim to bounce back after losing on late kicks
The Detroit Lions and Cincinnati Bengals have been on the wrong side of NFL history so far this season. The Lions became the first team to lose two games in the same season on game-winning kicks of 50-plus yards with no time left on the clock, and they did it in a three-week span. The Bengals were part of the first game that was marred by three potential winning field goals that failed to split the uprights in the fourth quarter or overtime. Both teams get a chance to bounce back Sunday at Ford Field.
NFL – Bears eye share of NFC North lead with Rodgers, Packers
The Chicago Bears have a chance to grab a share of the NFC North lead when they host Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. It's an opportunity that would have been tough to envision a few weeks ago. The Bears hit a low point with a 26-6 loss at Cleveland. They managed just 47 yards for one of the lowest totals in NFL history. They bounced back by beating the Detroit Lions and Las Vegas Raiders. But wins over the Packers have been few and far between. Green Bay has won 19 of the past 22 meetings counting the playoffs. And the Packers are 21-5 against the Bears in games Rodgers has started.
NFL – Bears place running back Damien Williams on COVID-19 list
The Chicago Bears have placed running back Damien Williams on the reserve/COVID-19 list, putting his status for their game against the Green Bay Packers in question. The Bears are already missing their leading rusher with David Montgomery on injured reserve because of a sprained knee. Williams is second on the team with 137 yards and two touchdowns. He ran for 64 yards last week, helping the Bears win at Las Vegas.

Avalanche 4, Blackhawks 2 – Byram gets first NHL goal, Avalanche beat Blackhawks 4-2
Bowen Byram scored his first NHL goal and added an assist to lead the short-handed Colorado Avalanche to a 4-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Nazem Kadri and Gabriel Landeskog each had a goal and an assist for Colorado, which played without star center Nathan MacKinnon and head coach Jared Bednar. Both are in the COVID-19 protocol and away from the team. Assistant coaches Ray Bennett and Nolan Pratt led the team. Darcy Kuemper stopped 32 shots in his Avalanche debut and Jack Johnson added a goal. Kuemper, acquired from Arizona in the offseason, wasn’t tested early but made two big saves on Kirby Dach in the second period. Dach had a breakaway at 12:02, but Kuemper closed the pads on his shot. Minutes later, he had another wide-open chance from the left circle that Kuemper stopped.

NFL – Lions coach Campbell says Ragnow feels guilty about surgery
Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell says center Frank Ragnow feels guilty about having season-ending toe surgery. Campbell says Wednesday that the surgery went well, adding Ragnow does not need to feel bad about doing the right thing for his long-term future. Ragnow was hurt earlier this month at Chicago and went on injured reserve last week. Center Evan Brown made his first career start in Sunday’s loss at Minnesota. The Lions signed Ragnow to a $54 million, four-year extension in May that keeps him under contract through the 2026 season. The Lions host the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
NFL – Fields understands rivalries going into game against Packers
Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields is getting his first taste of the rivalry against the Green Bay Packers, a lopsided one since Aaron Rodgers became a starter, and it's not a new situation for him considering Fields played in the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry. Fields' passing numbers haven't been up to the kind his counterpart has put up, but he said he's more interested in getting the win than statistics as the Bears try to end a four-game Green Bay winning streak in the series.

MLB – After another early exit, White Sox shift focus to future
The Chicago White Sox are shifting focus toward next season after they were eliminated in convincing fashion by Houston in an AL Division Series. Another early exit wasn't what they envisioned. The White Sox thought they were in position to make a run in October with stars like José Abreu and Tim Anderson and Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa back for a second stint. Chicago ran away with the AL Central, only to get pushed around by the Astros. Abreu says the White Sox “did our best" and Houston was “better.”
MLB – Playoff series for the ages as Dodgers, Giants go to Game 5
Everybody expected a playoff series for the ages between the century-old rival Dodgers and Giants, and now they’ve got it. Anything less than a winner-take-all Game 5 would have been a baseball travesty, leaving the sport short-changed on the October stage. It’s the 107-win, NL West champion Giants vs. the defending World Series champ Los Angeles Dodgers for a place in the NL Championship Series against Atlanta starting Saturday night. It all comes down to Game 5 on Thursday night, back at the San Francisco’s Oracle Park after the Dodgers staved off elimination with a 7-2 victory at home Tuesday night.

Michael Brantley had three hits and two RBIs.
Braves 5, Brewers 4 – Bats finally wake up but Hader falters, Brewers eliminated

MLB – La Russa-led White Sox make another early October exit
Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa and the Chicago White Sox had their sights set on advancing in the playoffs after running away with the AL Central. Their season came to an emphatic end with a 10-1 loss to AL West champion Houston in Game 4 of a Division Series that wasn’t close. They never got the pitching and only occasionally got the hitting that carried them to their first division championship in 13 years and gave them back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time. And after getting knocked out by Oakland in the wild-card round last year, they bowed out in humbling fashion against the Astros.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said the league has only four unvaccinated players as it opens up the 2021-22 season. Bettman said NHL officials and all the personnel that come into contact with the players are vaccinated. One of the four unvaccinated players is Detroit Red Wings forward Tyler Bertuzzi.  Bettman was in attendance for the regular-season opener between the back to back Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning and the Pittsburgh Penguins.  The Lightning have expressed a continuing interest in hosting an outdoor game but Bettman said the weather in Florida remains a challenge to pulling it off.
NHL – Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon to miss opener with COVID-19
The Colorado Avalanche will open their season without Nathan McKinnon. The star center has tested positive for COVID-19. The earliest he might return is Saturday when the Avalanche host the St. Louis Blues. General manager Joe Sakic says the team is 100% vaccinated and that McKinnon doesn't have any symptoms and is feeling well. Avalanche coach Jared Bednar has been in the NHL's COVID-19 protocol since last week and is expected back on the bench this weekend.

NFL – Gruden out as Raiders coach
Jon Gruden is out as coach of the Las Vegas Raiders after emails he sent before being hired in 2018 contained racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments. Gruden released a statement Monday night that he is stepping down after The New York Times reported that Gruden frequently used misogynistic and homophobic language directed at Commissioner Roger Goodell and others in the NFL. It was a rapid downfall for Gruden, who is in the fourth year of a 10-year, $100 million contract he signed with the Raiders in 2018. It started on Friday when the Wall Street Journal reported that Gruden used a racist term to describe NFL union chief DeMaurice Smith in a 2011 email to former Washington executive Bruce Allen.

That gave the Braves a 2-1 edge in the NL Division Series. Ian Anderson and the Braves bullpen combined on a five-hitter and won by a 3-0 score for the second straight game. Boosted by shortstop Dansby Swanson’s athletic defense, Atlanta can try to reach its second straight NL Championship Series when it hosts Game 4 on Tuesday. Pederson’s homer in the fifth inning was his second of the series. He singled as a pinch-hitter in his only other at-bat in this series, and has driven in four of Atlanta’s seven runs.
