White Sox 8, Twins 5 – Collins, White Sox complete sweep of Twins with 8-5 win

Zack Collins hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth inning and the Chicago White Sox scored at least seven runs for the fourth straight game, completing a three-game sweep of the Minnesota Twins 8-5. Chicago got four runs off Minnesota’s bullpen after the Twins erased a 3-0 deficit. The AL Central-leading White Sox won their fourth straight after losing seven of nine. Collins broke a 4-4 tie when he hit a fastball from Jorge Alcala into the left-center field bleachers. Jose Abreu drove in another run in the sixth, and Danny Mendick and Collins drove in two more in the seventh.

MLB – Biden to host Dodgers, World Series champs, at White House

President Joe Biden will host the Los Angeles Dodgers at the White House on Friday to mark the team’s World Series victory last October over the Tampa Bay Rays. The White House announced that the team, which is in town for a four-game series against the Washington Nationals, will attend the East Room ceremony. Vice President Kamala Harris, the former California senator, will also attend the even. The event marks the return of ceremonies for sports champions at the White House after an inconsistent record of the tradition under the Trump administration.

Bucks 123, Hawks 112 – Without Giannis, Bucks beat Hawks 123-112 for 3-2 lead

Brook Lopez scored a playoff career-high 33 points and the Milwaukee Bucks withstood Giannis Antetokounmpo’s absence and beat the Atlanta Hawks 123-112 on Thursday to regain the lead in the Eastern Conference finals.  The Bucks own a 3-2 series edge and are one win away from reaching the NBA Finals for the first time since 1974. Game 6 is Saturday in Atlanta. Each team was missing its biggest star as Antetokounmpo dealt with a hyperextended left knee and Atlanta’s Trae Young sat out a second straight game due to a bone bruise in his right foot.

NHL – Richardson set to hand Habs coaching duties back to Ducharme

Montreal Canadiens assistant Luke Richardson is preparing to hand back the coaching duties to Dominique Ducharme for the remainder of the Stanley Cup Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ducharme spent the past two weeks in mandatory self-quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19. The 14-day period ended Thursday, leaving him eligible to return in time for Game 3 as the series shifts to Montreal on Friday night. The Canadiens could use a boost after losing the first two games in Tampa Bay. Montreal did show signs of improvement in a 3-1 loss on Wednesday.

NHL – Canada Dry? Habs seek to end nation's 28-year Cup drought

The Montreal Canadiens bid to end Canada's Stanley Cup drought brings back memories of the building in which they last won the title in 1993. The Montreal Forum still stands, but it's significance is beginning to fade. The iconic shrine where the Canadiens hoisted 12 of their 24 Cups has been turned into a multiplex theater. The Canadiens have since moved to the Bell Centre, which hosting its first Cup Final series. The defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning lead 2-0 with the series switching to Montreal for Game 3 on Friday.

Tigers 9, Indians 4 – Game 1 – Castro, Schoop drive in 3 each, Tigers beat Indians 9-4

Harold Castro and Jonathan Schoop each drove in three runs, powering the Detroit Tigers past the Cleveland Indians 9-4 in the first game of a doubleheader. Castro’s two-out single off Bryan Shaw in the fifth inning scored Nomar Mazara and broke a 4-4 tie. Schoop had a two-run single in the seventh as the Tigers banged out 15 hits in the seven-inning game. Kyle Funkhouser retired all five batters he faced in relief of starter José Urena, who allowed a career-high four home runs in 3 1/3 innings. Detroit won at Cleveland for the first time in five games this season. Rookie Bobby Bradley hit two of the four homers off Urena.

Tigers 7, Indians 1 – Game 2 – Cabrera hits 494th homer, Tigers sweep DH from Indians

Miguel Cabrera hit his 494th career homer, moving into sole possession of 28th place all-time, and the Detroit Tigers completed a doubleheader sweep with a 7-1 win over the Cleveland Indians. Cabrera went 2 for 4, scored twice and broke a tie with Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff on the homer list with a solo shot off Nick Wittgren in the fifth inning. Wily Peralta, who didn’t pitch in the majors last year, allowed one unearned run over five innings for his first victory since April 17, 2019, with Kansas City.

White Sox 13, Twins 3 – Grandal hits 2 of White Sox 6 HRs to rip Twins 13-3

Yasmani Grandal hit a three-run shot and a towering two-run drive, and the Chicago White Sox went deep six times to pound the Minnesota Twins 13-3. Rookie Andrew Vaughn smacked a two-run homer and had three RBIs. Gavin Sheets hit his first career home run in his second game as Chicago won its third straight. José Abreu and Brian Goodwin added solo shots to help first-place Chicago expand its lead over Cleveland in the AL Central. Dylan Cease cruised to his fourth victory in five starts, allowing three hits and striking out seven in six innings. Josh Donaldson and Nelson Cruz connected for solo homers off the 25-year-old right-hander.

Brewers 15, Cubs 7 – Ashby tagged, but Brewers sweep Cubs for 8th straight win

Highly touted Milwaukee prospect Aaron Ashby got roughed up for seven runs in the first inning of his big league debut, but Luis Urias homered twice as the Brewers rallied to rout the Chicago Cubs 15-7 for their eighth straight win. The Brewers swept the three-game series and increased their NL Central lead to six games over Chicago. The Cubs lost their sixth in a row. Willy Adames hit a grand slam during an eight-run burst in the fourth inning that put Milwaukee ahead 14-7. His error at shortstop helped the Cubs break loose at the start against Ashby.

The Phoenix Suns are headed to the NBA Finals for the first time in 28 years, defeating the Los Angeles Clippers 130-103 to close out the Western Conference finals in six games. Chris Paul tied his career playoff high of 41 points points and Devin Booker added 22 points to send the Suns to their third Finals appearance in franchise history. They will face either the Atlanta Hawks or Milwaukee Bucks, who are tied 2-2 in the East finals. Marcus Morris led the Clippers with 26 points and Paul George added 21 points.

White Sox 7, Twins 6 – Gavin Sheets delivers in debut, White Sox beat Twins 7-6

Gavin Sheets had two hits and two RBIs in his major league debut, helping Lucas Giolito and the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 7-6. Leury García also drove in two runs as Chicago increased its AL Central lead to 2 1/2 games over Cleveland. Giolito pitched six-plus innings of three-run ball in his first win in a month. Josh Donaldson hit a two-run homer for Minnesota, which had won seven of nine.

Brewers 2, Cubs 1 – Woodruff excels, Brewers edge Cubs 2-1 for 7th straight win

Brandon Woodruff pitched another gem and the Milwaukee Brewers made the most of their two hits, hanging on to edge the Chicago Cubs 2-1 for their season-high seventh straight win. A day after battering Chicago 14-4, the Brewers extended their NL Central lead to five games. The second-place Cubs lost their fifth in a row. Milwaukee managed to win with just an RBI double by Christian Yelich in the first inning and an RBI single by Jace Peterson in the fourth. Both runs were walked aboard by Zach Davies, who made his first start against his former team. Woodruff allowed one run on four hits in six innings, striking out eight and nudging his ERA down from 1.89 to 1.87.

Tigers at Indians – PPD – Tigers, Indians postponed, playing doubleheader on Wednesday

Following a lengthy delay at the start, Tuesday night’s game between the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians was postponed by rain. Both starting pitchers got warmed up in the bullpen and it appeared the second game of the series between the AL Central teams was set to start on time when the grounds crew brought out the tarp just minutes before the scheduled 7:10 p.m. first pitch. The game was rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday, starting at 4 p.m. However, there is more rain in the forecast.

MLB – White Sox place Lamb on IL with strained right quadriceps

The Chicago White Sox have placed Jake Lamb on the 10-day injured list and reinstated fellow outfielder Billy Hamilton from the IL. The White Sox also recalled first baseman Gavin Sheets from Triple-A Charlotte and optioned outfielder Luis González to their top farm club. The 30-year-old Lamb has a strained right quadriceps. He is batting .224 with five homers and 10 RBIs in 31 games in his first season with Chicago.

Hawks 110, Bucks 88 – Hawks romp to 110-88 win without Young, Giannis goes down

The Atlanta Hawks proved they are more than a one-man team, shaking off Trae Young’s absence with a freak injury to even the Eastern Conference finals at two wins apiece with a 110-88 rout of the Milwaukee Bucks. And in another stunning twist to a series no one saw coming, two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo hobbled off the court with an injured left knee, depriving the Bucks of their best player. Lou Williams did a stellar job filling in for Young with 21 points and the Hawks pulled away in the third quarter. Game 4 is Thursday night in Milwaukee.

Indians 13, Tigers 5 – Ramírez's 5 RBIs help Indians shake off injury, rout Tigers

José Ramírez homered and drove in five runs, Austin Hedges had a two-run shot and the Cleveland Indians bounced back from losing outfielder Josh Naylor to a grisly injury a day earlier by belting the Detroit Tigers 13-5. Ramírez connected in the fourth inning off rookie Matt Manning as the Indians set season highs in runs and hits. Hedges had three RBIs and Amed Rosario had three hits for Cleveland, which pulled within two games of AL Central-leading Chicago. Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera connected for his 493rd homer, tying him with Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff for 28th on the career list.

Brewers 14, Cubs 4 – Brewers score 10 in 8th, beat Cubs 14-4 for 6th straight win  

Willy Adames and Keston Hiura each hit a three-run homer during a 10-run outburst in the eighth inning that lifted the Milwaukee Brewers a 14-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The Brewers earned their sixth consecutive victory to extend their NL Central lead over the Cubs to four games. Avisaíl García homered and drove in three runs for the Brewers. Jace Peterson went 3 for 4 and scored three runs. Hiura had two hits and four RBIs. Ian Happ and Patrick Wisdom each hit a two-run homer for the Cubs.

Twins at White Sox – PPD – Twins-White Sox series opener postponed by rain

The opener of a scheduled four-game series between the Minnesota Twins and the Chicago White Sox was postponed because of rain. The teams will play a doubleheader on July 19. Barring future postponements, the doubleheader will be the seventh of the season for Chicago and fourth for Minnesota. The Twins had a game against Cleveland postponed on Saturday. Chicago right-hander Lucas Giolito and Minnesota right-hander Kenta Maeda had been scheduled to pitch Monday. They are now set for Tuesday.

Paul George scored 41 points, Reggie Jackson added 23 and the resilient Los Angeles Clippers staved off elimination by beating the Phoenix Suns 116-102 in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals. The short-handed Clippers were playing without two-time Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard and center Ivica Zubac, who missed his first game of the season with an MCL sprain in his right knee. They’ve already fought through two grueling series wins in these playoffs, coming back from 2-0 deficits to beat both the Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz. Now they’re trying to claw back against the Suns. Game 6 is on Wednesday in Los Angeles.

NCAABSB – Big 1st inning sends Vandy past MSU 8-2 in CWS finals opener

Vanderbilt gave Jack Leiter a big early lead and went on to an 8-2 victory over Mississippi State in Game 1 of the College World Series finals to move within a win of a second straight national championship. The Commodores scored seven runs off Christian MacLeod and Chase Patrick in the first inning Monday night. McLeod struggled for a second straight CWS start and got only two outs in the bottom half. Leiter allowed two runs and three hits and struck out eight in six innings.

Tigers 2, Astros 1 – F/10 – Grossman's 10th-inning squeeze bunt lifts Tigers over Astros

Robbie Grossman’s squeeze bunt in the 10th inning drove in the winning run and the Detroit Tigers won a duel of small ball, beating the Houston Astros 2-1 for a split of their four-game series. The Tigers went 5-2 against Houston this season. There were a total of only seven hits in their final meeting this year, and Detroit needed just three to win. Houston brought in reliever Blake Taylor to begin the 10th with Akil Baddoo starting on second as the automatic runner. Jonathan Schoop’s groundout moved the winning run to third. Grossman bunted Taylor’s first pitch to the third-base side of the mound and Baddoo beat Taylor’s desperate flip.

Mariners 3, White Sox 2 – LHP Santiago ejected, glove confiscated during Mariners' win

Seattle reliever Hector Santiago was ejected after he was checked by the umpires as part of baseball’s new sticky substance protocols, and the Mariners beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2 in the resumption of a suspended game. Santiago was stopped as he exited in the fifth inning. His glove was confiscated, and it was later announced that Santiago had been thrown out. Taylor Trammell homered twice for Seattle, which improved to 10-2 in its last 12 games. Paul Sewald got one out for the win, and Kendall Graveman worked the ninth for his seventh save.

Dodgers 7, Cubs 1 – Kershaw's 13 Ks, McKinstry's slam lift Dodgers past Cubs 7-1

Clayton Kershaw racked up a season-high 13 strikeouts over eight dominant innings, and Zach McKinstry hit a grand slam in the second inning of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 7-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Cody Bellinger homered in his second straight game and drove in three runs in the Dodgers’ third consecutive win over Chicago after four Cubs pitchers combined for a no-hitter in the series opener Thursday. Kershaw yielded four hits while flummoxing the Cubs with his slider, recording his highest strikeout total in a regular-season game since July 2017 and getting a season-high 25 swings and misses.

MLB – Cubs' Anthony Rizzo leaves game with lower back tightness

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo has left Chicago’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers with tightness on the left side of his lower back. The slugger struck out and grounded out in his first two at-bats against Clayton Kershaw. Rizzo also couldn’t make a difficult scoop on a low throw from shortstop Javier Báez, prolonging the second inning. Báez was charged with an error, and Cody Bellinger hit a two-run homer moments later to put the Dodgers up 6-0. Rizzo is batting .248 with 32 RBIs in 70 games this season.

NHL – Canadiens' Armia in COVID-19 protocol day before Cup Final

Montreal Canadiens forward Joel Armia has been placed in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol. He didn't travel with the team to Tampa Bay, a day before Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. General manager Marc Bergevin made the announcement after Armia was not at practice in Montreal before the Canadiens traveled to play the Lightning. It’s unclear how long Armia will be in the protocol or whether he tested positive. Armia spent 19 days in the protocol from March 22 to April 9.
