NHL – Blackhawks GM resigns, team fined after sexual assault probe

An independent review has found that the Chicago Blackhawks mishandled allegations that an assistant coach sexually assaulted a player during the team’s Stanley Cup run in 2010. Stan Bowman resigned as the Blackhawks' general manager and president of hockey operations in the wake of the report by a law firm hired by the team. The NHL fined the team $2 million for “the organization’s inadequate internal procedures and insufficient and untimely response.” The former Blackhawks video coach was alleged to have sexually assaulted two players, with the front office knowing and doing nothing. Bowman also stepped down from his position as GM of the U.S. men’s hockey team at the Winter Olympics.

NHL – Blackhawks captain Toews enters NHL's COVID-19 protocol

The Chicago Blackhawks put captain Jonathan Toews and Henrik Borgstrom in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol, giving the winless team five players on the list. Toews and Borgstrom missed practice after they joined fellow forwards Patrick Kane and Jujhar Khaira and defenseman Riley Stillman in the protocol. Assistant coaches Marc Crawford and Tomas Mitell are away from the team for the same reason. The use of the COVID-19 list doesn’t necessarily mean any of the players or coaches tested positive. They could have been deemed a close contact of someone who tested positive. The team was 100% vaccinated at the start of training camp.

Braves 6, Astros 2 – Soler, Braves overcome Morton injury, top Astros in Game 1

Making his first start since testing positive for COVID-19, Jorge Soler became the first player to begin a World Series with a home run and the Atlanta Braves, despite the loss of pitcher Charlie Morton to a broken leg, hushed the Houston Astros 6-2 in Game 1. Boosted by a strong bullpen effort, a two-run homer by Adam Duvall and a late sacrifice fly from Freddie Freeman, the Braves coasted in their first Series appearance since Chipper Jones and the Big Three aces ascended in 1999. Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and the Astros mostly looked lost at the plate. This is their third World Series in five seasons — and first since their illegal sign-stealing scheme was revealed.

MLB – Manfred remains optimistic on labor; pitch clock encouraging

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred exchanged a handshake with players’ union head Tony Clark on the field before the World Series opener and expressed optimism about reaching an agreement before the current deal expires Dec. 1 but did not detail any progress in talks that appear headed to a lockout. There is no evidence of progress toward an agreement, and many management officials and player agents have said they are prepared for a lockout if there is no deal when the current agreement expires. Clark said talks have been ongoing and he’s “looking to take advantage of as many days as the schedule permits throughout the course of the next five-plus weeks or so to continue that dialogue.”

MLB – Braves bullpen another long winning night in World Series G1

The relievers keep coming through for the Atlanta Braves. Left-hander A.J. Minter threw a career-high 43 pitches before three other relievers finished off Atlanta's 6-2 win over the Houston Astros in Game 1 of the World Series. Minter had to enter in the third after starter Charlie Morton departed with a broken right leg.

Flames 3, Red Wings 0 – Markstrom shuts out Red Wings in Calgary's 3-0 win

Jacob Markstrom stopped all 33 shots Detroit took Thursday night in the Calgary Flames' 3-0 victory over the Red Wings. Markstrom recorded his ninth career shutout in his 12th season in the NHL. The Flames, who never trailed, took control of the game midway through the second period. Elias Lindholm scored first, followed about four minutes later by Andrew Mangiapane’s goal. Matthew Tkachuk added an empty-netter with about two minutes left in the game after Detroit pulled its goalie.

Canucks 4, Blackhawks 1 – Demko makes 29 saves, Canucks beat winless Blackhawks 4-1

Jason Dickinson, Tanner Pearson and Brock Boeser scored their first goals of the season as the Vancouver Canucks topped the winless Chicago Blackhawks 4-1. Thatcher Demko made 29 saves and Conor Garland added an empty-netter with 1:02 left to help the Canucks end a two-game slide. Vancouver scored two goals in the second period to take the lead for good. Alex DeBrincat scored a power-play goal for sputtering Chicago, which dropped to 0-4-1. The Blackhawks have been outscored 21-9 this season and haven’t led in any of their five games.

Dodgers 11, Braves 2 – Taylor hits 3 HRs, Dodgers beat Braves 11-2 to extend NLCS

Chris Taylor hit three homers and drove in six runs to help the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Atlanta 11-2, cutting the Braves' lead to 3-2 in the best-of-seven NL Championship Series. The defending champion Dodgers have won seven straight postseason elimination games dating to last season. They also trailed 0-2 and 1-3 against Atlanta in the NLCS last year before rallying to win three straight at a neutral site in Texas. AJ Pollock homered twice for the Dodgers and had four RBIs. Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer for the Braves in the first inning.

Case Keenum stepped in for Baker Mayfield and made the most of his first start in two years, leading Cleveland’s injury-ravaged offense and the Browns to a 17-14 win over the Denver Broncos. Keenum didn’t put up impressive stats, but he threw a touchdown pass and did enough — as did Cleveland’s maligned defense — to get the Browns a much-needed win. They survived without Mayfield, who sat out with a shoulder injury and could miss more time. Browns third-string back D'Ernest Johnson had a career-high 146 yards and a 4-yard TD. The Broncos lost their fourth straight and star linebacker Von Miller left in the first half with a leg injury and didn't return.

Zach LaVine scored 15 of his 34 points in the third quarter, leading the Chicago Bulls to a 94-88 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night in the opener for both teams. Detroit’s Jerami Grant was off on an 11-foot baseline jumper with 50 seconds left, missing a chance to tie it. The Bulls sealed the victory by making free throws. The Pistons were without rookie guard Cade Cunningham due to a sprained right ankle. DeMar DeRozan had 17 points, and Lonzo Ball had 12 points in their Bulls debut.

Hornets 123, Pacers 122 – Ball scores 31 to rally Hornets past Pacers 123-122

LaMelo Ball scored 31 points on seven 3-pointers, and the Charlotte Hornets used a 24-0 third-period run to battle back and stun the Indiana Pacers 123-122 on Wednesday night. Indiana led 122-121 on Torrey Craig’s foul shots with 12.7 left. P.J. Washington made two free throws with 4.6 seconds left before Domantas Sabonis’ miss from 11 feet sealed the Hornets’ win. Ball scored 12 points in the third-period run and nearly finished with a triple-double, ending with nine rebounds and seven assists. Sabonis scored 33 points, Malcolm Brogdon had 28, and Chris Duarte chipped in with 27 for Indiana.

Astros 9, Red Sox 1 – Astros' Valdez goes 8, beats Red Sox 9-1 for 3-2 ALCS lead

Framber Valdez gave the Houston Astros the start they were looking for. The Astros lefty was perfect through four, took a two-hit shutout into the seventh and became the first pitcher in the 2021 postseason to finish eight innings on Wednesday. That helped Houston beat Boston 9-1 in Game 5 of the AL Championship Series. The Astros are one win from a second straight trip to the World Series. Yordan Alvarez had three hits and three RBIs for the Astros.

Braves 9, Dodgers 2 – Braves blast 4 HRs, beat Dodgers 9-2 for 3-1 lead in NLCS

Eddie Rosario homered twice in his second four-hit game of the NL Championship Series and six Atlanta pitchers combined on a four-hitter, giving the Braves a 9-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers and a commanding 3-1 lead in their best-of-seven playoff. Rosario finished a double short of the cycle and knocked in four runs. Adam Duvall and Freddie Freeman also homered for the Braves. Game 5 is Thursday at Dodger Stadium.

NHL – Climate Pledge Arena ready to get Kraken for hockey debut

The home of Seattle's new NHL team is about ready for its hockey debut on Saturday night when the Kraken host the Vancouver Canucks. The arena will have its first official event Friday night when Coldplay performs and it also hosted a benefit concert featuring Foo Fighters. The arena project started nearly five years ago when Oak View Group was selected by the city of Seattle to renovate the original Seattle Center Coliseum. The final cost of the project is expected to exceed $1 billion.

Kendra Koster, a Sophmore from Lawton High School and member of the girls Cross Country team, is the winner of the Mid-West Family Player of the Week for the week of October 18,2021.

On October 14, in the SAC conference Championship at Kalamazoo Christian, Kendra finished in 1st place with a 5K time of 19:20, while helping Lawton finish 2nd as a team.

Kendra also finished 1st at the Bangor, Mendon, Centreville, and Eau Claire invites, while finishing second in the Otsego invite.

Kendra is also a member of the Lawton Track Team and is a state qualifier in the 2-mile.

Kendra also enjoys boating, wake-boarding, and going on "fun runs" with friends.

In the classroom, Kendra carries a 3.93 GPA.

Kendra is the daughter of Steve and Julia Koster.

Lucas Raymond made his first NHL goal a big one for the Detroit Red Wings, breaking a scoreless tie at 6:38 of the third period on the way to a 4-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. The 19-year-old Raymond, from Gothenburg, Sweden, was picked fourth overall by the Red Wings in the 2020 draft. He also assisted on Tyler Bertuzzi’s fifth goal of the season just more than two minutes after beating goalie Joonas Korpisalo, who stopped Detroit’s first 33 shots on net. Boone Jenner made it a one-goal game at 12:51, but Red Wings goalie Thomas Greiss and his defense preserved the lead. Vladislav Namestnikov and Adam Erne added empty-net goals for Detroit.

Islanders 4, Blackhawks 1 – Sorokin stops 39, Islanders beat Blackhawks 4-1 for 1st win

Ilya Sorokin made 39 saves and Oliver Wahlstrom scored twice in the third period, helping the New York Islanders beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 for their first victory of the season. Anthony Beauvillier and Cal Clutterbuck also scored as New York improved to 1-2-0 on its opening 13-game road trip. The Islanders don’t play their first home game at the new UBS Arena until Nov. 20. Chicago outplayed New York for long stretches in its home opener, but remained winless during a sluggish 0-3-1 start.

Mookie Betts provided the tiebreaking single while the Los Angeles Dodgers erupted for four runs in the eighth inning to pull out a 6-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Cody Bellinger tied it with a three-run blast off losing pitcher Luke Jackson before the Dodgers pulled within 2-1 in the NL Championship Series. Corey Seager opened the scoring with a two-run homer for LA.

Astros 9, Red Sox 2 – Astros awaken for 7 in 9th, beat Boston 9-2 to tie ALCS 2-2

Jose Altuve hit a tying home run in the eighth inning and the Houston offense awakened with seven runs in the ninth on Tuesday night as the Astros came back to beat the Boston Red Sox 9-2. That tied the AL Championship Series at two games apiece. Six outs from falling behind 3-1 in the best-of-seven playoff and facing elimination in Game 5 at Fenway Park, the AL West champions instead guaranteed themselves at least one game back in Houston.

MLB – MLB qualifying offer price drops by $500,000 to $18.4M

The price of a qualifying offer to Major League Baseball free agents dropped by $500,000 to $18.4 million, a sign of the slide in salaries. The figure is determined by the average of the top 125 major league contracts this year and marks only the second fall. The price fell by $100,000 to $17.8 million in 2019, then rose to $18.9 million in 2020. Among the top players eligible for free agency following the World Series are Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman, Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager and Houston shortstop Carlos Correa.

Chicago turned out Tuesday for a parade celebrating the WNBA champion Sky, bringing a big smile to the city celebrating its first world championship since 2016.

MLB – Carter Hawkins joins Chicago Cubs as new general manager

Carter Hawkins has been formally introduced as the Cubs’ new general manager, stepping into a position that had been open since Jed Hoyer was promoted to president of baseball operations almost a year ago. Hawkins comes to Chicago after 14 seasons with Cleveland, including the last five as an assistant general manager. He also supervised the team’s player development department. Hawkins says he is looking forward to helping the Cubs return to the playoffs.

Kyle Schwarber's grand slam helped the Red Sox rout the Houston Astros 12-3 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven AL Championship Series. One game after J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers each hit a grand slam in Houston, Schwarber hit a second-inning 3-0 pitch out. Christian Arroyo homered in the third to give the wild-card Red Sox a 9-0 lead for the second game in a row. Martinez and Devers each homered again, and Kiké Hernández had two more hits for Boston. The Red Sox could advance to the World Series with win at Fenway Park in Games 4 and 5 on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Derrick Henry scored his third touchdown with 3:05 left, and the Tennessee Titans stopped Josh Allen on a fourth-down quarterback sneak in the final seconds to beat Buffalo 34-31. The Bills' four-game winning streak was snapped. The AFC East leaders drove to the Titans 3 on their final possession and could have sent the game to overtime with a field goal, but instead went for the win, and didn’t execute. On fourth down, the rugged quarterback moved from the shotgun to take the snap from under center. Tennessee’s defensive line surged forward to meet Allen, whose legs went out from under him.

NBA – NBA preview: Silver says he hopes Irving gets vaccinated

Adam Silver, the basketball fan, would prefer to see Kyrie Irving on the court again with the Brooklyn Nets as soon as possible. Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, would prefer to see Irving vaccinated. On the eve of the league’s 75th anniversary season, the third to be impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, Silver said Monday that he hopes Irving — one of the few players in the league who has not yet chosen to be vaccinated — changes his mind before long and clears a path to get back on the floor with the Nets.

NBA – NBA hires Danielle Scott, league's 6th female full-time ref

Danielle Scott has become the sixth NBA female referee. The daughter of college basketball officials was promoted Monday to the full-time NBA staff referee roster. She joins Lauren Holtkamp-Sterling, Ashley Moyer-Gleich, Simone Jelks, Natalie Sago and Jenna Schroeder. That’s the most female refs the NBA has ever had on staff at one time. Scott says she hopes the notion of female referees in the league no longer seems unusual.

Bengals 34, Lions 11 – Joe Burrow throws 3 TDs as Bengals rout Lions 34-11

Joe Burrow tied a career high with three touchdown passes, helping the Cincinnati Bengals rout the Detroit Lions 34-11 Sunday. The Bengals already have four wins to equal last year’s total and to double their victories from 2019 during coach Zac Taylor’s debut season. Detroit is the NFL's only winless team. The Lions could not rally as they did in closely contested setbacks against San Francisco, Baltimore and Minnesota. They failed to score until Austin Seibert made a 35-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter.

Packers 24, Bears 14 – Rodgers throws 2 TDs, runs for 1 as Packers beat Bears 24-14

Aaron Rodgers threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, leading the Green Bay Packers to a 24-14 victory over the Chicago Bears. The Packers (5-1) beat the Bears (3-3) for the 20th time in 23 games counting the playoffs and improved to 22-5 with Rodgers as the starter against Chicago. They also prevented Chicago from tying them for the NFC North lead. Rodgers shook off a sluggish start, throwing a 1-yard touchdown to Allen Lazard in the second quarter and a 12-yarder to Aaron Jones in the third. Rodgers put the Bears away after Justin Fields threw a 5-yard touchdown to Darnell Mooney as he scored from the 6 to cap a 75-yard drive.

Colts 31, Texans 3 – Indianapolis gets in sync with 31-3 victory over Houston

Carson Wentz threw two touchdown passes and Jonathan Taylor ran for another score for the Colts in a 31-3 dismantling of the Texans. Wentz threw a 28-yard TD pass to Mo Alie-Cox for a advantage in 17-3 third-quarter. The Colts have followed an 1-3 start with consecutive wins, and Houston has dropped five in a row since a season-opening win.

Courtney Vandersloot added 10 points and 15 assists for the Sky, who won the series 3-1, rallying from a 72-65 deficit with 4:42 left. Chicago scored the next nine points to take a two-point lead on Stefanie Dolson’s layup. She added another basket to make it 76-72 with 45.8 seconds left. Vandersloot then scored in the lane to seal the win setting off the celebration. As the final buzzer sounded, Parker sprinted to the corner of the court and hugged her family with tears in her eyes.
