Eloy Jiménez hit two homers with five RBIs for the second straight game, Tim Anderson led off with a home run for the second day in a row, and the Chicago White Sox cruised past the Minnesota Twins 11-1. Lucas Giolito pitched two-hit ball for eight innings as the White Sox won their fourth in a row. Luis Robert came off the 60-day injured list and delivered an RBI double and single. Jiménez became the first White Sox player with consecutive games of at least two homers and five RBIs, and the first in the majors since Bryce Harper for Washington in 2015. Jiménez has five homers and 14 RBIs in 10 games since his return from the injured list after rupturing a pectoral muscle in spring training.

Brewers at Cubs, PPD – Brewers-Cubs postponed due to rain; DH scheduled for Tuesday

The game between the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Monday night was postponed because of rain. The game was called one hour, 38 minutes after the scheduled start. The contest has been rescheduled for today as part of a split doubleheader.

MLB – Former batboy sues Omar Vizquel alleging sexual harassment

A former minor league batboy has filed a lawsuit accusing longtime major league shortstop Omar Vizquel of sexual harassment during Vizquel’s tenure as manager of the Birmingham Barons, an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. The 25-year-old man filed suit in U.S. District Court in Alabama accusing the 11-time Gold Glove winner of exposing himself multiple times and forcing the man to wash his back in the shower in 2019. The suit says the man is autistic and accuses the White Sox and Double-A Birmingham Barons of violating the Americans With Disabilities Act.

NHL – Longtime Blackhawks analyst Murray says he has cancer

Longtime Chicago Blackhawks radio analyst Troy Murray says he has cancer. Murray says he is confident he will beat the disease. The 59-year-old Murray did not specify the type of cancer he has or provide any other details. He has spent more than two decades as a member of the Blackhawks’ broadcast team. He started as a studio analyst before moving into a TV and then radio color commentary role. He was drafted by Chicago in the third round in 1980 and played 12 seasons with the Blackhawks over two stints.

NHL/Winter Olympics – Lightning's Cooper to coach Canada in Beijing if NHL plays

If NHL players are part of the Beijing Olympics in February, Canada will have a two-time Stanley Cup champion behind its bench. Hockey Canada says Tampa Bay Lightning coach Jon Cooper will be the head of its provisional Olympic coaching staff. Three NHL head coaches were named assistants -- Boston’s Bruce Cassidy, Vegas’ Peter DeBoer and the New York Islanders’ Barry Trotz. Cooper led the Lightning to their second straight Stanley Cup title last month when they defeated the Montreal Canadiens in five games. NHL players were not part of the 2018 Pyeongchang Games after taking part in five straight Olympics. The schedule for the upcoming NHL season leaves room for an Olympic break, but the league says no decision has been made on whether players will compete. –

Eloy Jiménez drove in five runs with two home runs and a double, and the Chicago White Sox beat the crosstown Cubs 9-3 for their first sweep of a three-game series at Wrigley Field since May 2012. Jiménez and Andrew Vaughn hit two-run shots after Tim Anderson led off the game with a solo drive as the White Sox hit the ball hard off Zach Davies in a five-run first-inning. The outburst gave the AL Central leaders a fast start on a warm night with the wind blowing out at the iconic ballpark. Anderson also finished with three hits as the White Sox won their fourth straight and moved 10 ½ games ahead of second-place Cleveland. The Cubs have dropped four straight and 10 of 12.

Indians 7, Tigers 5 – Cabrera gets day off; Zimmer HR lifts Indians past Tigers

Miguel Cabrera got a planned day off as he closes in on his 500th career home run and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Detroit Tigers 7-5. Bradley Zimmer's two-run homer off Erasmo Ramírez broke a seventh-inning tie.  Cabrera has 498 homers and didn’t play as part of Detroit manager A.J. Hinch’s plan to help his slugger get through the season. Bryan Shaw pitched the seventh for the win and Emmanuel Clase worked the ninth for his second save of the series and 16th of the season.

MLB – Another COVID positive for Yankees

Newcomer Anthony Rizzo has become the latest Yankees player to test positive for the coronavirus. The first baseman tested positive after Saturday’s game against Seattle. He went 0 for 4 in the Yankees’ 5-4 victory. Rizzo is the fourth New York player within the past week to be sidelined by COVID-19, joining starting pitchers Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery and catcher Gary Sánchez. Rizzo is off to a quick start since being acquired from the Chicago Cubs on July 29. He is hitting .281 with three homers and six RBIs in nine games for New York. The Yankees recalled Luke Voit from the injured list to take Rizzo’s roster spot.

Hall of Fame – Peyton's Place is Hall of Fame, with Woodson, Megatron

Peyton’s Place is now in Canton, Ohio, at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The only five-time NFL MVP and a two-time Super Bowl winner who left the game five years ago with a slew of passing records was enshrined with other members of the class of 2021. The stadium rocked with cheers from fans in Colts blue or Broncos orange _ the two franchises he took to the top _ when Manning was introduced. Joining Manning in this year’s class were two other first-time eligibles, defensive back Charles Woodson _ who beat out Manning for the 1997 Heisman Trophy _ and receiver Calvin Johnson.

Hall of Fame – Versatile DB Charles Woodson enters Hall of Fame

For 18 seasons, whether playing cornerback or safety, Charles Woodson was as dependable as they come.  And now he has been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The 1998 Defensive Rookie of the Year with Oakland who won Defensive Player of the Year honors 11 years later as a Packer, Woodson never cared where he played as long as he was on the field. Wherever he was, as Aaron Rodgers said, Woodson “understood his craft” perfectly. Woodson, who spent 11 seasons with the Raiders and seven with Green Bay, where he won a Super Bowl, had 65 interceptions and also was a dynamic punt returner. In a emotionally charged speech, Woodson cited his family — mother, father, brothers, sister, wife, children — and told them, “Without you, I'm not here.”  “Football is what I did, but these people I mentioned are who I am. Build your legend.

Tigers 8, Red Sox 1 – Reyes 2 triples, Tigers beat slumping Red Sox 8-1

Victor Reyes tripled twice and drove in three runs, Tarik Skubal pitched five scoreless innings, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox 8-1. Skubal allowed five hits and struck out four. Robbie Grossman hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first. He departed the game prior to the third with a left elbow contusion after getting hit by a pitch. Jonathan Schoop contributed two hits and two RBIs for Detroit. The Red Sox lost for the sixth time in seven games and dropped 1 1/2 games behind idle Tampa Bay in the AL East.

Royals 3, White Sox 2 – Lynch, 4 relievers lead Royals to 3-2 win over White Sox

Daniel Lynch and four relievers held the Chicago White Sox in check, and Emmanuel Rivera’s line drive was misplayed into an early two-run double that helped the Kansas City Royals hang on for a 3-2 victory. Kansas City won its second consecutive game, while the AL Central-leading White Sox lost for the ninth time in their last 14. Chicago has scored two runs or fewer in three of its past four games. Jake Brentz worked a hitless ninth inning for his first major league save. Jose Abreu homered for the White Sox.

Rockies 6, Cubs 5 – Still here: Story homers twice, Rockies beat Cubs 6-5

Trevor Story hit two home runs, including a go-ahead two-run drive in the fifth inning, and the Colorado Rockies hung on to beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5. Sam Hilliard and Connor Joe also homered and Brendan Rodgers extended his hitting streak to 12 games with two singles. The Rockies took two of three from the Cubs. Wilson Contreras hit a two-run double in Chicago’s four-run fifth. The Cubs concluded their six-game trip with a 2-4 mark after a series of trade deadline deals that saw the departure of stalwarts Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Javier Báez. Story was the subject of trade rumors before the deadline.

Steelers 16, Cowboys 3 – Steelers use strong 2nd half to beat Cowboys 16-3

The Pittsburgh Steelers followed a stumbling first half with a strong final 30 minutes to beat Dallas 16-3 in the first NFL preseason game in two years. Last season’s exhibition games were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So maybe the enthusiastic crowd was an indication that even for a match between teams using very few regulars, the hunger for pro football has not faded. Or maybe it was simply a matter of two of the league’s most popular franchises being on the field in the Hall of Fame game, regardless of how many backups were in action.

NFL – Cousins returns to Vikings quarterback room after quarantine

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins has been activated from the COVID-19 reserve list. He completed the NFL’s required five-day quarantine for unvaccinated players deemed a high-risk close contact with an infected person. The Vikings also activated Nate Stanley to bring their quarterback cadre close to full strength after a tenuous stretch of training camp practices. Rookie Kellen Mond tested positive and remains on the reserve list away from the team. The absence of Cousins, Mond and Stanley left Jake Browning as the only quarterback Saturday. Browning is vaccinated.

Eduardo Rodriguez struck out 10 in five shutout innings and the Boston Red Sox snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Detroit Tigers. Rodriguez allowed two hits and four walks in helping Boston end its longest losing streak of the season. J.D. Martinez, Enrique Hernandez and Jarren Duran homered for the Red Sox. Boston pitchers struck out 18 batters, with Matt Barnes getting two as he pitched a perfect ninth for his 24th save in 28 chances. Casey Mize gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk in five innings. He struck out three and allowed all three Boston homers.

Royals 9, White Sox 1 – Pérez hits 2-run HR as Royals roll to 9-1 win over White Sox

Salvador Pérez hit a two-run homer and the Kansas City Royals went deep four times to beat the Chicago White Sox 9-1. Kansas City ended a four-game losing streak, while the AL Central-leading White Sox lost for the eighth time in 13 games. Royals starter Carlos Hernández yielded only two hits over five innings in beating the White Sox for the second time in seven days. Hernández has allowed six hits while striking out 10 in his last 11 innings against Chicago. Pérez launched his 27th homer in the third, tying his career high.

Cubs 3, Rockies 2 – Wisdom's 3-run double lifts Cubs over Rockies, 3-2

Patrick Wisdom hit a three-run double to back a solid outing from Alec Mills and lead the Chicago Cubs past the Colorado Rockies 3-2. Mills overcame a rocky start to pitch six innings and earn his first win since July 7, and Wisdom finished with three hits. Manuel Rodriguez gave up a two-out single in the ninth but got Sam Hilliard on a comebacker to pick up his first career save. Raimel Tapia had two doubles and nearly made a run-saving catch in the sixth for Colorado.

MLB – MLB season starts March 31, again with every team scheduled

Major League Baseball will open the 2022 season on March 31 and will try for the fourth time to have every team play its first game on the same day for the first time since 1968. The league released the full schedule on Wednesday. MLB tried to have all 30 clubs play on the same opening day for three of the past four seasons, but it never happened because of weather and other factors. Complicating matters next year is a potential work stoppage. The collective bargaining agreement between MLB and the players’ association expires Dec. 1. Given the acrimonious relationship between the sides, a lockout or strike appears possible.

If you’re looking for stars during Hall of Fame enshrinement week, concentrate on the museum itself and the inductions this weekend. You won’t find many, if any, stars playing Thursday night when the NFL preseason begins with Dallas playing Pittsburgh. Indeed, with the number of preseason games reduced from four to three, with the exception of the Cowboys and Steelers, the opportunity to see the big names on the field will be diminished further. For Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, the Hall of Fame game carries importance as a trial for guys on the back end of the roster, and for backups at key positions.

Cabrera added a single, giving him 2,944 career hits and moving him one ahead of Frank Robinson for 36th place all-time. The Red Sox have lost a season-high five straight games, including an 0-4 start to a 10-game road trip. Tigers starter Wily Peralta allowed two runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings, and five relievers combined to shut out the Red Sox in the final 4 1/3 innings. Gregory Soto pitched the ninth for his 12th save in 13 chances.

White Sox 7, Royals 1 – Cease blanks Royals for 6 innings, White Sox win 7-1

Dylan Cease allowed one hit in six scoreless innings, matching a season high with 11 strikeouts, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-1 on Tuesday night. Tim Anderson and Andrew Vaughn homered for AL Central-leading Chicago, which had dropped three of four at fourth-place Kansas City last week. Cease walked two and threw 103 pitches, allowing only Edward Olivares’ leadoff single in the third inning, to nab his first win since June 30.

Rockies 13, Cubs 6 – Díaz hits slam, Freeland earns win as Rockies top Cubs 13-6

Elías Díaz hit a grand slam, Kyle Freeland got his first win in more than a month and the Colorado Rockies beat the Chicago Cubs 13-6. Freeland pitched five innings and earned his first win since June 28 before being removed after the fifth inning with a left foot contusion. He was hit by a line drive with one out in the fifth, finished the inning and was replaced after throwing warmup pitches in the sixth. He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five. Sam Hilliard also homered and C.J. Cron had three hits and three RBIs for the Rockies. Ian Happ homered for the Cubs, who played most of the game without manager David Ross. Ross was ejected in the second inning.

NBA – AP source: DeRozan agrees to $85 million deal with Bulls

The Chicago Bulls made another major upgrade, acquiring high-scoring small forward DeMar DeRozan a day after adding point guard Lonzo Ball. The Bulls agreed Tuesday to a three-year, $85 million contract with DeRozan as part of a sign-and-trade with San Antonio. That's according to a person familiar with the deal who spoke on the condition of anonymity. It was not clear what the Spurs are getting in return. A four-time All-Star, DeRozan has averaged more than 20 points in each of the past eight seasons with Toronto and San Antonio.

Chicago Bears Coach Matt Nagy is so confident his starting quarterback is ready he wouldn’t be too nervous if the NFL decided to open the season this week. That’s how strong an impression veteran Andy Dalton is making. The Bears open the preseason Aug. 14 against Miami, and their first regular-season game is Sept. 12 at the Los Angeles Rams. Dalton and prized rookie Justin Fields have plenty of work to do. All eyes are on the quarterbacks as the Bears get ready.

NHL – Blackhawks pledge to release findings of abuse investigation

The Chicago Blackhawks have pledged to release the findings of an independent investigation into allegations a then-assistant coach sexually assaulted two players in 2010. CEO Danny Wirtz told team employees that in a memo. General manager Stan Bowman is among team officials who were reportedly in a 2010 meeting about the allegations and did nothing about it. Bowman reiterated he will cooperate in the investigation. Asked about recusing himself as USA Hockey's GM for the upcoming Olympics, Bowman says the organization and Blackhawks have had discussions he is not a part of.

NFL – Colts' QB Carson Wentz out 5-12 weeks with broken foot

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz is expected to miss 5 to 12 weeks because a broken left foot. Coach Frank Reich made the announcement following his return to the practice field after missing all of last week's workouts because of a positive COVID-19 test. Reich says Wentz will have surgery to remove a piece of bone Monday afternoon. Reich says doctors found Wentz had broken the foot years ago, probably in high school, and that a piece of bone came loose when he hurt the foot last Thursday. For now, Indy plans to use Jacob Eason as the starter. Eason was a fourth-round draft pick in 2020 and has not appeared in an NFL game, regular season or preseason.

NFL – Rams' Stafford stops passing after hitting thumb on helmet

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford stopped passing after hitting the thumb of his throwing hand on the helmet of a defensive player near the end of practice Monday. Coach Sean McVay is hopeful it is nothing serious. Stafford was looked at by trainers. He was able to grip a towel and his helmet, which is why McVay was hopeful. The thumb is the same one that Stafford had surgery on during the offseason after he played most of the second half of last season with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in the thumb.

NFL – NFL Alumni, CDC fight COVID-19 vaccination hesitancy

NFL Alumni Health announced Monday that in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention it is kicking off an outreach and education initiative to help build COVID-19 vaccination confidence. The campaign features some 40 current and retired NFL players who will encourage the public to make the decision to protect themselves, their families and their communities by getting vaccinated. Marshall Faulk says his message is for those hesitant to get the vaccine to seek their doctor's advice and ignore all the chatter on social media. Rod Woodson says education will lead to more jabs in the arm.

NBA – AP sources: Pelicans send Ball to Bulls, get Hornets' Graham

Two people familiar with the situation say the New Orleans Pelicans are sending Lonzo Ball to Chicago and acquiring Devonte Graham from Charlotte as part of separate sign-and-trade agreements. The deal for Ball will send Bulls guards Tomas Satoransky and Garrett Temple to the Pelicans. New Orleans is sending a lottery-protected 2022 first-round draft choice to the Hornets. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because trades can't become official until Friday under NBA rules. The Klutch Sports agency says Ball agreed to a four-year deal worth $85 million.

Tigers 6, Orioles 2 – Haase, Tigers shake off rough start in 6-2 win over Orioles

Eric Haase hit a two-run double in a three-run first inning and the Detroit Tigers went on to a 6-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Detroit earned a split of the four-game series, improving to 30-24 at home this season. The Tigers tied a major league record with 59 home losses in 2019, baseball’s most recent full season. Detroit's Tyler Alexander fell behind 2-0 after four batters, but didn’t allow another run in four innings of work. Erasmo Ramirez pitched two scoreless innings to pick up his first major league win since Sept. 3, 2018, when he beat the Orioles as a member of the Seattle Mariners.

White Sox 2, Indians 1 – Goodwin homer in 9th gives White Sox 2-1 win over Indians

Brian Goodwin homered with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Chicago White Sox a 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday. Goodwin hit a 3-1 pitch from Nick Wittgren over the wall in right for his sixth home run of the season. Liam Hendriks allowed just one hit in the ninth to complete a scoreless six-inning stint by the Chicago bullpen. Reynaldo Lopez allowed one hit in three innings followed by Aaron Bummer and Craig Kimbrel, who each worked a hitless inning. Chicago won two of three in the series to extend its AL Central lead to nine games. Myles Straw homered for the Indians.

Nationals 6, Cubs 5 – Hernandez's HR in 9th gives Nats 6-5 win over Cubs

Yadiel Hernandez’s solo shot in the ninth inning — his second homer of the day — gave the Washington Nationals a 6-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Hernandez’s four-hit day helped the Nationals overcome three home runs by Rafael Ortega of the Cubs. Washington took two of three in this series against Chicago following trade deadline selloffs that scattered many of the players who helped both teams win the World Series recently. Ortega tied a franchise record for homers in a game, leading off with a shot to right-center before adding two-run blasts in the sixth and eighth.

NHL – 'Hey Chicago': Fleury commits to playing for Blackhawks

Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury has committed to playing for the Blackhawks this season, setting aside his reservations about leaving Vegas. The Blackhawks posted a video on their Twitter account of Fleury standing in front of a small jet, saying he's ready to get to work. The Blackhawks also announced a video news conference featuring Fleury and team president Stan Bowman on Monday. Fleury spent a few days contemplating his future after being traded to Chicago by the Golden Knights last week. The 36-year-old Fleury had hoped to finish his career with Vegas, where he played the past four seasons.

NHL – Sharks' Kane denies game-fixing allegations from wife

San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane has denied allegations his wife made on social media that he bet on NHL games, including against his own team. Kane responded to allegations made the previous day from the Instagram account of his wife, Anna. Kane says he has never bet on hockey games and never thrown a game. The NHL is investigating the allegations and Kane says he will cooperate.

Miguel Cabrera hit two solo home runs, Casey Mize pitched seven solid innings and the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-2. Those were career homers Nos. 496 and 497 for Cabrera. Mize held the Orioles scoreless until they pushed across an unearned run in the seventh. The rookie right-hander, the No. 1 overall draft pick three years ago, allowed four hits and struck out two. It was his first victory since June 26, though the Tigers had been limiting his innings since then. Orioles starter Alexander Wells allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings.

Royals 5, White Sox 0 – Hernandez 6 innings for Royals in 5-0 win over White Sox

Carlos Hernandez pitched six scoreless innings, Salvador Perez homered again and the Kansas City Royals beat the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox 5-0. Perez put the Royals ahead with his 25th homer, a two-run shot in the first inning off Carlos Rodon. Kansas City won three out of four games in the series that ended with a blistering matinee. It was 95 degrees at the start of the game with a heat index of 106. Hernandez allowed just four hits, with one walk and four strikeouts. Rodon gave up four runs on eight hits over four taxing innings.

Reds 7, Cubs 4 – Votto homers in record 6th game in row as Reds beat Cubs 7-4

Joey Votto has set a Cincinnati Reds franchise record by homering in six consecutive games. Votto went deep again as Cincinnati beat the Chicago Cubs 7-4. The 37-year-old Votto homered six times in the four-game series at Wrigley Field, and has eight home runs over his record stretch. Votto’s 20th homer of the season was a two-run shot in the first, when he hit a fastball from Alec Mills into the center field bleachers. Patrick Wisdom and Wilson Contreras homered for the three Cubs runs off winner Luis Castillo, who had only given up three runs total in his previous four starts.

MLB – Yankees get Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo, cash for 2 minor leaguers

The New York Yankees have acquired Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo and cash for two minor leaguers in their second major trade this week for desperately needed left-handed bats. The swap came ahead of the Major League Baseball trade deadline Friday at 4 p.m. Earlier in the day, the Yankees announced they had gotten All-Star slugger Joey Gallo from Texas. Rizzo is batting .248 with 14 home runs and 40 RBIs. The 31-year-old Rizzo is a three-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner. He can become a free agent after this season. New York is fourth in the AL wild-card chase for two spots. The Yankees lost 14-0 at Tampa Bay on Thursday.

MLB – Cubs deal righty reliever Tepera to crosstown White Sox

Reliable reliever Ryan Tepera is heading from the North Side to the South Side. The struggling Chicago Cubs traded the 33-year-old right-hander to the AL Central-leading White Sox on Thursday for minor league lefty Bailey Horn, giving the Sox some bullpen help for the rest of the season and maybe the playoffs, too. It was the second trade of the day for the White Sox, who also acquired slugging second baseman Cesar Hernandez from the Cleveland Indians. Tepera is 0-2 with a 2.91 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings this season and has allowed just one home run over his last 36 appearances.

Jeimer Candelario and Eric Haase each drove in three runs and the Detroit Tigers, despite giving up seven homers and not hitting any, outlasted the Minnesota Twins 17-14. Detroit led 10-0 in the fourth in an MLB game that wound with a score more fitting for an NFL matchup between the Lions and Vikings. After the Tigers scored eight times in the top of the fourth, Minnesota got six runs in the bottom half, highlighted by Ryan Jeffers’ grand slam. Down 13-6, the Twins scored six more in the eighth on Miguel Sanó’s second homer of the game and drives by Max Kepler, Brent Rooker and Jeffers. Haase’s three-run double in the ninth gave the Tigers another cushion. Jorge Polanco hit a two-run homer in the Twins ninth.

Michael A. Taylor’s two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning drove Hunter Dozier home from second base as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2. The Royals had tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth when Salvador Perez hit his 24th homer, a solo shot to left-center off AL saves leader Liam Hendriks. Scott Barlow, who took over in the 10th as the fifth Royals pitcher, struck out two and walked one. Ryan Burr pitched the final inning for Chicago.

Reds 8, Cubs 2 – Votto extends power surge, Reds roll past Cubs 8-2

Joey Votto homered twice for the second consecutive day, going deep in his fifth straight game to match a Cincinnati record as the Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 8-2. Tyler Mahle tossed six scoreless innings for the Reds, who beefed up their bullpen again by acquiring right-hander Mychal Givens from Colorado before the game. Tyler Stephenson and Shogo Akiyama each had two RBIs, and Jesse Winker doubled twice and drove in a run. The 37-year-old Votto is the ninth hitter in Reds history, dating to 1900, to homer in five straight games. It was his 15th career multi-homer game.

NFL – Lions coach Dan Campbell was sleepless before 1st practice

Dan Campbell was so fired up on the eve of his first practice with the Detroit Lions that he did not get any rest. Campbell says he didn't sleep at all, but said he has plenty of energy. The former New Orleans Saints assistant head coach was emotionally charged six-plus months ago when he was introduced as the new Lions coach after signing a six-year contract. He said the team would be tough, kicking teeth and biting kneecaps off in an eyebrow-raising news conference. Campbell was 5-7 as an interim coach with the Miami Dolphins in 2015.

Miguel Cabrera hit a run-scoring single in the 11th inning after Eric Haase tied the game with a grand slam in the top of the ninth as the Detroit Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 6-5. Cabrera's hit scored automatic runner Jonathan Schoop. The Tigers tied the game with a homer in the ninth inning for the second straight game. Robbie Grossman, who singled to start the ninth-inning comeback, hit a two-run homer on Monday night before Minnesota won 6-5 in 10 innings. Mitch Garver hit a first-inning grand slam for the Twins.

White Sox 5, Royals 3 – Jiménez hits 3-run HR, rallies White Sox past Royals 5-3

Eloy Jiménez logged his first big hit of the season, launching a go-ahead, three-run homer in the eighth inning that sent the Chicago White Sox over the Kansas City Royals 5-3. The 24-year-old slugger, who was the 2019 AL Rookie of the Year and then kept up his power surge during the pandemic-shortened season, tore a pectoral muscle in spring training. He hadn’t played in the majors until going 0 for 4 Monday night. But Jiménez quickly made up for lost time in his second game. After hitting a single in his first at-bat, he came up in the eighth after a two-out intentional walk to Jose Abreu with Chicago trailing 3-2. Jiménez connected for a 459-foot drive to cap a four-run rally for the AL Central leaders.

Reds 7, Cubs 4 – Votto hits 2 more homers as Reds roll past Cubs 7-4

Joey Votto continued his power surge with two home runs and started a dazzling double play as the Cincinnati Reds pulled away to a 7-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Votto has homered in a career-high four consecutive games for the second time, one game shy of the team record. The Reds hit four home runs in winning for the third time in five games. The Cubs lost for the sixth time in their last 10. Cincinnati rookie Vladimir Gutierrez pitched 6 1/3 innings of five-hit ball to earn the win. Cubs starter Adbert Alzolay allowed three home runs in five innings.

NHL – Vegas trades Fleury to Chicago as goalie carousel spins, get Johnson from champs

The Vegas Golden Knights have traded reigning Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to the Chicago Blackhawks. Vegas got minor leaguer Mikael Hakkarainen in return, indicating the move was a salary dump. Fleury counts $7 million against the salary cap next season. Chicago was not on the 36-year-old's 10-team no-trade list. Agent Allan Walsh says Fleury will be taking time to talk to his family and evaluate his hockey future.  Chicago wasn’t done there, the Blackhawks also acquired forward Tyler Johnson from the Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for the contract of injured Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook.  The move by Tampa takes Johnson $5-million contract off the salary cap. Seabrook announced his retirement during the past season citing injury, he is listed on long term injured reserve and his contract does not count in the salary cap calculations.  Seabrook had 3 years left on his contract and will make $6.875 million each year.   The trade also sent a 2023 second round pick from Tampa Bay to Chicago.
