Coloma hosted South Haven Tuesday, Feb. 18...

 

Ryan Franco of Niles High School Wrestling is the WSJM Sports Berrien County Student Athlete of the Week for the week of February 2, 2020.

At the Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference Championships, Ryan won the 130 lbs. title. He earned a bye in the first round, pinned is opponent in :31 in the second round, and won the championship with an 8-0 major decision in the finals.

Ryan is also a member of the Niles Football team and Student Council, and intends to try out for the golf team in the spring. In the classroom, he carries a 3.65 grade point average.

Ryan is the son of Tony and Rayann Franco of Dowagiac.

Other finalists for the week were Javond Ball and Caiden Smith of Niles Wrestling, and Megan Neubecker of Coloma Basketball.

Jackson Calvert of South Haven High School Wrestling is our WSJM Sports Van Buren/Cass Student Athlete of the Week for the week of February 2, 2020.

At the Wolverine Conference Championships, Jackson won the individual 189 lbs. title. He received a bye in the opening round, recorded a pin in the second round, and won the championship match with a 9-4 decision. The 9-4 decision in the final match was a win over the defending conference champion. With his wins, Jackson improved to 35-5 on the season.

Jackson is also a member of the South Haven Football and Baseball teams. In the classroom, he carries a 3.00 grade point average.

Jackson is the son of Michelle Beck-Calvert and Jason Calvert of South Haven.

Another finalist for the week was Trinity Hostetler of Howardsville Christian Basketball.

Dashiande Harris-Moore of Benton Harbor High School Wrestling is the WSJM Sports Berrien County Student Athlete of the Week for the week of January 26, 2020.

Dashiande started the week by going 2-0 at the Berrien Springs Quad. He then ended the week by winning the 160 lbs. Championship at the Greater Berrien County Invitational. He went 3-0 at the county invitational and was honored with the Nathan Broehm Outstanding Wrestler Award. With his performance, he improved to 32-2 on the season.

As a sophomore, Dashiande serves as team captain. In the classroom, he carries a 3.6 grade point average and has hopes of possibly studying engineering or architecture in college.

Dashiande is the son of Ciara Reese of Benton Harbor.

Other finalists for the week were Jamison Zimmerman and Ryan Franco of Niles Wrestling, and Samantha Dietz of Watervliet Basketball.

 

Jared Checkley of Decatur High School Wrestling is our WSJM Sports Van Buren/Cass Student Athlete of the Week for the week of January 26, 2020.

In a Southwest 10 dual against Hartford and Eau Claire, Jared won both of his matches by pin. Later in the week, he won the 171 lbs. Championship at the Greater Berrien County Invitational. Earlier in the season, Jared had picked up his 150th career win and is the team leader in near falls and tech falls.

Jared is also a member of the football and baseball teams, National Honor Society, and Student Council. In the classroom, he carries a 3.7 grade point average.

Jared is the son of Craig and Jill Checkley of Dowagiac.

Other finalists for the week were Megan Nelson of Hartford Basketball, Ben Cerven of Decatur Basketball, and Garrett Heath of South Haven Bowling.
