It started as a typical workday for William Breedlove and William Chandler. The free Black men operated a ferry boat across the Rappahannock River. One day, they ferried a black man who turned out to be an escaped slave. And according to Virginia law the penalty for helping a slave escape was to be sold into slavery.

In the second half of the show we want to share some important reporting from another local podcast called Sacred and Profane. Sacred and Profane is a project of the Race Religion and Democracy Lab at the University of Virginia. This episode is about how we mark and mourn the places in our city where enslaved people were bought and sold.

New Zealand fiddler George Jackson stopped by WTJU to go track by track through his new album, Hair & Hide, with WTJU Folk Director Peter Jones. The album is a mix of fiddle and banjo tunes. Joining George on the album are Wes Corbett, Catherine "BB" Bowness, Jake Blount, Frank Evans, Uma Peters, Joe Overton, and Brad Kolodner.

Three time Grammy winner and Father of modern bluegrass legend Tony Trischka stopped by The Stage at WTJU November 3, 2021 for a visit with WTJU Folk Director Peter Jones. In between the live tunes, they chatted about Tony's almost 60 years of playing banjo.

This week in 1828... Virginia-born former slave Lott Cary had saved up and bought his freedom. He felt it was his mission in life to preach the Gospel to Africans. So when the American Colonization Society established the colony of Liberia, Cary emigrated there with other Black families from Virginia.

This week our “Florida” show features the inspiring story of Desmond Meade’s struggle to right the ship of his life — and his fight to sail the Sunshine State into a future where ex-felons get another shot at political engagement. A MacArthur genius and the director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, Meade is working to get citizens who have served out their sentences their civil rights back.
