Fun Facts:

George finds this song, which he wrote aged 17, makes him cringe now, partly due to the yucky words and partly due to the frighfully gratuitous use of a few notes hinting at a Cliff Richard melody on guitar.

However, the guitars and drums sound great from a production perspective so Paul deserves credit for his part in the making of this.

Andy played the rhythm guitar part on Nicodemus and George played the Ice Maiden.

George was requested to use considerably less dirt on the recording than he used live which disappointed him at the time.

The original sound and live sound for this was utterly filthy.

When Rough Terrain played this live, if Jerry was late getting to the mic with his backing vocal in the chorus it sounded like the band were singing “I’m a two timer.”

The key for this song is F# minor.

This song was written at around 7am on 11th July 1986 after George had been up all night making Subterraineans music with Dean and then walking home through the city of Exeter as the sun was starting to rise one beautiful summer’s day in 1986.

A lot of people seemed to like this song and it was usually played as an encore.

The key is Cm and Jerry’s bassline was arguably his most melodic of the entire Rough Terrain set.

This used to be Rough Terrain’s set opener.

Sometimes they would play it immediately after their cover of Born to be Wild, joining the two songs together.

Jerry’s bassline is mostly just the low-E on his bass, something many bassists would struggle to maintain without Jerry’s discipline.

George wrote this on 17th May 1986 after feeling somewhat disgruntled with the demise of a previous fledgling band, The Masters of Drone.

Originally this was a Now number.

It was composed on 8th November 1982.

George wrote the chords and took the tune to a Now rehearsal where Simon composed the lead guitar parts.

The “Mmmm, thanks!” came about at a rehearsal at the King’s Grammar School, Ottery St Mary, when Pete Rippin, Now’s roadie and main man, handed Mark Drower, Now’s singer and main songwriter, a self-rolled cigarette at the precise moment there was a pause in the guitar thrashings.

Everybody laughed upon the interjection on the cassette and the moment was thus preserved forevermore in future versions of the number.

Each ‘verse’ is different and the 'chorus' is G-C-Bb-D.

To make the frog noises at the beginning, everybody made strange grunting noises and Jerry sloshed some water contained in champaign bucket at The Riverside.

Rough Terrain made four separate tracks of this on the four-track.

The idea for the frog noises came from Marc Greatorex, Now’s drummer.

Exactly why this piece is called Frog is no longer known.

The lead guitar part was recorded at Howell Road on somebody’s Washburn guitar that had been left there.

It was a beautiful instrument, natural wood finish with gorgeous grain, and the strings on it were probably 8 gauge as they were thinner than George’s 9s.

Whoever owned the Washburn must have taken it away soon after the recording as it was never seem again by the band.

The rhythm guitar is played by George on the Ice Maiden.

Normally in a live gig situation Andy would play the rhythm part on Nicodemus.

This song is in the key of E major and was written on 30th December 1986.

Andy recorded his vocals for this at George’s old flat at 19 Haldon Road, Exeter, the scene of many parties.

The two last Elephant Fayres took place in 1985 and 1986 near St Germans in Cornwall.

They were fantastic festivals.

The 1986 Elephant Fayre had a serious outbreak of mud.

George wrote this song on 20th September 1986, the same day that he wrote two others, which was a rare thing in those days.

'Come from the heavens' refers to salvation from alien beings rather than angels or any religious belief.

The key is A major and the guitar solo is recorded backwards.

The synthesizer parts were all recorded in one long take after deciding which sounds to use.

They all come from a Roland synth that may have belonged to either The Sicillians or Freda and had been left at Paul’s Howell Road studio.

It had similarities to the Wasp which George owned, in that it was a digital synth with analogue controls.

When played live this song required heavy use of the smoke machine and strobe where possible.

An early version was once jammed by Wud.

This can be heard as a track called "Jamming" on their Wudsongs album.

The lyrics describe a memory George has, of looking up at clouds in the sky when he was 12.
