Xeyah Martin is the current Executive Director of Empowered Community Development Corporation. It uplifts, and connects Philadelphia’s more vulnerable and often overlooked communities to resources they need to grow and thrive.

While Empowered CDC has traditionally served Southwest Philadelphia, they have expanded their efforts to support residents in West & South Philadelphia.

Dr. Ashley Gripper is the founder of Land Based Jawns (LBJ), a spiritually rooted, Black woman-owned business blending land stewardship, ancestral knowledge, and collective healing. Tanisha Barnes is a community organizer for a a gala LBJ is having in September called The Shape Change Fundraising Gala. This gala on September 19th, and will raise $500,000 to secure land, expand workshops, and grow into a fully resourced educational institution, honoring the legacy of community mentors and visionaries. Dr. Gripper and Tanisha join the show to further discuss the details and significance of this gala.

Kymone Freeman is the founder of We Act Radio. He joins the show to talk about how environmental justice intersects with systemic racism, public health, and safety. He discussed recent developments in DC, President Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops and federal takeover, which many argue target the capital’s predominantly Black neighborhoods, undermining D.C.’s legacy as “Chocolate City,” and escalating anxiety rather than ensuring safety.

Dr. Timothy Golden is a visiting Professor of Philosophy at Whitman College. For 20 years, he was a criminal defense attorney in Philadelphia and in the federal courts. He talks to us about the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the lower 9th ward in New Orleans 20 years ago.

The last stop on our Summer of Freedom tour, leads us to a cornerstone of empowerment and opportunity, the O.I.C. Philadelphia. An amazing organization founded in 1964 by the visionary Civil Rights Leader Leon Sullivan.
