The Powerball jackpot is on a roll for the holidays. No one matched all six numbers in Saturday night's drawing so Monday's jackpot is now worth an estimated 875-million dollars. Lottery officials say that ranks as the seventh biggest in Powerball history. The odds of hitting the jackpot are roughly one in 292-million.
Will County Officials have released the names of the two people arrested in connection with the body of a baby found buried in a shallow grave in Wilmington late last week. Will County Sheriff's Police report they got information Thursday about a possible buried baby on a piece of property in the 19-hundred block of Roberts Road in Wilmington . In a press release, deputies say the informant told police a 36-year-old woman had given birth to the baby and it's remains were buried on the property. Friday morning, Will County deputies took several people into custody and the property was searched. That search allegedly turned up the remains of an infant, wrapped in a plastic bag and cloth, buried about three-feed deep in what they say appeared to be an Old-Style beer box. Will County Deputies say they arrested 36-year-old Nicole Pokrzywa of Wilmington and 38-year-old William Cosmen of Manhattan on preliminary charges of Desecration of a Corpse. Reports say other charges are pending the outcome of an autopsy on the child.
The City of Kankakee has announced the Grand Marshal for next Saturday’s Christmas Parade. Mayor Chris Curtis shared the news with us at Monday night’s city council meeting. City of Kankakee’s Christmas Parade starts at four thirty in the afternoon Saturday, December 13th in Downtown Kankakee.
Rensselaer Indiana Police report an arrest following a Friday search warrant. In a press release, Rensselaer Police say their department along with Jasper County Sheriff's Police and agents from the US Marshals Services served a search warrant at a home in the 400 block of North McKinley. That search warrant reportedly resulted in the arrest of 21-year-old Devaughn who was wanted on several outstanding warrants, including charges related to an armed robbery and escape. Reports say Credit is also a suspect in an ongoing investigation by Rensselaer Police.

Park Forest Police Officer Passes Away
The Park Forest Police Department is mourning the passing of a beloved officer. Park Forest Detective Tim Jones has died, nearly a decade after he was shot in the line of duty in March 2016. He was 24 years old at the time of the shooting, which left him paralyzed. The department praised Jones, saying he "will always be an inspiration and a reminder of the power of strength, faith, and the unwavering support of family and loved ones."
Kentland, Indiana Man Arrested on Sex Charges
Rensselaer Police report the arrest of a Kentland man after he allegedly tried to meet up wit a 13-year-old girl for sex. In a press release, Rensselaer Police say they were called November 23rd by a woman who said she was with a group of people that pose as underage children online in an attempt to capture child predators. The woman told police she'd been posing as a 13-year-old girl when she arranged to meet a man near a hotel at State Road 114 and I-65. When the man arrived the group confronted him and he allegedly left them and walked to a nearby convenience store. Rensselaer Police reportedly confronted 47-year-old Jeremy Wilkinson who was wanted on a pair of outstanding warrants. Wilkinson had allegedly sent texts to the supposed 13-year-old girl saying he wanted to meet her for sex. Wilkinson was arrested by Rensselaer Police on the warrants and charges of child solicitation.
Ex-Orland Park Cop Wins Lawsuit
The Village of Orland Park is settling a racial discrimination lawsuit filed by a former police officer. Officials say the village settled with William Sanchez for 524-thousand-dollars. Sanchez sued over allegations the village's police department denied him a promotion to lieutenant due to racial discrimination. He also claimed that he was fired for lodging a complaint about the matter in January 2024. Sanchez served as an officer for nearly two decades.
Will County Board Candidate Removed from Ballot
A Will County Electoral Board is leaving a candidate off the Democratic primary ballot for Will County Board. The electoral board voted this week that Homer Glen resident Kevin Koukol can't appear on the ballot for incorrectly listing the wrong district on his statement of candidacy. Three people filed to run in the March Democratic primary for District 4. Following a complaint by one of the candidates, it was determined that Koukol wrote that he was running for District 6 on his candidacy papers.
Know the Signs of Hypothermia and Frostbite
With the arrival of low temps and frosty wind chills, Riverside Nurse Practitioner Cheryl Hansen gave us some tips on what to look out for when it comes to hypothermia and frostbite. Hansen added that people with heart disease risk factors should watch out for signs of a heart attack while shoveling snow.
Holiday Candle Safety
The holiday season brings with it special issues when it comes to fire safety. Manteno Fire Protection District Fire Chief Richard Peterson reminds us there are certain things to remember when it comes to the safe use of candles during the holiday season. Chief Peterson says you should always remember to keep open flames out of the reach of your children and pets. He suggests using alternatives to open flame candles like battery powered candles or candle warmers as an alternative to traditional open flame candles.
Economic Alliance of Kankakee County Encourages you to Shop Local
It's less than three weeks until Christmas, and in a recent conversation with our Mike Tomano, Economic Alliance of Kankakee County President and CEO Angela Morrey reminded listeners to shop local this holiday season. Morrey went on to say there are more than five-thousand retail jobs

The Powerball jackpot is climbing again after no one won the jackpot in last night's drawing. The estimated jackpot for Saturday's drawing is now 820-million-dollars, with the cash option working out to around 383-million-dollars. Some players did luck out, however, with a two-million-dollar ticket sold in Kentucky and one-million-dollar winers in Florida and California. Tickets are two bucks each, with the odds of hitting the jackpot roughly one in 292 million.
Illinois will be celebrating America's 250th Anniversary next year. Speaking at Navy Pier yesterday, Governor JB Pritzker announced a series of statewide initiatives to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. The Illinois America 250 Commission was established to organize a statewide celebration. So far, 68 counties are involved in the planning, and 93 communities have passed resolutions to participate. Hundreds of museums, historic sites, and cultural institutions are already hosting exhibits, tours, performances, and festivals tied to the anniversary.
The defense attorneys for convicted Delphi double murderer Richard Allen are asking for seven more days to prepare their appeal of his conviction. He was sentenced to 130 years in prison for the deaths of Abby Williams and Lilly German near Delphi's Monon High Bridge in February 2017, and his attorneys have asked for a December 17th deadline to appeal. They currently have until December 10th to get everything before the court. The attorneys are working on an Odinism theory to explain the girls' deaths.

The Manteno Village Board last night voted to increase their tax levy for the new fiscal year. During a public hearing prior to the meeting, Trustee Joel Gesky explained the levy. Trustee Gesky pointed out homeowners in Manteno can have their tax dollars returned to them. During the regular meeting trustees voted unanimously in favor of the new levy
In another sure sign that Christmas isn't far off, the annual Gallery of Trees opens tomorrow at the Kankakee County Historical Society Museum on South 8th Avenue in Kankakee. Museum Executive Director Veronica Featherston says it's the 47th year for the display. The museum is open from nine in the morning until seven at night Thursdays through Sundays, but they'll be closed on Christmas Day.
During Monday night's Manteno Village Board meeting, Mayor Annette Lamore read trustees a letter she'd recently received from the Village Fire Protection District. The letter went on to say the plant had yet to establish a promised fully trained and equipped industrial fire brigade, the facilities emergency action plan has yet to be finalized, and sprinkler inspection reports have yet to be filed by the company among other concerns. Trustee Joel Gesky moved the next meeting of the Properties and Recreation committee to Monday night at six and to invite the Fire Chief and Gotion management to the meeting to address the issues.
Kankakee Township Fire were called out to fight a garage fire east on Route 17 Monday night. According to reports, firefighters were dispatched to the blaze just before 6 Monday night. When they arrived, they could see heavy smoke coming from the garage. Crews had the main fire knocked out within fifteen minutes and completely extinguished within about an hour. No one was injured in the fire. City of Kankakee, Bradley, and Aroma Park Fire departments assisted Kankakee Township fire.
40th District State Senator Patrick Joyce continues his annual holiday card drive to spread cheer this holiday season for residents at local long-term care facilities. Senator Joyce is encouraging residents of the 40th District to write handmade or store-bought cards to help bring joy to older adults who may be feeling lonely or isolated during the holidays. Cards can be mailed or delivered now through December 15th to Joyce’s office on South Wall Street in Kankakee. For in-person card deliveries, you have to schedule an appointment with Joyce’s office by calling 708-756-0882 for drop off times and information. Kids are encouraged to participate as well.
The City of Kankakee and the Kankakee County States Attorney's office have teamed up to offer a reward for information leading to an arrest in the murder of Robert Green the third. In a Facebook post, the Kankakee City Police Department says the 10-thousand-dollar reward will be paid to the first person to provide legitimate and independently verifiable information that directly leads to the arrest of those responsible for Green's murder. Anyone with information is urged to contact Kankakee City Police at 815-933-0478.

Bourbonnais trustees last night took the first steps toward levying taxes for the Village for the new fiscal year. Village Finance Director Tara Latz. Latz credited increased property values for the decrease in taxing rates and reminded Village residents that Village taxes amount to about five percent of a homeowners total tax bill. Trustees heard the first reading of the ordinance last night. There'll be a public hearing before the December 15th meeting where trustees will finally vote on the ordinance.
During last night's Bourbonnais Village Board meeting, trustees heard a presentation from the Police Department about a program they hope to institute early in the new year. Bourbonnais Police Commander Brent Barrie said the first of it's kind program in Kankakee County would allow families with someone in the house with special needs to register with the Village so first responders would have prior knowledge of that need before arriving at their home for any type of incident. In a press release Bourbonnais Police noted the program would be particularly helpful for homes in the village with someone that is uncommunicative or someone with dementia. Commander Barrie hopes to have the program up and running in early 2026.
The Lake County Indiana Sheriff's Department says a missing 14-year-old from unincorporated Crown Point has been found. In a Facebook post, Deputies say they were notified November 23rd of the missing teen, but were unable to find them after an extensive search. The post goes on to say Monday evening they were told law enforcement near Baton Rouge Louisiana had located the teen and they were alive. Lake County Indiana authorities continue to investigate the child's disappearance.
A Chicago city employee accused of threatening a Republican state Senator from Freeport will remain in custody. Joseph Haggerty was denied release from the Stephenson County Jail yesterday ahead of his trial. State police say Senator Andrew Chesney contacted authorities in September after receiving threats from Haggerty, who faces two counts of Threating a Public Official. The threats followed Chesney's critical comments about Governor Pritzker.
Illinois is honoring Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day this weekend. State and U.S. flags will be flown at half staff on Sunday to remember the heroes who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. It is also in tribute to all the service members who sacrificed for the preservation of our rights and freedoms.

Several Illinois High School Association state championship football games are being moved to this week following this weekend's winter storm. The IHSA announced that the postponed Class 6A and Class 5A state title games will be played tomorrow at Illinois State's Hancock Stadium in Normal. The Class 8A and Class 7A games will be played at Northern Illinois' Huskie Stadium on Wednesday.

Winter Storm Predicted this Weekend
A winter storm is expected to hit a large portion of Illinois and Indiana this weekend. The National Weather Service says heavy snow will likely begin falling tomorrow, with up to six inches possible in some parts. A winter storm watch will be in effect throughout the day. The hazardous conditions could make travel very difficult.
Car Windows Broken on Kankakee's West Side
Several windows on someone's car were smashed on Kankakee's West side Tuesday. According to Kankakee City Police reports, the incident happened sometime between 7 and 8 Tuesday night in the 1100 block of West Jeffrey Street. The victim showed police that not only the front and back windshield of her car were smashed by someone but the two left side windows of the car were completely broken as well. Apparently nothing was stolen from inside the car.
Chicago Man Arrested in Manteno for Aggravated DUI
A Chicago man was arrested on I-57 near Manteno Tuesday night for aggravated driving under the influence while speeding well over the legal limit. According to Illinois State Police, 35 year old Ricardo C. Blackwell of Chicago was stopped by troopers on I-57 northbound at milepost 322 near Manteno around 11:16 Tuesday night for speeding 96 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour zone. Blackwell was arrested and charged with a DUI, aggravated speeding, among other charges.
Illinois Attorney General to Sue Federal Government over SNAP Benefits
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul is joining a group of attorneys general in suing the federal government for cutting off SNAP benefits for immigrants. Raoul and the coalition filed a lawsuit in order to block new guidance from the USDA which prevents certain legal immigrants from receiving food assistance, including permanent residents who were granted asylum or admitted as refugees. The group argues that the guidance contradicts federal law and could impose massive financial penalties on states.
Riverside Medical Center Receives Gold Tier Status
Riverside Medical Center has received a Gold Tier ranking from the Illinois Department of Public Health. According to a press release, Riverside was recognized with Gold Tier status, as the hospital has implemented all key priorities identified by the IDPH, including leadership commitment, accountability, expert pharmaceutical knowledge, tracking and reporting, and education for healthcare providers and patients. Fewer than twenty percent of all Illinois hospitals have achieved this recognition. Riverside is the only hospital in the region to have achieved gold tier status.
Latest on Indiana Congressional Redistricting
The U.S. Speaker of the House is expected to speak with Indiana House Republicans- potentially about redistricting. Reports indicate House Speaker Mike Johnson will have a conference call with Republican state lawmakers from the Hoosier state. The call is expected to happen Saturday- just days before elected officials reconvene to consider drawing new Congressional maps. The Indiana House reconvenes Monday, and the Indiana Senate will gather a week later.
Thanksgiving Weekend Travel Tips
It’s the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend and that means there’ll be a lot of people on the road. Kankakee County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Trent Bukowski has some tips for safe holiday travel. The National Safety Council says more than 500 people are expected to lose their lives in crashes over the Thanksgiving Holiday period.

Kankakee City Police have provided an update on Sunday night's Homicide investigation of a Chicago man on East Court Street. According to a press release, surveillance footage shows 20 year old Donnie Smith of Chicago exit the store, remove a handgun from his waistband, and fire at the driver of a Buick sitting in the parking lot. The driver of the Buick fired back at Smith, striking him several times, then drove off. Smith later died of his injuries at the hospital. Investigators located the Buick yesterday morning around 10:30 inside a garage in the 200 block of South Chicago Avenue. The car has since been seized by police. On Monday night, the driver of the Buick arrived at the Kankakee Police Department with legal counsel to speak with investigators. The person of interest provided a statement consistent with the events of the shooting death. The person was then released pending further investigation and review by the Kankakee County State's Attorney's office. Motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
Most of Illinois and Indiana will be dealing with very windy conditions today. The National Weather Service says wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour are expected in the region. Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines, resulting in widespread power outages. Travel could be difficult. A wind advisory will be in effect for much of the day.
A beloved Kankakee area journalist and author has passed away. Jack Klasey died Tuesday at Saint Mary's Hospital in Kankakee at the age of 86. Klasey, who was born and raised in Chicago, moved to Kankakee in the 1960s to work as a reporter for The Daily Journal. Aside from his popular local history column, Klasey authored many books and was one of the Board of Directors for the Kankakee County Historical Society for several years. Visitation for Klasey will be held this Sunday from 2 to 6 at Clancy Gernon in Bourbonnais. A memorial mass will take place 10 Monday morning at Saint John Paul the second's East Campus.
Bradley Mayor Mike Watson tells us there is an iconic brand that wants to be involved with the indoor water park the village plans to start building soon. While Mayor Watson said he couldn't tell us exactly who this well known brand is that wants to be a part of the new water park, he did say that multiple generations are very familiar with this brand. Another clue he gave us was that he recently interviewed with this brand in Florida. More details should hopefully be announced at the next Bradley Village Board meeting December 8th.
It’s the start of the holiday travel season. If you’re going to be hitting the road, Bradley Police Officer Megan Lanie has a few things for you to remember. The National Safety Council says some 500 people will die on the nation's roadways this holiday season.

A fight at a Junior High Basketball game in Bradley led to the arrest of a Saint Anne man Thursday night. According to police reports, Bradley officers along with Kankakee County Sheriff's deputies and Bourbonnais police responded to Bradley Central School in the 200 block of North Wabash Avenue around 6:30 Thursday night in reference to a fight in the gym during a boys basketball game. Officers learned that there was an altercation between Bradley Center and Saint Anne basketball teams towards the end of the game. The fight eventually led fans to leave the stands and walk down to the basketball court. 18 year old Quinton M. Thompson of Saint Anne allegedly struck two Bradley Central players, sending one to the hospital. Thompson was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated battery in a public place among other charges.
A man says he was knocked unconscious by a group of men outside a Kankakee Bar early Sunday morning. According to Kankakee City police reports, the battery happened near the 300 block of South East Avenue Sunday. The victim stated he had been dropped off near a bar to meet a family member. As he walked toward the entrance, a group of men approached and began striking him. One of the men is described as approximately 5 foot 8 inches with dark hair and wearing a white T-shirt and dark jeans, struck him in the back of the head with an object the victim believed to be a metal pole. The victim says he then blacked out and did not recognize any of the attackers. Officers could see the victim had a head laceration that required medical treatment. A search of the area outside the bar and nearby surveillance footage turned up no evidence.
A Kankakee man has been arrested after he allegedly threatened someone with a loaded handgun. According to city police reports, the incident happened sometime Sunday in the 100 block of South Wildwood Avenue. When officers arrived, the victim told them a man, later identified as 44 year old Juan Tejada Lozada, allegedly had displayed a black handgun, inserted a loaded magazine, and pressed the firearm against his stomach before leaving. Witnesses outside the home say they observed Lozada leave while holding multiple magazines as he walked to a maroon car. Officers located Lozada later on in the 500 block of South Gordon Avenue. No gun was located on Lozada or in his car at that time. Lozada was taken back to the station for questioning and later charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Kankakee City Police confiscated a loaded gun during a DUI arrest Sunday. According to police reports, officers were called for a welfare check sometime Sunday to a man sitting in a red pickup truck on South Wildwood Avenue. The man was passed out in the drivers seat when police got there. Officers woke him up, noticed the smell of alcohol on him and also spotted an open beer container in the car. After officers conducted a field sobriety test and placed the man in the back of a squad car. A search of his truck turned up a loaded .22 caliber rifle. 53 year old Billy C. Lippold was arrested and charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, among other charges.

For safe turkey preparation, the first step is to safely thaw the bird. It takes about 24 hours for every five pounds of turkey to thaw in the fridge. A person was shot and killed late Sunday night on Kankakee's east side. According to a press release from Kankakee City Police, the homicide occurred just before 10:30 Sunday night in a parking lot in the 900 block of East Court Street. When officers arrived on the scene after reports of several gunshots fired in the area, they found 20 year old Donnie E. Smith of Chicago lying in a parking lot with gunshot wounds. Smith was transported to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries. Kankakee city detectives urge anyone with information to reach out to their office or call crime stoppers at 815.93 CRIME. Information leading to an arrest may be eligible for a cash reward and callers can remain anonymous.
A fire destroyed a home in Keener Township, Northeast of Roselawn, Indiana Thursday. Keener Township Fire Department says they responded to a two story home around nine Thursday morning on Potomac Drive. Fire conditions prevented crews from making entry into the home and parts of the interior started to collapse. Two people were in the home at the time of the fire and were able to get out safely. No injuries were reported. Crews remained on scene for almost three hours and were assisted by four other departments. No one was injured in the blaze.
Four semi trailers were broken into at a truck stop in Bourbonnais Thursday morning. According to Bourbonnais Police, the break ins happened around two Thursday morning at a truck stop on Quebec Drive when a semi driver who was sleeping in his truck was awakened by two people breaking into his trailer. When the driver got out of his truck to look, he saw the pair had fled east towards I-57. Police say nothing appeared to be missing from the semi trailers. Kankakee City Police reported a similar incident happened overnight Thursday in the 2200 block of East Court Street where a semi trailer was broken into but nothing was taken.
A Kankakee woman has been arrested after allegedly posting a sexually explicit video of someone else on social media without their consent. According to Kankakee City Police, the victim in the video reported the incident to officers on September 25th. 20 year old Omauriyah A. Armstrong was arrested Thursday and charged with Non-consensual dissemination of private sexual images.
Someone stole several gallons of diesel fuel from a semi truck on Kankakee's east side Wednesday. According to Kankakee City Police reports, the theft happened just before midnight Wednesday at a trucking business in the 1300 block of Stanford Drive. Video security footage appears to show a white semi hauling an Amazon trailer pulling up to the victims truck, and the driver getting out to siphon fuel from the parked truck. Afterwards, the driver got back in his truck and headed west bound on Grinnell Road. The victim estimates around 65 gallons of diesel was stolen from his truck.
