Pew Poll: Only 25% Rate Current Economic Conditions ‘Excellent or Good’ 

Only 25 percent of Americans rate the economic conditions under the Biden-Harris administration “excellent or good,” a Pew Research survey found Monday.

The poll is significant because 61 percent of likely voters believe the next president should represent a major change from the Biden-Harris administration, a New York Times/Siena College survey found Sunday. Only 25 percent believe Vice President Kamala Harris represents that change, while a majority think former President Donald Trump does.

Seventy-five percent of Americans say the economy is “only fair” or “poor,” according to the poll.

In addition, 74 percent of Americans are “very concerned” about the soaring prices of food and consumer products. “Other economic concerns — housing costs and job availability — have increased since 2023,” the poll found.

And the markets are finally catching on to this, that the numbers are fraudulent, and the markets reacted badly on Friday. They’re bouncing the next day or two. But what we see coming is not good.   That juice ran out in March, and we’ve been rolling down ever since in our economic indicators into this month, which is lower than every previous month. So there’s bad news on the horizon, not to mention the most controversial election in our lifetimes, which is pausing all business investment. No one’s making a decision until they see who’s going to be in power. There’s a buyer strike going on on Wall Street. I was talking to some hedge fund guys who invest big dollars. They are sitting on their hands. They brought their net exposure way down. No one wants to get involved before the election.

So we’re going to see, I think, a market correction into October. That will favor Trump. I don’t think they can hold up and put lipstick on this pig too much longer. The truth is coming out.

Gov. Gavin Newsom Wants Mandate For Oil Companies To Create Stockpile Of Gasoline 

Chevron had been headquartered in California for over 140 years, giving it strong roots in this state. However, the toxic policies of California’s lawmakers and regulators have killed those roots.

The fossil fuel giant will relocate to Texas.

Sacramento sees gasoline firms and petroleum refineries as cash cows that will always agree to be milked despite being made into a climate villain and accused of corporate greed.

So, to resolve the state’s serious energy challenges, California Gov. Gavin Newsom called for a special session Saturday after the Assembly rebuffed his efforts to pass an energy package before a critical deadline passed.

Newsom’s plan mandates that the state’s oil companies create gasoline stockpiles.

California Governor Gavin Newsom plans to propose legislation requiring oil companies in the most-populous US state to amass stockpiles of gasoline and other fuels to prevent supply shortages and price spikes during refinery outages.

 

Newsom’s proposals will likely do nothing more than drive the closure of even more refineries and firms that support the fossil fuel industry. That may be his objective, but unless a lot more of those Generation IV nuclear reactors start appearing or lithium battery fires stop erupting, it is going to be increasingly difficult to sustain the California lifestyle that Democrats from this state tout.

The petroleum industry has pushed back, saying the mandate would hurt consumers.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen predicts that the U.S. economy will likely remain solid amid several weaker-than-expected jobs reports and after the stock market posted its worst week in months.

“We’re seeing less frenzy in terms of hiring and job openings, but we’re not seeing meaningful layoffs,” Yellen said during an event on Sept. 7, CNBC reported. “I’m attentive to downside risk now on the employment side, but what I think we’re seeing, and hope we will continue to see, is a good, solid economy.”

The secretary said that the decline in job growth was caused by a slowdown after a “hiring frenzy” following the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that the overall economy is “deep into a recovery” and “operating at full employment.”

Big Lots files for bankruptcy

Big Lots, the beleaguered discount retailer that previously warned it had “substantial doubt” about its survival, has filed for bankruptcy.

Macy's Set To Close 55 Stores By The End Of 2024

Macy’s has announced that it is closing a total of 55 stores by the end of 2024, in the faltering brand’s ongoing effort to revamp its business.

According to The Daily Mail, the company originally intended to close 50 underperforming stores by the end of the year, part of the 150 total locations it will close within three years. However, it now plans to close 55 before 2025.

“The biggest things that have gone wrong at Macy’s are the quality of the stores and the product assortment,” GlobalData Retail analyst Neil Saunders said to the outlet.

“And so over the years customers have deserted it, sales have tumbled and store productivity has gone down. All the metrics have gone in the wrong direction.”

JUST IN: Governor Newsom Vetoes Bill That Would Allow Illegal Aliens to Buy Homes with Zero Down Payment and 0% Interest

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) on Friday vetoed a bill that would have allowed illegal aliens to buy homes with zero down payment and pay zero interest.

If Newsom signed the bill, illegal aliens would be eligible for a new program that offers a loan worth 20% of the purchase price of the residential property. There are no monthly payments and no interest accrues on the loan. Rather, the loan is paid back when the borrower refinances or sells the property. The borrower will have to pay back the original loan plus a 20% increase in the value of the property.

After the California Senate advanced the bill allowing illegal aliens to apply for the state’s first-time homebuyer’s program, the California Department of Finance confirmed the program has no money to give.

Governor Newsom vetoed the bill because of a lack of funds.

“I am returning Assembly Bill 1840 without my signature,” Newsom wrote in his veto message to the members of the California State Assembly.

 

“Given the finite funding available for CalHFA programs, expanding program eligibility must be carefully considered within the broader context of the annual state budget to ensure we manage our resources effectively,” he said.

“For this reason, I am unable to sign this bill,” Newsom wrote.

Trump floats US sovereign wealth fund as part of economic pitch

 Trump in a speech to business leaders  called for the creation of a U.S. sovereign wealth fund, a government-owned investment fund, to finance “great national endeavors.”

While offering few details, Trump said the fund would would yield a “gigantic profit” that could help “pay down the national debt” — an unmet goal from his 2016 campaign.

Sovereign wealth funds are prevalent throughout the industrialized and developing world, with the largest ones residing in oil-rich states like Norway, Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf nations as well as China, Singapore and Hong Kong.

“Why don’t we have a wealth fund? Other countries have wealth funds. We have nothing,” Trump said during his speech to The Economic Club of New York, adding that the U.S. fund would be financed by tariffs “and other intelligent things.”

According to the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute, roughly 100 funds currently manage nearly $13 trillion in assets. That includes a handful of U.S. states including Alaska, Texas, New Mexico and others which have set up their own types of government-run funds initially financed by oil, gas and mineral resources. Trump now wants to do the same at the federal level.

Volvo gives up plan to sell only EVs by 2030 

Car company Volvo has abandoned its target to produce only fully electric cars by 2030, saying it now expects to be selling some hybrid vehicles by that date.

The carmaker blamed changing market conditions for its decision to give up a target it had announced only three years ago.

It comes as the industry faces a slowdown in demand in some major markets for electric vehicles (EVs) and uncertainty due to the imposition of trade tariffs on EVs made in China.

Volvo, which has traditionally flaunted its environmental credentials, joins other major carmakers General Motors and Ford in rowing back on EV ambitions.

Volvo now expects at least 90% of its output to be made up of both electric cars and plug-in hybrids by 2030.

ADP Employment Report Weakest Since Jan 2021

Ahead of tomorrow's "most important data point in history" payrolls print, this morning we get the ADP employment report and jobless claims (and ISM Services) as an aperitif to tease the day traders and test the reaction functions of the algos.

Against expectations of adding 145k jobs (a slight improvement over July's 122k), ADP's Employment report printed a dismal +99k for August - the weakest print since January 2021 (and July's +122k was revised down to +111k)...

Bank of Canada Cuts Rates For Third Consecutive Month, Says "Expect Further Cuts"

 Bank of Canada cuts its overnight lending rate by 25bps for the 3rd consecutive time, as all economists expected, and citing continued easing in inflationary pressures.

First Dollar General, Now Dollar Tree Shares Plunge As Both Discount Retailers Warn Of Core Customer Under Pressure  

Shares of Dollar Tree plunged nearly 12% in premarket trading in New York after the discount retailer, which operates thousands of stores nationwide, posted fiscal second-quarter earnings that fell short of Wall Street expectations. The company also slashed its full-year outlook, pointing to mounting financial pressures on middle-income and higher-income customers. This comes less than a week after major rival Dollar General reported a "financially constrained core customer" that sent shares crashing the most on record.

 

What's critical to note for the political strategist: Dollar Tree & Family Dollar and Dollar General stores are mostly concentrated in the eastern half of the US. Mangment's gloom about its core customer base should serve as a proxy for consumer sentiment for mid/low-tier consumers. In other words, there is a lot of gloom and doom among working-poor Americans in critical swing states.

Last week, Dollar General shares crashed the most on record after management warned that core customers "feel financially constrained."
