Big Panda Announces Retaliatory Tariffs – Mostly, In Name Only – It’s all Propaganda

Never was that reality clearer, than in the example of the retaliatory tariffs announced in response to President Trump’s trade tariffs.

First, tariffs on energy products are pure propaganda.  Coal, LNG and crude oil are fungible. In the case of China the energy products arrive from a global market, there is no identifiable way to tariff American energy products.  This is not like Canada where the Candian energy products are entirely dependent on pipelines into the USA, and therefore unavoidably easy to tariff by Trump.

Chairman Xi gets most of the Chinese imported energy resources from Russia, specifically Coal, LNG and Crude Oil.  So, this subset of tariffs against American energy products is pure propaganda,

BREAKING: Obama Judge Blocks Trump’s Federal Spending Freeze For 22 States  

A federal judge on Friday temporarily blocked President Trump’s order to freeze federal funding to 22 states on public loans and grants.

On Monday, Trump’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) put a temporary pause of agency grant, loan and other financial assistance programs.

US District Judge of the District Court for the District of Rhode Island, John McConnell, an Obama appointee, temporarily blocked Trump’s freeze on federal funding in response to a request from 22 Democrat state attorneys general and DC.

Trump to sign executive order installing 'massive' 10-for-1 deregulatory agenda

 President Donald Trump will sign an executive order Friday that will significantly expand the "2-for-1" deregulatory goal he installed during his first stint in the White House.

The White House detailed the order in a memo, obtained Friday morning by the Washington Examiner, which follows through on one of Trump's 2024 campaign promises. It requires federal agencies to "identify at least 10 existing rules, regulations, or guidance documents to be repealed" for every new proposed rule, regulation, or guidance.

The order further directs the Office of Management and Budget to set "standardized measurement and estimation of regulatory costs" and "requires that for fiscal 2025, the total incremental cost of all new regulations, including repealed regulations, be significantly less than zero."

  U.S. President Donald Trump is getting his wish that interest rates drop across the world, just not at home where a strong economy and uncertainty over his own policies have set the stage for the Federal Reserve to diverge from its central bank peers.

Trump may be his own worst enemy in his fight against the Fed

Trump has said he wants lower interest rates, but he may be standing in his own way.

His policies, though, are an obstacle the Fed could have to navigate as it adjusts monetary policy.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell sent a clear message this week that central bankers were in no rush to lower rates, with Fed officials opting to pause rate cuts in the first policy meeting of the year.

That seemed to defy pressure from Trump, who said in his address to the World Economic Forum last week that he would demand interest rates be lowered "immediately."

He added that his policies — including plans to levy steep tariffs on imports from China, Canada, and Mexico — could help renew the US economy.

But those plans could end up being the very obstacle the Fed has to navigate this year as it decides what to do with interest rates, and they're likely the reason the Fed will hit pause until the picture becomes clearer, Wall Street forecasters say.

Economists have warned that Trump's plan to levy steep tariffs on US imports could stoke inflation, a notion that Trump has pushed back on. The president has said he would lower prices, and he implemented tariffs in his first term without a significant inflation increase.

The US president is threatening to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China as early as this Saturday, a stance that some economists predict will put upward pressure on inflation at a time when the central bank is trying to ensure that issue is finally under control.

Federal Reserve expected to stand pat on rates even as Trump demands cuts

  The Federal Reserve is nearly certain to keep its key interest rate unchanged at its policy meeting this week, just a few days after President Donald Trump said he would soon demand lower rates.

Vincent Reinhart, chief economist at BNY Investments and a former top economist at the Fed, said Powell won't let Trump's attacks affect his policy decisions.

 Fed officials have clearly signaled they expect to skip a rate hike, at least in January, to evaluate the job market and economy.

Some officials, including Beth Hammack, president of the Fed’s Cleveland branch, have argued that the persistence of inflation means the Fed should keep its key rate elevated. Hammack voted against the Fed’s quarter-point cut last month.

Most economists forecast that widepread tariffs will likely lift inflation by roughly several-tenths of a percentage point — not a large amount, but potentially enough for the Fed to postpone rate cuts. It could take months for the tariffs to be formally imposed and then to evaluate their impact on the economy. Some economists don't think the impact will be apparent until next year.

EU Considers German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Proposal Of Europe-Wide EV Incentives

The European Union is drafting bloc-wide incentives for electric vehicle purchases to aid struggling automakers, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced at Davos. He emphasized that Europe must strengthen its economy, boost industry competitiveness, and reduce bureaucracy in response to global challenges, according to Bloomberg.

Scholz said last week: “What we need are pragmatic solutions, not ideological ones. And that is why I am delighted that the president of the commission has now taken up my proposal for harmonized Europe-wide purchase premiums for e-cars.”

Devalued Dollar Will Crash the DOW – Martin Armstrong 

Armstrong has deep experience in the currency markets. In 1985, Armstrong was called in by the Reagan Administration about cutting the value of the dollar to spark trade. Armstrong warned if you cut the dollar, you will have a big crash within two years. What happened? Two years later, the stock market crashed more than 22% in one day in the infamous 1987 stock market crash. It is still the record for a one-day crash in percentage terms. Armstrong says, “In the end, they said we think foreign exchange had something to do with the crash. That was the best I could get out of them. They are not going to stand up and say, oh gee, we caused it (the crash) by lowering the dollar by 40%.”

Armstrong is going to write President Trump a letter warning him NOT to force the US dollar lower.
