Kohl's to close 27 stores by April as struggling retailer looks to improve profits, sales

Germany Faces Highest Number Of Bankruptcies Since Great Financial Crisis

Germany is bracing for a sharp rise in bankruptcies this year, with an anticipated 25–30 percent increase compared to 2024, reaching levels not seen since the 2009 financial crisis.

In 2024, 364 major companies with annual revenues exceeding €10 million filed for bankruptcy — a 30 percent increase over the previous year. This marks a stark contrast to 2020, the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic when 292 such companies went bankrupt.

The hardest-hit sectors include automotive suppliers, mechanical engineering, construction, and healthcare.

 

Automotive suppliers have been identified as the most at-risk sector for insolvency in 2025, with one in six major bankruptcies in 2024 stemming from this industry. The transition to electric vehicles, declining car production, and weaker demand in key markets like China have exposed cracks in the sector’s foundation.

 

The construction industry took a heavy hit last year, with bankruptcies rising by 53 percent.

Federal Reserve officials  sounded the alarm on inflation over Trump’s policies related to tariffs and immigration.

CNBC reported:

Federal Reserve officials at their December meeting expressed concern about inflation and the impact that President-elect Donald Trump’s policies could have, indicating that they would be moving more slowly on interest rate cuts because of the uncertainty, minutes released Wednesday showed.

Without calling out Trump by name, the meeting summary featured at least four mentions about the effect that changes in immigration and trade policy could have on the U.S. economy.

Since Trump’s November election victory, he has signaled plans for aggressive, punitive tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada as well as the other U.S. trading partners. In addition, he intends to pursue more deregulation and mass deportations.

However, the extent of what Trump’s actions will be and specifically how they will be directed creates a band of ambiguity about what is ahead, which Federal Open Market Committee members said would require caution.

Sue, Baby, Sue: Trump Plan To "Un-Ban" The Biden Drilling Order Could Prove Difficult

After a presidential campaign where both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris pushed back on claims that they were trying to shut down much of the fossil fuel industry, Biden waited until the final days of his administration to ban oil and gas drilling over 670 million acres of America’s coastline.

President-elect Donald Trump responded that “It’s ridiculous.I’ll un-ban it immediately. I have the right to un-ban it immediately.”

It will likely be more difficult than a simple “un-ban” order.

Environmental groups will likely push a “sue, baby, sue” campaign to counter Trump’s “drill, baby, drill.”

In his statement, Biden justified the move to counter the “climate crisis.”

So, there are grounds to assert this authority of reversal, but it will take years in court.

The alternative and preferred route would be Congress.

This is an issue that should ultimately rest with Congress. This ambiguous law is unfortunately common in poorly crafted provisions giving presidents sweeping authority.

Sen. Mike Lee (R., Utah), chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, has already pledged to “push back using every tool at our disposal.”

Euro zone inflation jumps in December on higher energy costs 

Euro zone inflation accelerated in December, an unwelcome but anticipated blip that is unlikely to derail further interest rate cuts from the European Central Bank.

New Biden water heater ban will drive up energy prices for poor, seniors: expert 

A Biden administration ban on certain natural gas water heaters as part of the lame duck president’s climate agenda could send prices soaring for the elderly and the poor.

Under the policy, new non-condensing, natural gas-fired water heaters will be prohibited for sale starting in 2029 due to concerns about carbon-dioxide emissions.  .

If the policy takes effect, as it is slated to on March 11, a little less than 40% of the tankless water heaters currently on the market would be banned, according to an estimate from the Appliance Standards Awareness Project.

“When the rule goes into effect, all that manufacturing will basically be irrelevant,” Frank Windsor, president of Rinnai America, a water heater manufacturer, told the outlet.

Biden announced Monday morning he is utilizing his power under the 70-year-old Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act to block all future oil and natural gas leasing in more than 625 million acres of federal waters. Established in 1953, this act gives the United States jurisdiction over submerged lands beyond state coastal waters and allows the federal government to lease offshore resources.

Biden’s ban will put a permanent halt to offshoring drilling in all federal waters off the East and West coasts, the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and portions of the northern Bering Sea in Alaska. The Western Gulf of Mexico, where drilling is already happening,

‘Not Incredibly Popular’: Blue State Primed To Clear Cut Hundreds Of Acres Of Forest To Make Way For Solar Panels

Michigan is poised to cut down hundreds of acres of forest in order to make space for a solar panel development, MLive reported Thursday.

The state will soon start competitive bidding on approximately 420 acres of forested land near Gaylord, Michigan, to clear space for a solar farm while generating revenue and advancing the state’s long-term green energy targets,

Notably, one study published by Harvard researchers found that clearing forests to replace with solar panel developments may actually lead to an overall increase in greenhouse gas emissions, and a paper published by Chinese researchers also reached similar conclusions. There are also oil and gas wellheads in other areas of the woods that remain forested, according to MLive.

“This is pretty amazing. Michigan is not like California, it’s not like the sun is always shining there,” Dan Kish, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Energy Research, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “This is the theater of the absurd, and it’s all driven by tax credits and giveaways from the federal and state government, and by mandates that the governor there has implemented.”

What do we mean by fraudulent? How about this: NOAA has made repeated "adjustments" to its data, for the presumed scientific reason of making the data sets more accurate.

Nothing wrong with that. Except, all their changes point to one thing — lowering previously measured temperatures to show cooler weather in the past, and raising more recent temperatures to show warming in the recent present.

This creates a data illusion of ever-rising temperatures to match the increase in CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere since the mid-1800s, which global warming advocates say is a cause-and-effect relationship. The more CO2, the more warming.

But the actual measured temperature record shows something different: There have been hot years and hot decades since the turn of the last century, and colder years and colder decades. But the overall measured temperature shows no clear trend over the last century, at least not one that suggests runaway warming.

That is, until the NOAA's statisticians "adjust" the data. Using complex statistical models, they change the data to reflect not reality, but their underlying theories of global warming. That's clear from a simple fact of statistics: Data generate random errors,

US oil firm Apache has announced plans to exit the North Sea because the windfall tax has made its UK operations "uneconomic".

The Texas firm will cease all production at its UK assets by December 2029, “well ahead of what would have been an otherwise reasonable time frame".

In addition to criticising the UK’s Energy Profits Levy — otherwise known as a windfall tax — John Christmann, chief executive of Apache parent firm APA, said UK regulators issued new rules that will require “substantial new emissions control investments” on facilities that operate in the North Sea beyond 2029.

He said: “After six months of evaluation, we have concluded that the investment required to comply with these regulations… coupled with the onerous financial impact of the Energy Profits Levy makes production of hydrocarbons beyond the year 2029 uneconomic.”

Apache took control of the Forties field in 2003 but suspended all new drilling activity last year. The firm will run a “very limited capital programme” in the North Sea next year before those assets are ultimately decommissioned, Mr Christmann said.

German energy official asks citizens to save gas

 German households and businesses should save gas to avoid shortages, the country’s energy regulator, the Federal Network Agency, has requested, Die Welt reported on Wednesday. According to an analysis by the agency, the country has been consuming significantly more gas this heating season than last year.

The agency said total gas consumption in Germany rose by 5.8% from October to December 2024 against the same period the previous year, to 246 terawatt-hours (TWh). Industries recorded an increase in consumption of 9.1% compared to 2023, while the increase in households and businesses was more modest at 1.9%, the report noted.

BREAKING: Mass Shooting Reported at New York Nightclub — At Least Eleven People Hurt 

A mass shooting has been reported at a nightclub in Queens, New York.

While details about the attack still remain scarce, it is said to have taken place at the Amazura event hall located near Jamaica Long Island Rail Road station.

New York Metro reports:

Law enforcement sources said the gunfire erupted near the Amazura event hall at 91-12 144th Place in Jamaica, within the confines of the 103rd Precinct, at about 11:20 p.m. on Jan. 1.

At least three individuals wounded in the shooting walked into a local hospital seeking treatment, sources familiar with the investigation said.

 

The attack took place hours after the city of New Orleans was subject to an Islamist terror attack in which 16 people were killed by a car ramming.
