Up to $41 billion in World Bank climate finance unaccounted for, Oxfam finds 

Up to $41 billion in World Bank climate finance —nearly 40 percent of all climate funds disbursed by the Bank over the past seven years— is unaccounted for due to poor record-keeping practices, reveals a new Oxfam report published today ahead of the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings in Washington D.C.

An Oxfam audit of the World Bank’s 2017-2023 climate finance portfolio found that between $24 billion and $41 billion in climate finance went unaccounted for between the time projects were approved and when they closed.

There is no clear public record showing where this money went or how it was used, which makes any assessment of its impacts impossible. It also remains unclear whether these funds were even spent on climate-related initiatives intended to help low- and middle-income countries protect people from the impacts of the climate crisis and invest in clean energy.

Record 633,000 Businesses in Britain on Brink of Collapse: Report

A record number of businesses are “on the edge of collapse” in Britain as the left-wing Labour Party government in Westminster is reportedly set to impose the largest tax hike in modern history.

Major Bank Hit with Record Fine Over Drug Cartel Money Laundering Scandal 

One of America’s major banks has been hit with a massive fine after federal investigators said it was lax in its efforts to monitor money laundering.

TD Bank will pay $1.89 billion to the Department of Justice, $123.5 million to the Federal Reserve Board, and $450 million to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, according to the consent order between the federal government and the bank.

The bank must also pay $757 million to the Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement, referred to in the consent order as FinCEN.

“From fentanyl and narcotics trafficking, to terrorist financing and human trafficking, TD Bank’s chronic failures provided fertile ground for a host of illicit activity to penetrate our financial system,” Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo said.

As the U.S. hurtles toward a presidential election this fall, the nation’s inflation rate has quietly returned to normal, even as it continues to worry voters and draw focus at campaign events.

More than half of adults list inflation as a top issue for the country, making it the highest-ranking concern by a wide margin over the likes of immigration, crime and abortion, according to an Ipsos poll conducted late last month.

The disconnect stems in part from a typical lag between when inflation comes down and when consumers acclimate to new price levels, since a lower inflation rate does not mean prices have come down but rather that they have begun to increase at a slower pace, experts told ABC News.

Trump pledges to nix double taxation for Americans abroad

New to the list of former President Trump’s campaign tax proposals is a plan to end double taxation for Americans living overseas.

“I support ending the double taxation of overseas Americans,” Trump said in a statement shared Thursday with The Hill.

Americans living abroad can have tax obligations both to the U.S. and to the country where they reside, though U.S. tax laws have some features to mitigate those dual burdens.

But that’s still a relatively unusual mandate, as many countries allow their citizens not to pay taxes while they’re residing abroad.

The Wall Street Journal reports You Can’t Buy That Diesel Truck.

California’s Advanced Clean Fleets rule says “zero-emission” trucks must be a growing share of semi-truck fleet sales. California imposes a similar mandate for passenger cars. Trouble is, truckers aren’t buying electric big rigs because they can’t afford them even with $40,000 in federal tax credits. Electric trucks cost twice as much as diesel-powered rigs and have a limited driving range—150 miles on average, compared to between 1,000 and 1,500 for diesel trucks. There are also few truck charging stations.

Yet under California’s rules, “dealers are restricted from selling a diesel truck unless they sell a ZEV truck,” the dealer group reports. The result: “New class 8 truck sales (ZEV and Diesel) were down 50 percent year-over-year in June 2024.” Truckers are driving older engines longer because they can’t buy newer diesel models, which results in more pollution.

Dealers say trucks are piling up on their lots—electric models because truckers won’t buy them, and diesel rigs that dealers consequently aren’t allowed to sell. Dealers say they incur monthly interest penalties on unsold truck inventory that can amount to more than $99,000.

Volvo VNR Electric: The Volvo VNR Electric has a range of 275 miles.

Kenworth T680E: The Kenworth T680E has a range of 150 miles.

Peterbilt 579EV: The Peterbilt 579EV has a range of 150 miles.

BYD 8TT: The BYD 8TT has a range of 167 miles.

In contrast to the above EV estimates, the driving range of a diesel semi is 900 to 2,000 miles on average.

Energy Giant Puts Goal To Drastically Cut Oil, Gas Production On Ice

European energy company BP has abandoned its pledge to cut oil and gas production by 2030 as the firm aims to shore up investor confidence amid a slide in its share price, Reuters reported Monday.

BP unveiled plans in August 2020 to reduce its oil and gas output 40% by 2030, before dialing back the target to 25% in February 2023, according to Reuters. Now, in an attempt to regain the trust of investors, CEO Murray Auchincloss has dropped the target altogether in what sources told Reuters is part of a broader corporate strategy shift to focus on profitability and returns rather than green initiatives

The news follows BP announcing plans to sell its roughly $2 billion U.S. onshore wind portfolio in September and comes as the company’s share price sits at a near two-year low. It also coincides with a strategy shift at rival energy company Shell, which rejected further cuts to oil production in June 2023 shortly before its CEO Wael Sawan described lowering oil output as “dangerous and irresponsible” in a July 2023 interview with the BBC.

FEMA Abandons Devastated NC Town Residents — ‘Nobody’s Been Bringing in Supplies Except Civilians’ After Agency Refuses to Drive Around ‘Road Closed’ Sign   

Chelsea Atkins, 38, a health researcher originally from Buffalo, NY, shared her frustration with FEMA’s incompetence in an interview with the New York Post.

“FEMA called me and told me they wanted to inspect my house, then called me back to say they couldn’t drive around the ‘road closed’ sign. They weren’t allowed,” she told The Post.

“You can drive it by car for sure, it’s not that bad, you just have to drive around the ‘road closed’ sign. I explained that to them. They said they couldn’t.”

Take note that it is the very same road The Post successfully traversed on its way to Bat Cave.

“FEMA hasn’t been here,” Atkins said, adding, “It’s been a civilian-run operation since day one.
