🎧 一份歌單，可以有多少種不同的聲音？

每一首單獨聽都很好聽，為什麼放在同一份歌單裡，卻突然覺得哪裡怪怪的？

這一次，瀛瀛負責準備社區小聚的音樂，堂堂則送來一份風格非常豐富的歌單。

一開始，瀛瀛擔心這些音樂根本搭不起來。

可是，當她重新試聽、調整順序，甚至刪掉幾首自己很喜歡的歌曲後，才慢慢發現：

喜歡很多不同的東西，和知道怎麼把它們放在一起，其實是兩件不同的事。

在這集《English Shades｜英文語感系列》中，我們透過一個溫暖的小故事，一起探索五個容易混淆的英文形容詞：

🎵 mixed｜不同的東西混合在一起

🎵 varied｜內容有變化、不單調

🎵 diverse｜組成元素具有不同風格或背景

🎵 eclectic｜跨越不同來源與風格的取材或組合

🎵 selective｜有選擇、有取捨

這些字都可能和中文的「多樣」有關，卻不是可以隨意替換的同義詞。

而一個人很 selective，是否就不能同時擁有 eclectic tastes？

Folk music, electronic beats, and classic movie soundtracks.

Each song sounds wonderful on its own. But what happens when you put them all together?

In this episode, Yingying is preparing a playlist for a small community gathering, while TangTang has shared a collection of songs from very different musical styles.

At first, Yingying worries that the music simply doesn't fit together.

But as she listens again, rearranges the songs, and removes a few favorites, she begins to discover something:

Enjoying many different things isn't quite the same as knowing how to bring them together.

In this episode of English Shades, we explore five English adjectives through a gentle, everyday story:

🎵 mixed — containing different things combined together

🎵 varied — offering variety rather than repetition

🎵 diverse — made up of noticeably different kinds or styles

🎵 eclectic — drawing from a range of different sources or styles

🎵 selective — making careful choices rather than accepting everything

These words may seem similar, but each one highlights something different.

We'll also explore two questions:

When does a playlist simply contain mixed music, and when might we describe it as eclectic?

And can someone be selective while still having eclectic tastes?

Sometimes, creating something meaningful isn't about including everything you love.

It's about discovering what belongs together, at least for this particular moment. ♡

Well… that's a reply.

But where's the answer? 😂

In this episode of English Shades, YingYing is preparing an opening speech for a community event.

While practicing in an empty stairwell, she hears an echo of her own voice.

Later, she receives a reply to her booking request—but still doesn't have the answer she needs.

And when she finally memorizes her opening line through repetition, she begins to wonder:

Is remembering a sentence the same as truly understanding it?

Through this little story, we'll explore five English words:

🥕 echo — A reflected sound, or a trace of something said or expressed before.

🥕 reply — A response to a message or question, which may or may not provide the information needed.

🥕 answer — A response that addresses a question, or a solution to a problem.

🥕 repetition — The act of saying or doing something again, often as part of learning or practice.

🥕 parroting — Repeating someone else's words in a way that suggests a lack of understanding or independent thought.

We'll also explore why reply and answer sometimes overlap, and why repetition and parroting carry different implications.

Because learning English isn't always about memorizing more words.

Sometimes, it's about understanding what those words really communicate.

What happens when a simple team retreat proposal starts sounding less like relaxation—and more like a complete shutdown? 😂

Scorey has been working on a promotional proposal for a team retreat.

His opening line?

“Our guests will enjoy a life of luxury and complete inactivity.”

Yingying knows what he means. Comfortable rooms, peaceful evenings, and time away from work.

But something about those words feels… wrong.

As the proposal unfolds, words like luxury, affluence, prosperity, leisure, inactivity, idleness, and inertia begin to paint surprisingly different pictures.

And just when Yingying thinks things cannot get any stranger, Scorey introduces ataraxia, requiescence, repose, and supinity.

His explanation?

“I wanted it to sound sophisticated.” 😂

The exhibition is over.

The last visitor has left. The gallery, once filled with voices and footsteps, suddenly becomes quiet. Ying-Ying still has some pudding, the visitors’ cards are still on the wall, and Tuffy is there beside her.

She feels happy. Satisfied. Peaceful.

But if we call all of those feelings simply happiness, something gets lost.

There is satisfaction when your effort finally reaches its goal.
There is gratification when something you wanted finally gives you that sense of reward.
And then there is contentment—the quiet feeling that you don’t actually need anything more.

As evening settles over the gallery, another question appears:

Are quietness, quietude, tranquility, and serenity really different ways of saying the same thing?

In this episode of English Shades, we won’t treat these words as a vocabulary list. Instead, we’ll stay with Ying-Ying through one quiet evening and notice where each feeling comes from—and why English gives them different names.
