When people discuss the most important inventions or discoveries in history, they often mention smartphones, computers, or artificial intelligence.
But in this Writing Lab short episode, Ying Ying explores a different kind of high-scoring TOEFL argument:
👉 How discoveries related to human nutrition and essential vitamins can be expanded into discussions about public health, life expectancy, and long-term societal impact.
This is not a main episode.
It is a focused Writing Lab sub-episode designed to help you practice one single argument.
In this episode, you will learn:
• Why strong TOEFL arguments often move from individuals to society
• Why health-related arguments are considered “safe” in the exam
• 5 reusable template long sentences
• How to build a complete TOEFL argument under time pressure

✓ Main Idea
✓ Detail
✓ Inference
✓ Organization

In this TOEFL-style Academic Talk, Ying Ying the Alpaca explores the role of catalysis in sustainable chemistry and why catalysts are considered one of the most important tools for reducing energy consumption in modern industrial processes.
You'll learn how catalysts accelerate reactions without being consumed, why enzymatic catalysis is highly energy-efficient, and how catalytic hydrogenation helps industries operate under milder conditions.
This episode also discusses an important challenge: catalyst deactivation. Researchers continue to develop advanced heterogeneous catalysts with porous structures to improve durability and performance, but questions remain about production costs and large-scale implementation.
Through this lecture, you'll practice the same listening skills tested on the TOEFL:
• Identifying the main idea
• Following lecture organization
• Understanding examples and their functions
• Making inferences about a professor’s viewpoint
Remember: TOEFL Listening is not about understanding every word. It's about understanding how ideas are connected.
Put on your headphones and practice listening like a TOEFL test maker with Ying Ying.

Many TOEFL test-takers understand every sentence in an announcement but still choose the wrong answer.
Why?
Because announcement questions are often less about understanding information and more about identifying the action students are expected to take.
In this episode of Ying Ying the Alpaca Learns English with You, you'll learn how to:
✓ Recognize the true purpose of announcement questions
✓ Identify common ETS action signals quickly
✓ Avoid attractive but incorrect answer choices
✓ Build an effective "Action Radar" for TOEFL Listening
Using an original campus announcement example, this episode focuses on moving beyond comprehension and toward strategic listening.
Perfect for students preparing for the 2026 TOEFL Listening section.
🎧 In this episode:
• Announcement question strategies
• Action-focused listening skills
• Common ETS trap answers
• TOEFL test-day listening techniques
Train yourself not only to understand English, but also to respond correctly when it matters.
