Giving birth to an emperor’s son was a path to power and glory for the mother’s relatives, especially if the son became heir to the throne. Power struggles in the harem were intense, frequently deadly. To prevent such struggles, the first son of the empress was supposed to be the heir. Any change in this order set off free-for-alls, so the officials were by and large opposed to any tinkering with the dynastic succession.
