Yeah-Uh-Huh

The unprovoked war in Ukraine is over a month old,  and new events change the outlook every day.  Today the city of Bucha was recaptured by Ukranian forces after the retreat of the Russian army,  and evidence of Vladimir Putin's war crimes offered a grim reminder of his barbaric resolve.  Over 400 civilians were found dead in the streets or dumped into mass graves, with indications these victims had been tortured and abused before execution.  Last Thursday,  we had a passionate discussion with polticial pundit Will Cooper and a former citizen of the Ukraine, Virginia Mushkatblat.  The mood was slightly more optimistic at the time,  with peace talks under way in Instanbul, Turkey.  Virginia is the owner of her own business and employs several Ukranian citizens.  As her morning meetings take place,  she greets every one of them with the question,  "are you still alive?"  This was a very serious discussion and I did not want too much time to elapse before publishing it.

Lou Diamond's first appearance on Yeah Uh was way back on episode 3.  As he did the first round,  Lou brought several of his close personal friends,  like Bernie Sanders,  Larry David,  Dutch Reagan and his roommate Jeff "The Cowboy" Brantley.  We are not just confined to baseball talk in episode 56,  but you know it had to come up with the 1986 Rolaids Relief winner in the house.  Lou also talks about his burgeoning wine distribution business in and around the mean streets of Cincinnati and Norwood,  and it wouldn't be a rock star episode without the guest talking about some of his favorite drummers.  Lou was En Fuego this night!  You will laugh.

In todays episode we talk to Dayton Ohio based band Ludlow Creek (No relation to the New York Ludlow Creeks). Their country rock original songs span a spectrum of themes while good music adds emphasis to their messages. This is not to say they are political or social movers and shakers. They simply write thoughtful lyrics with good music to back it up. Please enjoy the podcast and if you like the bits of music Phil puts in by all means find more. Their first album Hands of Time is available now and they are working on a second album as I type.

YUH 54 is crime fiction writer Frank Zafiro.  A former police officer and Swat Team Captain,  Frank brings years of law enforcement experience to series like "The Back List (co-written with Eric Beetner) and his River City books that chronicle the lives of cops in the great North West.  Frank is a prolific writer,  but he also finds time for his very own podcast, "Wrong Place Write Crime",  of which I can strongly recommend his conversation with screenwriter Dan Bronson.  It's cops and robbers week on Yeah Uh Huh!

James Joyce.  William Faulkner.  William Blake. Kurt Vonnegut...  We get pretty high minded this week with our guest, Houston native Mike Hilbig.  His first published book is "Judgement Day and Other White Lies",  a collection of short stories and creative works that intertwine Greek Tragedy and the sinister subtleties of white privelage in America today.  Aaron takes the lead on this one.  There are adult themes and a heaping helping to politcal opinion in this one,  so be forewarned.

Around 2007 or so I took Tim O'Connor's Windows Server 2008 class at Max Technical Training,  where a young Tim went rogue to enthusiastically break down TCP/IP packets. Even though the lesson was intended for a more expensive class than the one I was taking, it spoke volumes about the instructor's passion for learning.  Sometime long before that Lisa volunteered at The Cincinnati Nature Center,  where Tim's wife Connie now resides as the passionate, vested Director of Education.  Our guests this week have chosen a life guided by science and empircal evidence. In a world that continues to be destroyed by ignorance and the residual violence it affects,  it was particularly refreshing to talk to this dynamic duo for episode 52 of Yeah Uh Huh!

A veteran of the Peace Corps,  author James A. Ross draws upon a diverse personal resume in his writing.  Signed to a three book deal with Level Best Books in 2021, James' first book, "Coldwater Revenge",  intertwines family intrigue with a compelling, far reaching murder mystery on the northern border of the continental United States.  Now a resident of the rugged frontier of Wyoming,  James discusses the Cowboy tradition of the "tall tale",  which he practices in the clubs of his adopted home almost every weekend.  From Teddy Roosevelt to the giants of industry who may have wished the former president dead,  James Ross has a unique perspective on history that we all came to appreciation in this fascinating hour.

How many teenagers do you know have taught themself the Japanese language?  Such is the passion our latest guest has for the culture of Japan,  and Japanese cinema in particular.  In this hour Eli introduces us the different eras of the Godzilla legend.  We also take a deep dive into the movies of Japan that do NOT include a 6 story tall reptile,  like the "Returner" starring Miyamoto (Takeshi Kaneshiro), Anne Suzuki and,  last but not least,  the enigmatic Mizoguchi (Goro Kishitani).  Finally,  Eli reveals that he is working on his own book that brings the mythology of feudal Japan to the surface.  It was a pleasure to have Eli Liev Leckinger on the show!

You are dining out,  but it's not your best "look".  Maybe you have lost track of the balance of your debit card and shaved a buck or two off your server's tip to make ends meet.  Or, you might have received a bad performance review recently at work,  and you are not exactly sure how many checks are on the horizon as you quickly calculate how much more another frozen marguerita will add to your tab.  Finally,  maybe you order water and soup at the high end restaurant and reconcile that your $3 tip is commensurate with calories you actually consumed during your two hour squat session at the premier corner table of the joint, pitifully optimistic of impressing your blind date.  "The stuffed mushrooms ruled!" You proclaim while consuming the last one and slipping the server the groupon that paid for it.  All of these conditions speak to the dysfunctional relationship between diner and server that often afflicts the modern service industry.  If you have ever wondered what percolates behind the kind eyes, polite smiles and tired jokes of the warriors of these businesses,  Tonya Fritch's first book "Just The Tip: The Ins and Outs of the Industry" serves as an excellent primer.  A humorous and insightful look at life on the front lines of modern service,  Tonya offsets her frustrations with a sense of self-deprecation and humor that will give you pause next time you are handed the tab and consider "just the tip".
