  • Yeah Uh Huh Episode 37 - Katie Chonacas!

Katie Chonacas has carved out quite a career for herself in show business.  The author, actress,  musician and social media influencer has crossed professional paths with Al Pacino,  Robert Deniro, Charlie Day, Ice T and Gary Senise along the yellow brick road, checking off a number of names on my drinking buddy bucket list. You will find as you listen to the following session that Katie has an ethos that Walter Sobchak could appreciate.  Katie and my better half seemed to bond over topics like Misophonia and mental health,  while I kept guiding the discussion back to the amazing lineup of stars Katie has broken bread with over her years as an active member of the Screen Actors Guild. It has been a while since we recorded this discussion,  and in that time Katie has released a new video for Saint Kyriaki (pronounced Key-de-ah-key),  which we also discuss in this episode. I noticed a lot of great stuff while editing this one.

"Otherside: Serenity" is a story that has been evolving in the mind of author HJ VandeRiet since she was 15 years old.  Alanis Laundale is a bright,  talented high schooler with a supportive circle of friends when tragedy strikes.  From the vantage of another level,  Alanis watches her family and friends cope with losing her.  Through the guidance of her guardians Archie and Trinity in the Inner Circle,  Alanis learns that her role and responsibilities do necessarily end in the afterlife,  and she is soon faced with a dimlemna involving her bandmate (and boyfriend) Josh that she must help resolve in order for her soul to have serenity.  With great pop culture and music references that will resonate with readers of all ages,  HJ has shared a poignant coming of age story for the world to enjoy.

  • Yeah Uh Huh Episode 35 - Hannyta!

The answsers are Elton John, Adele, Ed Sheeran... Hannyta!  The question?  Which artists were in the top 5 South African Itunes pop downloads for the week of November 10, 2021?  Hannyta's publicists reached out to us with a pointer to her smash hit "Wildflower" a couple of weeks ago,  and when we heard it we just had to have her on Yeah Uh Huh.  Having just returned from our vacation to the American west,  we were mesmerized by the song's homage to Navajo culture and nod to those American heroes of World War 2 who converted a native American language into a weapon against the tyrrany of Asxis forces.  Heady stuff for a young lady who had just passed her Scottish "highers" with alacrity.  In our brief discussion with this rising star,  we learned of Hannyta's love of American culture,  her amazing collaboration with her proud father and some of the artists that have inspired her along the way.  Towards the end,  Hannyta disclosed that this was her very first interview,  so we plan to take that to the bank when she is dominating the AMA's in the not too distant future.  What a great surprise when she agreed agreed to chat with us from her home in the Scottish Highlands.

  • Yeah Uh Huh Episode 34 - The Warren Report with JT Townsend

We close out our series on JFK with another take on the assassination.  Wtih Katanna Zachry and Sarah Peterson,  we examined many different conspiracy theories.  In episode 34,  our favorite armchair detective JT Townsend (writer of "Summer's Almost Gone" about the Bricca murders) presents the least popular theory of all... the Oswald as lone gunman concept.  For those that have been following along,  Lisa,  Aaron and I have refrained from offering our own thoughts on the most infamous murder in American history.  We are not here to persuade you or change your minds,  but to look at the life and death of the 35th president from as many angles as possible and let you draw your own conclusions.  As we approach November 22, 2021,  some 58 years since Deeley Plaza turned into the symbol for a more jaded and mature America, it is easy to see why this crime has refused to fade away.

  • Yeah Uh Huh Episode 33 - The Legacy of JFK with Will Cooper

Will Cooper returns to the show to help us with our Kennedy trilogy of podcasts.  Two of three of these shows are devoted to the devastating loss to our country on Nov. 22, 1963.  But we thought it very important to cover what the 35th president of our country actually achieved during his remarkable, televised administration. We talk about the culturally significant 1960 debate with Richard Nixon,  the Bay of Pigs Invasion and the terrifying Cuban Missile Crisis,  during which the World War 2 hero stared down the threat of thermonuclear war with the Soviet Union and ensure peace at a time when noone took it for granted.  Together with our co-host from California,  Aaron,  we put partisan politics aside to show that history will remember JFK as much than a victim of a heinous murder,  but a flawed man of great courage and audacity whose courage and influence informs us as we confront the problems of our own time.

  • Yeah Uh Huh Episode 32 - The Lone Star Speaks with Sara Peterson and Katanna Zachry

Conspiracy fatigue has settled over the assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy on November 22nd 1963.  Yet it remains difficult for some to get their head around the thought of a ne'er do well barely holding down a minimum wage job in a school book wharehouse toppling one of the most admired presidents of the 20th century.  Our guests Sara Peterson and Katanna Zachry are instructors in the MC Language Hub at Midland College.  As scholars, they interviewed roughly 140 individuals who had been close to the crime or the individuals who possibly participated in the murder of the president on that fateful Dallas afternoon.  And while they are no fans of the Warren commission report,  they do not take a position on who may have been responsible.  Instead,  their fascinating book presents the events from the eyes and words of the historical figures who lived it and allows the reader to draw their own conclusions.

This is the first of three episodes we will be releasing about JFK this month!

  • Yeah Uh Huh Episode 31 - The IOAT Occupation of Alcatraz with Mary Connolly

Mary Twiss Connolly is a great friend.  Mary is Lakota Indian,  and on a recent trip to San Francisco she was pleasantly surprised to find that her great aunt Stella Runnels Leach,  who she had fond memories of as a child, was a central figure in one of the most courageous and progressive examples of activism by indigenous citizens of the 1970's... the Indians Of All Tribes' (IOAT) occupation of Alcatraz Island.  As the resident medic, Stella was responsible for ensuring the health and well being of every man,  woman and child during the 19 months of the occupation,  navigating difficult obstacles imposed by Richard Nixon's hostile administration in addition to natural threats posed by a facility that had been left abandoned since it had last been used as a state prison six years before.  Stella worked closely with organizers Richard Oakes,  Lanada Means and John Trudell to try and reclaim a parcel of land that conditions of the Treaty of Laramie entitled them to.  The occupation ended peacefully,  just as the purchase of Manhattan Island for pennies on the dollar had some 200 years before.  But the actions of these courageous Americans will have a place in our hearts at Yeah Uh Huh for every Thanksgiving moving forward.

As an addendum to this episode,  Mary gave us a list of important IOAT members whose influence continues to affect positive change for indigenous people today

  • Yeah Uh Huh Episode 29 - Led Zeppelin and Zeppelin Day with Aaron!

Our co-host Aaron and I go back to 7th grade middle school.  We met in the infamous Mr. Meoski's science class,  but it was a year or so before we started hanging out and listening to tunes together.  He carried a boom box that that only seemed to play "Blizzard of Oz" and Billy Squier when we decided to wind on down the road of the complete Led Zeppelin catalog.  Of course,  we already knew "Stairway to Heaven",  "Black Dog",  "Whole Lotta Love" and all the epic rock jams in regular rotation on WEBN at the time.  But it was not until we started meticulously collecting all the cassettes of the studio recordings that we developed a true appreciation for the breadth and majesty of Zeppelin, the overlooked gems like "Out on the Tiles" and "Tea for One".  Soon,  we found ourselves making weekend pilgrimages to Everybody's Records,  a fine shop on Ridge Road that is better than ever today,  gathering every bootleg we could find.  "Copenhagen Warmups", "Earl's Court",  just anything.  There was even one from their 1977 Riverfront Coliseum show in Cincinnati.  Some of it was incredibly poor audio quality,  but we wore them out anyway.  By now,  we were known to partake of some recreational smokes on occasion,  and studious as we were at the time we spent the better part of a week listening to the entire Zeppelin discography together, pondering it almost metaphysically and recording our tangential thoughts on each song, as if anybody cared.  Pretentious as the exercise was,  it was just a blast to binge the music that way, completely unencumbered by the copyright concerns and riff stealing that would eventually haunt the band.  I searched for those notes and I am still convinced they exist somewhere in my garage or basement,  but this special episode of YUH is our attempt to recapture some of that magic of when Zeppelin was new to us,  and unlike anything we had ever seen or heard.  Every Wednesday since one random Wednesday in 1983 or 84 has been Zeppelin Day, and always will be!
