  • Songs We Dislike
This week’s theme is Songs We Dislike. Hear why Rob is offended by the lyrics of the Turtles’ big hit ‘Elenore’ and why Mossy thinks the lyrics of ‘Yummy Yummy’ (Ohio Express) are ‘juvenile’. Pat Boone offends twice in this program with the ‘appalling’ lyrics of the song ‘Technique’ and his ‘antiseptic’ rendition of ‘Ain’t That A Shame’. Mossy is unimpressed by Olivia Newton-John‘s song ‘Have You Never Been Mellow?’ calling it ‘wimpish’ while Rob is irritated by the ‘puerile’ boredom of ‘Mashed Potato’ (Billy Thorpe). However, Rob and Mossy disagree about Kate Bush‘s epic ‘Wuthering Heights’. Mossy describes Kate Bush‘s voice as ‘like Tiny Tim’s’ while Rob calls it one of his favourite songs of all time. Rob agrees with the poll that voted Charlene‘s ‘I’ve Never Been To Me’ as ‘The Worst Song Of The Seventies’. Despite all that many of the most disliked songs were very popular.

  • Girl Power
This week’s theme highlights a number of female groups. Five of the songs are rare numbers by Aussie female groups, of which there were not many in a male dominated industry. Beginning with the delicious ‘Good Morning How Are You’ from Scottish Aussie sisters, the Moir Sisters, it includes another sister duo (Cheetah) and their big hit ‘Walking In The Rain’. Covers of well-known songs are presented by the hard rock group, The Runaways (Wild Thing) and two other Aussie groups, Marcie & The Cookies (Walking Along) and Jon & The Australian Vamps (It’s Too Late).  Popular female group of the 60s was The Shirelles (Baby It’s You) and the song which Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys considered ‘the best pop song ever written’ – ‘Be My Baby’ produced by the Phil Spector group, The Ronettes.

Motown: the successful record label from the sixties which specialised in presenting soul music with wide pop appeal. Co -founder Smoky Robinson begins this week’s program with his group, The Miracles (You really Got A Hold On Me). Other fine performers include Marvin Gaye (I Heard It through the Grapevine) and The Four Tops (Reach Out I’ll Be There). However, Motown’s premier act and their most commercially successful group was The Supremes (Baby Love). There was also a tenuous and brief connection with Aussie group, The Easybeats (St Louis).
