This week’s line-up includes some great music and lyrics that consider the (what if) outcomes or consequences of loss ‘If You Go Away’, hope, ‘If I were Your Woman’ and revelation, ‘If You Could Read My Mind’ and ‘If Those Lips Could Only Speak’. Today’s artist includes two Dames, Olivia Newton John and Shirley Bassey and New Zealand Knight Sir John Rowles.

A darker theme this week where song writers look at the down side of relationships. Suspicion and Jealousy too often erodes and destroys love. Bill Withers poses the exact note with his ‘Who Is He And What Is He To You?’ while Queen ‘Jealousy’ and Terry Stafford ‘Suspicion’ perform seminal versions of the theme. Song stylist Nancy Wilson presents the intriguing narrative of ‘Guess Who I Saw Today?’ and Dr Hook has its own issues in ‘When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman’. Aussie contributions are Rick Springfield’s confessional ‘Jessie’s Girl’ and Jo Jo Zep’s seldom heard and underrated song ‘Losing Game’.

The expression ‘light and shade’ can be used in a variety of ways to highlight the variances in particular situations or circumstances. For this week’s theme, however, the use of the words LIGHT and SHADE will focus on songs that have these words appearing in their titles or embedded in their lyrics e.g. The Four Lads ‘Put a Light in the Window’ (title) and The Diamonds ‘Silhouettes’ (lyrics).

Going to sleep and dreaming is like taking an unusual and unexpected journey. Songwriters have used dreams in various ways. Sometimes it’s to mask the sadness of losing a loved one ‘In Dreams’ by Roy Orbison or as a way of bonding ‘Dreaming My Dreams With You’ by Colleen Hewett or Mama Cass’s  ‘Dream A Little Dream Of Me’. Then there is the haunting ‘Dream Weaver’ by Gary Wright and the sublime voice of Tony WIlliams fronting the Platters ‘My Dream’. ‘Talking In Your Sleep’ by The Romantics and walking in your sleep i.e. ‘Sleepwalk’ by Santo & Johnny are two aspects of sleeping, while perennial favourite Petula Clark presents her rather sardonic ‘Don’t Sleep in the Subway’. An interesting inclusion is the teen-tragic song from the fifties ‘Endless Sleep’ by Jody Reynolds.

Rob and Mossy have had a lot of hit (artists and songs) come and go over the eight years that they have been presenting Yesterday Once More. So imbedded in this week’s theme are songs with titles which incorporate the words COME and GO. The legendary Chuck Berry is having ‘No Particular Place to Go’, the group Fleetwood Mac is suggesting ‘Go your Own Way’ and LGBTI personality Elton John along with Kiki Dee keep singing ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’. The talented Australian group Mondo Rock pitch a popular song ‘Come Said the Boy’ while Australian Bev Harrell is inviting you to ‘Come over to My Place’.

This week we pay tribute to some of the wonderful volunteers who make JOY the great radio station it is today. We have interviewed twelve volunteers who have had links with ‘Yesterday Once More’ over the almost eight years we have been on air. A couple of worthy mentions are Anne, a stalwart of JOY for eighteen years with her heartfelt song choice featuring that rare combination of Roy Orbison and k.d.lang (Crying). Clayton who has kept us on air throughout the pandemic (Look What They’ve Done To My Song Ma) and our wonderful podcaster Julia, (I Have A Dream). Lastly, our reliable and skilled Office Admin support, Corey, who has assisted us for many years (Swingin’ On A Star). This is not to leave out the other volunteers in this program who have been staunch supporters of our program.

Are you an angel or a devil? Everyone has at least some angelic qualities and everyone has some devilish ones and songwriters over the years have written a variety of songs around these qualities. This week’s theme reveals songs that refer to the word DEVIL or its antonym ANGEL in their titles. Impish songs include Cliff Richard‘s ‘Devil Woman’ and Neil Sedaka‘s ‘Little Devil’. Saintly songs have both Tom Jones and Olivia Newton-John seeing Angels in the morning while Bobby Vee just can’t decide between ‘Devil or Angel”.

‘Nothing’ and ‘Everything’ are the opposite elements present in this week’s theme. To me the highlight is the sweet, poignant song from Bread (Everything I Own) sung and written by David Gates as a tribute to his late father. There are a couple of rarely played singers such as Gilbert O’Sullivan (Nothing Rhymed) and Ral Donner (She’s Everything). A special mention too for that fabulous ‘Lil Miss Dynamite’, Brenda Lee (Sweet Nothin’s). There is a strong Aussie flavour this week featuring Marcie & The Cookies (All Or Nothing), Pat Carroll (All Kinds Of Everything), Normie Rowe (I Who Have Nothing) and Peter Allen ( Everything Old Is New Again).

A nickname or a term of endearment is a word or phrase used to address or describe a person, for which one feels love or affection. TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, this week’s theme, presents songs with some enduring words of affection such as ‘darling’ as portrayed by the Beatles. Timeless titles like ‘baby’ and ‘sweetheart’ are delivered by Sonny and Cher, Sherbet and Peggy Lee with sweetness being associated with the Maguire Sisters’ ‘ Sugartime’, the Archies‘ ‘Sugar Sugar’ and ABBA‘s ‘Honey Honey’.

‘Keeping independent voices on air’ and ‘We Are You‘ are the twin slogans of this year’s Radiothon. We have stressed the need to come together and support each other and JOY. This is especially important in these challenging times we live in. We share a common bond under the JOY umbrella and this we must support and sustain. ‘We Are Family’ (Sister Sledge) emphasises this common bond. Other songs complement and promote the idea of we and us and togetherness. ‘Love Will Keep Us Together’ (Captain & Tennille) suggests the glue which binds us and Barbra Streisand’s poignant reminder – ‘People who need people, are the luckiest people in the world’ which stresses our human need for each other.
