这首诗是维多利亚时期（19世纪）英国诗人威廉（WillaimErnestHenley,1849-1903）的名篇。这首诗也是从阶下囚到南非第一任黑人总统曼德拉经常背诵的一首诗（也许是都有过刻骨铭心的磨难经历吧）。华纳兄弟影片公司于2009年出品的一部传记式影片《成事在人》中引用，因此而广为人知。诗人从小体弱多病，患有肺结核症，一只脚被截掉；为了保住另一只脚，他一生都奋力和病魔抗争，不向命运屈服。"Invictus，拉丁语（=unconquerable），“不可征服”之意。此诗是诗人在病榻上所作。

不可征服

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be,
For my unconquerable soul.
