"The moment is here. It's time to teach him. The world doesn’t have room for weakness, and it's my responsibility to make sure he understands that. I lift him up and place him on the counter, his small frame steady, curious. He’s my son, and it’s my job to shape him into a man—the man who will carry my name, my legacy.
He looks up at me, eyes wide with trust. He doesn’t question. He doesn’t doubt. I tell him to stand. But he hesitates. That hesitation—it’s a crack in his foundation. A sign of weakness. So I push him further. "Stand up, Lyle. Trust me. I’ll catch you."
He listens. He always listens. He doesn’t cry. He’s quiet, obedient, focused. His eyes still locked on mine as I hold my hands out in front of him. He takes a deep breath, his small chest rising and falling, before he leaps off the counter, his face full of faith in me, in what I’ve promised.
But I step back. I let him fall.
The sound of his body hitting the floor is jarring, and for a moment, there’s nothing. No words. Just silence.
Lyle looks up at me, stunned, hurt—his trust shattered. I know this moment will stay with him, a mark on his soul. It’s not just a lesson; it’s a blow that will echo through his life. I kneel down, my voice cold as I look him in the eyes.
"That’s why you can’t trust everybody."
And just like that, the lesson is set in motion."
