Lots of Fun, Laughter and Entertainment for Children
The Ninth Birthday Wishis a high-energy, engaging childrenâs adventure story. Bril and Arisa have a lesson to learn, and the author, Bruce Arrington, makes learning and accepting this lesson a combination of intense, exciting, fun and endearing. The fact that Bril and Arisa, the twins celebrating their birthday, are fraternal as opposed to identical plays right into the conflict between the two siblings.
This story is told in poetic form. The word choices are well thought out. They arenât just words thrown together to complete the end-rhymes. They create the visual image or express the attitudes and feelings of the characters in the same way that prose would. In fact, as the story is flowing and unfolding, you can almost forget about the rhymes altogether. The images in the book are done in watercolors and look like they could have been drawn by a child. As expected, the colors are vibrant and the individual drawings are not perfect like an adult might draw them, but they contain the clarity and verve that bring the words to life.
In addition to reading the book, I listened to the audio version by Ramona King. Her reading is wonderfully entertaining and her accent is perfect for this undertaking. She skillfully dramatizes exclamation points and personalities and easily captures the temperaments of each character. Her ability to read the poetry at just the right pace and cadence combined with the right moods and attitudes locks readers into this adventure and carries them through the story. This fifteen-minute narration will entice young children to listen to the audio over and over again.
This is a great story that children will enjoy. So be sure to get the audiobook and the illustrated e-book combination and let your child hear, read and see this humorous fulfillment of two birthday wishes.
Charming Middle Grade Adventure!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
This is a charming illustrated children's story, I really enjoyed it.
Bril and Arisa are twins. Bril is a boy and Arisa is a girl. However, they both have different temperaments. Bril loves to read and play quietly by constructing huge sand castles in the garden sand pit, while Arisa is very active and likes to climb or play with her dolls/action figures. On their ninth birthday they are granted one wish each, but because Arisa becomes impatient and blurts out her wish first, the wishes get mixed up and they find themselves living the other's wish. What happens next is an adventure neither will ever forget.
The story is quite entertaining. Set in part rhyming verse, the story takes the reader on an adventure. However, the flow felt a little jerky due to it being in part rhyme. I would have preferred if it was all rhyme, or all story. Nevertheless, I love the illustrations, which are bright and colourful. The artist, Florence Jayne, has painted the scenes wonderfully.
