A SECOND CHANCE

Guardian is a WWII plane who is relating her story in first person. She goes back in time to tell how she met her pilot and together they valiantly fought. One day her fuel tank leaks; Guardian succeeds in getting her pilot down alive. Now that the war is over, she finds herself in a scrap metal junkyard and wonders what became of her pilot. While the rest of the planes are resigned to their fate, Guardian hopes that she will one day fly again, but day after day planes disappear from the yard to be sold for scrap metal.

One day the gate opens to a new owner. The planes will be repaired and sent to various museums. Guardian rejoices that her optimism has proven true, but what has happened to that soldier who once flew and loved her?

Targeted for audiences five and older, this approximately twenty-five page book is really a beginning reader chapter book. There are a few simple, but attractive, illustrations. This book is a well-written sweet story embedding elements of history. While I enjoyed the plot, I noted typos and editing errors on the cover and inside the kindle text edition. If not for these, I would have given the book five stars. I would still recommend it, especially for children who are early readers interested in planes or history.

What a cool story about Guardian who in time becomes Guardian Forever !

I surely enjoyed this story told from Guardian herself about not giving up! This can have a very powerful moral lesson for us all.

Therefore, because of the great way this was shared - story and photos or illustration I wish to rate this for five stars and recommend it for young and us older ones with a young heart or who needs this encouragement, too!

Never Waver In What You Believe In

A great story that honors the military men who fly for the safety of our country through the eyes of a planed dubbed "Guardian". A lesson on second changes and standing for what you believe in even when those around you don't believe. A story that is an encouragement to young and old, alike!

Guardian to the skies, once again, let her rise

I picked this book up for several reasons, the incredible cover is among them.

After reading it myself, I sat down and my lil girl read it to me. She loves it. I was asked if this is part of a series of airplane stories. It's sweet, fun, and a dreamer's perfect tale of never give up. This is now a family favorite! I hope we'll be able to put it on our physical shelves on day soon too!

Totally love it! I am a huge fan of children's book and a dreamer. This book totally builds up hope and teaches you not to give up on your dreams. Another short yet worth reading book, can't put it down! A must read for children and to all young at hearts!

Sweet, but lengthy picture book

My son (6) and I reviewed this book for Mother Daughter Book Reviews. Here are our thoughts:

SON SAYS:

I think it's cool what they did using the bees and their wings to make the letter "B". I liked the pictures. My favorite one is the one where Barney is skipping because it's funny. Bees don't have legs so how do they skip? Hamilton Troll is one of the characters. He is helpful in the story because he helps Barney Bee to fly. Barney Bee is the other character. When we first meet Barney, he really likes to eat pollen and he is too heavy. He learns to not eat too much pollen and to exercise too. My favorite part of the book is when Barney is skipping because it looks funny. He looks funny in a lot of the pictures. My least favorite part of the book is when Barney Bee can't fly because I felt bad for him. I would eat strawberries all day long because it's my favorite food. I thought the book was ok. The story was not exciting enough for me. I think littler kids than me would like this story.

MOM SAYS:

Hamilton Troll Meets Barney Bee is a sweet rhyming picture book featuring a friendly little troll who happens upon a busy little bee who teaches him all about bees. This story is the third volume in the Hamilton Troll series by Kathleen J. Shields. In these books, Hamilton Troll is a shorter, friendlier troll than we would normally encounter in children's books and I think he is a good central character.

There are actually two interwoven themes in this book. On the one hand, there is educational value as Hamilton learns certain facts about bees such as their inability to see the colour red and how male bumble bees cannot sting. There were also some "fun facts" interspersed within the book. I thought this was good.

On the other hand, we also see how Barney is a plump bee that eats so much pollen that he can no longer fly. Hamilton teaches him about the importance of nutrition and exercise. The themes themselves are appropriate for this age group. That being said, I do feel that the book is quite lengthy at 48 pages and the word density is quite high (e.g., 50+ words per page). I think perhaps the author could have focused on teaching the reader about bees OR about nutrition and exercise. My son was losing focus as I was reading this book because there was so much information.

The illustrations are bright, colourful, and very kid-friendly. My son was fascinated by the pictures of the bee in particular because he is used to seeing small bees in real life. I love the feel of the illustrations with the outlines of the characters and objects appearing to be "coloured in" by marker. I love how, in the back of the book, there were illustrations of the flowers shown in the story with each flower's name beside the pictures so they can be identified. That was a nice touch.

I can really appreciate how difficult it is to tell a story with good rhyming and cadence. For the most part, I felt that the rhyming worked.
