Community Educators: A Resource for Educating and Developing Our Youth asserts that the relationships between education, community, and democracy are inseparable and illustrates that education is broader than just schooling. Harbour challenges current thinking about education and reveals how the public participates in the education and development of youth. This book is a call for action and responsibility both individual and collective to transform education beyond simply reforming schools.
The author's professional educational experiences, combined with stories from the field by and about youth and community educators, exemplify the importance of citizen collaboration among the various sectors of the community, including youth, parents, schools, businesses, and neighborhood residents. The book includes a foreword by Kettering Foundation president David Mathews.
Members Reviews:
It takes a community
I've read this book cover to cover and I highly recommend it to people who are committed to the education of young people in a democracy. The author has a remarkable career working with public education and communities. Like John Dewey, she realizes the tremendous importance of schools being at the center of community life not just for youth but for everyone. I gave a copy to our public school superintendent with the hope he will share it with all the members of our local Board of Education. It's not simply a message about engaging youth in their schools, but more dynamically it is about engaging youth in their communities. Place matters. Dr. Harbour's personal track record in school improvement and success puts her in a highly respected position to guide others who want to elevate and illuminate the relationship of community education to societal well-being. Visions of Collaboration
If you and stakeholders are looking for new and innovative ways to involve the community in educating our youth, this book is a must read. Dr. Harbour makes a compelling case for the notion "it takes a village to raise a child." I was left feeling compelled to join with members of my community in expand the vision of what is possible. Thank you Dr. Harbour for your wisdom and foresight
REENFORCEMENT
A REINFORCEMENT THAT WE MUST ALL WORK TOGETHER IN THE EDUCATION OF ALL OF OUR CHILDREN..........NO MAN IS AN ISLAND IN THIS............IT WILL TAKE ALL OF US , PARENTS, TEACHERS AND COMMUNITIES.....ALL WORKING TOGETHER..THESE ARE DIFFERENT TIMES AND WILL REQUIRE DIFFERENT MEANS AS SOLUTIONS
A Community Eye-opener
Community Educators: A Resource for Educating and Developing Our Youth builds connections between the reader and the soul of education while it reveals the diverse and creative ways in which neighborhood leaders and teachers address the needs of young people. Each story becomes your story, my story and together confirms that every effort to connect a child with resources makes a difference towards their success. Dr. Harbour has invited us into the living room of the American neighborhood to not only investigate what has worked, but, also to seek additional ways in which we can build stronger educational networks in our communities.
