A tender recollection of a childhood summer.

Bruce (father of Ben) Fogle conjures up beautiful images of summers spent at his family's summer cottage on a lake just outside Toronto. Interspersed with his recollections are stories of the indigenous Indian tribes as narrated by his uncle who is recovering from a nervous breakdown following the failure of his marriage. Bruce and his friends at the lake are unaware of this and include uncle Rube in many of their activities as they would any other children.

One of my favourite descriptive passages comes towards the end of the book when the family go to watch a display of synchronised swimming by some of the local ladies whom Bruce describes as somewhat "buxom".

The postscript was particularly poignant.

Important read

This book is another important read, to understand the true difficulties faced during WW2. These women show a remarkable strength of character and unfailing will to survive very difficult situations with courage and grace. I'm not ashamed to say this book made me cry for these women but also to laugh with them too. A fantastic book

Fascinating and thought provoking

A really interesting true story, not just about a Nazi heritage, but also the complications of being adopted. I liked Jennifer's narrative interwoven with the objective commentary. Not exactly great performances, but that's not so relevant for a factual account. Everyone should read this - some very important messages.

A tale of hate and compassion

A perceptive account of this lovely person's suffering when she discovers her grandfather was a Nazi psychopathic monster. She tells how she copes with her inherited guilt and bravely finds peace.

Excellent first-hand account of a harrowing experience

This is an intense, detailed, personal account of one man's experience of having his mountain paradise threatened by the destructive force of wildfire. It begins with background information: how Ohana came to be, then time, money, and manpower involved in making it not only a home, but an extended family campus for generations. When that campus is threatened by an uncontained wildfire, the author and his family must flee with only minutes to prepare. As they wait far from home, desperate for information about the condition of their home, the stress and anxiety take its toll. Told in the first-person narrative, the author makes you feel like you're right in the action with him. A quick, easy read; you won't want to put it down!

Honest and Brave Telling - Must Read

Evacuee: Behind the Lines of a Fire Storm is a compelling and gripping first hand telling of a harrowing and terrifying ordeal that affected many people on June 9, 2012 in Colorado. One of the most destructive wild fires spread and caused people to have to evacuate their homes fast in order to save their lives and the lives of their loved ones. This book is an incredible rollercoaster ride. Not only is it beautifully written, but the story is relayed with such honesty, bravery and emotion. I encourage everyone to read this novel and learn how wild fires can dramatically affect our lives. Excellent job by J.S. Cooper

Heartfelt

Started and finished Evacuee yesterday- well said. The story of running into the firefighter outside of your hotel was especially touching. The raw honesty about the stress of the situation, how it directly impacted his family, and his fears surrounding work/life balance were all heartfelt. I sincerely hope they never have to endure an experience of that magnitude again.

Bob Miller - A Phan Thiet Hero

If you want to read about a Vietnam Chopper pilot who was somewhat cynical about the war, but a courageous and skillfull pilot, who risked his life to perform for his commander and his troops, then read this book.

This isn't just a book review, it is a testimony from me. I was there. I witnessed what he writes about. Early, most every morning, their choppers assembled, with LTC Alves, (AKA - Blackhawk)in the lead chopper often piloted by Miller. They would lift off on their mission is a Fury that the Vietcong learned to fear. I said a silent prayer for Miller, Blackhawk,the other pilots, and the grunts every day.

My heart was heavy when some of the ships would return to the LZ hot, bringing the wounded, and body bags in. No time was wasted as they left back to the action. Time after Time. Day after Day.

Miller was a highly decorated Warrent Officer. You must read what Blackhawk said about him. There is no doubt that Miller would have taken a bullet for his commander, and there is no doubt that Blackhawk would have taken a bullet for him.

It was my honor and privilege to serve at LZ Betty under the protection of Miller, Alves, and each and every one of the 3/506 troopers.

REAL MEN DO CRY

I'm not a paid reviewer just someone who originally bought this book to read about someone I served under in another capacity, Lt. Col. Manuel A. Alves, who is perfectly depicted by the author. I was, however, mesmerized by the entire novel. This novel is exactly what it says: a diary. It's all substance with no fluff. I especially like the way Bob Miller transforms from a maverick to a caring comrade. The friendships he develops are so necessary to get through the daily horrors of war and those horrors, ultimately, get up close and personal.

A very interesting book

I wanted to have some idea of what Huey pilots went through in South Viet Nam. This book gave me an excellent frame of reference. I am friends with other Viet Nam Veterans,so the stories told in this book both confirm what I've been told by others as well as hearing new stories of what things were like in Southeast Asia in 1968. i would have enjoyed working with Bob Miller,I think,had I had a chance. Well worth the time & money for this book. I absolutely recommend it. Easily Five Stars in my book.

Short and sweet

I enjoyed reading Miller's book which was in essence his diary while serving in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. I liked his sense of humor but would have preferred for him to go into a little more detail. Overall I would recommend this book for someone who wants to know more about what a helicopter pilot experienced in Vietnam.

I could not put it down!

I was assined to the 192nd from 1971- 72. I did not know the auther and wasn't even in the same platoon. I was in the gun platoon (Tiger Sharks) assighned as a Crew Chief and a Door Gunner.
