After a series of strokes, Oliver must choose an inheritor, even though his two entitled daughters and ambitious adopted son dont always seem worthy of his legacy.
The Condor Passes is a simmering dynastic saga of three generations colliding in their battle to control an empire.

Excellent performance. Interesting sweeping plot. But the characters....
I listened to the end because I wanted to know how things turned out. But every character survived till the end and even some who didn't were detestable. The novel would have benefited from greater complexity in the characters.

Title: Nothing Holds Back the Night

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 5 mins

    Publisher: Audible Studios for Bloomsbury
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 12 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Only a teenager when Delphine was born, Lucile raised two daughters largely alone. She was a former child model from a Bohemian family, younger and more glamorous than the other mothers: always in lipstick, wayward and wonderful. But as Delphine grew up, Lucile's occasional sadness gave way to overwhelming despair and delusion. She became convinced she was telepathic, in control of the Paris metro system; she gave away all her money; she was hospitalized, medicated, and released in a kind of trance. Young Delphine was left to wonder: What changed her, or what shaped her all along? In this brilliant investigation into her own family history, Delphine de Vigan attempts to "write her mother," seeking out something essential as she interviews aging relatives, listens to recordings, and reads Lucile's own writings. It is a history of luminous beauty and rambunctious joy, of dark secrets and silences. There are untimely deaths and failures of memory. There are revelations and there is the ultimately unknowable. And in the face of the unknowable, personal history becomes fiction: De Vigan must choose from differing accounts and fill in important gaps, using her writer's imagination to reconstruct a life. De Vigan writes her most expansive novel yet with acute self-awareness and marvelous sympathy. Nothing Holds Back the Night is a remarkable work, universally recognizable and singularly heartbreaking.

    Four Stars
    Good read, rings true.
Writing can do nothingâ.it allows you to ask questions and interrogate memory
Delphine de Viganâs Nothing Holds Back The Night is a curious book to categorise. On one level, it should be easy : it is an account of the difficult, yet sometimes vibrantly experienced life of de Viganâs mother. Lucile Poirier, born in 1946, was one of 9 children born to Georges and Liane Poirier. The family was extremely Bohemian. Lucile, remarkably beautiful, a rather introverted child in some ways, helped family finances through money earned as a child model. The family was beset by tragedy, and there was some history of mental and emotional fragility. There were also various family secrets, the nature of which can probably be surmised by the reader.
Delphine herself was born when Lucile was 19. She had fallen in love with the young brother of one of her fatherâs colleagues, and the two married in a hurry. Lucile was different from Delphineâs classmatesâ mothers â more vibrant, more playful, more sophisticated, fun and glamorous. But she was also unstable and the instability took over. The marriage itself foundered quite quickly. Delphine had various love affairs which would buoy her up. Some of her partners were also unstable. Delphine and her younger sister Manon, sometimes with Lucile, sometimes with their father Gabriel and his new family, had a childhood far from ideal. There were periods where Lucile was institutionalised due to the severity of her bipolar disorder.
The book starts with Lucileâs shocking death in 2008, and Delphineâs discovery of her body. de Vigan at this point was an already published writer.
âLucileâs pain was part of our childhood and later part of our adult life. Lucileâs pain probably formed my sister and me. Yet every attempt to explain it is doomed to failure.

    Narrator: Juliet Stevenson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 1 min
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-02-14
    Publisher: Canongate Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 48 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Yvonne Carmichael has worked hard to achieve the life that she always wanted: a high-flying career in genetics, a beautiful home, a good relationship with her husband and their two grown-up children. Then one day she meets a stranger at the Houses of Parliament and begins a passionate affair with him - a decision that will put everything she values at risk.
At first she believes she can keep the relationship separate from the rest of her life, but she can't control what happens next. All of her careful plans spiral into greater deceit and, eventually, a life-changing act of violence.
Apple Tree Yard is a psychological thriller about a woman's adultery and an insightful examination of the values we live by and the choices we make, from an acclaimed writer at the height of her powers.
    Critic Reviews:
Doughty is a brilliant storyteller who knows how to build the suspense to breaking point. (The Times)
A compelling cautionary tale of what happens when fantasy begins to occlude real life. The trouble with stories is, they are addictive, Doughty states. In this case, she may never have written a truer word. (Guardian)
Apple Tree Yard is a chilling novel, in part because of the unsparing light it shines on our ability to deceive ourselves. Doughty has a particular gift for unsettling stories, for making us ask difficult questions of ourselves, our own relationships and choices, and this is her strongest book yet. It's not a comfortable read, but it is entirely compelling. (Stephanie Merritt, Observer)
Taut and psychologically persuasive ... A disquieting, perceptive and gripping read. (Daily Mail)
    Gripping. (Sunday Times)
Welcome to Louise Doughty's world in which individuals are complex and fallible ... Doughty drops sharp, shiver-inducing insights, like winter raindrops, on every page ... The story is compelling but Doughty makes sure that we're enthralled by teasing us with tantalising glimpses of future events ... Her writing is piercing and potent, overpowering emotions captured in sharp, pithy phrases ... The court scene is one of the best I've ever read, the suspense and tension building to a taut peak ... Riveting. (Independent on Sunday)
If a prologue to a novel is to whet the reader's appetite, Louise Doughty provides irresistible temptation with the opening of Apple Tree Yard... A compelling read ... Recollection, interspersed with the growing tension as the trial plays out in the Old Bailey, provides a perfectly dovetailed structure. But within the thriller framework lies a wealth of acutely observed detail, a dissection of social attitudes and an examination of lust, trust, predatory sex, risky behaviour and responsibility ... there is considerably more to Apple Tree Yard than thrilling narrative alone. (Herald)
Nobody who reads Apple Tree Yard is likely to complain about feeling short-changed ... Here the sharp domestic details are powerfully combined with (among other things) a dark crime thriller, a gripping courtroom drama and an unforced meditation on the pleasures and dangers of self-deception ... Superbly teasing.

Anyway, from the 3hrs offered... it was great... I couldn't wait to get to Emma's story... I wish however, her guys was a bit more dominate like Adam... but he was good for Emma...
Story was enjoyable...but ending... I am sure there is like half of the book missing...
Narration was great... same as the other two books..
Worth a Credit or sale... not a buy b/c I am not sure this is all of the book....
Where is the rest of it....I just stops.
Half of the story is missing. It's a great series. I will have to purchase the book to read the rest. Disappointing.
    Great Story
Not super mushy or romantic but still sexy as he'll. Emma Wade was the toughest of the 3. Her character was raw, edgy, and more related than Kate and Megan. Overall a good read.
    these books captured me.
I love Joys Ryan's books. They have character's that make u care about them and there dilemma's the plot was intriguing. I downloaded all I could find. And they keep me listening. The listen till I have to go to sleep, and then start in the morning while eating breakfast and while I clean the house. The narrators does well bringing the character's to life. I !love fact that audible has so many of my favorite author's. My fire in jammed packed.
    Kept me on my toes
What does Jennifer Stark bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The way she reads keeps me captivated. I love her voice.

Just as Lois Maynard is about to sell the family's summer home, her domineering and troubled older sister, Judith, returns and a mysterious murder disrupts the household.
    Members Reviews:
A cast of unusually appealing characters
What made the experience of listening to The Swimming Pool the most enjoyable?
I've read the book many times; when read aloud, it unfolds in Rinehart's unhurried, beautifully nuanced style.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Swimming Pool?
Lots of cliff-hangers here; even knowing in advance who dunnit and what's coming, still a pleasure.
What does Laurel Lefkow bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She reads beautifully, with just enough change to make all the characters individuals. Her own voice has just the cultivated, well-educated cadence and accent that Miss Maynard certainly had.
If you could take any character from The Swimming Pool out to dinner, who would it be and why?
It would have to be the narrator, Miss Maynard, trying to cope with harsh realities, when her wealthy, privileged past had not prepared her for post-depression life with only three servants, or earning a living. Or murder.
    Any additional comments?
As all of Rinehart's plots, this one has layers, like an onion. Murder to cover up a social scandal seems pretty old fashioned, but the book is memorable because of the cast of charming, believable characters.
    One of her better novels
There is a good size cast of characters in this novel and a beautiful country house, The Birches. Lois, the narrator character, is a sympathetic character. Her brother Phil and her nephew Bill are also sympathetic characters. Even the mysterious Terrence O'Brien is sympathetic though he could have kept fewer secrets. However, if O'Brien kept fewer secrets, the novel would have been much shorter. Sometimes, when I listen to audio books, I speed them up some. Even though this is an 11 hour listen, I would not speed it up. You will miss out on some of the plot. This was written after WW2 so it may be one of the last novels written by the author who died in 1952. Multiple murders and many suspects. However, it is possible to guess who is the murderer, by paying attention to the characters and the conversations.
My favorite character is Henrietta, the chicken. She only has a bit part, but she is endearing. O'Brien's other chickens are just chickens. Henrietta is special. I regret that the author does not mention where Henrietta ends up. (Yeah, I know she is a fictional chicken but I was hoping for a happy ending for her. )
    A very good story
Rinehart was an exceptionally good story-teller. She writes really strong female characters, and the main protagonist/narrator in this complex and intriguing story of the past catching up with people is no exception. Very good narration.
    A good read,
Another excellent Mary Robert Rinehart. Thank you Audible, I am hoping to collect as many of her books as possible in this formation

    Critic Reviews:
A fabulous book. Watch Over Me is a poignant and beautifully crafted story...pretty impossible to put down. (9/10)(Novelicious)
This has got to be the most touching and emotional book I've read this year. Watch Over Me is such a delicate and beautiful read that you can't help but fall into the storyline from the first page. (5/5) (Reabookreview)
One of the best books Ive ever read. This is a book that deserves to be read by everybody... An amazing debut novel from this magnificent writer who I am sure is going to be a massive success with, I hope, many more novels on the way in the future. (Kim the Book Worm)
    Members Reviews:
Loved the story and loved narration
Would you listen to Watch Over Me again? Why?
I will definitely listen to the story again in a bit. The story was capturing and I have related to it. I loved Helen McAlpine narration and her ability to use different accents. She is brilliant and she is definitely part of the success of this audiobook.
What about Helen McAlpines performance did you like?
Brilliant. One of the best. I will certainly look for books read by Helen :-)
a bit more than just a love story
I found the author's thoughts on the afterlife interesting. It was predictable, but enjoyable non the less.
Twee and cosy, like a magazine story
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not worth the listen. Storyline too predictable from early on. There were plot twists and turns, but direction still obvious. Too many descriptions of people's clothing and outfits.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Art world was unconvincingly portrayed: would an agent really drive up from London to rural Aberdeenshire to a gallery opening? Would an artist donate a work of considerable value to an Oxfam shop? The fictional town of Glen Avich is very strange. For a start, every one has blue eyes, apparently. Not a single character is mentioned as having brown eyes. Even with inbreeding, that would be truly remarkable.

    Publisher's Summary:
They said what they would do, and we did not listen. Then they did what they said they would do.
So ends the first chapter of this brilliantly listenable counterfactual novel, reminding us that Americas Christian fundamentalists have been consistently clear about their vision for a "Christian Nation" and dead serious about acquiring the political power to achieve it. When President McCain dies and Sarah Palin becomes president, the listener, along with the nation, stumbles down a terrifyingly credible path toward theocracy, realizing too late that the Christian right meant precisely what it said.
In the spirit of Philip Roths The Plot Against America, one of Americas foremost lawyers lays out in chilling detail what such a future might look like: Constitutional protections dismantled; all aspects of life dominated by an authoritarian law called The Blessing, enforced by a totally integrated digital world known as the "Purity Web." Listeners will find themselves haunted by the questions the narrator struggles to answer in this fictional memoir: "What happened, why did it happen, and how could it have happened?"

You will either love or hate this book
If you love this book - you will also be very scared. I guess if you hate this book you would be hopeful that it's story might come to pass.
    Scary Yet Engrossing
    Any additional comments?
This was an incredibly good book. All of it seemed so plausible. In fact, at one point while I was listening to it, my wife (who had only heard a few minutes of it) asked me if it was fiction or non-fiction. This is one of those books that some people will hate and others will love, so listen to it with an open mind. You'll find it an engrossing tale of where we could be headed as a country, or perhaps a cautionary one.
    Just read 1984
This was the first book in as long as I can remember that I have not actually been able to finish. Just read George Orwell's 1984 and be done with it. At least Orwell wrote with a touch of subtlety and art in the message. The dogmatic spoon-feeding of Christian Nation is just too much to stand for the length of the book. After all, this is supposed to be a novel, not a blog post.
Please note, I do not disagree with the point of view from which the book is written, only the method of delivery.
MUST read! Perfect balance to 299 Days!
CHALLENGE TO CHRISTIANS: I am a Christian, but also a strong Constitutionalist. Our laws matter, and the Constitutional Republic is the way that our laws protect the minority views against mob rule. Every single time in this book that you find yourself silently cheering for the way that Christianity finally quashes evil, I want you to mentally reverse the entire story and put Islam in Christianity's place. THAT'S the danger of a theocracy. Now take it to real life. Every bill we pass giving preferential treatment to OUR religion (prayer, 10 Commandments, etc) systematically destroys the very thing that had kept us free to worship as we like without persecution. Those laws can easily be flipped in the next administration to outlaw the very religion you revel in it protecting. As an American, please remember that.
This is a perfect balance to the 299 Days series. As in, two sides of the exact same coin. In 299 Days, America's freedoms are lost to a liberal agenda. In Christian Nation, it falls to a conservative one.

    Publisher's Summary:
Peaceful Tales - three lighthearted stories that are designed to help you fall asleep quickly and naturally. All YOU need to do is lie back, close your eyes, and listen. What could be easier? Remember being read to sleep as a child? Wasn't it one of your favorite things? Well, who says you have to be a kid for it to work? Not me.
These soothing, fanciful tales will allow you to relax and transport yourself to another place, a peaceful place. They are gentle stories written intentionally without conflict.
I have suffered from sleepless nights most of my life - until now. With your mind focused on something positive and peaceful, you can allow yourself to drift off. I like to call them "mini vacations for the mind." You can also use them as your "happy place" whenever the need arises. I use them at the dentist office.

    Finding Peace
What did you love best about Peaceful Tales, Vol.1?
Listening to these fanciful, original stories in the author's own soothing voice, definitely transports you to that zone of enjoyment when falling asleep. It's very hard to write a review since it's hard to stay awake! Kind of the opposite of what most authors would want to hear, but for Bonnie O'Neill I imagine this means success. All I can say is, it works!
I found myself relaxing and getting lulled to sleep comfortably and most importantly...naturally. No pills, teas, drops or sprays....just her sweet voice that brings one back to your mom, grandmother, or favorite aunt reading you bedtime stories as a kid. There's something so comforting about that alone. The rhythm of how her tales ebb and flow gives you moments to just drift off or actually fall asleep.
Bonnie O'Neill has created that perfectly elusive balance, through her images and characters, of not being too boring so that you might not want to listen again, while calming you down enough not to keep you awake or anxious from having to know what happens next. I'm not aware of anyone else accomplishing this before, short of hypnotism.

VERY RUGGED - THE WORST OF THE BLACK PANTHERS
    Any additional comments?
This rugged, deep backstory of the violent reaction to the Vietnam WAr, and to racial injustice by both the Panthers and others is why I personally have to take a break between novels.
I've come to really admire the values, tenacity and decision making process of the hero, Smokey Dalton, aka Bill Grimshaw, who saved a young boy, Jimmy, from the FBI after witnessing the killing of MLK Jr.. Jimmy had found the nearest cop to give the officer his eyewitness account, one that did not gel with the reported account, as an act of citizenship and courage, but was about to be hustled away, maybe even out of existence , when Smokey got the two of them out of the city, out of the state, and to a new existence and home in Chicago; thus the name change.
Jimmy and he are actually good for one another, even if Smokey doesn't quite know it yet. In this volume, it is summertime. Jimmy's special teacher, paid by several black parents to deliver the education promised but not given by the school system, is an upright, middle aged, admirable and loving person, who herself has a brilliant son, gone off to a prestigious college at Yale, doing well for his first year. But she hasn't heard from him in several months, and is worried. She is just managing on her budget, and cannot afford the then expensive phone calls- remember this is the late 1960's and cell phones are only used by the military, if in existence even then- so not hearing from him is worrisome, but not too bad. However, knowing Smoke's an investigator, she does ask him if they can work something out financially for him to check up on
the boy, Daniel Kirkland. They work out a trade; Smokey decides to make it as interesting as he can for Jimmy, hiring an older teen friend, Malcolm, as caretaker, when
Smokey gets going on his research.
What I loved is how Kris Nelscott makes the characters so alive, real and consistent. Both Jimmy , Malcom , and Smokey interact in ways that make you know in your gut how
they are facing and dealing with prejudice - that "other" reality - and help each other in
ways that I would call loving without being obsequious or denying their own realities and
core values. This aspect of her storytelling is meaningful to me. It's not a Perry Mason
    mystery.
Thereafter unfolds a tangled, long, and increasingly disturbing search for the missing son of Grace Kirkland, Daniel.
