Beautiful intertwining of characters

If you could sum up Don't Stand So Close in three words, what would they be?

A psychiatrist has a traumatic encounter. Instead of dealing with what happened afterwards, she sinks into a grey fog of stagnation and dependency. She presses pause on her life. But then a combative teenager girl rings her doorbell, and it brings a gust of unwanted truth into her haze of a life. The story begins with the girl at the door.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Blue Cunningham. The author really captured a troubled, seductive teenager quite well. I even felt quite sympathetic for the "adult" who mishandled the situation with her.

Have you listened to any of Julia Barries other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't, but she has a lovely voice, and she captured a sophisticated, troubled woman as well as she captured a emotional, troubled teenager.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not at first, but after a little while, for sure.

Any additional comments?

I felt a little frustrated the main character Stella didn't see more of what happened coming (it was apparent to me that her first client was a narcissist, but she didn't see it right away), and same with another guy in her life, but therapists have their blind spots just like regular people. She was still an observant therapist. So was her boss. The way it went backwards in time worked for me. I'm surprised it worked as well as it did. It felt quite smooth actually- what was revealed was revealed in time, even though the whole of it was not chronological.

The Past Comes back to haunt you

Julie Barrie & Luana did very well on the production of this book the overall storyline was actually written well. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this Audiobook.

Interesting

What made the experience of listening to Don't Stand So Close the most enjoyable?

Going from past to present and it being told from the views of the different characters.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Most of the time. It kept me guessing by only revealing a little bit at a time from different characters. Although I did guess the basic plot it was still enjoyable because of the way it was written.

Any additional comments?

The subject matter was a little dark and could be upsetting to some. The author did a good job of only giving the details that were needed without being overly graphic during the assault scenes.

Showed promise in the beginning, but...

I feel like the characters were quite one-dimensional.

bought this book out of curiosity...was surprisingly good...like, really good (still a weird read though..)...

Also...the narrator's voice is amazing... :)

All About the Fluids

This story leaves no bodily fluid unconsidered. The descriptions are graphic, and there are definitely some parts that made me feel uncomfortable (due to the "ick factor"), but overall, I enjoyed listening. It's the first-person narrative and the charming personality of the main character that keeps this book from being truly vulgar. The reader gives a good performance, although she doesn't quite manage to portray the youthfulness of the 18-year-old main character. Overall, this was an enjoyable listening experience.

A drinking game I just thought of....

Listen to this audio book and take a shot whenever she says "pussy" or "smegma" . You won't be conscious by Chapter 3. Loved it.

Strange but captivating.

The overall performance was fantastic, and I found Roche's descriptions of life's sticky, drippy, disgusting bodies impressive.

I'm not sure I grasp all of the metaphors in the piece, but many are on the tip of my brain. As with the story our lives begin and end in a hospital -- and a large chunk of time is spent dealing with our bodies . . . and hiding our secretions from others.

It's strange now to consider other fiction that seems to forget that its characters have bodies at all.

A very interesting book, that will make you smile at how much we hide from others . . . and how much pain their can be in life . . . and how gross we all are!

A fun romp through the streets of Philadelphia

I must be honest-- I know the author. That being said, like the main character Ellie, if I didn't have something nice to say, I wouldn't say it at all. Halpern does a wonderful job capturing the spirit of a different generation, and through this sweet story shows that perhaps they aren't so different at all. It is hard not to fall in love with Ellie Jerome and root for her during her adventure. While not quite as laugh-out-loud funny as some of her earlier work, this one has a well-developed plot and well-described characters that practically jump off the page. Having grown up in Philly with the author, I appreciated the many mentions of establishments past and present. But even without that extra layer for most readers, this is a great story that sands on its own. Buy it!!!

Delightful

This is a fantastic book. I laughed at every paragraph for the first couple of hours. I have recommended it to every

female I know and especially those approaching the "wiser" years. A real winner!!!

What if....

Which of us hasn't wished, at one time or another, that we could go back in time to a younger, firmer body and start over - of course knowing what we do now? Well, this is a slight twist on that scenario. Ellie Jerome doesn't go back in time but for one day she gets to be 29 years old in today's world.

I loved this story and its characters. It is a light, refreshing, quick read but actually has a lot of to say - about aging and the way we handle it; choices and decision making; how we treat those that we love; and the things that we consider important in our lives.

I wish I could be 29 for one day....hmmmmm!

Beautiful message, really hit home for me.

This could have been my life in a lot of ways. I'm glad to have read this in my thirties because it really opened my eyes to how love and life work. Just because things aren't perfect doesn't make them wrong. We should all remember that. Really good plot, loved the characters and like I said above I loved the message. Thank you for the great read.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

It was a change from my normal books I tend to get. The storyline kept me captivated until the end.

A Good, Surprisingly Suspenseful Story!

Think 1992, Lima Peru. An era of widespread criminal activity featuring kidnappings for ransom. Two women in Andres' life have been kidnapped (at different times) and this story reveals human shortfalls and strengths in a spectacular way. What will he part with to get his wife back from her kidnappers? What will he do to help a childhood friend recover from the horrors of her kidnapping? What will his wife do with her life when she returns? Good story. Great suspense all the way.

The central characters in the story are minimal and though they could have been developed more, what we find out about them as the story unfolds turns out to be adequate.

I have only one minor criticism. The book is read in third person. Every time a character speaks, it is followed by "she said" or "Andres said." The narrator could have/should have used better character voices and avoided that redundancy. It got tiresome, for sure!

A true-to-form second installment

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed how Jesse and Macklin are each trying to overcome fears regarding commitment in different ways, and each have to find their own answers.

What does William James bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

The accents of the characters. Usually when I read a book where the characters speak in a foreign accent, their voices default to American in my head. James definitely gets the Aussie accent right. I really hope James narrates the rest of the series, because it's one I'd like to own.

Nice 3rd instalment.

A great follow up on the first two books. The story of Macklin and Caine continue with the addition of Chris and Jesse.

I'm enjoying the Lang Downs series and will probably buy the next book soon.

Enjoying this series

The best thing about this book, aside from the narrator, it the continuation of Caine and Macklin's story from book one. Although Chris and Jesse's story is sweet and worth a listen, I really enjoyed seeing the MC from Book 1 continue their journey. I'd even say it is as prevalent as the MC in this book. Again the narrator does a great job. Worth a credit. But now I have to switch to the written book as Books 3 & 4 are not on Audible yet.

A drifter a homeless boy and a sheep station

This is book 2 in a series and I suggest you read or listen to book one first since at least half or more takes up Maclin and Cain"s story and they are prominent characters.

Maclin and Cain are out hiring the new Jackaroos for the summer. While eating a young man runs in crying for help that his brother is being beaten. Maclin and some of the Jackaroos go out and help. Chris is badly beaten with a broken arm and some cracked ribs. Homeless and with a young brother to raise, Cain takes them in and offers them work.

Jesse a new Jackaroo that works summers on stations then moves on is taken by Chris and figures that both of them being gay they can have a friend's with benefits thing while he is there.

Good Story, bad experience.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator makes this book 'hard to listen to'. It sounds as if she is running the Boston Marathon while she narrates. She takes a breath two or three times in a sentence, adding commas and periods to the manuscript that surely are not there. And when is the last time you knew an adult to pronounce Library as "Lie Berry". It ruined the whole book for me and the story actually seems interesting. I just can't get through the reading.

What did you like best about this story?

The story line is good; the characters are interesting. It sounds as if the writing is done well too, if you can get past the narration.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Emma Galvin?

Someone like C.J. Critt may bring it to life.

Was Magic and the Modern Girl worth the listening time?

Unfortunately I have tried twice to listen and the narration is so distracting I keep switching off to books I've heard many times for peace of mind.

Decent story. Love the characters. Poor narration

Narrator pauses and breaks phrases and sentences in weird places in storytelling. Can be distracting. Not a smooth reader. Bizarre.

Good continuation of the story. Narration was terrible. Simply painful to listen to the whole book.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Emma Galvin?

Probably I could have picked someone off of the street to read it to me and would have had a better chance of getting a good narration.I really hate to be so harsh but the narrator's voice and cadence of reading was so irritating. I did not want to finish after the first few sentences but did not want to lose the money I had paid for the book so I finished it. She mispronounced some words, paused continuously where no pause should have been (between sentence phrases), put inflection on words that did not need emphasis and did not put any emphasis on others that needed it. Her voice and manner of speech sounded like a hyped up teenager who was always just on the edge of yelling. I kept thinking the voice and pattern of speech reminded me of someone and finally remembered - she sounded like Rocky on the original Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons. Probably have only heard one worse narrator through Audible books. I should have listened to a sample of the book first - have learned my lesson!

Yes but was so hard to finish due to the terrible narration.
