The further adventures of Emma McChesney and son
After ten years on the road as the Midwestern sales representative for T.A. Buckâs Featherloom skirts and petticoats the savvy, stylish, tell-it-like-it-is Emma McChesney now shares a New York City apartment with her plucky 21-year-old son Jock. She shares this story with him too--Emmaâs busy being T. A. Buck, Jr.âs business partner and Jockâs trying to break into 1914âs version of Mad Men by getting a job in the up and coming business of advertising.
Jock is as high-spirited as his mother and feels ready to take on the world, but heâs still got a lot to learn. Emmaâs having some trouble adjusting to Jockâs growing independence, but T. A. Buck, Jr. would love to distract Emma from her looming empty nest by having more than a business relationship.
Personality Plus is Edna Ferberâs second of three books about the jaunty, irresistible, early career woman Emma McChesney. Ferber wrote all three long enough ago that theyâre in the public domain so ebook versions can be downloaded from sites like Project Gutenberg and here on Amazon. I also listened to a wonderfully narrated audio version available on the Libravox website that made me not mind being stuck in traffic--I had witty Emma to keep me company.
    Strong woman character
I like old books, this one. Strong woman character makes this book unusual. It was very good reading. Though I've only read one other book by edna Gerber I would recommend her books
Middle book of the Emma McChesney series
    Another wonderful book from Ferber.
This one is more about Jock McChesney starting out in advertising but like the others, there's Emma (off the road now to help run the company), TA Buck, and characters at Jock's new firm -Grace a copywriter and several other fun characters all talking slang and trying to sell - sell advertising, sell petticoats - sell. And ethical questions that prove business may not have changed as much as we think.
There's some fun stuff here for women - especially when Emma threatens to marry a bellboy just to punish Jock for being condescending and again the feeling of both a new industry (advertising) and the problems of an old industry (petticoat manufacturing).
I wouldn't read this one first, but as part of the series it's good.

Alice Quentin returns to tackle a series of murders in the Square Mile in the thrilling sequel to Crossbones Yard.
The first death looked like a suicide. But someone had tucked a picture of an angel and a handful of white feathers into the banker's pocket - before pushing him in front of a Tube. A killer is stalking the Square Mile, an avenging angel intent on punishment. But why these victims? What were their sins?

Narrator wrong for the main character
I read the first book in the series and thought it was just okay, but I decided I would try the second. The narrator is very good with different accents but her own sophisticated, mature voice lacked emotion and is totally wrong for the main character who is a 5' petite blonde. It really disracted me from the story.
    Too much happens to Alice
I couldn't buy the coincidences that thrust Alice into the center of everything once again. This is my last Kate Rhodes. Great narration, although it couldn't lessen my disappointment.
    An excellent book
An excellent story written by an excellent writer. I am usually very good and guessing the plot early in the story but not with her. It's near the end. Second book of hers I am now going to look for others written by her
    terrible
I'm sorry Ladies, but this is your second book and it is as bad the first. Neither part (writing or narrating) stands on their own, and together this becomes cringeworthy. Either stepping upwould have made for an interesting story. I have never left a bad review before, but this series demands such.

    Title: Fall from Grace
Subtitle: An Inspector McLevy Mystery 2
    Author: David Ashton
    Narrator: David Ashton
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-12-16
    Publisher: Two Roads
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 18 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
    London had Sherlock Holmes.
The dark alleys of Edinburgh had Inspector McLevy.
Known as the father of forensics and a likely influence on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, real-life police inspector James McLevy is here reinvented by David Ashton in a thrilling mystery - the second in a series - set in dark, violent Victorian Edinburgh.
A burglary and murder at the home of Sir Thomas Bouch, the enigmatic architect of the ill-fated Tay Bridge, sets Inspector James McLevy off on a train of brutal killings, lethal liaisons, and double suicide which leads to a violent encounter with an old enemy, Hercules Dunbar.
Caught up in a terrifying storm as he tracks his foe to Dundee, McLevy watches the rail bridge collapse and plunge into the icy depths of the Tay. The aftermath brings the destruction of reputation and love as the inspector uncovers the secret passions which have led to murder.
    Critic Reviews:
"David Ashton impeccably evokes Edinburgh." (Financial Times)
    "Elegant and convincing." (The Times)
"Ashton is the direct heir to Robert Louis Stevenson." (Brian Cox)
    "Excellent." (The Sherlock Holmes Society)
    "A real page-turner." (Sunday Post)
"Dripping with melodrama and derring-do." (Herald)
    Members Reviews:
A solid addition to McLevy series
Now that I'm familiar with the author/narrator's breathy style and heavy Scottish accent (having read the first mystery) I fully enjoyed this one. The returning characters are continuing to develop and McLevy himself may be feeling the pangs of love. Who could imagine it! The author/narrator brings the period and characters to life with his vivid portrayal of late 19th century Scotland.
Might be a good story, but narrator drove me crazy
What would have made Fall from Grace better?
Different narrator or some coaching on his narration. VERY slow pace was first problem. But when I tried using 1.25, that worked until he hit the first female voice, who for some reason spoke much more quickly. Ugh. Sound is crisp, which I usually like, but I could hear every movement of saliva in this guy's evidently very wet mouth. Frustrating, b/c I usually love narrators from England, Scotland, and Ireland, but this was toooo annoying. Ended up returning it.
Mr Ashton don't narrate your own books please!!!!
I really do like this book.
But I keep going back because the narrator is so distracting to the point that it's frustrating and irritating.
The inspector is a layered character and book by book you're beginning to understand him. I like him. He is not Sherlock, no where near him but with time he will develop his own detecting style.
I have with reservation pre ordered the next book in the series but I hope Mr Ashton takes on board what I have written. Please get someone else to narrate it.

Life Carries On - Stories of Love
What did you love best about Ashes of Life?
My favorite was Maddie's side of the story, her struggles with grief and navigating a teenage life in general. Another thing I loved was the writing style. The book was well written, uncluttered, enjoyable and easy to follow.
Would you recommend Ashes of Life to your friends? Why or why not?
Definitely yes, to anyone who is a romantic at heart and enjoys romance novels. That would be because to me it's a book of love stories more than anything else.
What does Laurel Schroeder bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Laurel instilled life and uniqueness into each of the characters, making the story come alive. The speed and tone of narration were just right and kept my attention.
Who was the most memorable character of Ashes of Life and why?
The most memorable character was Maddie - one of the two main characters and narrators of the story. Maddie is a teenager who has just suffered a great loss and needs to find a way to deal with the grief, as well as all the changes that the loss has caused. On top of everything she needs to go back to dealing with the tribulations of regular life. I found it impossible to stay indifferent to her suffering even when she was making mistakes. The other character I liked a lot was Alex's best friend Natalie who was warm, quirky and funny.
    Any additional comments?
As a romance novel, this book was really good and had everything it needed in just the right amounts.
As a story of grief, however, I found it lacking in depth and seriousness. The story moved too fast, especially for Alex. It felt like she was not allowed enough time to grieve and deal with her losses. She was pushed and hurried both from the outside by the authors and from within the novel by certain characters.

    Publisher's Summary:
Starting over is never easy. Addie and Graham "Gray" Grayson should know: they are a couple on the brink. But they weren't always. Childhood friends who fell in love, they complemented each other perfectly: her sunny, gregarious outlook was an ideal foil for Gray's quiet, careful personality. But when an unexpected heartbreak sweeps them into grief, they're forced to question the fraying bonds that once held them so tightly.
Just before Addie walks away for good, Gray's life is suddenly left hanging in the balance - and Addie's waiting for news at the hospital. But she's not alone. Through the stories other families share, she remembers what first brought her and Gray together and realizes how much of their connection still remains. Can letting go of the past also mean embracing the future? Perhaps the words they once said to each other can become a bridge that leads them back to love, to hope, and to a second chance that could last a lifetime.

    These Three Words
What can I say about this book that is positive? Nothing. I do not want to encourage a time-limited reader (or any reader) to purchase "These Three Words".
Good grown-up story. Narrator gets boring fast.
Is there anything you would change about this book?
    Narrator
    Too much first person "I"
Would you be willing to try another book from Holly Jacobs? Why or why not?
Yes, I read this one because of others.
Would you be willing to try another one of Michelle Bombes performances?
Preferably not. Attempted to pace the seriousness and insights, but it just got boring and still stayed monotone.
    Heart warming
It really is a wonderful story! It made me sad and cry in a few places but the ending was wonderful! It was very well-written, and makes you appreciate what you have!

    excellent narrator
Good story well told. Harrowing and reply sad. Emotive unique. Wonderful to be immersed in the lives of a family in Nigeria even though the sadness so hard to bear.
    Very slow
A very sad story but I couldn't engage with the characters. It is a snapshot of how superstition or belief in second sight can drive events but the story took a very slow route. Nothing like Achebe's Things fall apart.
The dangers of self-fulfilling prophecy lyrically told
This is a beautifully written book that is deep and meaningful, with a story that gripped me. Every time I had to put it down I desperately wanted to know what would happen next and continued to think about, and worry about, the characters.
I also really enjoyed the reading given here. I'm new to audiobooks and thought this narration was perfect, just what I'm looking for from this medium.
A story of Nigerian country folk.
I found the expert narration gave me an emotional experience of the life in Nigeria and and an understanding of the hopes and fears of the family. The boys were so loyal and affectionate that I felt I could forgive them for their misguided retribution for the hurt suffered by their brothers. Any parent will identify with the aspirations of these parents and their tragic suffering.
    Tragic and sensitive
Highly recommended story of 4 brothers in Shakespearean style tragedy set in Nigeria. great performance.

    Love the narrarion
amazing set of books. I thoroughly enjoyed all of them and I love Hillary huberts voice. Perfect match! Purchase immediately.
    A Disappointing Conclusion
I guess if you're writing about women and their emergence from their class, it has to be a tragedy. What's the point of fiction if it replicates fact?
    It feels like goodbye ...
End of the saga. This story was more meandering and perhaps it's due to correlations between what it speaks off and myself ... feels resolved without any clear statement of resolution.
    Wonderful read
Loved this thoughtful expose on life. Excellent narration brought it to life. A wonderful read.
    Devastated it's over!
Just completed the last of these novels - so sad I've finished. A truly wonderful journey. I personally thought the narrator did an amazing job. These will be a hard act to follow. Intelligent, insightful, historically interesting period - I loved learning more about Italy and Naples especially.

They found paradise.... What would they do to keep it?
In the tradition of Alex Garland's The Beach, a spine-tingling adventure novel about a group of friends whose journey around the world on a yacht turns from a trip to paradise into a chilling nightmare when one of them disappears at sea. Lana and her best friend, Kitty, leave home looking for freedom - and that's exactly what they find when they are invited onto The Blue, a 50-foot yacht making its way from the Philippines to New Zealand. Manned by a young crew of wanderers, The Blue is exactly the escape they are looking for, and the two quickly fall under its spell, spending their days exploring remote islands and their rum-filled nights relaxing on deck beneath the stars. Yet paradise found can just as quickly become lost. Lana and Kitty begin to discover that they aren't the only ones with secrets they'd rather run from than reveal. And when one of their new friends disappears overboard after an argument with the other crew members, the dark secrets that brought each of them aboard start to unravel. Haunting and infused with spectacular detail, the latest novel by Lucy Clarke - whose writing has been hailed as "breathtaking" (Kirkus Reviews) and "exciting and mysterious" (Library Journal) - is a pause-resisting thriller filled with adventure, exotic locales, and high stakes.

    Great 'Till the Last Page!
Where does The Blue rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Very very high! Scarlett Mack's voice washes over you as beautifully as the water that The Blue sail's across. The characters are tangible. The story is revealed through "THEN" and "NOW" sequences...and you don't have the "whole" picture until the very end!!
Who was the most memorable character of The Blue and why?
Oh if I told you that, it might give away something you shouldn't know until the very end!
    Any additional comments?
I can ALMOST GUARANTEE that you will NOT guess the ending!! And that is why it was so much fun!!
    best narrator ever
Would you listen to The Blue again? Why?
i don't like to listen to anything twice
Who was your favorite character and why?
    lana - the main character.
What does Scarlett Mack bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
oh my goodness - all the dialects. she is amazing.
If you could take any character from The Blue out to dinner, who would it be and why?
denny. because he is complicated, sweet and loving
    Paradise lost
We all, I think, have dreamed of an escape to a magical world where the burdens and regrets of our lives can be left behind. Such is the case for these characters who find themselves aboard a sailboat in the South Pacific.
Lushly evocative of the place, we are drawn into their world, with all its beauty and wonder and freedom. But this is the world still inhabited by humans with all their baggage and subject to all their frailties. And so the tensions build.
In a narrative which alternates between present and past, we know very well from the beginning that something has gone very wrong. What that is, how that has happened and why, are the substance of this novel. Very well done, building tension, questions and then more questions, as the story proceeds. There are no clear heroes, there are no clear villains. Just life and just like in real life. Well done narration.
