    An Amazing Tear-Jerking Read
I have been a fan of Sharon Sala for some time now and love all the books I have read from her including this one. There are two important things to be aware of before purchasing this book though. First, this is NOT a romance. There is not even a hint of it so if that is what you are looking for, I suggest you check out Sharon Sala's other works because her romances are incredible as well. Second thing is this book covers the topic of child molestation. There are no explicit details though, just hints of it so make sure this is something you are ok with reading about. Oh, and be sure to have tissues on standby because you will definitely be needing them!
    Now onto my thoughts...
Ellie Wayne is such an amazing character. Reading through her pains and troubles was heart-wrenching and I couldn't help but cry for her throughout the story. However, even though Ellie has been through things no person, let alone a child, should go through, it was also so heartwarming to see her overcome her past. This story takes you on a roller coaster of emotions from anger to sadness to confusion to happiness. All I can say is Sharon Sala has done it again. This story will stay in my mind and my heart.
    One last note...
I won't spoil it, but there is a major twist in this story that I NEVER saw coming. It made me want to read this story all over again the second I finished it. Thank you Sharon Sala! Looking forward to reading many more from you!
Definitely a must read with remarkable twist
Regarding the title of this review, "remarkable" really doesn't begin to describe the twist in this book...I'm a huge fan of Sharon Sala's romantic suspense books (including those under the name Dinah McCall) so when I heard she was writing a contemporary non-romance, I was intrigued and supportive so I pre-ordered the book for my Kindle. Wow. This book drew me in just as her other books have by weaving scenes and dialogs together in a way that I have to read the book in one sitting because no way am I putting it down. Again, I'm a huge fan of romantic suspense and mysteries, but I did NOT see the twist in this book coming. Thinking back, there were signs, but you are so caught up in the moment of the story that it is all the more shocking.
She's covered child abuse in some of her previous books so that was nothing new but don't think this is anywhere near the same. Ms.

    Publisher's Summary:
Hilarious and heartwarming, an East-meets-West novel for fans of The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul.
Every woman has a secret life....
When Nikki takes a creative writing job at her local temple, with visions of emancipating the women of the community she left behind as a self-important teenager, she's shocked to discover a group of barely literate women who have no interest in her ideals.
Yet to her surprise, the white dupatta of the widow hides more than just their modesty - these are women who have spent their lives in the shadows of fathers, brothers and husbands, being dutiful, raising children and going to temple, but whose inner lives are as rich and fruitful as their untold stories. But as they begin to open up to each other about womanhood, sexuality and the dark secrets within the community, Nikki realises that the illicit nature of the class may place them all in danger.
East meets West and tradition clashes with modernity in a thought-provoking cross-cultural novel that might make you look again at the women in your life.
    Critic Reviews:
"Big-hearted, earthy and funny: turns so many preconceptions upside down and opens up a world that so many of us have only glimpsed. A rattlingly good story." (Deborah Moggach, author of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel)
"Compulsive, funny and wonderfully original - this novel glows with witty sensuality. I love it." (Helen Lederer, author of Losing It)
"Poignant, intelligent yet wickedly funny - a delightful read that reignites one's belief in the power of sisterhood." (June Sarpong)

    Great Discovery
I bought this book on the title. It started off like a YA novel that was well written and well read but it soon became a fascinating journey into a complex world.
It deals with the lives of people in an alien environment who live within a introverted self protecting society.
Its characters are likeable and sympathetic and strong without being unrealistically aggressive
The story is compelling enough to keep you wanting more.
The reading is really good. The readers light tone only draws attention to the issues that are drawn out.
Altogether excellent entertainment though an interesting landsacpe
    Laugh out loud funny
I absolutely loved this audiobook. It was a perfect combination of storyteller and narrator. Even though there were some serious subjects, the book was upbeat and enjoyable. It really was laugh out loud funny. A rare gem!
    Enjoyable story with some depth
Lovely book with a bit of everything. I liked the cross culture storyline. The main characters seemed real and sympathetic.
The story is a bit suprising and not to predictable. Light enough and real enough.
The erotic stories were suprisingly poetic and well read. A real achievement.
There is real heartfelt drama and also fear. Many funny "parts" and real human dilemma's. I fully recommend this book.
    brilliant performance
Meera Syal's performance brings this book and it's characters to life. Fans of Alexander McCall Smith should give this book a try.
    unnecessary details. too long.
struggled to finish. Idea and concept was good though. but could have been better in editing department. unnecessary details tends to lose objectivity of the story

    Damn Fine
Damn Fine Audio book, Bring on the Final Dossier! I can't fucking wait for it!
Absolutely a wonderful read for a Twin Peaks fan.
Definitely for the Twin Peaks fan. If you're watching the revival series, this is a MUST read. You'll not be disappointed.
    Aweful sound quality
What would have made The Secret History of Twin Peaks better?
Which such a great cast, you'd expect a better quality. at 64kpbs/22.050kHz, this make the audiobook sounding out from a poor radio broadcast
This Audio Book is not what it appears
In the words of Dale Cooper: I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, two cups of good, hot black coffee, or a delightful audio book that will further enrich the world of Twin Peaks for you.
    An unexpected journey
25 years after the show ended, I had some certain expectations of what this book might be. I was way off. What's here is so unexpected, it took me several tries to approach it and settle into the story that it wanted to tell, not the story I wanted to hear. Once it clicked I was all in. Mark Frost's deft interweaving of apocryphal American history, of a surprisingly broad scope, is used to deepen and enlarge the uncanny cosmology of Twin Peaks. Now that the new series is underway, overlooked clues buried in this book are beginning to surface.
Well worth your time if you enjoy a mystery that won't give itself up without a fight.

    Publisher's Summary:
Contemplating suicide after nearly a decade at war, Levi sits down to write a note to his best friend Nick, explaining why things have to come to this inevitable end. Years earlier, Levi - a sergeant in the army - made a tragic choice that led his team into ambush, leaving three soldiers dead and two badly injured. During the attack, Levi risked death to save a badly burned and disfigured Nick. His actions won him the Silver Star for gallantry, but nothing could alleviate the guilt he carried after that fateful day. He may have saved Nick in Iraq, but when Levi returns home and spirals out of control, it is Nick's turn to play the savior, urging Levi to write. Levi begins to type as a way of bidding farewell, but what remains when he is finished is not a suicide note. It's a love song, a novel in which the beginning is the story's end, the story's end is the real beginning of Levi's life, and the future is as mutable as words on a page.

    Hard and Heavy Questions
Sometimes, as a kid, I asked my dad for advice. Should I pick path A or B?
He usually said this cryptic line: âLife is full of choices.â
I used to think, What the hell does that mean? Thanks a lot, old man.
Now I realize it was a gift. He forced me to focus on the question, not the answer. A Hard and Heavy Thing by Matthew J. Hefti is like that. His book raises tough questions from the point of view of the three main characters: Levi, Nick, and Eris. Once you understand how the narration jumps back and forth in time, all you care about is the three characters. You feel the difficulty these young people have reintegrating into ânormal lifeâ after their turn at the Forever Wars.
Two parts of the book struck me. The book hinges on a combat scenario that involves Levi and Nick. Levi reaches a certain mental state after that fight:
He slept little and ate less, but he soldiered on. In the meantime, he allowed himself no respite from the work of keeping his squad alive. No longer did he think of himself. No longer did he allow his ego or romanticism or grand ideas to keep him from performing in the way he knew he should. He stopped thinking about the merits of the war. If war was bad, it didnât change his mission to keep his brothers alive. If war was good, it was only because it taught you how to survive; it taught you how to endure; it taught you how to wait; it taught you how to abide.
Later in the book, Nick, drunk and frustrated with his friend yells this at Levi:
You canât change anything, Levi. I canât change anything. The past is done. Itâs over.
I read Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes last year. Like its namesake mountain, itâs a towering novel that takes place in Vietnam. The two passages with Levi and Nick are about how the character deals with the horror of their circumstances and the merciless way that the arrow of time only goes in one direction. Heftiâs characters reminded me of one paragraph that Marlantes wrote in Matterhorn when the protagonist Mellas deals with the same topics:
He hid behind a blasted stump and he tried to think about meaning. He knew that there could be no meaning to someone who was dead. Meaning came out of living. Meaning could come only from his choices and actions. Meaning was made, not discovered. He saw that he alone could make Hawkeâs death meaningful by choosing what Hawk had chosen, the company.
