    Título: Tres Tristes Tigres
    Autor: Guillermo Cabrera Infante
    Narrador: Enrico Mario Santi
    Formato: Unabridged
Duración: 17 hrs and 1 min
    Idioma: Español
    Fecha de publicación: 06-20-17
    Editor: Audible Studios
Probably THE most important exponent of contemporary cuban literature
Cabrera Infante is probably the most forgotten literary member of the latinamericanliterary "Boom". This book is a recreation of Havana's night life (pre-cuban revolutionary success) and it is full with cuban words and sayings which makes it a rich read. This is a must-read for any one studying in depth the Latinamerican Literary Boom, Cuban literature and idendity, or latinamerican literature in general.
    Great Book!
It's the type of book you have to devote your entire time to I'm order to fully understand it, but overall, great book.
    Five Stars
    Incredibly tiresome read........
Bought this book believing it to be the basis for "the Lost City" screenplay.Hardly anything in common from the book to the movie. If you want to read the drunk mumblings of 3 lost souls for way too many pages go ahead. Its in my trash pile, and if this is as advertised a great example of great contemporary Cuban literature then its proof that the Castro brothers have truly destroyed the very fabric of Cuba.
Its a tiring a read in Spanish as in English, really doesn't even rate 1 star but that is as low as the system allows.

    Publisher's Summary:
Revenge, redemption...and pastry. The witty new novel from the author of Hotel du Barry.
In the winter of 1912 on the wild West Coast of Tasmania, Wolfftown's most notorious heiress and murderess, Sasha Torte, tells the tale of her own spectacular downfall.
Forsaken by her parents and raised by criminals and reprobates, Sasha becomes a world-famous pastry chef at the tender age of 17. Entanglement with the disreputable Dasher brothers leads to love, but also to a dangerous addiction.
Behind bars in Wolfftown's jail, Sasha sips premium champagne as she recalls a life of seduction, betrayal, ghosts, opium and an indiscreet quantity of confectionary - and plots her escape.
The Scandalous Life of Sasha Torte is a wild romp of dastardly deeds, intrepid protagonists, dark villains, wild gangs, luxurious hotels...and mouth-watering treats.
    Critic Reviews:
"Pure escapism. The author presents us with immoderation in excess, unrestrained melodrama and Charles Daniel O'Rourke, patissier par excellence. A rip-roaring, imaginative and exhilarating tale." (Good Reading)

Rollicking and quirky Aussie historical adventure
During the nineties, I used to watch a TV cartoon called 'Horrible Histories', which was a satirical look at world events for kids. This novel is a little like an adult version of the program for romance readers. It's full of risque innuendo, but we're warned about this from the outset if we want to cut and run. The story takes place in Tasmania in 1912, when the 22-year-old heroine begins her memoir which sets out to explain why she's been wrongfully imprisoned on a murder charge in the old town gaol.
The rollicking story takes place in flashbacks, which brings us to Sasha's present, including how she happened to become a world class patissiere. With a play on words name like Sasha Torte, we can predict it's bound to be light-hearted on the whole, but Sasha doesn't gloss over her darker times. In her family background alone, there's a history of bipolar disorder in the women of her mother's side. Of course they never called it that back then, but although it wasn't a recognised condition, they still had to deal with the huge swings between euphoria and crashing depression.
To compress so many genre elements within the one story, it has to be fast moving. There are good guys and bad guys, all larger than life. There's mystery and romance, adventure and history, and even bits of natural history. The quiet appearance of a strange creature which turns out to be a Tasmanian Tiger is up there among my favourite moments.
On the whole, it got a bit too cute and quirky for me at times, yet I found myself wondering if it was just the sassy writing style that I found a bit much in such a big dose. I'd be interested to see how I'd compare the two mediums if I were to see the same story on the screen.
Thanks to Harper Collins Australia and Net Galley for my review copy.
I liked the style of this book
I liked the style of this book, well written and great characters. It was easy to read and jamb packed with high adventure. This has everything in it, even a Tasmanian tiger.
Set in Tasmania in 1912 Sasha Torte left by her parents, is brought up by her well to do Grandfather.
The book starts with Sasha incarcerated in the wolf town gaol for murder.

    Publisher's Summary:
Young lovers Héctor and Lilia dreamed of a brighter future for their family in the United States. Héctor left Mexico first to secure work and housing. But when Lilia crossed the border with their infant daughter, Alejandra, mother and child were separated, and Alejandra disappeared. Now, four years later, back in their sleepy hometown of Oaxaca, the couple enjoys a semblance of normal life, with a toddler son and another baby on the way. Then they receive an unexpected tip that might lead them to Alejandra, and both agree they must seize this chance, whatever the cost.
Working increasingly illegal jobs to earn money for his journey north, Héctor seeks more information about his long-absent daughter. Meanwhile, a bedridden Lilia awaits the birth of their third child but cannot keep herself from reliving the worst mistakes of her past.
In luminous, compassionate prose, Michel Stone drops listeners into the whirlwind of the contemporary immigrant experience, where a marriage is strained to the breaking point by the consequences of wanting more for the next generation.

beautiful written. I cried and rejoiced in several places ...
Oh my what a powerful book, beautiful written. I cried and rejoiced in several places along the way. Michel Stone you wrote on a powerful subject. I read the Iguanna Tree first, could not put it down, again cried, its tears at your heart. My mother came to this country from Scotland when she was 3 years old. I heard wonderful stories some sad, mostly happy. They traveled the only way they could afford in steerage. My mother went on to become an RN and my uncle fought in WW II. Never to return home.
    You gotta read this one!
The plot of this wonderful narrative is carried through the characters. Each character's thoughts and actions deepen the meaning and beg the reader to ponder the significant from the insignificant. In the end, there is nothing insignificant. A first reading will allow the reader to hear the story; an additional reading will open new vistas for understanding, if not explaining.
The book was part of a theology class I teach in a seminary setting. It provided an opportunity to think about and talk about immigration issues from within the story line itself but also created space for theological reflection. This book is impressive because it opens itself for multiple readings and deepening conversations.
    Another beautiful story
I will recommend this book to many! The author could work a little more humor into the characters. I was eager to find time to read but also knew this author does not write a lengthy story, so limited my time to a chapter a day.
    Beautiful
This book is rich in words, love, and life lessons! The ending was not âhappyâ but it was full of love-love that only parents can have for their children.
    Five Stars
An amazing sequel to The Iguana Tree! Couldn't put it down.

Dorothy meets a handsome young man with an eye for her inheritance while she is in her sophomore year. They are to be married, and her life will be blissful; but Dorothy is pregnant, and her fiancé's plans are ruined, for Dorothy would be disinherited if her father discovered the truth.
So the young man provides his bride-to-be with some pills that will solve the problem. Soon there will be no baby - and perhaps no Dorothy either....
A Kiss Before Dying, Levin's first novel, earned him the 1954 Edgar Award for Best First Novel and is regarded as a modern classic.
    Members Reviews:
An amazing novel for a seasoned veteran, never mind a 24-year-old.
If this book isn't a perfect thriller, it comes close. I picked it up last month when it was a Monthly Deal and was blown away when I read it. And thrillers aren't even my favorite genre.
Levin was a successful writer by anyone's standards. ROSEMARY'S BABY, STEPFORD WIVES, AND BOYS FROM BRAZIL were all best-sellers made into hit movies. Most of his hits were written in the 1960's and 70's, when he was in his 30's and 40's.
KISS is his first novel and he wrote it in 1953, when he was only 24 years old. It won an Edgar for Best First Novel and I see why. It's a brilliantly executed thriller. But what I find amazing is not the quality of his writing, but that a very young man from a sheltered background could have conceived of Bud Corliss, one of the most memorable characters ever.
He traces Corliss's life as the only child in a working-class family in New England. The son of warring parents, his childhood is a deadly combination of over-indulgence and cold rejection. Did that create this charming, manipulative man who "like an animal, watches people to find out what they reward him for or punish" ? What part did the war play in his personality? Did combat teach him that killing is an easy and effective way to get what you want? Would he have figured it out anyway?
Willie Sutton robbed banks "because that's where the money is." But when you're young and handsome and personable, the money is frequently found in the prospects of young, gullible women with rich parents. "There's no law against going after a rich girl, is there?" Corliss asks innocently. I hope not, because he's after several of them and if one plan doesn't work he ends the "romance" decisively and moves on
This book keeps the reader off balance. Mercurial, manipulative people do that to you. As a chameleon changes color, some people change names, addresses, jobs, and even personalities as it suits them. We like to think we're shrewd enough not to be conned, but are we? While we're wondering what conditions create a monster, we also have to wonder what conditions create a victim. Innocence? Arrogance? Neediness?
Levin did have experience that helped him frame his plot. Like Corliss, he was an Easterner who attended a mid-western college. "Stoddard University" in Iowa is based on the Des Moines, Iowa campus of Drake University where Levin spent two years. It's a wonderfully realistic look at college life in the 1950's - placid and innocent on the surface, but with the emotional drama that goes with being young in any time, in any culture.

Please note: This audiobook is in Spanish.
What did you love best about El monarca de las sombras [The Monarch of the Shadows]?
What about Raúl Llorens and Javier Cercas s performance did you like?
very good, but not his best
I love the way cercas writes simple books. My Spanish is not perfect, but with him I hardly have to concentrate. he doesn't use the poetic language many Spanish writers do. I also like his topics (Spanish civil war) and the 'non fiction novel' style.
the only reason I would not give this book five stars is because it is a bit too much about Javier Cercas trying to write this novel than the novel itself.

    Publisher's Summary:
A literary sensation on its original publication in Hungary, this hypnotic, hauntingly beautiful first novel from acclaimed award-winning poet and author Szilárd Borbély depicts the poverty and cruelty experienced by a partly Jewish family in a rural village in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
In a tiny village in Northeast Hungary, close to the Romanian border, a young unnamed boy warily observes day-to-day life and chronicles his family's struggles to survive. Like most of the villagers, his family is desperately poor, but their situation is worse than most - they are ostracized because of his father's Jewish heritage and his mother's connections to the Kulaks, who once owned land and supported the fascist Horthy regime before it was toppled by Communists.
With unflinching candor, the little boy's observations are related through a variety of narrative voices - crude diatribes from his alcoholic father, evocative and lyrical tales of the past from his grandparents, and his own simple yet potent prose. Together these accounts reveal not only the history of his family but that of Hungary itself, through the physical and psychic traumas of two world wars to the country's treatment of Jews, both past and present.
Drawing heavily on Borbély's memories of his own childhood, The Dispossessed is an extraordinarily realistic novel. Raw and often brutal yet glimmering with hope, it is the crowning achievement of an uncompromising talent.
    Members Reviews:
Depressing life under communism in Hungarian village, superbly written.
This is a terribly depressing book written by a man who had a terribly depressing life and ended it by suiicide. It is about life in an isolated Hungarian village during communist rule. The level of poverty, the level of ignorance, intolerance, abuse, and the general quality of life makes this a very painful read. Yet the writing is superb but tragically so. How it might have fluorished in a more favorable environment.
Life In another Time and Place
For most of us living in America today it is very hard to imagine life in Eastern Europe, eastern Hungary in this case, 30-50 years ago. What would it have been like to have Communism thrust on you and any freedom you might have enjoyed suddenly stamped out? The author forced me to try to envision coping with problems I have never encountered in what I can see has been a much more sheltered life. The characters are well drawn and believable, and I was attracted to them, full of empathy and wonder. If you want to expand your knowledge and prospective on life in Eastern Europe when communism ruled I can thoroughly recommend this book, beautifully written.
    Five Stars
Something far beyond the average life-up-out-of poverty memoir. Incredibly powerful, unforgettable.
    Reads like a memoir
Reads like a memoir, not a novel.
Very repetitive in its abuse scenes against animals, especially cats. Got tiring. Never developed any plot or character arcs.
The translation is poor. The focus is on abject poverty and superstition ...
The translation is poor. The focus is on abject poverty and superstition in Romania/Hungary. Interesting is you are into the grit and grime of a politically and socially challenged nation. This is social injustice at its worst. Story does not flow and I am not sure what specific message the author was trying to convey. Perhaps the novel is more successful in its original language.

Gratefully he heads home with a nice English couple, who offer a box room, hot whisky and local tales. But when the man collapses en route, Shadow realises that something about this place has been left untold. Something ancient, something within the very walls of the village. Something shadowing them all.

A must listen if you like American Gods
This is an absolute must listen if you enjoyed American Gods. Niel Gaiman at his best
    Cool
If you could sum up Black Dog in three words, what would they be?
    Abridged American Gods.
What did you like best about this story?
Good to see what Shadow is getting up to these days.
Which character as performed by Neil Gaiman was your favourite?
Shadow. But Neil Gaiman reads them all very well.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    Yeah. It'll move you too.
    Any additional comments?
Nice little short story that neatly sums up the novel American Gods.
A shot size story from the world of American Gods
Passes the time nicely enough and it's great to meet shadow again. It's just that it's a little disappointing after all he's gone through in America Gods he is still a bit of a patsy. Then again isn't the mythical Thor too?
    More rambles would be welcome!
Loving Shadow in the Uk... great standalone stories exploring the weird and wonderful. Dare we hope that there's a neverwhere crossover?! Maybe if we believe enough... it will exist

    Publisher's Summary:
A woman is caught in a gripping moral dilemma that resonates far beyond her place in time and history in number one New York Times best seller Jodi Picoult's latest.
'I don't want that nurse touching my baby.' Those are the instructions from the newborn child's parents. However, when the baby goes into cardiac arrest, Ruth, a nurse of 20 years' experience, sees no option but to assist. But the baby dies. And Ruth is charged with negligent homicide.
Ruth is shattered and bewildered as she tries to come to terms with her situation. She finds different kinds of support from her sister, a fiery radical, and her teenage son, but it is to Kennedy McQuarrie, a white middle-class lawyer, to whom she entrusts her case - and her future.
As the two come to develop a truer understanding of each other's lives, they begin to doubt the beliefs they each hold most dear. For the privileged to prosper, they come to realise, others have to suffer. Racism takes many forms and is reinforced by the structures of our society.
In gripping dramas like Nineteen Minutes, My Sister's Keeper and The Pact, Jodi Picoult has explored the big issues of our time through characters whose lives resonate with us. Here we see once again her unrivalled ability to immerse us in a story whose issues will linger with us long after the story has finished.

    Wow riveting
Small great things kept me listening every moment I could I listen to many books but this title stands out above all.
Its challenging very disturbing and uplifting I highly recommend it
    Timely
Being a fan of her style of writing I may be a little biased. I enjoyed the book even though the accusation thrown against the main character was a bit far fetched and incredulous.
Putting that aside, there was a lot in this book that helped me understand the racial currents and prejudice that continues to exist in our societies. This can be easily translated to other nations with religious or racial discrimination.
I thought the female characters were engaging and their narrative was what held me in the book. The acharacter of Turk, the skinhead supremacist was a bit drawn out and did not quite ring true. I found my mind drifting away at those points. I guess, it was somehow important to show the intensity of the hate that these people can harbour for whatever reason. I still thought that it took too long to depict it in the book. The remarkable turnaround was somehow too good to be true.
Overall, quite a good read. Definitely wakes you up to full appreciation of the racial tensions and motivation behind people's actions and reactions.
    The narrators were excellent.
    WOW! A must read.
Jodie Picoult has done it again. This book is amazing, thought provoking and challenging. Recommended.
    A Wakeup Call
This was an important story well told. As an open minded person who was raised to love and respect everyone iI was surprised by my reaction to this book. We can have underlying prejudices due to ignorance of the truth. I happy to say this book made me rethink some ideas I had about what it is like to be the subject of prejudice. I know nothing but I am willing to learn.
    brilliant

Caroline Venable has everything her Southern heritage promised: money, prestige, a powerful husband - and a predictable routine of country-club luncheons, cocktail parties, and dinners hosting her husband's wealthy friends, clients, and associates in his successful land-developing conglomerate.
To escape her stifling routine, Caro drinks a little too much. But her true solace is the Lowcountry island her beloved Granddaddy left her - an oasis of breathtaking beauty that is home to a band of wild ponies. When Caro learns that her husband must develop the island or lose the business, she is devastated. The Lowcountry is her heritage - and what will happen to the ponies whose spirit and freedom have captivated her since childhood?
Saving the island could cost Caroline more than she ever imagined. To succeed, she must confront the part of herself numbed by alcohol and careful avoidance - and shatter long-held ideals about her role in society, her marriage, and, ultimately, herself.

    Superbly written and performed
So much LOVE and healing from the pit of grief in this beautiful Low Country tale. This lovely story is so well written that I feel as though I was there and could see it all in that wondrous low country light.
