Where does The Dance rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

The last audio book I have listened to was Fountainhead book on cassette, so my experience here is way out of date. The Dance is ranked the highest as it has reminded me how fun it is to have something read to me, especially a book I read and loved already.

If you could take any character from The Dance out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Jackie, mainly because I love when character flaws and difficulties are presented and then I can watch how the character navigates through them. We all love the perfect characters for their perfections. I love the characters that teach me something, or validate things I have experienced myself.

I really enjoy reading Suzie Carr books. I can sit and have a terrific story unfold in the pages in front of me, but this narrator seeps the life from this story like the color draining from a photograph.I have listen to some bad narration in my time and have been able to withstand many of bad reading, but I got as far as 51minutes and 16 seconds before I said, "No more". I did nothing to justify taking that sort of punishment. This is the second time I have listen to this narrator slowly drone on in her narration of a Susie Carr book. I refuse to do it again.

What could Suzie Carr have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Choose another narrator (and that doesn't mean she should read it herself, I've been through that hell too).

Depressing and predictable

This may be the worst book I have ever wasted my time listening too. So very predictable and depressing! Boring with absoultely no surprises.

Good book!

This book tugged at the heart strings. It took awhile to get into the book at least for me. i found the beginning to be a bit lackluster but after the first 5-7 chapters it does really start to get very good. I had trouble putting it on pause after that. i like the narration. the woman reading had a pleasant soothing voice.

Beautiful story

Beautiful story of healing heartbreak and balancing life's beauty with its pain. Well written without being trite and schmaltzy. Well performed as well (although the narrator had a habit of saying "crans" instead of "crayons" which, to me, is like saying "libary" instead of "library". A bit distracting.) Altogether a beautiful book for a long weekend at the cabin or on the beach.

Fantastic writing.

This is the first book by McInerhey that follows NYC alpha-couple Corrine and Russell. It is a technical firecracker, with dazzling edgy depictions and satire of NYC 1980s capitalist shallowness, and the very real emotional desires of humans both trapped within and promoting cutthroat cynicism and power games. The book is dominated by sexual predators and is occasionally problematic from a feminist point of view, though in McInherhey's favour he "describes cynically," and emphatically does not "justify" much of the chauvinism in this book. Perhaps the empathy his characters possess in their most difficult moments barely overcomes the machismo present in so much of the book.

If the book retained only the scandal and cynicism, the sexual machismo and predation, it would be a no-go. However, there is just enough sympathy and objectivity in the writing style to see and feel the characters, and thus to begin to like them, even. In the end this book is a page-turner, and at best it truly brings the characters and their lives from the page directly into the conscious minds of the reader.

The Beginning of McInerney's Greatness

Jay McInerney was a decent novelist before he began his Calloway trilogy, capturing some of the quirky characters of '80s Manhattan in a satisfactory way, but 'Brightness Falls' is where he really turned into a chronicler of the city's saga in the way of his idols like Fitzgerald. Falls begins the story of Russell and Corinne Calloway, a young married couple navigating life in late '80s, stock-market crazed Manhattan. Russell is a dissatisfied, idealistic book editor looking for a better future, Corrine is beautiful but full of doubts, and McInerney takes us through a ride of heartbreak and nostalgia as no other contemporary novelist has. Read this, 2006's The Good Life, and 2016's "Bright, Precious Days." You'll feel as if you've lived Russell and Corinne's lives with them, a journey well worth taking.

Great novel - right up there with Bright Lights, Big City

I really enjoyed Bright Lights, Big City - also by Jay McInerney - so I picked up this novel as well. It is fantastic - I highly recommend it. It follows the story of the Calloways who outwardly appear to be a super-successful, young NY power couple. But like many relationships, things are a little different behind closed doors. There are a handful of other characters in the novel who are interesting to follow as well. This novel is interesting to read for a peak at young, high-class life in New York City. It's also just interesting for how promising young careers and relationships can wither and tarnish over time. As in Bright Lights, McInerney has plenty of interesting observations and truths to drop on the reader.

Very much worth reading if in the 80's you were 25-35 years old

It's such a good reflection of the time and the type of people it represents.

Captivating storytelling

Tracy Barone's Happy Family has intensely real characters and they suck you in from the very start. The narration is spot on and particularly the character of Cece. The story is sad and I wished for a little more forgiveness, towards life, from the main character at times.

It s long story

Im sorry to say that although I found the story well written, it was too long and interminable for me.

Where does This Must Be the Place rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I've just started in on unabridged books, rather than dramatized performances. This is a superb audiobook. Great to have both male and female voices, especially given that the book is constructed with chapters from the points of view of many different characters. Maggie O'Farrell had been really ambitious with This Must Be the Place, but she's pulled it off and this audiobook treatment does it justice.

Fractured relationships sensitivity portrayed

This is not not a pacy, narrative-driven story, but more an exploration of human relationships. It took me a while to become engaged by the various characters whose lives are the back-bone of the novel and had to concentrate as the narrative flits back and forth in time and among the various relationships. My patience was rewarded and I started to care what happened to the characters and by the end the separate threads came together.

At times I did wonder if the digressions, in which more characters were included detracted from the central story, however I can see that they were a device for illuminating the relationships from different perspectives.

I enjoyed the book more and more as the stories unfolded and felt sorry when the book ended.

The narration by different voices certainly added to the impression that I was listening to real people relating their, at times, painful lives.

I love her books but this was a disappointment. Narration very good

I found this book a bit slow-going and couldn't really get into the characters the way I have with previous Maggie O'Farrell books. I wonder if the fact I read them and listened to this one made any difference, but I'd be surprised if it did because the narration was really good and believable.

This lovely book interspersed lyrical poetry with historical fact (and maybe fiction) so beautifully, that it read like a song

I don't know if a quick review will serve to give justice to such a deep and meaningful story. From the first few words of the first chapter, I was immediately transported to a time and place that was unknown to me. And so I found myself fully immersed in this book, captivated by the softness of the narratorâs voice, the vivid telling of life in a Sri Langkan village, the recollection of the violent kingdoms that existed before us. This lovely book interspersed lyrical poetry with historical fact (and maybe fiction) so beautifully, that it read like a song in my head.

The River of Ink is a story about love but also about courage and survival. As an ordinary poet with digressions of his own, Asanka strives to do the right thing and often fails. In his stern focus to protect Sarisi at all costs, he must contend between his conscience and his courage. He flails about his convictions, tries to please the evil king while tending to his selfish desires. But in the end, he has only himself to live with.

Novel set in Sri Lanka (a book full of mystical history)

A lovely physical book is just such a great opener to a good story! Paulâs book has a striking cover, an era-appropriate stylus (which he carefully researched for the period, see below), flowing ink, turning turquoise. The complementary colour to turquoise is the colour of blood and were they to be placed adjacent to each other, they would harmoniously balance. That is why we chose to set the book cover against a blood red (palm fringed) background, which really throws the book into sharp relief.

Blood. Already a veiled hint of what is to come in the bookâ..

Cool Military Stories

This was a cool look behind the scenes in some very crazy political and war dealings. It felt kind of like a realistic spy novel in the first story, a political thriller in the second stories, and a fun war story in the third story. In the first story there were a bunch of tense scenes that were exciting to listen to. I particularly liked the scenes that had to do with commercial airplanes. I used to work at an airport and it reminded me of being around big commercial jets.

The narrator Andrew Philip Bryan has a great voice which made for an enjoyable listen. He has a pleasant British accent. His accents for the characters from other countries could use some work though.

This book was well researched. It gave a lot of details about specific technologies and equipment used. These details added to the realism of the stories. In reading this book you get to hang out with some terrible powerful world leaders.

I enjoyed the author's note before the third story. It was cool to know he had some personal experiences that inspired the story. If you like military stories and appreciate reading books that get the technical aspects right check this one out.

Unbelievable!

Where does Putin and MH370/MH17 rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

The MH370 story ranks up there as the most plausible theory I have read on the missing Malasyian airliner. This added with the MH17 story and The Bully story ranks as one of the best audiobooks I've listened to lately.

Is this the end

I enjoyed listening right to the end! But What Kind of ending is this? I even Checked to see if I missed downloading part 2.

Disappointing!

I'm disappointed to come across such a dull and boring story line by an Indian author!!

The plot/expression is pathetic and language is beyond English...the author does not know how to use expressive language, and I question the writing flair!!!Better save your time on meaningful books than wasting it over this too mediocre melodrama! And please stay away from the audible version....the narrator is beyond sad with her absurd accent and funny expressions!!!

Very interesting story

Not my usual type of book so took a chance - have to say i was extremely pleased as it was a very well written story - a twist that i was not expecting -

The narrator perfectly captures the essence of both Renuka Sharma and of India. The narration is a perfect reflection of the gentle rhythms of the story as well as of the spirit of the main character. A delight to listen to.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The deft and gentle touch of the author makes this story come to life. I was totally absorbed not only by the storyline but by the authenticity of the characters. A quiet, gentle but deeply meaningful novel... with a few surprises that elevate it onto my "something really special" list.
