    Author: Instaread
    Narrator: Michael Gilboe
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 29 mins

    Publisher's Summary:
The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto by Mitch Albom is a novel about the fictional musician Frankie Presto and his amazing journey through music and life. Frankie's life story is told from the perspective of music, a fictional narrator. This is fitting, given that Frankie was one of the world's greatest guitarists.
The story, however, begins at its end: Frankie has died during a music festival. During a performance, his body levitates and then drops to the stage. The novel opens at Frankie's funeral, where music-industry figures - including nonfictional musicians such as Lyle Lovett and Ingrid Michaelson - have gathered to pay their respects and share their thoughts about the deceased guitarist. Music, the narrator, uses the opportunity of the funeral to reflect on Frankie's life.

    A great read!!
I really enjoyed reading this book. It kept my attention and I really enjoyed the story line.
Gives a Good Summary of The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto
I have never read any of Mitch Albom's books, but this one was brought up recently at a social event. I am a full time working mother, so I have limited reading time. When I read the description of the book and some of the other reviews, I was confused and even more unsure of whether or not I wanted to read the book. That's where the Instaread came in to play. The Instaread gave me a thorough summary and analysis without giving away major spoilers. It introduces the primary characters as well as themes of the book. I found it to be well written and interesting. I still haven't decided if I want to read the full novel yet, but I feel better prepared to make that decision now!
*I received this Instaread for free for the purpose of reading & reviewing. My thoughts & opinions are my own.
I still wasn't sure how much I enjoyed it.
If I had to describe the writing style of this book in terms of music, it would be syncopated (a little off beat and odd). The book starts out with a dead main character (Frankie) and the eulogies given by various friends telling his story. When I finished reading the book, I still wasn't sure how much I enjoyed it.
I loved it. It was well written and different
A charming story. I loved it. It was well written and different. Great read.
Another excellent Summary Book by Instareads
I love Mitch Albom and his books. This Summary and Analysis of Mitch Albom's "The Magic Strings Of Frankie Presto" by Instaread is very well written indeed. After reading a couple of other Instaread Summary books, I always make it a point to read this before actually buying the original book. Firstly, because I want to be able to decipher if the original work is worth reading (or worth giving as a gift). And then there's having limited time to get a whole book read, but still wanting to get the gist or overview of one of my favorite author's latest books.
This one has encouraged me to eventually buy the original book and give as Christmas present.
Kudos to Instareads for another well-written Summary book!
Overall an excellent purchase and I highly recommend this book.
I received this book at a discount or free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Welcome to Black Dog Bay, a tiny seaside town in Delaware known as "the best place in America to bounce back from your breakup". Home to the Better Off Bed-and-Breakfast, the Eat Your Heart Out bakery, and the Whinery bar, Black Dog Bay offers a haven for the suddenly single.
Flight attendant Summer Benson lives by two rules: Don't stay with the same man for too long, and never stay in one place. She's about to break rule number one by considering accepting her boyfriend's proposal - then disaster strikes, and her world is shattered in an instant.
Summer heads to Black Dog Bay, where the locals welcome her. Even Hattie Huntington, the town's oldest, richest, and meanest resident, likes her enough to give her a job. Then there's Dutch Jansen, the rugged, stoic mayor, who's the opposite of her type. She probably shouldn't be kissing him. She definitely shouldn't be falling in love. After a lifetime of globe-trotting, Summer has finally found a home. But Hattie has old scores to settle and a hidden agenda for her newest employee. Summer finds herself faced with an impossible choice: leave Black Dog Bay behind forever or stay with the ones she loves and cost them everything....

    Too Silly for me
My gut instinct was to give this book one star but I went with two because it certainly isn't the worst book I've ever read. I liked the beginning and found it semi-interesting although I found Summer and Kim's conversation to be a little juvenile. As the book progressed, the rough landing, Summer being in the hospital, then the breakup, her running over the rosebushes once she was in Black Dog Bay...I thought, maybe some potential. Sadly I was wrong. I enjoy a fun book but for me this one was just over the top silly, from the way Summer conducted herself to the way the townspeople pretty much had her married off to the mayor after one date - I couldn't find myself believing someone of his description would even date someone like her! It was also a little ridiculous that the town was a "recover from a breakup" town. Just all in all a little too goofy for me. If you are looking for a no-brainer silly day in the sun read and you can pick it up at half price or less, this would be a good book for that. Unfortunately I paid full price and don't feel it was worth it!
Let's all root for the victim in the breakup!
Nothing is better for a cold and dreary winter afternoon that a piece of fluff that entertains and involves the reader. This is it! Here we have a young woman from a comfortable background who needs some alone time to contemplate what is next and find a new direction as she tried to get over the handsome and romantic pilot with whom she has been involved. A popular flight attendant, she returns to Black Dog Bay in an effort to restart her life. This community caters to people who are trying to get over a bad breakup. There is a bed and breakfast where they can stay undetected, a bar where they can drink their sorrows away, a boutique to get a new wardrobe, whatever the need the town has it. The mayor of the town is a lifelong resident, single, handsome, and living totally above the drama of town. In the bar with all of the desperate women, our heroine accepts a bet that she cannot get the indifferent mayor to ask her out. She wins that bet and then some.

Trois récits, trois femmes qui disent non. Elles s'appellent Norah, Fanta, Khady Demba.

It started with that suspicious "accident" on Hellhag Hill. The police might write it off to the night fog, but Joe Grey knows a cut brake line when he sees it - he may be a cat, but he's already solved more murders than your average police detective! Then there's Clyde, Joe's erratic but loveable human. He thinks cats should stay out of police work (as if humans could handle it on their own!), and to make his point, he's locking Joe and his lady friend Dulcie out of the house when Officer Harper comes over to play poker. But Joe isn't about to give up the chase. Not until the "ghost" of Hellhag Hill is tracked down and brought to justice.

    Publisher's Summary:
A dynasty of women triumphs in the fiercely male-dominated world of high fashion amid the ruins of war. A daughter honors her mother's ultimate sacrifice - by becoming a ruthless businesswoman who will stop at nothing to raise high her family's name. Another daughter seeks to flee the toxic legacy of her family and live in peace. And both daughters have a date with destiny in a vault filled with Nazi gold...treasure that will alter the courses of both their lives....
Goodbye, Janette is a late masterpiece by Harold Robbins, America's most commercially successful and era-defining author of pulp fiction. The creator of erotic and ferocious turbocharged narratives of the soul-stricken rich and famous, Harold Robbins was in his day a close runner-up to Shakespeare and the Bible in numbers of books sold. Today his ability to create an unstoppable, mesmeric tale - someone famously said about him, "In Harold's books, the pages turn your fingers" - pushes him to the front ranks of pop novelists as new generations discover his awesome power.
Epic and intimate, moving from the icy nighttime streets of the Nazi occupation to the decadent beaches of St. Tropez, from the showrooms of Manhattan to the runways of Paris, Goodbye, Janette is a hypnotically gripping, mythic family saga of the power of blood to bind, to oppress, and finally to set free. Full of the shocking U-turns and unexpected revelations that make Harold Robbins a master storyteller, Goodbye, Janette transports the listener to a chic, dreamlike world where everyone wants an all-access pass...but the penalties for staying may be severe.

    Dry Mouth
Barbara Rosenblat's swallows can be heard throughout the reading. Although her voice is a good fit for the story, it often sounds like she needs water to eliminate the smacking.
    stupid ending
I listened to the whole thing thinking all the gratuitous sex and drug use was leading to something.... I should have known better with a Robbins book. My bad. With that said the narrator was awesome.
    Need a shower
    Any additional comments?
I had read almost all of Harold Robbins when I was a teenager, I would get them out of the trash after my mom finished. I was excited to see these books on Audible, but this one, was pure trash, I did not like any of the characters and I did not care what happened to them, I think Jeanette's mom died just to get out of the story. This story like some of the others, that Mr. Robbins had written, has no redeeming values

In a raging sandstorm, two men with their pregnant wives fatefully meet in the desert: Samir Al Fay, a Muslim doctor whose son will be named heir to the Prince of Beirut; and Isaiah Ben Ezra, a grizzled Jewish militant Zionist heading to the Promised Land. The women give birth - Samir's unconscious wife delivers a stillborn girl, Ben Ezra's wife dies delivering a healthy boy.
Transcending their differences, Ben Ezra gives his son to Samir. Only these two men know the truth of the boy's origin, and Samir vows to raise him as his true son - naming him Badyr. Years later, Badyr - now known as "The Pirate" - has become one of the wealthiest and most powerful Arabic entrepreneurs in the Middle East. Educated in the West, Badyr is more western than Arabic - but remains grounded in his perceived heritage and distrustful of Jews.
The Pirate is seemingly invincible, and with his looks, charm, and unending supply of money, no woman can resist him. But two women have power over his fate: one a long-lost love, another obsessed with the search for her missing father. However, it's not just Badyr's heart at risk. A web of political intrigue, corruption and terrorism threatens the business empire he worked to build, and he is drawn into a shadowy world of decadence, passion, and betrayal. Soon Badyr must decide whom he can trust, risking his life, family and fortune in that decision - and finds allies in the most unlikely of places, shocked by the reality he discovers.
From the author of The New York Times number one best-seller The Carpetbaggers comes a compelling tale of decadence, luxury, greed, and international intrigue set against a backdrop of Middle East oil and global terrorism. The Pirate was later adapted into the star-studded CBS miniseries featuring Anne Archer, Eli Wallach, Christopher Lee, Ian McShane, Armand Assante, and more.

Cant get into the one dimensional characters
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Well I tried for 20, minutes and really do not like this book. The characters do not seem real and has very boring narration with not enough inflection or pause to realize what you have just heard. It feels rushed and the writing is very immature, with not enough description of the people and places. everything is flat. I don't hear any real feeling. I don't get the plot or the people or anything about it so far. Really not for me. Must return it, sorry. The story "idea" sounded good. Maybe in hardcopy form it is?
Has The Pirate turned you off from other books in this genre?
    Yes, kind of.
How could the performance have been better?
Slower with more conversation in "real" sounding language between the characters. The little conversation there is, is very corny.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Pirate?
The scenes are not the problem, besides them moving way too fast, and too many bombarding you all at once. With better writing, pace and narration, they might work?
    Narration
    Narration was very good
But for people witb no knowledge of french it is difficult to follow

Mary Rose MacKinnon is a successful author of YA fiction doing a tour of duty as stay-at-home mom while her partner Hilary takes a turn focusing on her career. She tries valiantly to balance the (mostly) solo parenting of two young children with the relentless needs of her aging parents. But amid the hilarities of full-on domesticity arises a sense of dread. Do others notice the dents in the expensive refrigerator? How long will it take Mary Rose to realize that the car alarm that has been going off all morning is hers, and how on earth did her sharpest pair of scissors wind up in her toddler's hands?
As frustrations mount, she experiences a flare-up of forgotten symptoms of a childhood illness that compel her to rethink her own upbringing and family history. Over the course of one outwardly ordinary week, Mary Rose's world threatens to unravel, and the specter of violence raises its head with dangerous implications for her and her children.
With humor and unerring emotional accuracy, Adult Onset explores the pleasures and pressures of family bonds, powerful and yet so easily twisted and broken. Ann-Marie MacDonald has crafted a searing, terrifying, yet ultimately uplifting story.

    Publisher's Summary:
The award-winning author of How to Be and American Housewife returns with a poignant story of estranged sisters, forced together by family tragedy, who soon learn that sisterhood knows no limits.
Rachel and Drew Snow may be sisters, but their lives have followed completely different paths. Married to a wonderful man and a mother to two strong-minded teens, Rachel hasn't returned to her childhood home since being kicked out by her strict father after an act of careless teenage rebellion. Drew, her younger sister, followed her passion for music but takes side jobs to make ends meet and longs for the stability that has always eluded her. Both sisters recall how close they were, but the distance between them seems more than they can bridge.
When their deferential Japanese mother, Haruki, is diagnosed with dementia and gives Rachel power of attorney, Rachel's domineering father, Killian, becomes enraged. In a rare moment of lucidity, Haruki asks Rachel for a book in her sewing room, and Rachel enlists her sister's help in the search. The book - which tells the tale of real-life female samurai Tomoe Gozen, an epic saga of love, loss, and conflict during 12th-century Japan - reveals truths about Drew and Rachel's relationship that resonate across the centuries, connecting them in ways that turn their differences into assets.

    Very interesting book
I recently discovered this author and have found her books to be very good. I liked this book a lot. The sisters provided a unique situation to me in many ways as did their Japanese culture. I could relate to their situation in regard to their mother's dementia and the problems they all faced. It was not the happiest of books but it was truthful in my opinion and very real. I hope to read more from this author.
excellent expression of the connection of past and present
This book described how the historical past can weave a connecting thread with the present by sharing family history with present personalities. This can lead to understanding emotional conflict by learning how ancestors resolved similar situations and emotions.
Immersing story about two sisters, learning hiw the past effects current day situations.
I love stories like this, that intertwine modern day times with past history. These two sisters learn about their parents background how what happened with their past effects current day situations. Margaret Dilloway is fascinating in introducing different cultures to us by weaving incredible stories. Let yourself be submerged in this story of how 2 sisters learn about their mother's past, while learning to cope with each other and their difficult father.
    Five Stars
Wonderful book with so much information about the Japanese American cultures
    Touching
I liked the way the author told the story of the past and the present. It is a beautiful story of complex relationships between daughters and mothers and fathers and children both in the present in the past. I recommend this book. Enjoy!
