With the outbreak of war, nursing becomes a patriotic duty and Liz gets her chance, together with her new friend Helen Gallagher, whose large, Irish-Catholic family provides a striking contract to the constraint of the MacMillan household.

Maggie Craig is a wonderful writer.

Maggie Craig writes with great flair, colour and verve and she is on top form with her entrancing and enjoyable saga set in Glasgow during the Second World War, When the Lights Come On Again.

Becoming a nurse is one of Liz MacMillanâs most cherished dreams, however, she is well aware that making this dream a reality would be nothing short of a miracle. With her domineering father having made it perfectly clear that he does not want his daughter to follow this path, Liz had resigned herself to acquiescing to her parentâs will and becoming a shorthand typist instead. But when war is declared and Liz finds herself compelled to do her patriotic duty, her dream to become a nurse is finally within her reach.

At Glasgowâs Western Infirmary, Liz might be working her fingers to the bone and end up collapsing in an exhausted heap every night, but she wouldnât have it any other way. Although the hours are long and the work is tough, Liz is reveling in the new friendships she is making and relishing the freedom and independence which her job as a trainee nurse has bestowed upon her. Being part of a close knit group of nurses and medical students also enables her to make plenty of new acquaintances â and to fall head over heels in loveâ

Liz is immediately dazzled by handsome Glaswegian-Italian Mario Rossi. With his dashing good looks and charismatic personality, Liz simply cannot seem to stop herself from falling in love with him. However, when Mario is interned as an enemy alien, Liz finds herself crushed, heartbroken and absolutely devastated. In desperate need of a shoulder to cry, she quickly finds comfort and solace in her friendship with steadfast Adam Buchanan. Together, the two friends share confidences and experience the pain, anguish and sheer terror of a world torn apart by war.

Liz has made a new life for herself after her heartbreak over Mario, but when he returns she begins to wonder whether he truly is the man for herâ.or whether her heart now belongs to somebody else.

Maggie Craig is a terrific storyteller who certainly knows how to keep her readers turning the pages and When the Lights Come On Again is a fantastic tale full of searing emotion, nail-biting drama and poignant romance.

Boring

I just could not bear to read all of this book--I ended up skimming through it hoping it might get better. It was so predictable and trite that I couldn't find any enjoyment here. With any sexual references removed, this book might appeal to a 12 year old.

not a fair review

Please, don't get all worked up over this review. I know it is not fair because I didn't give it a chance but I just could not get invested in these characters. First, this couple has been going together for 6 years. He is in college and I am not sure if she is or not. So, quite young. You can tell by the behavior at the first of the story to see the immaturity in each of them. However, they are engaged, in love, etc. She walks in on him in what she thinks is a cheating offense but never gives him a chance to explain what is going on. Of course, if she had then the story would have been over. But to leave town the same day and never look back is a bit extreme.

In all the reviews it mentions catching him in the compromising position but no one mentions that it was all staged by the town slut and he never knew what hit him. Men can be so dumb at times. Then he gets a call from school that he needs to return immediately because he needs to sign some police reports because some...minors were busted without alcohol. I didn't get that. What did they bust them for? Being ...without alcohol is not an offense.

Now the reason she walked in on her fiancé is because they had a date planned and she was showing up to meet him to begin their evening. She storms home, packs her suitcase and while packing her good friend Jack drops by, she had invited him over to say good-bye before he left town. What? She had a date but she invited Jack over? I'm confused. She clings to Jack, they are in her bedroom, loving him in that moment for his perfect timing. Now, I wonder how that would have looked to her fiancé had he walked in on her? So she leaves town with her best friend Jack. This is where I quit. I just couldn't figure out the whole thing.

I love this book

I love this book. It's about finding love after a huge misunderstanding a decade prior. I loved how interesting and sweet this book was. This poor girl thought she caught her fiance cheating on her, she left town with a different guy and married him and had his child. Soon later her husband dies and she goes home. She meet's her ex-fiance.

A Good fun read

This story was gifted to me for an honest review and it was also my first audio book. With that in mind I thought the story was fun and simple. I found myself laughing and talking to myself during most of it. Since it was an audio book I found myself listening and talking out loud saying things like, "ohhh no he didn't" or "you keep telling yourself that". It was funny and light hearted but maybe that's because I'm use to dark reads but I still enjoyed this book. A nice quick read with little drama, just a woman standing in her own way of love. (many can probably relate ). Thank you for letting me listen to your story I thoroughly enjoyed it.
