Title: Screen

Author: Barry N. Malzberg

Narrator: Stefan Rudnicki

Format: Unabridged

Length: 4 hrs and 48 mins

Language: English

Release date: 02-13-15

Publisher: Skyboat Media, Inc.

Genres: Romance, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

Screen is Barry N. Malzberg's daring and controversial debut novel about a man who can only obtain sexual satisfaction by projecting himself into fantasies evoked by the cinema.

In the tradition of Vladimir Nabokov, Malzberg draws his listeners over the precipice of rationality into a realm where dreams are real - a realm in which the hero, a humble investigator for the New York City Welfare Department, finds himself married to Sophia Loren, seducing Elizabeth Taylor, and seduced by Brigitte Bardot - all in one tortured weekend.

Members Reviews:

Early Malzberg

Barry N. Malzbergâs use of the language of erotic literature to craft nihilistic black comedies matured in his later SF works. Screen, written for the controversial publisher of avant-garde literary fiction and erotica Olympia Press (first print of Nabokovâs Lolita, Burroughsâ Naked Lunch, etc.), demonstrates Malzbergâs non-genre desires. One of numerous novels he wrote for Olympia, some under pseudonyms, Screen was pitched to Malzberg by Maurice Girodas as it was an idea for a âbook he could not get his other writers to tackleâ (see this article for more on the press and Malzbergâs discussion of the book). According to Malzberg, it was written in two weeks (!!) but never generated either lawsuits or the scandal Girodas wantedâ.

The premise: Depressed man, who works for the Department of Welfare, obsesses over movies. He is able to âprojectâ himself into the film and âmake passionate love to Elizabeth Taylor, Doris Day, Brigitte Bardot, Sophiaâ and others (from Malzbergâs article âRepentance, Desire, and Natalie Woodâ). Sounds like a plot straight from the worst erotic fiction?

Malzbergâs creation: The tone establishes itself with the first line of the book: âFriday, it was YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW. It was playing at the Jewel, a battered, faintly odorous theatre somewhere near the slaughterhouses [â]â (1). We are flooded with malaise and despair, the protagonistâs projections into movies slowly take over his life, the act of âenteringâ a film is an ecstatic moment: âNow, in the blackness, all things were truly possibleâ (7). But also ultimately, an empty oneâ

The metafiction commentary on film are the highlights of the novel: for example, while projected into some post-war melodrama with Sophia Loren, our antihero laments, âWhat Sophia does not undestand; that she has never understood, is that this particular kind of plot imposes certain exigencies which, while they make the actors unhappy, cannot be helpedâ (16).

Rather than solely a pornographic adventure with famous actresses, Malzbergâs uncomfortable eroticism transpires in a theater filled with âa feeling of blasted hopeâ where âdim spaces [are] penetrated only by the ticking of the projectorâ (70). Hopelessly addicted to cinematic worlds, our antihero âwanted to be only in a small theatre somewhere, a gnome huddle in darkness spinning my life awayâ (55).

Beautiful moments abound interspersed with cringeworthy sex scenes.

Title: Love Is in the Air

Subtitle: Places to See, Book 3

Author: Sharon Kleve

Narrator: John Martin Byrne

Format: Unabridged

Length: 1 hr and 46 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-28-15

Publisher: Books to Go Now

Genres: Romance, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

Sophie Grant made a promise to her friend. She loves the comfort of her bookstore and has no desire whatsoever to go on an adventure - not when she can read about them every day in a book.

But a promise is a promise.

After sticking a pin in a map she heads off to the Colorado Rockies.

High in the Colorado Rockies, world renowned photographer Jonas Hansen is healing from a personal loss. Will Sophie's kind nature, love of photography, and beautiful smile make Jonas whole again?

Members Reviews:

So lovable!

Sophie Grant goes on adventures all the time since she owns a bookstore. She loves reading and prefers to experience life within the pages of books than in the real world. She heads off the Colorado Rockies due to a promise to a friend but this city girl knows nothing about hiking. Jonas Hansen is a tour guide whoâs also a wildlife photographer whoâs lost his love for photography. Heâs a wounded character and it takes an understanding woman, a big snow storm, a little accident and his adorable dog to bring him back to life.

For Jonas and Sophie, itâs love at first sight. Their romance is believable, despite that it happened so fast, and I enjoyed watching Sophie break out of the protective little cage she created for herself and to finally live her life.

Sharonâs writing style flowed smoothly and kept me entertained. I didnât want the story to end.

I purchased the story during a promotional period on Amazon. My review is honest and not compensated in any way.

4 Stars

Nice

This is a lovely short story that will bring a smile. Sophie has me laughing from the outset â I canât imagine a character less suited to an adventure outing in the Rockies! With Sophie, Sharon Kleve creates and funny and likable character, while with Jonas we have a yummy male lead who will (hopefully!) save Sophie from herself. There is, perhaps, too much unneeded information packed into too small a story (elephants and cranky co-hikers come to mind), but all that can be safely tucked away, as you enjoy the pleasant scenery and refreshing mountain air.

I purchased this book online and have given this review freely and without compensation of any kind.

Another great read from Sharon Kleve

Here we have Sophie who goes to Colorado to honor a friend's request to have an adventure... and boy does she! She arrives early to the hiking and camping place to check things out and meets one of her guides, world renowned wildlife photographer Jonas Hansen and Rex the dog. There is an instant attraction between the two and they decide to spend some time together. During her trip, she reminds him of his love of photography. I enjoyed seeing the two share things and become closer... a little accident, a snowstorm and a wonderful dog make this an entertaining short story. Loved seeing her characters come to life!

cute fast little read

If you're looking for romance and a little adventure this book will get you both. It's a really cute and fast little read. Actually my biggest complaint about it and the reason I am giving it four instead of five stars is becuSe it went by too quickly. I feel like the book could have been expanded and things could have happened slower so I could enjoy it longer! The writing is excellent though. Would definitely try more by this author

Publisher's Summary:

Lucy's perfect world came crashing down around her when she heard those four dreaded words: "I don't love you". Followed by the slamming of the door.

Six months later, still in shock and denial, Lucy boarded a plane to go somewhere far away. She needed to be alone, with no memories of Paul. While in Egypt she met Sebastian Steel, whose origin was as potent as his magnetism; he was half English, half Italian, and a successful hotelier in Sharm el Sheikh and Cairo. Sebastian also had another secret--the one he could not tell Lucy. Their relationship started and developed, and they began to realize they had a lot in common and discovered that their lives were inextricably linked. The two of them were soon embarking on an exciting journey brought about by the enigmatic, unseen, but ever present Primrose, who had brought these two together. Finally, after seven years in Egypt, Sebastian returned home to England, back to the cottage he had shared with his mother, but he was returning with Lucy--the woman with whom he had fallen in love.

Sweet Romance

--I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book I have listened to by Elizabeth Chapelle. This was a sweet romance. The thing that really caught my attention was the beautiful descriptions of Egypt. The story of Lucy and Sebastian was slowly evolving, and you can't help but love both characters. You could feel Lucy's pain in the beginning of the story, and how she grew stronger as time went on. Sebastian, extremely patient and tender, was the perfect gentleman. The way their history intertwines makes the story even more fun. I do wish it was longer giving some additional history as they travel back to England, and would loved to have seen more scenes with Lucy and her ex-husband. A little more drama would have been fun.

The narration of this book by Melanie Fraser was wonderful. She brought the whole story to life, always keeping me listening. She gives each character their own life, with feelings and emotions that draw you in. I love her narrations, always able to tell who is speaking and makes you feel as if you know the characters.

This was a short enjoyable listen.

Hopeful

Would you listen to The Promise again? Why?

No. I don't usually read romance novels.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Promise?

The narration was excellent.

Which character as performed by Melanie Fraser was your favourite?

Lucy. Melanie emphasised her pain very well.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

There's always hope.

Any additional comments?

The story was fairly well written although somewhat repetitive.

A beautiful love story

Half your work in choosing a great story to read or listen to is to pick something narrated by Melanie Fraser. Seriously, I've listened to a whole lot of different genres by her and each one has a fantastic story to tell and she narrates it professionally and makes it pure entertainment.

This one is the story about two people who are really saddened by something that has happened in their lives and they are both struggling to come to grips with this and carry on with their lives.

Short and sweet

Very short listen, so not much character development here. Wouldn't want to add to the publishers summary as it the story is so short!

I didn't think it overly Christmassy, but it's a warm hearted story with great attention to historical detail which makes it a worthy listen. It won't take you long!
