In His life, Caitanya Mahāprabhu set an example. Although He was Viṣṇu, He came in disguise. He's known as the channa-avatāra. So I already said what avatāra means, and channa means covered. So there's a way in which He was acting a part. What kind of part was He acting? The part of His own devotee. That is, He came—He's God—but He acted as a devotee of Himself to show by example. Now, you may teach a child how to write letters, the letter-writing ceremony, and the child's first letters. And you take the hand and say, "Okay, you make an A like this, and then B and so forth." And one shouldn't think that, "Oh, the parent is learning," or "the person the teacher is learning how to write, because look how deliberately they're writing. And they must be learning the alphabet." No, they're teaching it to someone else by example, by taking their hand and then showing how to do it. So that's the same way that God comes, in a way, a didactic way, to show, "Here's how to follow the tenets of Bhagavad-gītā.
