Your Corner of the World

Dave Jump, President of American Milling, is an entrepreneur with a reputation for nurturing successful businesses. Though Dave primarily works, very successfully, to transfer grain up and down the Mississippi River, his eye for business and heart for his workers has made him successful at most things he’s set his hand to—from his revitalization of St. Louis’s beloved City Museum to the emergency production of much needed ventilators during the Covid-19 pandemic. Through his creativity, hard work and dignifying care for and compensation of his employees, Dave is an excellent model for what it looks like to use your God given talents, treasure, and position for the glory of God and good of neighbor.

On this episode our guest is Ray Cortese, the self-professed “unspiritual” pastor who has spent over 40 years at the same small town church in Florida. Ray shares his own story of his life and call to ministry, and through it offers a candid testimony to all of us about the power of the God to transform human ambition for his own purposes. Whether you are a minister, church worker, or have ever struggled to know the right role of godly ambition in your own work, this is a great episode for you! Connect with us! Our guest on this episode is Tom Nelson. The subject of faith and work is very near and dear to Tom's heart. He is president of the faith and work organization Made to Flourish, a pastor, and the author of several books including: “Work Matters”, “The Economics of Neighborly Love”, and, most recently, “The Flourishing Pastor”. In this episode Tom and Dan discuss the world of faith and work, and Tom's profound, lifelong commitment to bridging, what he calls, the Sunday to Monday gap. Tom’s most recent book, the flourishing pastor, offers a framework for ministry leaders to get out from the crushing burden of stress and crisis. Whether you are are a pastor yourself or simply a faithful believer ministering to a weary world through your daily work--issues of over commitment and burn out, along with the need for accountability and discipleship are nearly ubiquitous. Who are you leading? Who is leading you? As you listen, I invite you consider what flourishing leadership might look like in your life.

In this episode, Dan sits down with Abby Karsten and Chris Gordon. Abby is the Women's Ministry Leader of the Kirk of the Hills Church in St. Louis, and Christine (Chris) is an author of Bible studies for women and co-founder of At His Feet. They talk a bit about their work in their churches and on writing bible study curriculum, but spend most of the conversation on a subject, quite literally, close to all our hearts: the body. Our bodies are not incidental, "we are integrated, spiritual and physical beings" Chris insists. Our bodies are how we experience the goodness of God's creation: watching the dawn break, hearing Beethoven's 5th, eating Indian food, holding a baby. And yet they can also be the location, and often the source of profound pain, shame, and longing. None of this is foreign to our incarnate savior, the trio reminds us. Jesus took on a body, was DEPENDENT on the body of his mother, worked with his body, and yes, probably sometimes got splinters.

Abram Van Engen is a professor of English at Washington University in STL, Executive Director of the Carver Project, and the author of 2 books. The second and most well-known is titled "City on a Hill, a history of American exceptionalism". By way of disclaimer, Abram and Dan both wrote theses on the Puritans, and nerd out about that on this episode from time to time. They also talk in depth about Abram's book "City on a Hill" and this idea of American exceptionalism, which may not immediately feel like it has bearing on your own vocation or work. But as you listen, we invite you to take note of the idea of an "origin story." Consider how you think about your own history. What "origin story" do you tell about your own career, and how does that shape the way you see yourself and your work?

In this, our last episode of season 3, Dan sits down with pastor and author Scott Sauls to talk about the role of leaders in these unprecedented times. Sauls encourages us to fix our eyes, not on our enemies or the controversy of our day, but on Jesus. Reflecting on excerpts from Scott's book A Gentle Answer, he and Dan discuss media, outrage, politics, criticism, and the importance of vulnerable leadership.

This week Dan sits down with CEO and artificial intelligence expert David Karandish. Karandish answers all our pressing questions about A.I. like: when do we need to start fearing the rise of the machines? Is A.I. just human beings playing god? How will A.I. affect job displacement? And how can we best please our robot overlords? (Just kidding, we're all going to be fine.) David offers a window into the fascinating beauty of technology and how it fits within the creation mandate to be fruitful, multiply, and fill, gently subdue, and cultivate the earth.
