Buffy Lloyd-Krejci is a Board Certified Infection Preventionist who is responsible for identifying, investigating, monitoring, and reporting healthcare-associated infections.

As owner of IPCWell Buffy realized while working on a national infection control pilot study with nursing homes that infection control practices were not hard-wired.

Normally, the staff member in charge of infection control was often handed this additional duty/position along with their regular duties such as the Director of Nursing. In fact, most facilities that Buffy works with state that the IP (Infection Preventionist) has about 10 hours on average to work on infection control.

COVID-19 is shining the spotlight on our entire healthcare system and its lack of preparedness. Nursing homes are even more challenges as even the most basics of infection control are not incorporated into day to day practices.

There is currently a spotlight on long-term care facilities, aka skilled nursing facilities, aka nursing homes concerning their infection control practices given the current COVID-19 pandemic.

However, this is not a new battle for this healthcare setting. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are 1-3 million serious infections occurring within this healthcare system every year that result in 380,000 deaths…or 1,041 deaths DAILY.

Buffy made the following Key Points:

1) Nursing homes are severely lagging in infection control practices compared to the acute care setting.

2) The employee assigned to infection control has very little support and training.

3) Infection control is a massive topic and career path and 5-10 hours dedicated per week is not enough.

4) Nursing homes need support such as federal funding for education and to advance their practices such as surveillance reporting into the CDC (such as what hospitals had).

5) Our vulnerable population DESERVE this level of care and our healthcare workers DESERVE appropriate training.

John Carlson joined Bill Heinrich and Jim Grant today and his topic was "Get Full VALUE From YOUR Training".

John shared how often many times we don't get much value from the training we take.

He explained The Forgetting Curve developed by Ebbinghaus shows that from the time you complete your training to the time you go to work, you've already lost 50 - 66% of the information you learned.

If you do not set an intention prior to taking your training, you will have lost even more.

And unless you immediately begin to apply the information you've retained, you will also pretty much loose those results quickly too.

So how can we get better results from the training we invest in? Setting intentions beforehand and having an execution plan will greatly improve your results.

John shared the importance of staying in touch with clients and keeping employees motivated and productive.
