"What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language."- Muccia Prada
Clothes have such a powerful way of impacting on our lives, who we are, how we represent ourselves and how other people see us. Clothes also bring together communities, cultures and tell stories about our heritage, our past and also our future. By talking to designers, stylists and other members of the fashion community, from all over the world, I have realised that they all have one thing in common, one aim - they want to tell stories with their clothes and their brands. Either their own personal stories or the story of their country and heritage. They tell their stories through their clothes, so that you can create your own story as you wear them. The narrative keeps on going round and round, all of us either knowingly or not telling our unique tale by what we wear and how we show up in our lives.
Today I am talking with Chiranjeev Kaur, an emerging designer from India who has worked in the fashion industry for most of her career, as a stylist and brand consultant, but who during the recent lockdowns, decided to follow her dreams and put her experience and creativeness into designing couture wear in the Indian tradition. Chiranjeeve uses the traditional craftsmanship of the people in her town to create wonderful designs and they, in turn, offer her advice from their wealth of experience handed down through the generations. Because she was a stylist, she uses this to advise her clients on shapes, colours and textures that will best suit their individual bodies, giving a unique perspective on her design.
Due to the lockdowns and Covid situation in India at the moment, Chiranjeev is unable to put together a capsule collection like she wants to, but is working on individual designs and commissions from her own home. Her vision for the future is to have her designs represented in outlets in the UK and America and to build on the couture side, designing bespoke outfits that minimise the waste of “off the peg” designs and staying true to her roots.
