You're Qualified (Part 1)

God uses broken people. That's all He has. God doesn't call the equipped; He equips the called. Jesus desires for you to partner with Him to live your life on mission. Too often we think God is looking for the powerful, the affluent, the charismatic—people with dynamic personalities. We think God is looking for ability and what He's really looking for is availability. He will equip available men who are willing to take a step and follow Him.

What was your first job or the first team you were a part of? Did you feel qualified? Why or why not?

What do you think makes someone qualified for a position or role? Why did you choose your response?

Read Nehemiah 1:11-2:5. Nehemiah was a cupbearer in modern-day Iran who felt a burden or call to construction in Jerusalem. If we read the stories of other people who were called by God in the Old Testament (Noah, Moses, Rahab, David, Esther, etc.), there are two noteworthy observations: It was more about their character than their competency or credentials, and it was more about their availability than their ability. How does this trend compare to worldly standards? How would our respective teams (at work or at school) and society at large look different if those in leadership took a similar approach?

Read Acts 4:13 and 1 Corinthians 1:26-29. Although Peter and John were considered "ordinary men," God's power was working in them and through them in an extraordinary way. If we survey the stories of the disciples and other people who were called in the New Testament (John the Baptist, Saul/Paul, Timothy, etc.), we continue to see the same trend noted from the Old Testament. Again, God doesn't call the equipped; He equips the called. Why do you think God chooses to operate this way? How should this change the way we approach life?

Read John 15:16, Romans 8:28-30, Ephesians 2:8-10, and 1 Peter 2:9. What are some of the lies you've bought into about not being qualified to be used to advance God's Kingdom (e.g. imperfections, insecurities, etc.)? How do passages like these help us combat the lies of the Enemy? Why is it important for us to understand we've been called and qualified by God to be set apart from the rest of the world?
