Under Oregon’s mandatory minimum sentencing law, Measure 11, juveniles 15-through-17 years old charged with certain crimes can be prosecuted in adult courts, and diverted into adult prisons if they’re still incarcerated when they turn 25. The Oregon Council on Civil Rights is presenting a recent report calling for reforms to youth sentencing under Measure 11 to the state legislature this week. We’ll discuss juvenile sentencing practices with Bobbin Singh, a member of the Oregon Council on Civil Rights; John Foote, the Clackamas County District Attorney; and Robert White, a professional mentor who was charged with a Measure 11 crime at age 17.
